"Our River Is Full Of Trash And Many Fish Die" Children's Voices From Pasuruan, Indonesia: Discursive Strategies In Positive Discourse Analysis For Sustainability, Bambang Prastio, Ahsani Maulidina, Agung Rinaldy Malik, Achmad Tantowi Azis
The Qualitative Report
Addressing river pollution and understanding the role of children in environmental conservation are essential for maintaining ecosystem health and sustainability. This study used positive discourse analysis to explore children's discourse about river pollution in Pasuruan, East Java, Indonesia. Data were collected using walk-and talk ethnographic interviews with 15 children aged 7 to 11 years. The findings reveal that these children employed five discursive strategies: (1) nomination: metaphor, comparison, and cultural practices; (2) predication: positive attitude in the forms of disposition and behavior; (3) argumentation: contrast and parallelism; (4) perspectivisation, involving a type of religious representation that includes references to the …
A Not-Quite-Assessment Of Assessing Autoethnography: Ekphrastic Compositions On Quality, Clarity, And (Un)Certainty In Autoethnography, Aaron Hoy
The Qualitative Report
Taking an ekphrastic approach, this essay responds to and reflects on my reading of Assessing Autoethnography: Notes on Analysis, Evaluation, and Craft by Andrew F. Herrmann and Tony E. Adams. It has three parts. First, I summarize the book’s central chapters and discuss their practical uses, especially as prompts for in-progress autoethnographies. Second, using clarity as a point of entry, I explore a tension I felt while reading the book—between the comforting utility of specific criteria and the marginalizing power of criteria themselves. Finally, I share a found poem composed in response to the book and reflect on the impermanent …

Sustainability Assessment Of Jointed Plain Concrete Pavements And Fibre-Reinforced Concrete Pavements, Ajeesh Koorikkattil, Sunitha K. Nayar, Veena Venudharan
C3 Symposium 2025
Ensuring sustainability of construction and maintenance is critical to the widespread application of fibre-reinforced concrete (FRC) for pavements, which offer higher performance and increased service life. However, investigations in terms of economic and environmental impact assessments are essential for assessing the extent of benefits from this technology. It is important since a large volume of concrete is being consumed for pavement construction worldwide and leads to significant environmental issues, including carbon emissions, resource extraction, energy consumption, air pollution, etc. Consequent to this understanding, this research focuses on the comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) to investigate the environmental impacts of the …

Cement For Net-Zero Future: Energy-Resource-Carbon Neutral And Multifunctional, Jialai Wang, Xinhua Liang
C3 Symposium 2025
Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)-based concrete, a cornerstone of modern infrastructure, is a major contributor to CO₂ emissions, resource depletion, and waste generation. OPC production accounts for 8% of global CO₂ emissions and consumes over 6 billion tons of raw materials annually, while concrete production uses 30 billion tons of aggregate and generates 2.2 billion tons of C&D waste yearly. This study introduces a novel manufacturing process that mitigates these impacts by utilizing waste streams as energy sources and raw materials while sequestering carbon as high-value CNTs. The resulting cement will enable next-generation concrete for resilient, net-zero infrastructure and advanced technologies …
Towards Carbon-Neutrality In Concrete: The Role Of Biochar In Air-Entrained And Non-Air-Entrained Systems As Sand Replacement, Mahdi Mirabrishami, Farshad Rajabipour
Towards Carbon-Neutrality In Concrete: The Role Of Biochar In Air-Entrained And Non-Air-Entrained Systems As Sand Replacement, Mahdi Mirabrishami, Farshad Rajabipour
C3 Symposium 2025
Biochar is a carbon-rich solid residue resulting from the pyrolysis or devolatilization of waste biomass (e.g., wood chips, sawdust, grass) at elevated temperatures in an oxygen-limited furnace. Biochar provides an effective pathway for atmospheric CO2 removal via photosynthesis in biomass, which is subsequently converted to biochar while also producing energy. Due to its carbon-negative footprint (-2.4 to -2.9 kg CO2eq/ kg biochar), biochar could be used to reduce or eliminate the net CO2 emission of concrete. This study aims to produce low-carbon to carbon-negative concrete mixtures by utilizing biochar as a partial to total replacement of natural sand while leveraging …

