BACKGROUND: Identifying preventive measures for adolescent mental health is a global public health priority, as poor mental health heightens the risk of early death from related issues, including suicide. This study examined the associations between adherence to the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines and anxiety among a nationally representative sample of South Korean adolescents, using an intersectional identity framework.
METHODS: Data from the 2020-2022 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Surveys were analyzed. Adolescents aged 12-17 years were grouped based on adherence to guidelines: none, physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior (SB), sleep, two guideline combinations, and all three. Anxiety was the mental health outcome. …

Design Of Non-Invasive Device To Measure Differential Flow In The Carotid Arteries, Rachel Elisabeth Jacquay
Design Of Non-Invasive Device To Measure Differential Flow In The Carotid Arteries, Rachel Elisabeth Jacquay
Masters Theses
A stroke is categorized as quickly developing symptoms of cerebral function loss with no apparent cause other than that of vascular origin. Stroke detection in prehospital settings, such as an ambulance, is subjective and often requires additional imaging methods to obtain a definitive conclusion. Common non-invasive methods for stroke detection include Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) scans. Still, these techniques can be expensive, time-consuming, and dangerous due to exposure to strong magnetic fields and radiation. Two additional methods have been proposed for quick, inexpensive, and non-invasive stroke detection, namely Ultrasound Doppler and Pressure Transducer. A simplified physical …

Cyberbullying Defensive Strategy In Social Media Sessions Via Machine Learning And Cyber Deception, Mohammad Shafiqul Islam
Masters Theses
Cyberbullying poses a significant challenge on social media, where traditional detection systems struggle with the nuanced and dynamic nature of online abuse. This thesis proposes an integrated framework that combines large language model (LLM)-based detection with generative decoy responses to enable real-time protection for victims on platforms like Instagram and WhatsApp. Using models such as Mistral 7B, GPT-3.5 Turbo, and Phi-3 Mini, prompt-based one-shot learning achieved 87% detection accuracy and a 5% F1-score improvement over zero-shot approaches, demonstrating robust identification of text-based bullying. A novel synthetic dataset of 98 multi-turn conversations, designed with diverse subtypes and evaluated for realism, addressed …

Effective environmental monitoring is critical for preventing microbial and allergenic cross-contamination. However, manual swabbing methods, commonly used to verify hygienic conditions, are prone to inconsistent results because of variability in pressure, coverage, and techniques. Two novel solutions will be explored to address these challenges: a robotic swabbing system with tactile sensing control, and a fluorescence/absorbance spectrometer for non-contact, protein-based residue detection. The robotic system was evaluated against trained and untrained humans, measuring water pickup, surface coverage, and pressure consistency. Concurrently, the fluorescence system analyzed model poultry protein soil to correlate spectral patterns with contamination levels. The robotic system demonstrated statistically …

Background: Kidney function declines with age, largely due to chronic low-grade inflammation. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have demonstrated immunomodulatory effects in certain immune-mediated kidney diseases, but their role in preserving renal function in aging individuals without chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains unclear. This study presents secondary outcome findings from a randomized clinical trial in Parkinson's disease (PD), evaluating the impact of allogeneic human bone marrow-derived MSCs (allo-hMSCs) on kidney function in an aging population with PD with preserved renal function.
Methods: Subjects with PD aged 50-79 years with baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) > 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 were randomized to …

EGFRex20 insertions (EGFRex20ins) can be classified as near- and far-loop based on the insertion location, however, the impact of location on responses to various EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) is poorly understood. In vitro studies show that afatinib, poziotinib, and zipalertinib more potently inhibited near-loop than far-loop insertions, whereas mobocertinib has similar IC50 in both groups. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that near-loop insertions have multiple conformational states and lower transitional energy than far-loop insertions. ZENITH20 trial cohort 1 (NCT03318939) evaluates poziotinib in EGFRex20 NSCLC patients (n = 115) and demonstrates an objective response rate of 14.8% (95% Confidence …

