International Investment Law And Sustainable Development - Friend Or Foe?, Barnali Choudhury
International Investment Law And Sustainable Development - Friend Or Foe?, Barnali Choudhury
All Papers
Foreign direct investment (FDI) is widely regarded as a critical mechanism for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), yet the legal framework governing such investment often operates in tension with sustainability imperatives. This conference paper examines the complex relationship between international investment agreements (IIAs) and sustainable development and questions whether IIAs serve as instruments that promote or impede states’ pursuit of sustainability objectives. It argues that the structure and interpretation of IIAs, characterized by broad definitions and expansively worded standards of treatment as well as the use of investor–state dispute settlement (ISDS), have frequently constrained states’ regulatory autonomy, particularly in …

Public Housing Professionals Perspectives On Mobile Food Unit Location And Accessibility For Children, Antoinette Lashurn Simpson
Public Housing Professionals Perspectives On Mobile Food Unit Location And Accessibility For Children, Antoinette Lashurn Simpson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Poor nutrition is a major contributor to death in the United States, and residents of public housing face disproportionate challenges in maintaining adequate nutrition. Public housing is the nation’s oldest housing subsidy program, providing more than one million units for millions of residents, many of whom are women, minorities, and unmarried individuals with incomes below the poverty line. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore public housing professionals’ perspectives on using a mobile food unit located within housing communities to help reduce food insecurity. Feminist intersectionality theory provided the framework for this study, emphasizing how overlapping systems …
Associations Between Devices, Flavors, Ease Of Acquisition, And Use Of E-Cigarettes Among American Youth, Sasha Anderson
Associations Between Devices, Flavors, Ease Of Acquisition, And Use Of E-Cigarettes Among American Youth, Sasha Anderson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract Initiation of use of e-cigarettes is attributed to many factors and must be understood to curtail health-related problems such as cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases that are associated with use of tobacco products. This study used the Social Cognitive Theory to analyze how curiosity and peer influence could be possible predictors of e-cigarette use among youth in the United States. Predictors of flavor preference and acquisition were also examined. Data were acquired from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (N = 20,189). Statistical tests to determine existing relations and associations were binary and multinomial …
Enhancing Diabetes Self-Management Education And Support Knowledge And Awareness Among Nurses, Tamba Sam-Manimoi
Enhancing Diabetes Self-Management Education And Support Knowledge And Awareness Among Nurses, Tamba Sam-Manimoi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Diabetes mellitus (DM) affects 12% of the United States population at an annual cost of $412.9 billion. In the local clinic, 20% of the patient population has a diagnosis of DM. Despite the importance of diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) in managing DM, patients are often not educated on this important strategy. Leadership identified that patients were reporting a lack of knowledge regarding DSMES practices and that the nurses lacked the necessary knowledge and awareness to educate patients in DSMES. Thus, the purpose of this DNP project was to determine if an educational intervention focused on DM and DSMES …

UNLABELLED: The control of nitrogen metabolism in the model cyanobacterium
IMPORTANCE: Filamentous, nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria are valuable organisms for biotechnology applications and as models for the study of multicellularity in prokaryotes. Understanding the regulation of nitrogen fixation and heterocyst development is essential for optimizing their use in synthetic biology and as biofertilizers. This study identifies two novel nitrogen secondary regulators, Alr1976 (NsrX) and All0345 (NsrM), as part of the intricate regulatory circuit governing nitrogen metabolism in the model cyanobacterium

INTRODUCTION: Transitions of care (TOC) between hospital, ambulatory and home settings for high-risk adults with chronic diseases are complex, costly and often result in poor health outcomes. Suboptimal care transitions lead to medication errors, non-adherence, decreased self-management skills and inadequate follow-up, all of which contribute to readmissions or emergency department visits. The Transitional Care Model aims to address these challenges through patient-centred, in-home interventions. We propose to implement and evaluate TELE-TOC: Telehealth Education Leveraging Electronic Transitions Of Care for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients. This study will evaluate the added value of a virtual, pharmacy-based intervention integrated into an …

Introduction: Firearm access and associated risk behaviors (i.e., firearm storage and carriage) are established factors that increase the risk of firearm-related injuries. While extant research has demonstrated associations between singular substance use and these risks, little is known regarding the impact of polysubstance use on these outcomes. The present study aims to investigate the relationships between polysubstance use in adolescence and four specific firearm-related risks manifesting in emerging adulthood.
Methods: Ten years of annual data from a cohort of 1,042 adolescents initially aged 13-18 years were analyzed to identify polysubstance use trajectories and their associations with firearm-related behaviors in emerging …

