Posttraumatic Growth Following Pregnancy Loss: Understanding The Influence Of Positive Religious Coping And The Moderating Effect Of Perceived Social Support, Maria Alayza

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The purpose of this research study was to examine positive religious coping, perceived social support, and posttraumatic growth (PTG) among bereaved mothers who had experienced pregnancy loss. I aimed to inform counselors about the nuances of the aftermath of pregnancy loss, as well as the protective and risk factors of PTG. The final sample consisted of 154 bereaved mothers who thoroughly completed a demographic questionnaire, the Positive Religious Coping subscale of the Brief Religious Coping Scale (Brief R-COPE), the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory–Expanded (PTGI-X), and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). I utilized the IBM Statistical Package for the …

Exploring Di College Coaches’ Perceptions Of Holistic Coaching And The Factors Impacting Their Ability To Succeed In The Current College Sports Landscape, Deborah V. Hogan Phd

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

In the highly competitive Division I (DI) college sports system, coaches are expected to produce winning programs while developing their college athletes holistically. Recent changes in NCAA policies complicate the coach-athlete relationship, hindering coaches' ability to serve as effective holistic leaders. This study uses grounded theory to understand how DI coaches in high-profile sports perceive their roles as holistic leaders and manage external challenges to provide holistic college athlete experiences. Semi-structured interviews with 12 football and women’s basketball coaches revealed five main themes: 1) coaches are educators, 2) strategies for holistic coaching, 3) supporting Black college athletes, 4) college sports …

Ncaa Division I Senior Athletic Administrators' Perceptions Of And Experiences With Mental Performance Consultants And Their Services: A Qualitative Investigation, Morgan R. Eckenrod, Rebecca Zakrajsek, Johannes Raabe

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

At the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (DI) level, senior athletic administrators (SAAs) play a critical role in hiring Mental Performance Consultants (MPCs). Researchers found that NCAA DI administrators generally believe MPCs are beneficial in helping student-athletes manage competition pressures and improve performance, the number of full-time MPCs in NCAA DI athletic departments is still limited. In this study, eleven NCAA DI SAAs with at least one full-time MPC in their athletic department that solely delivered mental performance services were interviewed about their perceptions of and experiences with MPCs and their services. Using reflexive thematic analysis procedures, three …

Supporting The College Athlete Amidst The Onset Of Name, Image, And Likeness, Brennan K. Berg, Michael Hutchinson, Janelle E. Wells, David W. Walsh, Andre Simmond

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

Athletic administrators often assume a distinct stakeholder role that has the most immediate and frequent impact on college athletes’ well-being and retention. The implementation of name, image, and likeness (NIL) represents a historic transformation in college athletics. Utilizing a sport development framework, particularly the retention stage, to examine elite athlete development, how athletic administrators socially support college athletes in the new context of NIL and its impact on administrators’ work experiences were empirically assessed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 athletic administrators at nine universities. The themes of Implementation Challenges, Lack of Uniformity, Holistic Benefits to Athlete Well-Being, and Mostly …

Analysis Of Careers In And Through Intercollegiate Compliance, Michael A. Odio, Grace Wright, Thomas J. Aicher

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

This study examines job movements entering, exiting, and between NCAA compliance-related positions using a sample of 100 LinkedIn profiles. The analysis of the 441 job movements establishes job and organizational tenure figures and patterns in how people matriculate through certain positions. Theory related to career boundaries is used to interpret the job movements and draw conclusions about patterns related to educational backgrounds (e.g., master’s and law degrees), the role of internships and graduate assistantships, and more. The findings provide new insight on career dynamics in NCAA compliance and underscore the need to focus on studying subsectors in college sport to …

Exploring Sport Leaders’ Sensemaking And Enactment Of Inclusive Leadership, Elizabeth Taylor, Sean Dahlin, Janelle Wells, Erika Gray Nov 2025

Exploring Sport Leaders’ Sensemaking And Enactment Of Inclusive Leadership, Elizabeth Taylor, Sean Dahlin, Janelle Wells, Erika Gray

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

While diversity, inclusion, and leadership shape individual behaviors and organizational culture, historically they have been researched as independent theoretical streams. Examining these lines has been fruitful to advance our understanding of diversity, inclusion, and leadership separately; however, we lack an understanding of how leaders understand and engage in inclusive leadership. Thus, this study explores how college sport leaders make sense of and enact inclusive leadership. Through 16 semi-structured interviews with senior-level athletic administrators we constructed four themes: fostering employees’ uniqueness, strengthening team belongingness, learning centered development, and actioning values-based care. This work both bolsters and extends Korkmaz and colleagues’ (2022) …

