Scent Of The South: Fragrance And Identity In The 19th Century, Sarah Donahua Peters Aug 2025

Scent Of The South: Fragrance And Identity In The 19th Century, Sarah Donahua Peters

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the role of personal fragrance as a cultural marker in the 19th-century American South, examining how scent reflected identity, status, and social norms in a region shaped by colonialism, capitalism, and religious influence. Drawing on historical sources, botanical knowledge, and public history practices, the project traces the evolution of fragrance from home-crafted perfumes to mass-marketed products, highlighting how access to scent was shaped by race, class, and gender. Central to the thesis is a public history exhibition designed for the Esse Purse Museum in Little Rock, Arkansas, which invites visitors to engage with scent as a medium …

Phosphorylation Deficient Inducible Camp Early Repressor (Icer) Modulates Tumorigenesis And Survival In A Transgenic Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Model Of Melanoma, Justin Wheelan, Melissa Rose Spigelman, Angelo Cirinelli, James Reilly, Carlos A. Molina Aug 2025

Phosphorylation Deficient Inducible Camp Early Repressor (Icer) Modulates Tumorigenesis And Survival In A Transgenic Zebrafish (Danio Rerio) Model Of Melanoma, Justin Wheelan, Melissa Rose Spigelman, Angelo Cirinelli, James Reilly, Carlos A. Molina

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer, is commonly associated with mutations in the BRAF gene, particularly BRAFV600E, which drives tumor proliferation via the ERK1/2 signaling cascade. While BRAF inhibitors initially demonstrate efficacy, therapeutic resistance remains a significant challenge. Emerging evidence implicates the cAMP signaling pathway, particularly the cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) and its repressor, inducible cAMP early repressor (ICER), in melanoma progression and drug resistance. ICER, a transcriptional repressor regulated via Ras/MAPK-mediated phosphorylation and ubiquitination, is degraded in melanoma, undermining its tumor-suppressive role. In a brafV600E; p53 (loss of function) transgenic zebrafish ( …

Establishing Policies And Standards To Implement Socially Sustainable Practices, Josephine Joe Wiles-Warner Aug 2025

Establishing Policies And Standards To Implement Socially Sustainable Practices, Josephine Joe Wiles-Warner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Liberia and sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries lag behind the rest of the world due to substandard social and physical infrastructure development. Poverty is persistently increasing, and fewer than half of the countries in SSA did not meet the development goal for reducing extreme poverty. SSA countries could progress much faster by developing their core infrastructure and reforming their institutions. The purpose of the qualitative, policy Delphi study was to determine how a panel of 16 purposively selected global experts on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) in multinational organizations in the United States and Africa view the desirability, feasibility, …

The Public Rule Of Law, Jonathan S. Gould Aug 2025

The Public Rule Of Law, Jonathan S. Gould

Law and Contemporary Problems

Across the globe, residents of many democracies worry that their public officials threaten the rule of law. But what, precisely, does that mean? Much of the literature on what the rule of law requires focuses on what it demands when government interacts with private parties. This article examines what I call the public rule of law, asking what the rule of law has to say about how public power is organized and exercised.

In doing so, I consider four approaches to the rule of law in a public law context. First, a rule of law problem could arise from an …

Disentangling The Effect Of Criminal Legal System Involvement On Mental Health In The United States, Pui Ying Chan Aug 2025

Disentangling The Effect Of Criminal Legal System Involvement On Mental Health In The United States, Pui Ying Chan

Dissertations and Theses

BACKGROUND: Interactions with the criminal legal system (CLS), such as through arrest or incarceration, are relatively common in the United States (US) and are increasingly recognized as social risk factors for poor mental health. Previous studies have reported a positive association between CLS involvement and poor mental health, with some theoretical frameworks, including the ecosocial theory and the stress process paradigm, supporting a plausible causal relationship. However, prior research has significant limitations in providing casual evidence given possible reverse causation in cross-sectional studies and insufficient consideration for the dynamics between CLS exposures, mental health status, and related confounders over time …

Don’T Hold Your Horses: Solutions To The Bureau Of Land Management’S Failure To Manage Wild Horse Populations, Sutaria, Kiran Mahendra Aug 2025

Don’T Hold Your Horses: Solutions To The Bureau Of Land Management’S Failure To Manage Wild Horse Populations, Sutaria, Kiran Mahendra

