Above The Law? Exploring Satellite Surveillance Under The Illinois Bill Of Rights, Maxwell A. Ruttenberg
Northern Illinois University Law Review
Since the Soviet Union’s launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite in 1957, our atmosphere has seen a boom in the number of satellites in orbit. Today, it is estimated that there are between five and ten thousand satellites in orbit, most of them owned by private corporations. Our skies will continue to be filled in the coming years as current players increase their satellite fleets, new players arise in the aerospace industry, and nations continue their focus on the uses of space exploration and technology. With the increase of satellites above, communities must now be on alert to an invasion …

Loneliness is a growing global concern, with nearly one in four adults reporting feeling very or somewhat lonely in 2023 (Maese, 2023). The U.S. Surgeon General equates its health risks to smoking 15 cigarettes daily, with young adults aged 18–24 reporting the highest loneliness rates (79%) in the U.S. (Morning Consult, 2021). The Healthy Minds National Report for 2023-2024 states 44% of college students feel left out some of the time and 23% feel left out often. Similarly, 40% of college students report a lack of companionship some of the time and 21% report a lack of companionship often. The …

As most dog owners will tell you, there is something special about interacting with a dog. They seem to know when we need them, whether it’s because we’re stressed, sad, or simply need an emotional boost. The rise of private individuals and professional agencies offering canine-specific animal-assisted interventions attests to these unique dog qualities. One such provider is the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, which administers the Plymouth County Comfort Dogs Program (PCCDP), a network of handler-dog teams.

Many students, whether in elementary or college classrooms, face overlapping challenges related to disability, trauma, poverty, and systemic inequity, and many teachers feel unprepared to provide meaningful support. A ninth-grade Boston charter area teacher once confided to me, “I am aware that my students require assistance, yet I am at a loss as to how to effectively teach them, particularly in regard to students from diverse backgrounds.” This teacher’s statement was not unusual. In my social work roles in several schools, I observed students’ needs and teachers’ uncertainties about how to meet them, which led to my own dedication to …

Shining A Light On Firms’ Political Connections: The Role Of Dark Money, Matthew Denes, Madeline Scanlon
Shining A Light On Firms’ Political Connections: The Role Of Dark Money, Matthew Denes, Madeline Scanlon
Faculty Publications
We study the emergence of a new channel for firms’ political activity using dark money through undisclosed and unlimited contributions. After the U.S. federal court decisions in 2010, S&P 500 firms substantially increased their use of dark money. We find that dark money contributions complement political engagement through campaign contributions and lobbying. Firms disclose dark money contributions when they face heightened nondisclosure costs. Firms contributing to dark money groups benefit by receiving more procurement contracts and increased government subsidies. Our findings highlight that political connections by firms are evolving and expanding through new and largely unexplored channels. (JEL D72, …
Graphic Design For Visual Narratives: The Semiotics Of Diegetic Retrofuturism, Brooke Luke Ballard
Graphic Design For Visual Narratives: The Semiotics Of Diegetic Retrofuturism, Brooke Luke Ballard
Theses
While semiotics, diegesis, and retrofuturism have all been discussed at length in academia, it is uncommon to find the synthesis of all three. When these concepts are combined, it forms what I argue is a new genre of graphic design now prevalent enough in contemporary media to warrant definition and analysis. This thesis first explores the theories of visual semiotics, narrative diegesis, and retrofuturistic aesthetics individually before uniting them as a new design genre. Several candidates for this design classification will then be examined in case studies that meet the criteria of 1) containing a visual language that a modern …

Exploratory Analysis Of Prerequisites To Teaching Early Perspective Taking In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Zoe Painter
Honors College Theses
The purpose of the current study was to determine the effectiveness of a behavioral intervention package for improving perspective-taking skills in children with ASD and specifically extend previous research focused on teaching the ability to identify what others are experiencing through their senses. Less complex verbal behaviors hypothesized to be prerequisites to this skill were first assessed systematically in three male children with ASD receiving ABA services in a community-based clinic, and then participants were taught to predict behavior according to the sensory experiences of others (e.g. after observing that a man sees a fly in his drink, responding the …