House Rules: Athlete, Coach, And Staff Perspectives On The Shifting Ncaa Landscape, Daniel Springer Nov 2025

House Rules: Athlete, Coach, And Staff Perspectives On The Shifting Ncaa Landscape, Daniel Springer

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

The House settlement is an inflection point in NCAA Division I athletics, ushering in a new model of institutional revenue sharing, roster regulation, and athlete compensation. While legal and financial analyses dominate public discourse, less is known about how these shifts are understood by those working and competing within athletic departments. This study draws on narrative analysis of interviews with 11 athletes, coaches, and staff across five anonymized Power 4 institutions to examine how the House settlement is being interpreted as it takes effect. Three narrative foci emerged: 1) financial prioritization and resource allocation, 2) shifting culture, relationships, and meaning, …

The Impact Of Geographic And Community Diversity On The Transitionary Experiences Of International College Athletes, Marek Taškár, Chris Corr, Nicole Sellars, Sarah Stokowski, Karina Jolly, Trevor Bopp Nov 2025

The Impact Of Geographic And Community Diversity On The Transitionary Experiences Of International College Athletes, Marek Taškár, Chris Corr, Nicole Sellars, Sarah Stokowski, Karina Jolly, Trevor Bopp

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics

International college athletes migrating to the United States for athletic competition encounter unique challenges such as language barriers, cultural adjustment, and familial detachment. These obstacles can hinder international college athletes’ transition compared to those of domestic athletes. While supportive programming and personnel have been illustrated to ease the transition and foster acculturation among international college athletes, the impact of the geographic location of an institution may impact the acculturation process for international college athletes. Given the importance of acculturation to athletic and academic success, this study examined how cultural diversity within communities hosting NCAA member institutions affects international college athletes’ …

Emergency Medicine Faculty Posters and Presentations

Background: Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in adults over age 65 (CDC, 2024). Traditional exercise-based interventions may have an impact on fall prevention (US Preventive Services Task Force et al., 2024). Providing these programs is resource-intensive, however mHealth applications may expand comprehensive fall prevention. We seek to know if there are differences in the interactions with mHealth in adults ages 65-89 in the Medical Faculty Associates (MFA) population and if these differences are related to social determinants of health (SDOH).

Methods: IRB waiver was obtained for human subjects research. We accessed data from years 2019-2024 in Epic …

Background: Peer influence is central to adolescent smoking initiation, yet its impact varies depending on individual and contextual factors. Understanding which moderators (personality, contextual, cultural, and environmental traits) shape these processes can inform more effective prevention strategies. We investigated hypothesized moderators of peer influence for adolescent smoking/vaping norms and other smoking-related outcomes in high and low-middle-income countries (LMICs): Northern Ireland and Bogotá.

Methods: Across 12 schools (n = 1,344, age 12–13 years), participants completed novel behavioral economics experiments measuring social norms, and self-report surveys, before and after school-based prevention interventions (ASSIST and Dead Cool). We examined how peer influence …

Subverting The System: Reducing Sex Offender Recidivism And Aiding Reentry Through The Use Of Specialty Courts, Jaymes Fairfax-Columbo, Emma Hamilton, Chelsea Jackson, Lia Knox-Hershey, David Dematteo Nov 2025

Subverting The System: Reducing Sex Offender Recidivism And Aiding Reentry Through The Use Of Specialty Courts, Jaymes Fairfax-Columbo, Emma Hamilton, Chelsea Jackson, Lia Knox-Hershey, David Dematteo

Texas A&M Law Review

Sex offender policy in the United States is predicated on accomplishing risk reduction and increasing public safety via punishment and incapacitation. Theoretically, accomplishing these goals should lessen the risk that sex offenders pose to society. However, an accumulated research base suggests that sex offender policies are ineffective in that they do not reduce recidivism rates, do not diminish children’s risk of sexual predation, and produce numerous detrimental collateral consequences. Further, current sex offender policies may actively undermine risk reduction by placing factors known to reduce risk level, such as stable housing, employment, and social support, out of the reach of …

Major Rules In The Courts: An Empirical Study Of Challenges To Federal Agencies’ Major Rules, Libby Dimenstein, Donald L. R. Goodson, Tyler Szeto

