The gut microbiome has emerged as a key regulator of response to cancer immunotherapy. However, a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms by which the microbiome influences immunotherapy is needed to identify strategies to optimize outcomes. To this end, we developed a mathematical model to obtain insights into the effect of the microbiome on the immune system and immunotherapy response. This model was based on (i) gut microbiome data derived from preclinical studies, (ii) mathematical modeling of the antitumor immune response, (iii) association analysis of microbiome profiles with model-predicted immune profiles, and (iv) statistical models that correlate model parameters with …

Diseases caused by vector-borne plant pathogens cause adverse impacts on yield resilience, food security, and farmer livelihoods, which are bound to aggravate under global change. Biological control is routinely discounted as a mitigation strategy for plant diseases, partially due to scarce and inconclusive empirical support. Here, using curated field survey data for 58 persistently or semi-persistently transmitted pathogens, we employ a multi-method approach to assess the role of resident (i.e., naturally occurring) biological control agents in these pathosystems. Our meta-analyses show how in planta pathogen incidence is strongly affected by vector abundance and infectivity. Meanwhile, biological control agent density negatively …

Phosphorylation of the JNK (pJNK) protein promotes an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), enhancing aggressiveness in inflammatory triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). This study evaluated the role of JNK signaling using a gene signature. RNA sequencing was performed on 347 TNBC tumors from the phase 3 International Breast Cancer Study Group (IBCSG) 22-00 trial, which evaluated adjuvant low-dose cyclophosphamide and methotrexate (CM). Immune-related tumors were identified by TNBC subtype or tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). Associations between JNK and outcomes were analyzed using Cox models. Low pJNK levels were associated with better disease-free survival (DFS) in immune-related tumors. These tumors also had lower Treg …

The Impact Of Alternatives To Incarceration And The Motherhood Identity On Mothers And Their Children: A Qualitative Study, Chloe Blau
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The U.S. prison system population increasingly includes women, a significant proportion of whom are mothers, often incarcerated for non-violent crimes. Some research suggests that alternative to incarceration (ATI) programs can help these women to continue supporting their children while serving their sentences and receiving services that may decrease recidivism. However, few studies have explored the lived experiences of women in these programs. This dissertation investigates the impact of participating in ATI programs on mothers and their relationship to their motherhood identity, their ability to mother, and their relationship with their children. Using a qualitative approach to better understand how women …
A Thematic Analysis Of The Perceived Impact Of Nil Policy On Athletic Identity, Career Maturity, And Black Male Student-Athletes’ Experience Of Transitioning Away From Football, Jesse Merise
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
In 2007 the NCAA launched the widely recognized slogan, “There are over 380,000 student-athletes, and most of us will go pro in something other than sports.” Today, that figure has risen to over 540,000 and continues grow. Among them, Black male student-athletes (BMSAs) comprise 40% of collegiate football participation across all three divisions, a notable increase from 36% in 2012. Since only a small percentage of college football players go on to play professionally, it means that a large number of Black student-athletes will eventually have to leave sports and pursue other career paths.
This study examined the perceived impact …

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social communication, social interactions and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interest or activities. These deficits hinder autistic children’s social and communicative skills. Peer-mediated interventions (PMIs) have been found effective in the development of communication, play and social skills in individuals with ASD. In PMIs typically developing children are trained to be peer models of socially acceptable behavior for children with ASD. This however may contrast with literature indicating that the most effective peer models are individuals who share similarities with the learner. The current study was …
Does The Literature Empirically Support The Use Of Behavior Analysis In The Treatment Of Sports Related Concussions: A Systemic Review, Kayla Mckoy
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Although the literature supports the use of applied behavior analytic (ABA) interventions in the treatment of traumatic and acquired brain injuries, the question remains as to whether or not ABA procedures are an effective treatment option specifically for TBI associated with sports related concussion (SRC). The purpose of the present study was to review the literature available on the use of ABA with individuals diagnosed with sport related TBI to determine if there is enough research to empirically support the use of behavior analysis in the treatment of sport related concussions. The PRISMA method for systematic reviews was used to …

