Individuals’ Experiences Of Care Partner Involvement In Heart Disease Management: A Pilot Study, Elizabeth Richards
Individuals’ Experiences Of Care Partner Involvement In Heart Disease Management: A Pilot Study, Elizabeth Richards
School of Nursing Faculty Publications
Introduction: Heart disease impacts both those diagnosed and their families, often due to lifestyle modifications that can alter family dynamics. While existing literature focuses on men and married individuals, understanding care partner involvement for both men and women independent of marital status is important, given gender disparities in heart disease experiences, caregiving roles, and widowhood rates. We explored differences in characteristics of men and women with heart disease, with and without a care partner. Additionally, we explored involvement of care partner beyond spousal relationships. We further examined gender differences in these experiences. Method: Cross-sectional Prolific survey pilot data of persons …

Designing Invisibility: How Hostile Architecture Impacts People Living With Disabilities, Priscilla A. Okolie
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
This comment discusses the potentially unethical and unlawful nature of hostile architecture. This comment posits that hostile architecture is inherently illegal by way of implicitly and overtly violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. This comment argues that hostile architecture violates the ADA because it potentially discriminates against people living with disabilities by hindering their ability to utilize both public and private facilities such as bus stops. This comment acknowledges that while hostile architecture is often used as a tool to discourage unhoused people from using such facilities, hostile architecture also potentially discriminates against people living with disabilities. This comment highlights …
Tinkering With The Machinery Of Death: Execution Through Nitrogen Hypoxia, Emiliano Villarreal
Tinkering With The Machinery Of Death: Execution Through Nitrogen Hypoxia, Emiliano Villarreal
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
The modern era of the death penalty in the United States began in 1976 when the Supreme Court reinstituted the death penalty just four years after having found it to be unconstitutional. Since then, various states, as well as the federal government, have experimented with different methods of execution to find the most “humane” way of carrying out an execution. In 2018, Alabama legalized the use of nitrogen hypoxia as a method of execution, and in 2024, became the first state to execute a person with this new, previously untested method. However, the use of nitrogen hypoxia has been the …

Beyond Racial Categorization In Sports Cardiology: A Systematic Review Of Cardiac Adaptations In Athletes, Douglas Corsi, Rafael Hernandez, Jasmine Yimeng Bao, Stephen Garrova, David Shipon
Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers
Background/Objectives: Race-based cardiac screening criteria in sports cardiology, including the “Black athlete’s heart” concept, assume biological distinctions that may not reflect physiological reality. This systematic review evaluates whether geographic ancestry provides more clinically relevant predictors of cardiac adaptation than racial categorization. Methods: PubMed was searched (January 2005–July 2025) for studies examining cardiac adaptations in athletes by ethnicity. Data extraction captured demographics, geographic origin, cardiac assessments, and outcomes. Narrative synthesis was employed due to methodological heterogeneity. Results: Forty-seven studies (n = 66,130) revealed substantial within-race heterogeneity. The “Black athlete repolarization variant” prevalence ranged from 1.8% (Brazilian) to 30% (Ghanaian) Black athletes. …

Effective Marketing Strategies Business Leaders Use To Remain Profitable And Sustainable Beyond 5 Years In The Digital Age, Lauren Taylor Sawyer
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A lack of effective marketing strategies to stay profitable in the digital age is a concern for small and medium-sized business leaders because it can lead to early business failure, lost revenue, and reduced long-term sustainability. Grounded in relationship management theory and Kotter’s (1996) 8-step change model, this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was conducted to explore effective marketing strategies business leaders use to remain profitable and sustainable beyond 5 years in the digital age. Participants were six business leaders located in the Southeastern United States who had successfully sustained their companies for over 5 years and were directly responsible for marketing …

Strategies To Prevent Employee Turnover And Revenue Losses Resulting From Workplace Bullying, Sylvester Doby Jr
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Workplace bullying is a serious issue that can lead to high employee turnover and significant revenue loss. To maintain a healthy work environment and support their employees, business leaders need to develop and implement effective strategies to prevent bullying. Grounded in the transformational leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry study was to identify and explore the successful strategies that U.S. business leaders used to prevent workplace bullying. Six business leaders who have successfully implemented strategies to combat workplace bullying were purposively recruited and interviewed using semistructured interviews. The problem that was addressed through this study is that the experiences of early childhood professionals (ECPs) working with children with selective mutism are unknown. Grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of child development, the purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore the experiences of ECPs working with children with selective mutism. Data were collected through semistructured interviews with 12 ECPs who support children with selective mutism in several districts in southern California. Through open coding, the following themes emerged: ECPs noted (a) limited knowledge about selective mutism; (b) supporting children who have selective mutism is both enjoyable and …
Evaluating The Potential And Limitations Of Nanopore Adaptive Sampling For Targeted Transcriptome Sequencing, Nicole Debruyne, Feng Wang, Yang Xu, Lan Lin
Evaluating The Potential And Limitations Of Nanopore Adaptive Sampling For Targeted Transcriptome Sequencing, Nicole Debruyne, Feng Wang, Yang Xu, Lan Lin
Department of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Cancer Biology Faculty Papers
Long-read RNA sequencing is a powerful technology for transcriptomics, but low throughput and high cost pose challenges. Adaptive sampling, a feature of Oxford Nanopore Technologies, offers real-time enrichment by selectively ejecting non-target molecules. We evaluate adaptive sampling for human transcriptome analysis. Adaptive sampling modestly enriches target transcripts (1.3 × for cDNA sequencing, 1.9 × for direct RNA sequencing) while preserving gene expression and splicing profiles, but is significantly less effective than cDNA hybridization capture. Short read lengths and low sequencing quality limit performance. Adaptive sampling on direct RNA sequencing can boost target yield (~ 20%) within fixed run times, potentially …

Insights Into Cardiac O-Glcnacylation As A Link Between The Diabetic State And Increased Cardiovascular Disease Susceptibility And Pathology, Samuel Formosa Chang
All ETDs from UAB
With diabetes prevalence around the world nearing 10%, and half of the US population having either diabetes or pre-diabetes, many epidemiological studies show diabetic patients have both increased risk for developing major cardiovascular disease (CVD), and increased mortality rates due to CVD. Additionally, within this field, studies have shown that indi-viduals with previously higher HbA1C levels have higher long-lasting risk for major ad-verse cardiac events compared to those with previously lower HbA1C levels—establishing the concept of “metabolic memory”. Within the diabetic milieu, cardiac protein O-GlcNAcylation (O-linked B-N-acetyl-glucosamine) is important for cardiac pathology de-velopment. Specifically, our lab generated a cardiomyocyte specific, …