The Effects Of Head Injury On Executive Function And Emotion Regulation In Male And Female Athletes, Anna Christine Speer
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Head injuries are a common occurrence among athletes, and research on concussions has seen significant rise alongside an increasing awareness of their symptoms and effects. Women’s involvement in sports has also rapidly increased in recent decades. However, a significant gap in research exists as to how the effects of head injuries may differ across sexes, particularly regarding executive function and emotion regulation. This study aimed to bridge this gap in research by investigating how the frequency of head injuries in both female and male athletes impact executive functioning and emotion regulation among current and former athletes. Current and former athletes …

Advancing Transportation Decarbonization Through Electrification: Insights From Transit And Rideshare Scenarios, Ajay Ghimire
Theses (2016-Present)
The transportation sector remains a major source of criteria pollutants globally, with passenger vehicles contributing significantly to energy demand. While electric vehicles (EVs) offer a promising path toward energy efficiency, few studies have evaluated their impact at the metropolitan scale using integrated, high-fidelity modeling frameworks. This study investigates the energy implications of rideshare electrification in the Houston metropolitan area using a multi-stage simulation workflow. Travel demand is modeled using POLARIS, an agent-based, activity-based framework; vehicle trajectories are translated into second-by-second speed profiles using SVTrip; and energy consumption and criteria pollutant emissions are estimated using the Autonomie vehicle simulation platform. From ancient Black gods to field women who conjured and worked the land. Ancestral griots to church mothers, magicikal practitioners, spell workers, healers, and supernatural rebels. From evil Black witches persecuted and lynched, to dark-skinned devotees, these powerful femmes emerge from centuries of Black metaphysical labor. They are the women we know, may have been raised by, deeply love, yet often fail to acknowledge. Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare, inherited monogenic disorder that is typically caused by variants in the tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (ALPL) gene. Genetic testing for ALPL variant(s) to confirm the diagnosis in patients with suspected HPP is a standard practice based on availability. This review attempts to improve the current understanding of the genetics of HPP as it addresses five key related topics: (1) HPP patterns of inheritance and the relationship between HPP genotype and phenotype, (2) how the disease can manifest (including specific genotypes) in heterozygotes, (3) potential reasons why some patients have persistently low alkaline phosphatase activity yet lack …

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a common spinal deformity. Previous studies have demonstrated that healthcare disparities affect the initial presentation of AIS patients. However, studies have utilized various socioeconomic status (SES) indices with no previous study assessing the congruency of these indices.
METHODS: A single-center, retrospective review of adolescent patients presenting for initial evaluation of scoliosis was performed at a tertiary care pediatric hospital based in the central United States. Patient demographic data were recorded in addition to radiographic data consisting of coronal curve magnitude at presentation and skeletal maturity indices. Socioeconomic variables were collected, including geographic area of …

Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is increasingly recognized as essential for improving neural and cognitive function, especially in older age. Here, we examined a cross-sectional sample of the Human Connectome Project (HCP) Aging dataset (ages 36–100; N = 378) to test the hypothesis that functional connectivity profiles that are related to CRF are also associated with episodic memory and executive function across middle age and older adults. To test these hypotheses, we first used connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM) to identify functional connections (FCs) that were separately predictive of CRF (2 Minute Walk Test), episodic memory (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test), and executive …