You Are What You Eat: Using Trademark Law To Address Consumer Confusion In Food Labeling, Brooke Raniere
Journal of Intellectual Property Law
America is experiencing a health crisis. Our grocery store promulgates illusions of endless food choices; however, this abundance is sustained by only a handful of dominating food conglomerates. With the increased centralization of power in the food supply system, foods have generally become ultra-processed and unhealthier. Companies often use strategic marketing through packaging design, labeling, and food names to capture additional consumers through health claims that often do not reflect these foods' contents. As American citizens' average health continues to decline, large food conglomerates have increasingly pushed the boundaries of what they can claim, creating vast confusion and mislabeling in …

Paws Off My Image: Why Rights Of Publicity Should Be Expanded, Lauren Didelot
Journal of Intellectual Property Law
In our increasingly digital world, exposure to fame and fortune has become more accessible than ever, and many pet owners have taken advantage of this. The rise of “petfluencers” has called into question the extent of available rights of these celebrity animals’ owners to protect and maintain their pet’s commercial value, thus preventing instances of unfair enrichment from other’s exploitation of their beloved animals. This Note argues for the acceptance of an animal’s right of publicity. We begin with an exploration of the right of publicity itself and its current applications. Next, we will discuss the intellectual property rights currently …

The Journey To Ebp Excellence In Healthcare: Overview, Trisha Saul, Cara Gallegos
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background. In the contemporary landscape of healthcare, evidence-based practice (EBP) has emerged as a cornerstone for ensuring optimal outcomes and enhancing the quality of care. EBP combines the best available evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences.1 It is well-documented that when nurses engage in EBP, it leads to better patient outcomes. Nevertheless, its implementation faces several obstacles. Nurses lack confidence in fundamental EBP skills and encounter barriers such as inadequate resources, insufficient leadership support, and a lack of EBP mentors. Successfully overcoming EBP barriers at the organizational level requires the adoption of a structured conceptual framework for guiding …

Effectiveness Of An Adapted Physical Activity Program On Anxiety, Depression, And Self-Esteem On A Heterogenous Sample: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Mathilde Plard, Claire El Jor, Rebecca Shankland, Quentin Hallez
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
In recent decades, numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of Adapted Physical Activity (APA) interventions in improving the mental health of individuals. However, a limitation of these studies is their predominant focus on homogeneous groups, characterized by similar diseases or disorders and characteristics. Thus, effects associated with these groups may largely account for the observed benefits, rather than the physical activity itself. This study aimed to investigate the impact of an eight-week APA intervention on anxiety, depression, and self-esteem in a heterogeneous group of participants with diverse health conditions and ages. Participants were randomly assigned to either an experimental group …

Defensive Publications Series
Current techniques to detect conversational failures during interaction between users and conversational artificial intelligence (AI) have many limitations - they capture only a tiny fraction of failures, lack context about the user's internal state during the conversation, and are not scalable. This disclosure describes techniques to automatically detect, classify, and log conversational failures in interactions between users and conversational AI agents to generate a rich, structured dataset. With user permission, conversations are analyzed to detect prosodic features and acoustic cues within context to determine likely occurrences of conversational failures. The conversational state is tracked using a state vector that encodes …

Faculty Research 2025
Excess body fat leads to an overabundance of adipose tissue macrophages (AT MΦs) with altered phenotypes that play pathogenic roles in obesity comorbidities including diabetes and cancer. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are leading targets to modulate AT MΦ phenotype. Here, we developed a dextran-based nanomedicine that delivers PPARα/γ agonists to AT MΦs and improves obesity and diabetic phenotypes in vivo. Within 1 week of treatment, AT MΦs decreased and became lipid laden, while extracellular vesicles secreted from AT decreased and reduced in lipid content. Within 2 weeks, glucose tolerance returned to levels of lean controls, followed by weight loss and …

Establishing Discriminative Control In Multioperant Settings, Stephanie A. Bonfonte
Doctoral Dissertations - College of Arts and Sciences
The development of functional communication is an important goal for individuals diagnosed with autism. It is common to begin with dense schedules of reinforcement when establishing mands, however schedule thinning is important for meaningful treatment outcomes. Although multiple schedules can be used to bring behavior under discriminative control and avoid high rates of manding when a reinforcer is unavailable, it is important to extend research to multioperant environments in which several reinforcers may be available simultaneously or at different times. We evaluated a method for establishing discriminative control over multiple distinct mands. Our findings demonstrated discriminative control over several mand …
