Impact Of Gut Microbiota On Drug Metabolism And Absorption, Kieran Burke, Yanyan Li
Impact Of Gut Microbiota On Drug Metabolism And Absorption, Kieran Burke, Yanyan Li
Pharmacy Faculty Scholarship
Purpose of Review: Complex interactions between gut microbiota and various drugs can significantly influence drug phar-macokinetics. We examined recent in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo studies to understand how microbiota directly influences drug metabolism and absorption in order to inform future research and clinical practice. Recent Findings: Considerable progress has been made for multiple drug classes using in vitro anaerobic culturing assays and ex vivo systems with human fecal communities, as well as animal models that have provided insights into both direct microbial metabolism of drugs and indirect host-microbiota interactions via regulation of host enzymes or transporters. However, how …

Plastic use in food production—known as plasticulture—has transformed agriculture and aquaculture globally. Plasticulture gained momentum in the mid-20th century with the development of novel plastic materials, and by 2009, U.S. farmers used over 200 million pounds of plastic films annually. Though plastics have increased yields and efficiency, they now pose environmental hazards through the release of microplastics (MPs) and chemicals. Despite extensive documentation of MPs in the environment, their role in U.S. food production and impacts on crop, livestock, and aquaculture health remain underexplored. In regions like the Pacific Northwest (PNW), with robust agricultural and aquaculture sectors, plastics from films, …

Non-Neutralizing Antibodies To Influenza A Matrix-Protein-2-Ectodomain Are Broadly Effective Therapeutics And Resistant To Viral Escape Mutations., Teha Kim, Lynn Bimler, Sydney L Ronzulli, Amber Y Song, Scott K Johnson, Cheryl A Jones, S Mark Tompkins, Silke Paust
Faculty Research 2025
Influenza A viruses remain a global health threat, yet no universal antibody therapy exists. Clinical programs have centered on neutralizing mAbs, only to be thwarted by strain specificity and rapid viral escape. We instead engineered three non-neutralizing IgG2a mAbs that target distinct, overlapping epitopes within the conserved N terminus of the M2 ectodomain (M2e). Combined at low dose, this "triple M2e-mAb" confers robust prophylactic and therapeutic protection in mice challenged with diverse human and zoonotic IAV strains, including highly pathogenic variants. Therapeutic efficacy depends on Fc-mediated effector activity via FcγRI, FcγRIII, and FcγRIV, rather than in vitro neutralization. Serial passaging …

Thermo-Driven Structural And Optical Variations For The Improved Bidirectional Photodetection Of Ag2o@ Cdte Thin Films, Ahmed M. Nawar, Ahmed Ramzy, Shehab E. Ali, A. A.M. Farag, Ahmed M. El-Mahalawy
Nanotechnology Research Centre
Bidirectional photodetection is an emerging functionality in advanced optoelectronic systems, characterized by the ability of a photodetector to respond to the incident light under both forward and reverse biasing voltage. For this aim, a layer of silver oxide (Ag2O) is deposited on CdTe thin films, and then, directly, the fabricated Ag2O@CdTe samples on quartz and n-Si substrates are thermally annealed (from 100 to 400◦C). In general, the surface topography is driven by the post-annealing process; besides that, the crystallinity of Ag2O@CdTe samples is improved at 200◦C. The optical characteristics of transmittance and reflectance spectrophotometric measurements at normal incidence revealed a …

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Pulmonary toxicity can occur during radiation therapy of the lungs. Dose metrics evaluated at the lobar level can improve the ability to predict toxicity. Contouring lung lobes is challenging and time consuming. Currently there are limited dosimetry studies evaluating the dose to lung lobes. The purpose of this work was to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) lung lobe auto-contouring algorithm using radiation therapy planning images.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty lung cancer patients from two institutions were analyzed, and a clinician contoured all five lung lobes [left upper lobe (LUL), left lower lobe (LLL), right upper lobe (RUL), …

2025 Private Capital Markets Report, Craig R. Everett
2025 Private Capital Markets Report, Craig R. Everett
Pepperdine Private Capital Markets Report
The Pepperdine private cost of capital survey was originally launched in 2007 and is the first comprehensive and simultaneous investigation of the major private capital market segments. This year’s survey specifically examined the behavior of senior lenders, asset‐based lenders, mezzanine funds, private equity groups, venture capital firms, angel investors, privately‐held businesses, investment bankers, business brokers, limited partners, and business appraisers. The Pepperdine survey investigated, for each private capital market segment, the important benchmarks that must be met in order to qualify for capital, how much capital is typically accessible, what the required returns are for extending capital in today’s economic …

Wave intensity analysis provides a novel approach to understanding the dynamic interactions between the right ventricle and pulmonary vasculature, particularly in pulmonary hypertension, a condition characterized by elevated pulmonary arterial pressures and vascular remodeling. This prospective study used wave intensity analysis to evaluate right ventricular and pulmonary vascular mechanics in 22 participants with pulmonary hypertension (including precapillary, isolated postcapillary, and combined pre/postcapillary pulmonary hypertension), and three without pulmonary hypertension. Forward and backward compression and decompression waves were quantified at rest and during incremental exercise (25, 50, and 75 W). Relationships between metrics of wave intensity analysis, hemodynamics, right ventricular function, …

Understanding the processes that drive genetic divergence and species formation is central to evolutionary biology. Invertebrates with low dispersal ability, such as pseudoscorpions, are especially prone to cryptic diversification due to their occupancy of niche microhabitats and sensitivity to landscape barriers. Despite their ecological roles as predators and bioindicators, pseudoscorpions remain one of the least studied arachnid groups, with limited taxonomic resolution and few integrative studies. This research focuses on the genus Mundochthonius in the Pacific Northwest, particularly M. pacificus, a morphologically conserved species whose true diversity and distribution remain poorly understood.

Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are value-based care (VBC) models aimed at improving cost and quality through prevention to counter the traditional fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare care model, which disincentivizes preventive care and risks misuse and overutilization. Some primary care practices purporting VBC capabilities have attracted private capital investors, yet whether external investment improves cost outcomes has not yet been definitively established. This dissertation examines whether investor-backed primary care organizations participating in MA demonstrate statistically significant reductions in per-patient, per-year claims costs after investment for seven ambulatory care–sensitive conditions. The study applies two-way fixed-effects regression models to a sample of 98,014 patient-year …

The viral cap-snatching mechanism, facilitated by the endonuclease (EndoN) domain of viral polymerases, is critical for viral gene transcription and translation and is therefore an attractive target for antiviral development. The successful development of EndoN inhibitor XOFLUZA (Baloxavir marboxil) has opened the possibility that the EndoN domain of negative-sense RNA viruses (NSVs) can be targeted in a similar fashion. Rift Valley Fever Virus (RVFV) belongs to the

Staff Education To Pediatric Healthcare Providers On How To Prevent Unintentional Childhood Injuries., Peter Cleveland Collins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This staff education quality improvement Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was focused on teaching pediatric healthcare providers how to provide education during wellness visits to prevent unintentional childhood injury. The practice problem at the clinic was that pediatric providers lacked knowledge about injury prevention. A literature review showed that unintentional childhood injuries are the leading cause of death in this population. The practice-focused question determined was to determine if, after educating providers, they have improved knowledge and intent to educate their patients. I used the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation (ADDIE) model to guide this project. The participants …