Santa Clara Law Review

Since the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act (WFHA) was enacted in 1971 – mandating protection and management of the wild horse and burro population – the BLM has triggered a public outcry over its mismanagement of wild horses. From inhumane roundup processes to a well-intentioned but poorly executed adoption program that inadvertently subjects horses to cruel conditions and slaughter, the BLM’s efforts have continuously undermined wild horse preservation. When an overwhelming majority of Americans push for wild horse protections, and wild horse preservation is a topic that largely receives bipartisan support, it is hard to understand the current status …

Post-Fire Succession In An Old-Growth Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) Forest In The Santa Cruz Mountain Bioregion, Mojgan Mahdizadeh Aug 2025

Post-Fire Succession In An Old-Growth Coast Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) Forest In The Santa Cruz Mountain Bioregion, Mojgan Mahdizadeh

Master's Theses

Fire is a common disturbance in the western United States, and variation in its frequency and intensity can significantly impact species recovery and distribution across ecosystems. While fire frequency and intensity are increasing in coast redwood forests, little is known about how this forest type responds to high-intensity wildfires. In 2020, a high-intensity wildfire burned large portions of the coast redwood forest in the Santa Cruz Mountains, including over 1,700 ha of old-growth. This event created a unique opportunity to evaluate post-fire succession. This research assessed vegetation recovery across high and low to moderate severity burned areas using random sampling …

Beyond Smoking: A Geospatial Investigation Of Factors Associated With Lung And Bronchus Cancer Risk In Pennsylvania, Tesla D. Dubois, Daniel Wiese, Kevin A. Henry, Shannon M. Lynch

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: While smoking is the leading cause of lung and bronchus cancer (LBC), additional exposures have been implicated and may explain the rise in LBC among never-smokers. To better understand the spatial distribution of LBC incidence and associated risk factors, this study aims to identify geographic areas with significantly elevated incidence rates in Pennsylvania and investigate the potential underlying risk factors.

METHODS: Using cancer registry data aggregated to the census tract level, spatial scan statistics were applied to detect areas of higher-than-expected LBC incidence across the state. Associations were then tested between census tract inclusion in a high-incidence area and …

Steatotic liver disease (SLD), which is associated with increased risk of cancer-related mortality, needs timely and cost-effective detection. Although liver biopsy remains the diagnostic gold standard, its invasiveness and high-cost limit widespread use. Ultrasound is a practical and affordable alternative. We evaluated inter- and intra-observer agreement for ultrasound-based diagnosis of SLD using images from the Chile Biliary Longitudinal Study (Chile BiLS), a cohort of women with gallstones. These women have a high burden of obesity and related metabolic disorders, putting them at higher risk for SLD. A radiologist (observer 1) reviewed a randomly selected subset of 425 baseline images and …

Insufficient eradication of cancer cells and survival of drug tolerant clones are major relapse driving forces. Underlying molecular mechanisms comprise activated prosurvival and antiapoptotic signaling, leading to insufficient apoptosis and drug resistance. The identification of programmed cell death pathways alternative to apoptosis opens up possibilities to antagonize apoptosis escape routes. We have earlier shown that acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) harbors a distinct propensity to undergo cell death by receptor-interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1)-dependent necroptosis, activated by small-molecule second mitochondria-derived activators of caspase (SMAC) mimetics. Despite demonstrated safety and tolerability of SMAC mimetics in clinical trials, their efficacy as single agent …

People’S Plate: The Recipe For Equitable Food Distribution, Bayleigh Nicole Thurston Aug 2025

People’S Plate: The Recipe For Equitable Food Distribution, Bayleigh Nicole Thurston

Theses

Food insecurity remains a pressing issue in the United States that disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, leaving millions without access to nutritious meals. In 2023 alone, over 50 million people turned to food assistance programs for additional support1. While traditional nutrition programs like food banks and soup kitchens provide a vital service to many communities, they often lack the capacity to address the multifaceted nature of hunger. The social stigma and alienation associated with seeking food assistance become of little concern when organizations are grappling with daunting challenges of limited resources, logistical hurdles, and the need to provide quality, nutritious meals. …

Real Earnings Management Among Industries: Does Market Competition Matter?, Michał Comporek Aug 2025

Real Earnings Management Among Industries: Does Market Competition Matter?, Michał Comporek

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

This paper investigates real earnings management (REM) practices in public non-financial companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) from 2014 to 2023, focusing on sectoral differences and the influence of market competition. REM, defined as deviations from normal business operations aimed at manipulating reported earnings, can distort financial information and harm long-term firm value. This study contributes to the existing literature in two key ways. First, it examines variations in abnormal levels of production costs, sales, and discretionary expenditures – REM proxies based on Roychowdhury’s methodology – across sectors classified according to the WSE’s industry framework. This sectoral classification, …