Evinacumab, an angiopoietin-like 3 inhibitor, significantly reduces low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). Herein, we report pharmacokinetic and efficacy analyses of evinacumab in < 5-year-old patients with HoFH. Population pharmacometric models characterizing evinacumab exposure and LDL-C response accounting for lipoprotein apheresis effect in ≥ 5-year-old patients were adapted for growth and maturation to predict and compare evinacumab and LDL-C concentrations across age/weight groups in virtual ≥ 6-month-old patients receiving 15 mg/kg evinacumab intravenous (iv) infusions every 4 weeks (q4w). As expected from allometric theory, weight-based dosing resulted in decreasing evinacumab exposures with declining body weight. Consistent with trends observed in > 5-year-old patients, the predicted percent change from LDL-C baseline (%∆LDL-C) was generally comparable or even higher in < 5-year-old patients (63.0%-68.5%) than in 5- to < 18-year-old patients (61.3%-67.8%) or adults (51.7%), with the predicted percentages of patients achieving %∆LDL-C > 50% also higher in < 5-year-old patients (82.0%-86.9%) versus 5- to < 18-year-old patients (72.0%-84.5%) and adults (54.8%). Through a managed access program, six 1- to < 5-year-old patients received between 5 and 23 iv infusions of 15 mg/kg evinacumab q4w. Rapid and clinically meaningful LDL-C reductions were observed, with %∆LDL-C at the last reported dose ranging from 41.3% to 77.3%. Based on the actual patient dosing and plasmapheresis history, model-predicted evinacumab and LDL-C concentrations were comparable to the observed data collected in the managed access program. Overall, this analysis provides evidence for the use of evinacumab 15 mg/kg iv q4w dosing regimen in 6-month-old to 5-year-old patients.

Acetaminophen (APAP) overdose can cause liver injury and is the leading cause of acute liver failure in Western countries. Hepatocellular necrosis induced by APAP involves the formation of a reactive metabolite, triggering mitochondrial oxidant stress and peroxynitrite formation. Iron-catalyzed protein nitration is critical for mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death in the absence of lipid peroxidation (LPO). However, co-treatment of APAP and ferrous sulfate aggravated protein nitration and liver injury but also triggered extensive LPO (measured as malondialdehyde and hydroxy eicosatetraenoic acid (HETE) species). The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the aggravated injury under these conditions is caused …

Guidelines for the definitive surgical management of pediatric femoral shaft fractures have recently been established. Initial preoperative immobilization of these patients varies by age and size; limited guidelines exist to guide caregivers in appropriate preoperative care. Here, we present our recommendations based on clinical experience and literature review. We prefer temporary splints for patients younger than 5 years and Bucks boot traction for skeletally immature patients older than 5 years. In small patients, the splint should extend past the iliac crest and down to the foot to ensure proper immobilization of the femur fracture. For Bucks boot traction, proper traction …

Lead and pesticide exposure are leading environmental health concerns for children, and these exposures can result in long-term health consequences, including irreversible cognitive delay and endocrine dysfunction. A pilot program aimed to a) develop and disseminate educational materials and supplies and b) perform in-home childcare facility assessments to increase knowledge regarding lead and pesticide safety, provide education on the health impacts of elevated blood lead levels, and reduce exposure risks in these settings. The program was implemented in St. Louis, Missouri. From outreach and education efforts to interactive feedback, this article shares important lessons learned and highlights educational gaps that …

Introduction Prediabetes presents an opportunity for early intervention. Growing evidence suggests that psychological stress may contribute to glucose dysregulation, but the findings are inconsistent. This study aimed to clarify the association between perceived stress and glycemic measures, by first testing gender as a moderator, and then examining age as a moderator within each gender group. Research design and methods We analyzed cross-sectional data from 470 diabetes-free adults in Singapore. Participants completed the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale, comprising two subscales: perceived helplessness and perceived self-efficacy. Glycemic measures included fasting plasma glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and 2-hour plasma glucose (2h-PG) following an oral …

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the role of metabolic flexibility in determining perioperative outcomes. Metabolic flexibility, a key feature of metabolic health, is the ability to efficiently switch between different fuel sources (predominantly carbohydrates and fats) depending on energy demands and availability. Given the rapidly changing physiological conditions in the perioperative period, we hypothesized that good metabolic adaptability could mitigate postoperative complications. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study utilizing a prospectively collected, single-center preoperative cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) database of patients undergoing a range of major surgeries between 2012 and 2022. On day 3, patients were categorized into 3 groups …