Background/aim: The literature shows a link between hyperoxemia and poor outcomes, whereas this association remains unclear in hospital wards. This study aims to determine the incidence of hyperoxemia in hospital wards and its risk factors.
Materials and methods: Patients aged ≥ 18 years who underwent an evaluation by an intensivist between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2020, while receiving treatment in hospital wards, were included in the study following ethics committee approval. Patients with hypoxemia (partial pressure of oxygen [PaO2] < 60 mmHg), a condition related to Coronavirus disease 2019, a hospital stay < 1 day, or missing data were excluded. Patients were divided into two groups: normoxemia (60 mmHg ≤ PaO2 < 120 mmHg) and hyperoxemia.
Results: The incidence of hyperoxemia was 42.2%. Patients with hyperoxemia had longer hospital stays and higher intensive care unit …
Evaluating Current Practices In Operative Nontechnical Skills Training And Feedback In General Surgery Residency: A Mixed Methods Approach, Madeline Cloonan
Evaluating Current Practices In Operative Nontechnical Skills Training And Feedback In General Surgery Residency: A Mixed Methods Approach, Madeline Cloonan
Theses & Dissertations
Background: Non-technical skills (NTS) are the interpersonal and cognitive abilities that are critical to accomplishing high-risk tasks. Deficiencies in NTS, including communication, teamwork, leadership, and decision-making, are linked to errors in the operating room. Structured training and feedback in NTS remain inconsistent and have not been integrated into daily training. This dissertation addresses this gap by evaluating current NTS training and feedback practices and developing a rubric to enhance the effectiveness of NTS feedback.
Methods: We conducted five complementary studies to assess current NTS training and feedback. The first was a systematic review aimed at identifying intraoperative NTS training interventions …
Colostrum Extracellular Vesicle Are Neuroprotective In The Mptp Intoxicated Mouse Model Of Parkinson's Disease, Samia Akter
Colostrum Extracellular Vesicle Are Neuroprotective In The Mptp Intoxicated Mouse Model Of Parkinson's Disease, Samia Akter
Theses & Dissertations
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. Dopaminergic neuronal loss in the substantia nigra and the formation of Lewy bodies are the disease pathological hallmarks. We demonstrate that bovine colostrum extracellular vesicles (EVs) induce anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective activities during MPTP (methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) intoxication. Treatment these mice with colostrum EVs reduced the extent of activated microglia and neurodegenerative activities. RNA sequencing and transcriptomic analysis revealed a significant decrease in pro- inflammatory responses, as well as reduced recruitment and activation of immunocytes in affected brain tissues. Decreased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, as well as suppressed canonical inflammasomes, was …
Study Of Peptide Amphiphiles As Antimicrobial Agents, Aramis J. Pereira
Study Of Peptide Amphiphiles As Antimicrobial Agents, Aramis J. Pereira
Theses & Dissertations
The global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) crisis presents a severe public health threat, with drug-resistant infections now the third leading cause of mortality worldwide. This escalating problem, driven by the rapid proliferation of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) like the "ESKAPE" pathogens, severely limits treatment options and imposes substantial economic burdens. The crisis is further exacerbated by a limited pipeline of new antimicrobial agents, as most recently approved drugs are modifications of existing classes rather than novel compounds. Peptide amphiphiles (PAs) offer a promising alternative due to their membrane-targeting mechanism, which reduces the likelihood of resistance development. These molecules are amphiphilic and positively …

Prostate cancer is a frequent masculine disease, especially when becoming older. Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is an enzyme present in the human body that plays an important function in preventing oxidative stress and inflammation. It is mostly linked to high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) is an enzyme regulating blood sugar levels. It is found on many cells surfaces: immune cells, epithelial cells, and pancreatic cells. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the biochemical role of PON-1 effect and DPP-4 enzymes with the anti-cancer ability of vitamin D. Research samples were collected from Iraqi prostate cancer patients (male aged …

Esophageal adenocarcinoma is increasingly prevalent and is thought to arise from Barrett's esophagus (BE), a metaplastic condition in which chronic acid and bile reflux transforms the esophageal squamous epithelium into a gastric-intestinal glandular mucosa. The molecular determinants driving this metaplasia are poorly understood. We developed a human BE organoid biobank that recapitulates BE's molecular heterogeneity. Bulk and single-cell transcriptomics, supported by patient tissue analysis, revealed that BE differentiation reflects a balance between SOX2 (foregut/esophageal) and CDX2 (hindgut/intestinal) transcription factors. Using squamous-specific inducible Sox2-KO (Krt5CreER/+ Sox2Δ/Δ ROSA26tdTomato/+) mice, we observed increased basal proliferation, reduced squamous differentiation, and expanded metaplastic glands at …
