Gaming As Therapeutic Modality For Military Veterans: Evidence, Mechanisms, And Program Design, Piper Hutson, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
This study synthesizes interdisciplinary evidence on game-based interventions for military veterans, mapping neurological mechanisms to clinically relevant outcomes while outlining design principles for community programs that leverage interactive media. The review characterizes how structured gameplay supports emotional regulation through attentional control, predictable feedback schedules, and reward-mediated learning that elevates motivation and mood; links to dopaminergic signaling and reduced rumination suggest plausible pathways for affective stabilization. Executive functions receive targeted engagement via strategy, puzzle, and action mechanics that demand working memory, cognitive flexibility, inhibition, and rapid decision-making, providing ecologically valid practice with measurable transfer to daily functioning. Emergency preparedness and security are comparatively new academic fields, but they have grown tremendously in the last ten years.1 Colleges and universities all over the United States and Canada are adding and expanding programs dedicated to various facets of these subjects. While the specific subtopics and focal areas can vary by program, they all explore threat assessment, risk management, and disaster mitigation in some capacity. Emergency preparedness or emergency management programs prepare students to pursue careers dealing with crisis mitigation and response, whether that crisis is a result of natural disaster, climate change, war, civil unrest, infrastructure failure, economic instability, …
Leveraging The Federal Trust Responsibility To Safeguard Net Neutrality On Tribal Lands, Morgan O. Schaack
Leveraging The Federal Trust Responsibility To Safeguard Net Neutrality On Tribal Lands, Morgan O. Schaack
University of Chicago Law Review
The internet plays a crucial role in modern life, but equal access to it is not guaranteed. This inequality is only starker since the recent overruling of the Chevron doctrine that afforded agencies deference in their interpretation of statutes and the second Trump administration’s hostility toward net neutrality––a policy that prevents internet service providers from charging more money for access to faster internet while slowing other users’ access. For those living on tribal lands, rescission of net neutrality policies has unique implications due to the federal government’s trust responsibility to American Indians.
The trust responsibility is a long-standing and deeply …

One Hundred Ninety-Nine Dead Birds: Review Of The Scientific Basis Of Ecological Incident Reporting Requirements For Pesticide Registrants Under Fifra § 6(A)(2), Nimish B. Vyas, Cynthia Palmer
Buffalo Environmental Law Journal
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates pesticide use in the United States. The EPA is charged by the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) with ensuring that a pesticide will not cause unreasonable adverse effects on the environment. Incident reports (documentation of exposure and injury from pesticide applications) can serve as a reality check on the pesticide registration decisions made by the EPA scientists and risk managers. The EPA collects incident reports on human, domestic animal, and ecological injury. The FIFRA section 6(a)(2) rule requires the pesticide registrant (generally, the company or other entity that wishes to market …
Manatees In Hot Water: How The Florida Manatee Became Dependent On Power Plant Warm Water Outfalls, Michaela Morris
Manatees In Hot Water: How The Florida Manatee Became Dependent On Power Plant Warm Water Outfalls, Michaela Morris
Buffalo Environmental Law Journal
Each winter in Florida, thousands of manatees gather in the warm water outflows of power plants. These refuges play a crucial role for the Florida manatee: when ocean temperatures drop, manatees shelter at these artificial sources to survive. But in recent years, thousands of manatees wintering at the Florida Power & Light Company’s Cape Canaveral Clean Energy Center have died. The reason? Seagrass beds––a primary food source for manatees––are vanishing, killed off by pollution from agricultural, industrial, and residential sources.
This Article documents the historical, political, and regulatory conditions that led to manatees’ reliance on power plants. First, the political …

The integration of this novel genAI tool into each student team was an intentional pedagogical technique, introduced in response to the challenges that newly-formed student teams may encounter as they rapidly come together and potentially …
Premenopausal Transition In Neurodivergent Women With Musculoskeletal Syndromes: Mechanisms, Risks, And Neuroinclusive Therapeutics, Piper Hutson, James Hutson
Premenopausal Transition In Neurodivergent Women With Musculoskeletal Syndromes: Mechanisms, Risks, And Neuroinclusive Therapeutics, Piper Hutson, James Hutson
Faculty Scholarship
Neurodivergent women with chronic musculoskeletal syndromes experience disproportionate premenopausal symptom burdens that are poorly characterized in extant clinical paradigms and practice. The compounded interplay of estrogen fluctuations in premenopause with sensory–executive differences and baseline nociception from joint or connective-tissue pathology yields intensified pain, mood dysregulation, and functional decline. Evidence indicates estrogen modulates nociception, neuroinflammation, bone remodeling, and monoaminergic signaling; premenopausal variability magnifies pain, affective lability, and cognitive drift—effects accentuated in autism and ADHD. Coexisting hypermobility, fibromyalgia, or connective-tissue disorders compromise joint integrity and proprioception, increasing susceptibility to estrogen-dependent changes in bone microarchitecture and tendon homeostasis. This article advances an integrative …

The Fate Of Intra- And Extracellular Antibiotic Resistance Genes Through Advanced Wastewater Treatment Process, Celestene Adrianne Sebag
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
More areas across the globe are becoming affected by water stress or water scarcity. The decrease in available freshwater due to overconsumption reveals the direct need to consider other sources for necessities such as drinking water or food production. Agricultural irrigation uses 70% of the world’s freshwater, making the focus on safe and reliable reclaimed water for agricultural reuse imperative. However, contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), such as antibiotics and their resulting antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), can spread and affect human health if reclaimed water is not treated to the proper level. Antibiotics are widely used in human medicine and …
