Access Barriers To Early Childhood Development Surveillance And Screenings: Insights From Pediatric Office Providers, Pamela Russell Ledesma Sep 2025

Access Barriers To Early Childhood Development Surveillance And Screenings: Insights From Pediatric Office Providers, Pamela Russell Ledesma

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Scholarly literature review found a gap in the identification of barriers experienced by pediatric office providers (POPs) for the provision of early childhood development (ECD) surveillance among culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) children under the age of three years. The barriers may inhibit access to recommended screenings at defined milestones during the state of neurogenesis, whereby a child’s life trajectory may be negatively impacted and further handicap society at large. This qualitative study aimed to explore the access barriers and remedial strategies identified in the reconstructed narratives of southeast Florida POPs. The research design was premised on the behavioral model …

Understanding The Impact Of Patient Engagement In Effective Management Of Chronic Conditions, Tracey Phillips Sep 2025

Understanding The Impact Of Patient Engagement In Effective Management Of Chronic Conditions, Tracey Phillips

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This study was developed to address the partner site's need for an evidence-based approach to improving patient engagement among elderly individuals managing chronic diseases. Low engagement, often driven by poor provider–patient communication, non-compliance, and limited use of healthcare technology, was identified as a barrier to effective self-management and optimal health outcomes. Guided by the social cognitive theory, behavioral, cognitive, and environmental factors influencing engagement and self-efficacy were examined. Two practice-focused questions examined: identifying barriers to engagement and the impact of the provider–patient relationship on outcomes. The purpose of the project was to develop an evidence-based approach to enhance patient engagement. …

The Social Aesthetics Of Recognition, Italo Alves Sep 2025

The Social Aesthetics Of Recognition, Italo Alves

Dissertations

The history of social philosophy is a history of suspicion toward the aesthetic (1). However, since we apprehend social reality fundamentally through its aesthetic appearances, an account is needed of how “the aesthetic” must enter the social-philosophical discourse, particularly in reconstructive models of social critique. I call this account “social aesthetics.” Social aesthetics illuminates how certain social experiences generate normative claims even in the lack of discursive articulation. (2) I argue that the philosophy of recognition, concerned with this relationship between social experience and normative claim-making, contains an unacknowledged aesthetic dimension, which I uncover through a critical reading of Axel …

Examining The Impact Of Technology-Enhanced Peer Mentorship On First-Year University Students’ Mental Health And Academic Success, Maya Hareli Sep 2025

Examining The Impact Of Technology-Enhanced Peer Mentorship On First-Year University Students’ Mental Health And Academic Success, Maya Hareli

Dissertations

Poor mental health among first-year college students has been associated with a plethora of unfavorable outcomes including worsening mental health problems later in college as well as declines in academic performance, rates of college retention, and postgraduate employment and income potential. While demand for mental health services on college campuses is high, there are various barriers to accessing these services. Peer mentoring is a resource-efficient solution for curbing college student mental health and academic challenges; however, the effects of past mentoring programs are inconsistent. Additionally, technology-delivered interventions (TDIs) have been shown to yield positive outcomes for young adults along various …

For over 25 years, the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration has claimed to observe an annual modulation signal, suggesting the existence of dark matter interactions. However, no experiment using different target materials has observed a dark matter signal consistent with their result. To address this puzzle, the COSINE-100 collaboration conducted a model-independent test using sodium iodide crystal detectors, the same target material as DAMA/LIBRA. Analyzing data collected over 6.4 years by the effective mass of 61.3 kilograms, with improved energy calibration and time-dependent background modeling, we found no evidence of an annual modulation signal, challenging the DAMA/LIBRA result with a confidence level greater …

Coping Strategies Of African American Cisgender Female Veterans After Experiencing Military Sexual Trauma, Denise Loretta Bullock Sep 2025

Coping Strategies Of African American Cisgender Female Veterans After Experiencing Military Sexual Trauma, Denise Loretta Bullock

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The United States Veterans Health Administration (VHA) provides care for female veterans who have experienced military sexual trauma (MST), which is harassment and physical assault that occurs while on active military duty. This generic qualitative study involved understanding coping skills of cisgender African American female veterans who experienced MST and the impact of race on their coping skills. A significant gap exists in literature regarding how African American female veterans have coped with MST. This study involved using the transactional theory of stress and coping, which asserts coping responses reflect an imbalance between demands of a person’s environment and what …