Texas A&M Law Review

Since at least the 1990s, presidents have seen the administrative state as a key tool, if not the primary one, for achieving policy objectives. At the same time, the administrative state has faced growing scrutiny, particularly from members of the Supreme Court. Given these dynamics, do some administrations’ regulatory actions fare better in court than others? Are there any trends we can see over time? These are some of the questions we sought to answer in the first empirical study of how major rules, as defined under the Congressional Review Act (“CRA”), fare in federal court. We chose major rules …

A Reemployment Right For People In Pretrial Detention, Jordan Laris Cohen Nov 2025

A Reemployment Right For People In Pretrial Detention, Jordan Laris Cohen

Texas A&M Law Review

Job loss is a major collateral consequence of pretrial detention. It frequently results from even short periods of detention and can have cascading and long term effects on income, housing security, family stability, and likelihood of incarceration—all despite the fact that people in pretrial detention are entitled to a presumption of innocence and indeed may never be found guilty of an offense. Given existing racial disparities in arrests, bail determinations, and bail amounts, job loss from pretrial detention further drives racial inequalities in employment and income. While job loss from pretrial detention inflicts substantial social harms and undermines due process, …

That Old College Try: Judge-Made Monopolies In The Market For Affinity Goods, John A. Rothchild Nov 2025

That Old College Try: Judge-Made Monopolies In The Market For Affinity Goods, John A. Rothchild

Texas A&M Law Review

There is a large market for goods such as t-shirts, coffee mugs, posters, and baseball caps that are emblazoned with the names and symbols of culturally prominent institutions—universities, athletic teams, musical bands, automobile brands. We buy, wear, and display those goods to express our affinity with the referenced institution. The owners of the trade symbols that adorn these items, which this Article refers to as “affinity goods,” jealously guard what they claim is their sole right, under the trademark laws, to authorize the use of their symbols as decoration. They have brought numerous lawsuits aimed at establishing and enforcing this …

Parenting Under Constraint: How Histories Of Abuse And Sexual Violence Shape Mothers' Caregiving In A Homeless Shelter, Kiera P. Irvin Nov 2025

Parenting Under Constraint: How Histories Of Abuse And Sexual Violence Shape Mothers' Caregiving In A Homeless Shelter, Kiera P. Irvin

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Background: Mothers experiencing homelessness often carry extensive trauma histories, yet little work examines how abuse and sexual violence shape day-to-day parenting inside communal shelter settings. This study explored how trauma histories intersect with shelter structures to influence caregiving and feelings surrounding parenting among homeless mothers.

Method: Using a qualitative design, four mothers (ages 30–51) residing in a large Midwestern homeless shelter completed approximately 30-minute, semi-structured interviews in a private room onsite. Data were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed with inductive reflexive thematic analysis in Dedoose.

Results: Three interrelated themes were identified. (1) Parenting Under Constraint, in which communal living, limited …

Proteomic Perspectives On Kras-Driven Cancers And Emerging Therapeutic Approaches, Ramesh Karki, Ru Chen, Sheng Pan Nov 2025

Proteomic Perspectives On Kras-Driven Cancers And Emerging Therapeutic Approaches, Ramesh Karki, Ru Chen, Sheng Pan

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

KRAS mutations are implicated in approximately 23% of all human malignancies, with particularly high prevalence in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) (~92%), colorectal cancer (CRC) (~49%), and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) (~35%). The recent approval of the KRASG12C-specific inhibitors for NSCLC represents a pivotal advancement in KRAS-targeted therapy. Nevertheless, the emergence of intrinsic and acquired resistance to KRAS-targeted therapies poses a significant clinical obstacle to targeting KRAS, which necessitates a deeper understanding of the resistance mechanisms. Recent progress in proteomic studies has enabled comprehensive profiling of the proteomic alterations driven by KRAS mutations, offering valuable insights into the disrupted KRAS …

Animal venom, known for its complex biochemical composition, presents a valuable source of therapeutic molecules, particularly for antiviral applications. Despite this potential, the industrial use of venom remains limited, with fewer than a dozen venom-derived compounds reaching commercial markets. This study underscores the significance of exploring venom’s natural diversity as a reservoir for novel bioactive compounds that could drive innovative drug development. We investigated the venom of the Moroccan black scorpion Androctonus mauritanicus (Am), applying solid-phase extraction (SPE) and high-performance reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) to fractionate the venom into 80 distinct samples. These fractions were subjected to detailed analysis …
