Elevating Nursing Leadership: How Nurse Managers Empower Unit Practice Councils, Katie Fields
Elevating Nursing Leadership: How Nurse Managers Empower Unit Practice Councils, Katie Fields
EBP Fellowship
Problem: Unit Practice Councils (UPCs) are foundational to Nursing Professional Governance (NPG), a structure that is designed to foster autonomy, accountability and authority for nurses. These councils are vital for empowering nurses to engage in decision-making and implementing practice changes. At one large pediatric hospital, UPC effectiveness varied across units, largely due to differences in nurse manager engagement and support. This variation highlighted a critical gap in how nurse managers were supporting UPCs within their unit. To close this gap, it was important to identify leadership best practices and behaviors that lead to successful UPCs. The following PICOT question …

Exploring Barriers To Patient Care In A South Carolina Free Clinic, Jonathan G. Green
Exploring Barriers To Patient Care In A South Carolina Free Clinic, Jonathan G. Green
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Access to healthcare remains a persistent challenge for medically underserved populations who rely on free medical clinics for primary care services, particularly in non-Medicaid expansion states such as South Carolina. Free clinics serve as critical safety-net providers, yet patients frequently encounter barriers that limit access, continuity, and quality of care. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to explore and identify the structural, social, and interprofessional barriers to patient care within a South Carolina free medical clinic to inform targeted, evidence-based interventions. A mixed-methods needs assessment design was used, combining a retrospective chart review of forty …

Empowering Mothers: A Digital Intervention For Perinatal Mental Wellness, Morgan Edmunds
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Aim: The aim of this project was to develop a smartphone application prototype for peripartum mental health. The goal of this application was to enhance access to education and quality mental health care.
Background: Currently, in the United States, peripartum mental health conditions are the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality (The Joint Commission, 2023). There is a gap in education, screening, and treatment for peripartum mental health due to distrust and a lack of resources, including a lack of mental health providers (Dossette et al., 2024; Feldman & Perret, 2023). Therefore, there is a significant number of women …

Religious Conflicts In Disguise: The Limits Of The Law In Tackling Conflicts With Religious Dimensions, Yael Efron
Religious Conflicts In Disguise: The Limits Of The Law In Tackling Conflicts With Religious Dimensions, Yael Efron
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
In previous publications, we have established the crucial differences between conflicts with religious dimensions (CRDs) and other types of conflicts. We claim that a legal solution to CRDs is rarely sufficient to terminate the conflict and often might lead to further damage to communities and persons, sometimes even harsher than the original dispute. Since not all CRDs are similar, a theorized model of their distinguishing elements—time, intensity, and proximity to core values—assists us in differentiating them. By analyzing the elements of CRDs in accordance with the TIV model, we can more easily determine which conflicts are suitable for legal process …
Dispute Resolution Tradeoffs In Ombuds Office Design, Kristen M. Blankley
Dispute Resolution Tradeoffs In Ombuds Office Design, Kristen M. Blankley
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
An organizational ombudsman (or “ombuds,” used as the preferred term in this paper) is a conflict resolution specialist who works as either an employee or contractor within the organization it serves. Unlike mediators or arbitrators, ombuds work only with a designated constituency group (often employees or other stakeholders) to solve a variety of conflicts at the lowest level possible within the organization. Ombuds, while preserving the confidentiality of the information they learn, can report trends to the organization or the public. While ombuds do not have the authority to make formal policy changes or other formal decisions, their work informs …
Pursuing Restorative Justice For The Legacy Of Federal Indian Boarding Schools, Jilly Horowitz
Pursuing Restorative Justice For The Legacy Of Federal Indian Boarding Schools, Jilly Horowitz
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
This Note examines the United States’ federal boarding school policy, designed to eliminate Native populations, and the federal government’s efforts from June 2021 to December 2024 to acknowledge and address its harms. For 150 years, Native children were subjected to this brutal policy and were removed from their communities and placed in boarding schools. These schools were focused less on providing education and opportunity for Native students, and instead were tools to carry out a concentrated federal policy of cultural assimilation and forcible removal from Native lands. The federal government implemented this policy throughout the country, operating or funding 451 …

Blazing A New Path: How Regulatory Negotiation Can Resolve Cannabis Legalization’S Shortcomings, Natalie Pearson
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
New York’s ambitious cannabis legalization effort has fallen short of its promises, burdened by regulatory confusion, industry roadblocks, and an unchecked illicit market. Despite state-level approval, legalization remains riddled with contradictions and obstacles, leaving businesses and policymakers struggling to navigate an unstable framework. This Note explores how regulatory negotiation, an alternative dispute resolution (“ADR”) mechanism, can address key industry challenges, particularly those arising from conflicting federal and state laws.