Turkish Journal of Zoology
This study examines the structure, distribution, and environmental influences on planktonic communities in the Romanian Black Sea, based on data collected from Black Sea national monitoring stations in June 2023. We assessed the qualitative and quantitative composition of phytoplankton, microzooplankton, mesozooplankton, macrozooplankton, and ichthyoplankton, alongside key environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and nutrient concentrations (nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, and silicate). The results highlight the dominance of dinoflagellates within the phytoplankton community, while copepods constitute the most abundant mesozooplankton group. Species from the Codonellidae family mainly represent microzooplankton diversity, while macrozooplankton is largely dominated by the scyphozoan Aurelia …

There is a significant knowledge gap in how T cells promote emphysema in smokers with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA seq) analysis of human samples and relevant clinical data can provide new mechanistic insights into disease pathogenesis. We generated a human lung scRNA seq dataset with extensive disease characteristic annotation and analyzed a second independent scRNA seq dataset to examine the pathophysiological role of T cells in emphysema. Comparisons of pulmonary immune landscapes in emphysematous (E)-COPD, non-emphysematous (NE)-COPD, and control showed positive enrichment of T cells in E-COPD. Pathway analyses identified upregulated inflammatory states in CD4 …

To better characterize the potential biological mechanisms underlying insulin resistance (IR) and dementia, we derive cross-population and population specific polygenic scores [PSs] for fasting insulin and IR-related partitioned PSs [pPSs]. We conduct a cross-sectional study of the associations of these genetic scores with neurological outcomes in >17k participants (36% men, mean age 55 yrs) from the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) program (50% Non-Hispanic White, 23% Black/African American, 21% Hispanic/Latino American, and 4% Asian American). We report significant negative associations (P < 0.002) of the cross-population (P = 1.3 × 10-5) and European (PEA = 3.0 × 10-8) fasting insulin PSs with total cranial volume, and of a metabolic syndrome European PS with general cognitive function (BEA = -0.13, PEA = 0.0002) and lateral ventricular volume (BEA = 0.09, PEA = 0.002). We identify suggestive negative associations (P < 0.007) of metabolic syndrome and obesity pPSs with general cognitive function, and of lipodystrophy pPSs with total cranial volume. A higher genetic predisposition to IR is associated with lower brain size, and a genetic predisposition to specific IR-related type 2 diabetes subtypes, such as metabolic syndrome and mechanisms of IR mediated through obesity and lipodystrophy, is potentially involved in cognitive decline.

The timed contraction and relaxation of myofibers in tissues such as the heart and skeletal muscle occur via the tightly regulated movement of calcium ions into and out of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). In skeletal muscle, this phenomenon enables humans to exercise, perform day-to-day tasks, and to breathe. Sarcolipin, a small regulatory protein, prevents calcium ions from entering the SR by binding to and inhibiting SERCA, contributing to myofiber contraction. Disruptions in sarcolipin (SLN) expression are implicated in the pathophysiology of obesity and musculoskeletal disease. However, the mechanisms regulating sarcolipin expression are not clearly understood. We recently showed that site-1 …

Congenital complete heart block (CCHB) is a rare condition associated with significant fetal and neonatal mortality. It may present as an isolated conduction abnormality in association with autoimmune disease, or in conjunction with congenital heart defects including heterotaxy-polysplenia syndrome. Early prenatal diagnosis and coordinated perinatal care are critical for improving outcomes. We present 2 cases of prenatally diagnosed CCHB. The first occurred in a fetus with heterotaxy-polysplenia syndrome, and the second in the setting of maternal anti-SSA antibody exposure. Both fetuses developed progressive bradycardia, with heart rates declining to < 50 beats/min, necessitating close fetal surveillance and individualized perinatal management. Preterm delivery and prompt placement of temporary pacing wires allowed initial stabilization before eventual definitive management, resulting in survival. The successful outcomes in these neonates highlight the critical role of multidisciplinary prenatal care, timely delivery planning, and early postnatal intervention in improving survival in fetuses diagnosed with CCHB.

In the present investigation, silver (Ag) and copper (Cu) nanostructured particles were synthesized from Eremurus plant by means of an environmentally benign methodology in which plant extracts served as both reducing and stabilizing agents. The resultant nanostructured particles were subjected to characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS). XRD analysis confirmed development of Ag nanostructured particles with face-centered cubic (fcc) structure and also Cu nanostructured particles with cubic form. Moreover, the average crystallite dimensions obtained for Ag and Cu were 18.3 nm and 65.7 nm, …
