Protein function prediction is crucial for understanding the underlying mechanisms of rare diseases. With the increasing availability of computational methods including machine learning-based approaches, network-based methods, and sequence-based methods, predicting protein functions has become more accessible. However, it is not clear which of these methods performs better or how they compare to each other in terms of accuracy, efficiency, and scalability. In this study, we evaluate several computational methods for predicting protein functions in rare diseases using key performance indicators (KPIs). We analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each method and provide recommendations for researchers and clinicians interested in using …

Emotional Armor: An Exploration Of Emotion Regulation On Race-Related Stress And Well-Being, Jibri Khalia Parker
Doctoral Dissertations
Scholars have examined at length the impact of stress on well-being. However, people of color experience an additional stressor called racism. Increased experiences with chronic discrimination and racism have been associated with increased hypertension, heart disease, anxiety and depression to name a few (Williams, 2018). Chronic experiences with racism leads to a phenomenon called race-related stress (Utsey & Ponterotto, 1996). The research has shown the impact of race-related stress on physical and mental health outcomes, particularly on individuals from an ethnic background (Williams, 2018). However, not much research has focused on potential moderators in this relationship. This study poses emotion …

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease that affects 14.7% of adults in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Prevalence of diabetes increases with age, with rates for adults aged 65 and older reaching 29.2% (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Factors such as age, race, obesity, physical activity level, and genetics strongly increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2DM) (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, 2016). Diabetes requires complex and comprehensive management to reduce the risk of developing comorbidities (Al-Shabeeb et al., 2021). Factors such as education, familial support, …
Privacy-Preserving Structure Learning For Geospatial Data Using Information-Theoretic Dependency Measures, Ahmed Mudhish
Privacy-Preserving Structure Learning For Geospatial Data Using Information-Theoretic Dependency Measures, Ahmed Mudhish
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation proposes a privacy-preserving framework for structure learning in Bayesian networks (BNs) that addresses the challenges of distributed geospatial data face. Geospatial datasets often exhibit region-specific patterns such as sparsity and nonlinear dependencies. These patterns undermine the effectiveness of traditional machine learning models. Additionally, learned BN structures may reveal sensitive relationships in the generated graph by BNs. These relationships pose a significant privacy risk if reverse-engineered. To address these issues, three novel algorithms are introduced. First, the Selective Naïve Bayes with HSIC (SNB-HSIC) algorithm applies a kernel-based dependency measure to filter redundant and irrelevant features in sparse datasets, improving …

Assessing The Role Of Employees' Esg Perception On Turnover Intention: A Moderation Analysis, Michelle Leong
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the relationship between employees’ perceptions of their organization’s ESG performance and turnover intentions by drawing upon Social Identity Theory (SIT). SIT suggests that individuals internalize organizational values and beliefs through organizational socialization, which strengthens their identification with the organizations, leading to support for organizations that embody those values. This study also investigated whether ESG awareness is a better predictor than ESG perception. The research employed a cross-sectional survey design to examine whether age and political affiliation moderate the relationship between ESG perception and turnover intention. The findings suggest that employees’ perceptions of their organization’s ESG performance are …

Socio-Cultural Correlates Of Breastfeeding Behavior Among Latina Mothers And Its Implications For Child Health, Liliana Davalos, Brisa Rodriguez Alcantar, Marissa Martinez, Christopher Johansen
Social and Behavioral Health Faculty Research
Background: Latina mothers in the United States report lower rates of breastfeeding initiation and exclusivity than their non-Hispanic counterparts. Lower rates of breastfeeding in infancy may lead to a higher rate of excess weight in childhood and adverse health conditions. We examine the intergenerational effect of education policy on crime. Using administrative data that links outcomes across generations with crime records, we show that the Swedish comprehensive school reform, gradually implemented between 1949 and 1962, reduced conviction rates for both the generation directly affected by the reform and their sons. The reduction in conviction rates occurred in several types of crime.
