The Economic Impact Of The Soda City Market In Columbia, Sc, Sarah E. Lillard Oct 2025

The Economic Impact Of The Soda City Market In Columbia, Sc, Sarah E. Lillard

Senior Theses

This study examines the role of Soda City Market in the economic and social revitalization of Columbia, South Carolina’s Main Street district. Since relocating downtown in 2012, the market has evolved from a small farmers market into a major cultural and entrepreneurial hub attracting more than 300,000 visitors annually. To evaluate its impact, the study integrates two primary methods: a vendor survey capturing business characteristics and an IMPLAN input–output model estimating the market’s economic effects within Richland County. Survey results from 25 vendors reveal a diverse and culturally representative business community in which Soda City serves as both an incubator …

Constitutional Dead Zones: Problematic Trends For Seizures Of Cell Phones Connected To The Recording Of Protests And Police Activity, Zachary R. Cormier Oct 2025

Constitutional Dead Zones: Problematic Trends For Seizures Of Cell Phones Connected To The Recording Of Protests And Police Activity, Zachary R. Cormier

Denver Law Review

Cell phones are free speech machines. They have been particularly important in recent social movements because they allow an individual to record protests or police activity and share such experiences with a world-wide audience on social media. In these circumstances, the Fourth Amendment’s protection of an individual’s unfettered property right to possess their cell phone overlaps with their First Amendment right to engage in these core free speech activities. Both rights are put to the test when there is conflict with police in connection with the recording. My survey of recent case law provides numerous examples where an individual’s cell …

"Fixing" The Classical Legal Tradition, Jamie G. Mcwilliam Oct 2025

"Fixing" The Classical Legal Tradition, Jamie G. Mcwilliam

Denver Law Review

A “moral turn” in jurisprudence—in which scholars and judges are making overt appeals to the classical legal tradition and its natural law principles—has been gaining steam. Originalism, with its focus on posited law, is increasingly viewed as a morally empty jurisprudence. But positive law is a necessary, though not sufficient, component of the classical tradition, providing the means for a society to advance the common good. With that in mind, this Article explains how certain core originalist theses provide a deeper understanding of the mechanics of how positive law fulfills its moral role. It, therefore, argues that these concepts should …

Management Of Recurrent Metastasis Of Renal Cell Carcinoma To The Parotid Gland After Nephrectomy., Kathryn Collins, Emily Cushing, Alex Ellerhorst, Christopher Selinsky Oct 2025

Management Of Recurrent Metastasis Of Renal Cell Carcinoma To The Parotid Gland After Nephrectomy., Kathryn Collins, Emily Cushing, Alex Ellerhorst, Christopher Selinsky

Oncology Articles

Renal cell carcinoma accounts for 90% of malignant renal tumors, with common metastases to the lungs, bones, and brain. Head and neck metastases are uncommon, and the parotid gland is an exceedingly rare site (0.5%). Recurrent metastasis to bilateral parotid glands has been reported in the literature, but recurrent metastasis to the ipsilateral gland has not. This is a case about a 69-year-old female who presented to our clinic with the chief complaint of a slowly enlarging left neck mass. She had a history of clear cell renal cell carcinoma treated with nephrectomy 15 years prior. An MRI reviewed from …

Carbon Markets: A New Opportunity For Farmers, Emma Wrede Oct 2025

Carbon Markets: A New Opportunity For Farmers, Emma Wrede

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

Farmers have always known that healthy soil is their greatest asset to their success. Carbon markets are simply finding a new way to identify, measure, and compensate that value in a new way. In a time where every dollar counts, carbon credit markets can strengthen farmers’ margins and enhance their land health which they depend on. With continued research, improved regulation, and clearer guidelines, this system will work for both farmers and the environment.

Nebraska's Hidden Goldmine: Wind Power On Farms, Adelaide Witte

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

Nebraska’s been hesitant to go all in on wind energy. People often worry about things like noise, how turbines look, or even potential impacts on human health. Community concerns are valid and should always be acknowledged. However, addressing them doesn’t require putting all development on hold.

“The Good Life” Of Ai, Lauren Smith

Op-Eds from ENSC230 Energy and the Environment: Economics and Policies

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is powered by data centers, sprawling warehouses of servers that require massive amounts of electricity and water to operate. The United Statesalready has more than 1,000 data centers, with nearly 400 more on the way.

Nebraska is next. Google is building a major new data center in North Lincoln, adding to the 18 operating across the state.

Our collective use of tools like ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot has fueled a boom in generative AI, and with it a surge in energy and water consumption.

The need for AI regulation isn’t a future concern. It’s …

Covid-19 Asian American Oral History Project: Reflecting On Identity And Oral History At A Community College, Thomas Cleary Oct 2025

Covid-19 Asian American Oral History Project: Reflecting On Identity And Oral History At A Community College, Thomas Cleary

Publications and Research

In this article, I share narrators’ stories from the Covid-19 Asian American Oral History Project based at LaGuardia Community College, CUNY, to illustrate how Covid-19 and increased anti-Asian hate during the pandemic shaped Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) identities in Queens, New York. Narrators’ stories shed light on how Black Lives Matter impacted their own understanding of race and racialization, particularly as AAPI identity and race relate to the Model Minority Myth. This project also laid the groundwork to develop a broader oral history culture at the college, developing faculty pedagogy to incorporate oral history interviews and interviewing into …

Trauma And Coparenting Stress In African American Mothers, Mikyaila Romey Oct 2025

