Prohibiting domestic violence protective order (DVPO) respondents from firearms is an effective strategy to prevent intimate partner homicide. However, DVPO gun laws vary considerably across states, and the implementation of such laws is inconsistent across localities. Local context, such as resource availability, priorities, and politics, differs across types of communities and impacts the implementation of laws. We conducted in-depth key informant interviews with victim service and criminal justice professionals (N = 27) working in urban communities, rural communities, and statewide organizations to better understand: (a) what communities need to effectively prohibit DVPO respondents from firearms (i.e., the DVPO gun …

Community-engaged research and learning (CERL) is a constructivist pedagogy that involves students working on projects in collaboration with community partners. This approach was introduced to universities in the late 1960s, and although some disciplines have wholeheartedly embraced it, it is still rarely used in mathematics. This paper consists of a series of reflections written by educators, students, community partners and university leaders about a module in a mathematics degree that includes an element of CERL. These reflections demonstrate that community partners find value in the work done by mathematics students and that university leaders are broadly supportive of efforts to …

The integration of internet connectivity into medical devices, known as the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), is revolutionizing modern healthcare through remote monitoring and advanced diagnostics. Among these devices, the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine plays a critical role in managing patients with Sleep Apnea. However, the security of CPAP devices presents significant concerns due to potential vulnerabilities that could lead to critical failures, such as device shutdowns. An analysis was made of the device's connectivity interface, to identify potential exploit points and vulnerabilities. Additionally, we evaluated whether existing threat modeling frameworks - namely the MITRE Adversarial Tactics, Techniques, …

Phospholipase C isozymes (PLCs) hydrolyze phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) into inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DAG), important signaling molecules involved in many cellular processes including Ca2+ release from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). PLCG1 encodes the PLCγ1 isozyme that is broadly expressed. Hyperactive somatic mutations of PLCG1 are observed in multiple cancers, but only one germline variant has been reported. Here, we describe seven individuals with heterozygous missense variants in PLCG1 [p.(Asp1019Gly), p.(His380Arg), p.(Asp1165Gly), and p.(Leu597Phe)] who present with hearing impairment (5/7), ocular pathology (4/7), cardiac septal defects (3/6), and various immunological issues (5/7). Introduction: Research indicates a strong correlation between obesity and the risk of dementia, both are linked to steroid receptor coactivator-1 (SRC-1), a transcriptional coactivator.
Methods: We used RNA sequencing analysis (RNA-Seq) to investigate the transcriptome of SRC-1-KO mice, and identified S100 calcium-binding protein A6 (S100A6), an AD associated gene, as one target of SRC-1. We tested cognitive behaviors in SRC-1-KO mice and mice with a humanized SRC-1 mutation (SRC-1L1376P), and performed promoter luciferase assays on S100A6.
Results: Loss of SRC-1 caused alterations in gene signatures that are commonly associated with neurodegenerative diseases, including AD, and diminished the neural plasticity of …

Neurofibromin/NF1 is a RAS (rat sarcoma virus) GTPase activating protein and estrogen receptor (ER) transcriptional corepressor. NF1low status, identified by copy number loss or low mRNA/protein expression is associated with endocrine therapy resistance in approximately 20% of ER+/HER2− (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2) early-stage breast cancers. The identification of targeted treatments for NF1low ER+/HER2− breast cancer is therefore a priority. In this study proteogenomic analysis of ER+/HER2− breast cancer demonstrated that NF1low tumors exhibited elevated cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) activity. In cell lines, NF1-deletion had a dual effect on CDK4 activity. First, by promoting ER recruitment to CCND1 …

Hippocrates And Nightingale: Ancient Medicine And Modern Nursing, Callie Wiedle
Hippocrates And Nightingale: Ancient Medicine And Modern Nursing, Callie Wiedle
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
This presentation aims to examine and understand the influence that Hippocrates’ fundamental theories of medicine had on Florence Nightingale’s development of modern nursing care. Hippocrates has gained the nickname “the father of modern medicine” and Nightingale has claimed the title “the mother of modern nursing”. This presentation will argue that without Hipporcates’ revolutionary ideas in medicine the framework of modern nursing would have taken much longer to develop, if it was ever developed into what we know today. Nightingale took Hippocrates’ revolutionary ideas regarding hygiene, the environment, and holistic patient care; and adapted them into the systematic approach to modern …