Advancing Ckd Diagnosis: Race-Free Egfr, Cystatin C, And Genetic Insights, Halah Tariq Albar

Saudi Toxicology Journal

Globally, the rates of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are increasing due to the increasing incidence of hypertension, obesity, and diabetes mellitus. Early detection and treatment of kidney disease are essential in improving health outcomes. Estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is used to diagnose, stage, and manage CKD. CKD biomarkers are broadly categorized into traditional (serum creatinine), emerging (cystatin C), and disease specific (Interleukin-6). The purpose of this narrative review is to synthesize the current evidence regarding the use of eGFR in diverse populations. The initial eGFR equations included race variables, which created a controversial debate about their relevancy and has …

School of Health Professions

Introduction Difficulty with walking can lead to reduced quality of life for people with Parkinson’s disease (pwPD); improving walking is considered a treatment priority. Drug therapies can control PD symptoms; however, pwPD often still experience mobility problems. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) induces movement in weak muscles via external electrical stimulation. FES is used in stroke and multiple sclerosis patients to correct dropped foot by stimulating the common peroneal nerve and is associated with improved quality of life and mobility. The randomised feasibility study preceding this definitive study showed that daily FES can produce a clinically meaningful improvement in walking speed …

Objective: Approximately 30% of the 700 000 US Gulf War Veterans (GWVs) report symptoms collectively termed Gulf War Illness (GWI), a multisymptom illness of uncertain pathophysiology. Prior studies in GWI focus on overlap with irritable bowel syndrome. This study examines the associations between upper gastrointestinal (UGI) symptoms, GWI and specialty GI care.

Methods: This cross-sectional study analysed GWVs referred to a Veterans Health Administration clinical War-Related Illness and Injury Study Center (2008-2020). Symptoms, demographics, military service and clinical history were obtained from self-reported intake packets. GWI was defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria requiring moderate-to-severe symptoms …

Fathers' Racial Differences In Perceived Workplace-Induced Stereotype Threat: Impacts On Sense Of Belonging, Job Satisfaction, And Turnover, Frances Evalyne Kealiimahiaiokalani Hampton Sep 2025

Fathers' Racial Differences In Perceived Workplace-Induced Stereotype Threat: Impacts On Sense Of Belonging, Job Satisfaction, And Turnover, Frances Evalyne Kealiimahiaiokalani Hampton

Dissertations and Theses

Black fathers (BFs) face unique workplace challenges due to racialized and gendered stereotypes that undermine their legitimacy as men, workers, and parents. Drawing on Stereotype Threat Theory (STT) and Stereotype Embodiment Theory (SET), this study examined how workplace-induced stereotype threat (WIST) affects BFs' job attitudes and turnover intentions (TIs). I hypothesized that BFs would report higher WIST than White fathers (WFs), and that WIST would mediate the effects of race-related perceptions on job satisfaction (JS), sense of belonging (SOB), and TIs. In addition, perceived organizational support (POS) was tested as a moderator on the relationships between WIST and these job-related …

Effects Of Gratitude, Mindfulness, And Goal Setting On College Athletes' Well-Being, Performance, And Motivation, Vanessa E. Vanwoerkom Sep 2025

Effects Of Gratitude, Mindfulness, And Goal Setting On College Athletes' Well-Being, Performance, And Motivation, Vanessa E. Vanwoerkom

Student Works

Because of the emphasis of sports in today’s society, athletes experience near-constant pressure from the public, coaches, and fans. This can make it difficult to control feelings of stress, anxiety, and even depression. Positive psychology interventions have been shown to be useful in teaching athletes to cope with difficult emotions and to handle the stress that accompanied advanced competition (Gabana, 2018). The benefits of positive affect have been shown to enhance motivation and attention, facilitate coping with hardship, and increase problem-solving skills (McCarthy, 2011). The practices of gratitude, mindfulness, and goal setting are some of the most effective skills taught …

Validation Of The Yraffle: An Implementation Of The Raffle Inventory For Loot Box Engagement In A Youth Cohort, Ryan Statton, James Close, Joanne Lloyd, Laura Louise Nicklin, Stuart Spicer, Helen Lloyd