Trauma And Coparenting Stress In African American Mothers, Mikyaila Romey

Distinguished Student Scholarship Collection

This study explores how childhood trauma impacts parenting stress and coparenting relationships among African American mothers, especially those in nontraditional coparenting arrangements. It focuses on how early experiences like neglect, abuse, household dysfunction, and bullying can influence the way mothers manage stress and interact with their coparent. Nine participants completed surveys that measured their childhood trauma experiences, current levels of parenting stress, and the quality of their coparenting relationships. The findings show a clear connection: mothers who experienced more trauma in childhood reported higher levels of stress as parents and more challenges with coparenting, including poor communication, lack of emotional …

Psi Pneumonia Project, Susan Moore Oct 2025

Psi Pneumonia Project, Susan Moore

Distinguished Student Scholarship Collection

This project investigates the use of the Pneumonia Severity Index (PSI) in conjunction with administrative claims data to improve the identification of inappropriate principal diagnoses for inpatient claims classified as DRG 193 (Simple Pneumonia & Pleurisy with MCC). By mapping PSI clinical factors to UB-04 claim form elements and ICD-10-CM codes, a predictive model was developed and tested on 2,038 claims. The model demonstrated a 46% accuracy rate in identifying claims with audit findings, suggesting that integrating clinical decision tools like PSI can enhance audit efficiency and reduce unnecessary claim reviews. Limitations include reliance on proxy data and restricted access …

Texas S.B. 8 V. Rights: Restoring Judicial Power With The State Action Remedy, Kobi J. Grossman Oct 2025

Texas S.B. 8 V. Rights: Restoring Judicial Power With The State Action Remedy, Kobi J. Grossman

Undergraduate Honors Theses

While the constitutional right to an abortion was the law of the land in the U.S., Texas sought to restrict that right in line with their political agenda by passing S.B. 8 (2021), referred to as the “Texas Heartbeat Act”. This statute made access to abortions illegal past six weeks, or once a heartbeat is detected. The enforcement structure created in the law did not look to the state to exercise its role as the executor of the public good, but rather, to private citizens in creating a right of action for individuals to sue anyone who “aids or abets” …

The Jurisprudence Of Constitutional Entitlement, David Schraub Oct 2025

The Jurisprudence Of Constitutional Entitlement, David Schraub

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Lawyers are accustomed to thinking of constitutional law as a familiar binary: Either a given governmental policy or practice is constitutional and therefore permitted, or unconstitutional and forbidden. But not all constitutional laws are created equal. A state practice which may be constitutional in concept (such as the death penalty) may, in some or many applications, violate specific constitutional rules and become impermissible. When a policy which has been affirmed to be constitutional in general repeatedly runs up against problems as-applied, a legal tension emerges: can the state implement the policy or not? This dilemma illuminates a third constitutional category: …

The 10-Year Functional Outcome Of Ponseti Treatment Of Idiopathic And Arthrogrypotic Clubfeet With An Age-Matched Control, Chris Church, Nicole Wang, Stephanie Butler, Jose J Salazar-Torres, John Henley, Freeman Miller, Nancy Carlin, Maureen Donohoe, L Reid Nichols

Faculty and Staff Publications

Background: The Ponseti method is accepted as an effective primary conservative treatment for idiopathic clubfoot (IC) using serial casting, percutaneous Achilles tenotomy, and prolonged bracing. The outcomes of its use in treating rigid clubfoot in arthrogryposis are unclear. This study assesses the outcomes of the Ponseti method in children with IC and arthrogrypotic clubfoot at an average age of 10 years.

Methods: Outcomes of the Ponseti method were retrospectively studied in ambulatory children ages 8.0 to 12.9 years in the gait lab between 2004 and 2024. Children were excluded due to the presence of nonidiopathic or nonarthrogryposis-related clubfoot and history …

Monitoring The Laboratory Frequency For Musculoskeletal Infections At A Tertiary Care Children's Hospital: A Diagnostic Stewardship Qi Project, Kedar Tilak, Douglas Swanson, Christine Symes, Alaina N. Burns, Ann L. Wirtz, Rana El Feghaly

Posters

Patients with musculoskeletal infections (MSKI) undergo several laboratory tests. To promote laboratory stewardship, our Infectious diseases (ID) division recommended the following frequencies for labs: 1) C-reactive protein (CRP) every 2-3 days until >50% reduction while >3mg/dL, otherwise weekly until normal, 2) Sedimentation rate (ESR) at the start of therapy and end if > 20mm/hr initially, 3) Complete blood cell count (CBC) at the start of therapy and when transitioning to oral therapy if WBC is initially elevated. Baseline data showed that of 42 children evaluated between July 2023-May 2024, only 15 (35.7%) had a CBC and 13 (30.95%) had a CRP …

Faculty Publications

Background

Systemic low-grade inflammation, which is characterized by increased counts of blood leukocytes (white blood cells, WBCs), can lead to hypertension, while reduced WBC counts caused by the use of some substances, e.g., alcohol, can also lead to hypertension. However, there have been no studies on the association between WBC counts and the risk of hypertension in young adults.

Methods

This cohort study conducted in Taiwan included a total of 2351 military personnel who were aged 18–39 years, were free of baseline hypertension and were followed up for incident hypertension from 2014 to the end of 2020. Resting blood pressure …

How Do Working Conditions Effect Teacher Job Satisfaction And Intention To Stay: Retaining Special Education Teachers, Alyssa Michelle Raygoza Oct 2025

How Do Working Conditions Effect Teacher Job Satisfaction And Intention To Stay: Retaining Special Education Teachers, Alyssa Michelle Raygoza

Theses and Dissertations

Teacher retention remains a leading area of focus in the United States. Recent research efforts have examined the effects of specific work-related experiences on teacher retention. In comparison to teaching in a general education classroom, special education teachers often face increased levels of job demands that can influence the ways in which existing resources may or may not balance out such challenges. The study is grounded in the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) Model, a theoretical framework that has been used widely in both occupational and, more recently, educational research focusing on the specific demands and resources situated within teacher working conditions. …