Education, Evaluation, And Impact Of A Delegation Learning Session In The Care Pair Model, Tiffany Michelle Whitney
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
This study examines the relationship of a structured educational intervention related to registered nurse (RN) delegated practice within the Care Pair Model (CPM) in a medical-surgical unit for its potential to expand the utilization of Nursing Assistants (NAs) in the nursing shortage in health care. CPM employs NAs as complement staff for RNs thus shortening workloads and improving patient care but relies on the RN's ability to communicate clearly and delegate responsibilities. A literature review done identifies that there is a gap in available information about CPM and delegation and thus this study looks at the educational intervention of delegation. …

Race To Robustness: Adaptation To Globalization In Authoritarian Regimes Of The Middle East, Lexi Eid
The Dialogue
The Middle East has been notably absent from the wave of democratization and failed to adapt to globalization since the 1990s. In the Middle Eastern countries, the economy has largely stagnated and the political system has remained authoritarian despite popular revolts during the Arab Spring. Earlier literature often emphasized the cultural and religious differences between the Middle East and the rest of the world. However, the Arab Spring proved that the Middle East could be a part of the democratization wave. More recent literature attempts to explain this surge of public response to the regime and explores how the authoritarian …

Constraints And Conservatism: The Effect Of Presidential Choices On Voting Patterns Of Supreme Court Justices, Tyler Mccall
The Dialogue
The decisions of the Supreme Court are constantly featured in news headlines with the accusation that the core institution of the judicial branch is completely politicized. In fact, justices are directly chosen by presidents who have clear political and constitutional agendas. But what about justices whose voting behavior and opinions seem less politically motivated than others? One major answer to that query may lie in the difference between constrained and unconstrained choices. When a president chooses a nominee based on political promises made or limitations imposed by other branches of government, that choice is constrained because those nominees must appeal …
Understanding Child Noncompliance In The Early Care Setting, Melody Mann
Understanding Child Noncompliance In The Early Care Setting, Melody Mann
McNair Research Journal SJSU
This study examines how teachers respond to children’s noncompliance in
early care settings. This structured observational study will focus on the
moment-to-moment interactions occurring within the preschool classroom
between both the child and teacher. It is predicted that (1) teacher’s direct
bids to children will promote greater instances of child compliance than
indirect bids, and (2) teachers’ responsive language will promote greater
instances of child compliance than restrictive language. The results of this
study will contribute to existing knowledge about the nature of teacher
child interactions in the early care settings.

Same Face, Different Name - Colonialism, Colonization, And Capitalism: How To Combat The Insidious Capitalist Individualism That Denies Basic Human Rights To Us Citizens Via Community Centric Bartering, Nadia Loney
McNair Research Journal SJSU
This paper examines the effects of colonialism, colonization, and capitalism
on the social fabric of the United States and how severing key connections
within society has hindered the direct benefits of community. As has been
tested in various cities around the world, intentional bartering can create a
sustainable community and combat the devastating effects that these
systems have had on the environment and the escalation of violence both
internally and globally. Art aimed at community rebuilding and a
decentralization of the US dollar, can help facilitate innovation that heal
various social wounds.

Maladaptive daydreaming (MD) is a persistent mental activity
characterized by immersive, excessive daydreaming that disrupts daily
life. This study examines the effectiveness of self-regulation strategies
in managing MD, including cognitive techniques, behavioral
adjustments, technology-assisted cues, and environmental
modifications. Using a single-subject ABA design, each intervention
phase lasted one week, with MD episodes tracked through self-reported
diaries and EEG monitoring. The results demonstrated that cognitive
reframing and task switching produced the most sustained reductions in
MD episodes, while technology-assisted cues had diminishing
effectiveness over time due to adaptation. Environmental modifications,
particularly workspace reorganization, con- tributed to long-term
improvements, while lighting adjustments …