Colfax, an overburdened community in central Louisiana, hosts the last commercially-operated open-burn/open-detonation (OB/OD) hazardous waste thermal treatment facility in the United States. Until December 2023 when their permit disallowed OB/OD, the facility processed military waste, fireworks, propellants, soils excavated from Superfund sites, and other hazardous materials. This community-engaged study measured ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5), environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and metals using two high-volume PM2.5 samplers deployed 1.2 mi and 9.0 mi from the facility from April, 2022 through February, 2023. Elevated PM2.5 concentrations were recorded at both sites during spring and summer 2022. …

Analysis Of The Prevalence Of Dissociative Identity Disorder Using Neutrosophic Plithogenic Statistics, Verónica Elizabeth Saltos Paz, Tanya Elizabeth Borja Pante, Gloria Madaly Plasencia Álvarez, Milena Rodríguez Salcedo
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is one of the most enigmatic, intricate issues of contemporary psychiatry. It is challenging to assess how prevalent it is and what diagnosis means because dissociative identity disorder is a complicated disorder that manifests differently across populations. Yet when the disorder can be analyzed with statistically significant results from solid populations, critical advances in disorder awareness, treatment, and quality of life for those with IDD exist. Yet the literature does not provide such a statistical approach that will process uncertainty and vagueness based upon clinical observation of persons with DID. Therefore, this research attempts to apply …

Interest In “Pumpkin Spice” Simmers Down In 2025, Social Media Analysis Finds, Jin-A Choi, Yi Lou, Bond Benton
College of Communication and Media Scholarship and Creative Works
The ingredients of pumpkin spice may only be a mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and cloves, however it has transcended the sum of its parts to become a cultural touchstone and important part of fall product branding for companies. Its ubiquity arguably began in 2003 with the introduction of “Pumpkin Spice Latte” at Starbucks (Nosowitz, 2022). From simple lattes to more absurd pumpkin spice offerings (including deodorant and bathroom tissue), the world has entered its second decade of pumpkin spice being top of mind at the arrival of autumn. 2025, however, presents potential challenges associated with trend continuation. Immediately …

Care As The Primary Motivation In Home Birthing Among Mothers In Panukulan, Quezon, Leslie A. Lopez, Marie Angelie Molina
Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC)
This qualitative study examines how women in Panukulan, Quezon, a GIDA municipality, make decisions regarding childbirth in light of national and municipal policies that promote institutional delivery and discourage home births. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior as an analytical framework, the study analyzes maternal intrapartum health-seeking behavior (HSB) through the following components: a) sociocultural and institutional context, b) intention formation based on attitudes toward facility and home birthing, perceptions of subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, and c) actual behavior. Findings reveal that while facility births are widely recognized for their clinical safety, women’s preferences for specific behaviors are …

Venezuelan Migrants In Prostitution: A Personal Decision?, Yazmin Maria Lucila Cadena Camargo, Izara Maite Mondragon Moreno, Isabela Osorio Jaramillo, Paula Angélica Suárez Álvarez, Andrés Duarte Osorio, Carlos Gómez-Restrepo
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
This paper explores the multifaceted experiences of Venezuelan migrant women engaged in prostitution, framed through three critical moments: the “decision to enter in prostitution,” the unique abuses faced, and the resultant consequences on mental, physical, and social health. The study highlights how socioeconomic vulnerabilities—exacerbated by migration and poverty—significantly influence the likelihood of entering prostitution. It also shows how traumatic experiences, particularly in childhood and adolescence, coupled with a lack of support networks, contribute to a heightened risk of exploitation. Eleven life stories were collected through a phenomenological approach, revealing a common narrative of abuse, poverty, and the search for survival …

Background and objectives: Cerebral white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) on MRI are part of the spectrum of age-related brain vascular injury and are associated with increased risk of stroke and dementia. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) conducted mostly in populations of European ancestry have identified several genetic loci. Although Hispanic/Latino adults have a greater burden of WMHs than their non-Hispanic White counterparts, they are vastly underrepresented in genetic studies. We sought to characterize the genetic architecture of WMHs in a Hispanic/Latino cohort by investigating the transferability of known WMH genetic loci and by leveraging Hispanic/Latino genetic diversity to map novel loci.
Methods: …