School of Psychology

BackgroundPlay is pivotal in human development, and as such the human experience. In young people, play is increasingly taking the form of video gaming—capturing a large share of the entertainment sector and potentially exposing young people to new instances of harmful behaviour. Loot boxes (purchasable items where the contents are chance based, which have structural and psychological similarities to gambling) generate significant income for the sector. They have, however, been understudied in young people. The present research validates a lightly modified version of the Reasons and Facilitators for Loot box Engagement (RAFFLE) inventory in a youth population – the youth …

“This Is The Job Now”: A Phenomenological Study Of Meaning Making In University Faculty Regarding Role Expectations In Response To Student Crises, Leslie Watland

Dissertations

In recent years, faculty members in higher education found themselves at the intersection of rising student mental health concerns and increasing institutional expectations regarding student support. While universities traditionally framed faculty as educators and researchers, faculty roles now require engagement in emotional labor and crisis management—often without corresponding training. This dissertation explores how instructors at one university navigate these expanding expectations, examining their self-understanding, institutional positioning, and the broader implications of compliance care work. Compliance care work is a term developed in this study to describe the bureaucratization of faculty involvement in student well-being. It is an institutionalized response to …

More Than Trauma: The Story Of Intergenerational Survival, Tiffany Fang Sep 2025

More Than Trauma: The Story Of Intergenerational Survival, Tiffany Fang

Dissertations

Parental trauma can have a profound effect on children. The process of passing along traumatic experiences, known as the intergenerational transmission of trauma (IGT) and the process of passing along adaptations to these adverse circumstances, known as the intergenerational transmission of resilience (IGR), have been explored in populations such as survivors of the Holocaust and war refugees (Danieli et al., 2017; Kellermann, 2001; Sangalang & Vang, 2017). This study sought to extend findings to Chinese American immigrant families, many of whom experienced trauma in the form of war, sociopolitical violence, and poverty in 20th-century China. Despite the presence of these …

Exploring General Education Teachers' Awareness Of Ableism In Elementary School, Hana Elizabeth Polachek Sep 2025

Exploring General Education Teachers' Awareness Of Ableism In Elementary School, Hana Elizabeth Polachek

Dissertations

Ableism, or prejudice and discrimination on the basis of dis/ability is of growing interest to both practitioners and researchers (Branco et al., 2019; Friedman & Awsumb, 2019). In the United States, there are federal laws that protect public education as a fundamental right regardless of a student’s ability status. Prior researchers found that educators can hold biases with respect to a student’s disability label (Bassey et al., 2020; Donohue & Bornman, 2015; Freer, 2018; Gifford & Knott, 2016; Ko & Boswell, 2013; Lucas, et al., 2009; Nah & Tan, 2021; Pachiţa & Gherguţ, 2021; Röhm et al., 2022; Wüthrich & …

Evaluating The Active Learning Experience Of Prelicensure Nursing Students By Role And Level In Simulation, Delisa Flynn

Dissertations

As the complexity of healthcare continues to grow, it is essential that nursing graduates enter the workforce with strong clinical judgment, confidence, and practice readiness. Simulation is an active learning strategy that creates a realistic, hands-on experiences for learners. Despite its widespread use, the impact of simulation roles within a simulated experience (participant versus observer) on student engagement remains unclear, particularly across different levels of nursing education. This study investigated differences in active learning engagement among sophomore and senior prelicensure nursing students (N = 161) based on their assigned role in a high-fidelity simulation scenario. Grounded in Kolb’s Experiential Learning …

Adolescent Social Media Use And Complete Mental Health: Examining The Intersections Of Identity, Social-Emotional Skills, And Social Support, Reese Hyzer

Dissertations

Social media and technology use have become ubiquitous for today’s adolescents. With the rise in technology use, mental health disorder diagnoses have also increased. Despite the increase in concern for both adolescent social media use and mental health, many schools, parents, and youth service clinicians do not have the knowledge or resources to intervene effectively. The current study explores two research questions. The first is to evaluate the moderating effect of social-emotional skills and social support on the relationship between social media use and mental health through structural equation modeling (SEM). The second research question is to explore whether this …