Background: Justice-involved individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) face heightened relapse risks during the reentry period. While medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are effective, long-term recovery also depends on psychological and structural supports, including situational confidence (perceived ability to resist substance use in high-risk situations) and recovery capital (the internal and external resources that support recovery).
Methods: This cross-sectional study examined situational confidence and its association with recovery capital among 107 justice-involved adults receiving MOUD in an urban jail in Texas. Participants completed the Brief Situational Confidence Questionnaire (BSCQ) and the 10-item Brief Assessment of Recovery Capital (BARC-10). Mental …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research
A variety of digital technologies have been used to support early childhood development (ECD) programs in low-income South African communities. Even though technology has provided opportunities to increase access to health interventions, the lack of trust and socio-economic constraints under which these tools would need to work pose complex challenges. We examine home visitors’ work processes, experiences, and preferences of a conversational agent to support their work of administering social-emotional well-being assessments to young children ages 0-5. Analysis of the results of focus groups with 51 home visitors indicates the need for designing conversational agents that support ECD in the …
Enhancing Nitrogen Removal In High Permeability Bioretention Media: The Combined Role Of Biochar, Wood Chips And Hydraulic Design, Joshelyn Guimaray
Enhancing Nitrogen Removal In High Permeability Bioretention Media: The Combined Role Of Biochar, Wood Chips And Hydraulic Design, Joshelyn Guimaray
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Urban stormwater runoff can transport high nutrient loads to receiving waters, leading toeutrophication, harmful algal blooms, and the formation of hypoxic zones. Bioretention systems are a form of green infrastructure designed to mitigate these impacts, but their application in dense, ultra-urban environments is often limited by large land area requirements. This has led to the adoption of high permeability media (HPM) to accommodate higher hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) and reduce the system footprint. However, conventional HPM systems often show inconsistent removal of dissolved nitrogen species due to short hydraulic retention times (HRTs), a lack of organic carbon, and insufficient anoxic …
Improving Coral Restoration Outcomes Through Novel Molecular Applications, Matthew H. Gamache
Improving Coral Restoration Outcomes Through Novel Molecular Applications, Matthew H. Gamache
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Coral reef ecosystems are declining globally from numerous stressors, including localized pollution, disease, and marine heatwaves induced by climate change. To preserve these ecosystems, it is critical to identify corals that can withstand stressors—primarily future marine heatwaves—and prioritize them for coral restoration efforts until these stressors are mitigated. Coral responses to thermal stress can be influenced by several partners, including mutualistic microalgae and a vast prokaryotic community. Here, I use advanced molecular techniques to examine which partners (coral host, algal symbiont, and microbial communities) are associated with coral health, how they contribute to holobiont physiology, and their potential to increase …

Guillain-Barré syndrome is an acute polyradiculoneuropathy in which preceding infections often elicit the production of antibodies that target peripheral nerve antigens, principally gangliosides. Anti-ganglioside antibodies are thought to play a key role in the clinical diversity of the disease and can be helpful in clinical practice. Extensive research into clinical associations of individual anti-ganglioside antibody specificities has been performed. Recent research has highlighted glycolipid complexes, glycolipid combinations that may alter antibody binding, as targets. In this study, we investigated antibody reactivity patterns to glycolipids and glycolipid complexes using combinatorial array, in relation to clinical features in Guillain-Barré syndrome. In total, …

Introduction: Intraoperative anaesthesia handoffs represent a risk point in the care of surgical patients. Although often necessary to prevent fatigue, improve vigilance and optimise operational efficiency, critical information can be lost, potentially leading to postoperative complications. Structured handoffs can increase the transfer of knowledge during intraoperative anaesthesia handoffs, improving their quality. We therefore propose to test the primary hypothesis that a semi-structured intraoperative anaesthesia handoff cognitive aid reduces the number of serious 30-day complications in surgical patients.
Methods and analysis: We will enrol adults having non-cardiac surgery who are scheduled to have an intraoperative anaesthesia handoff for operational reasons. We …

Background: Primary hypertension in childhood tracks into adulthood and is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Studies conducted in individuals aged < 18 years, an age group without many of the confounding comorbid cardiovascular disease risk factors in adults, provide an opportunity to explore early cardiovascular target-organ injury.
Methods: Youths (n=132, mean age, 15.8 years) were stratified by blood pressure (BP) as low-BP, mid-BP, and high-BP and by left ventricular mass index as low-and high left ventricular mass index. Systemic circulating RNA, microRNA, and methylation profiles in peripheral blood mononuclear cells and deep proteome profiles in serum were determined using high-throughput sequencing techniques. In vitro cell culture experiments assessed angiotensin II- and microRNA-mediated Vash1 (vasohibin-1 protein) regulation and Vash1-mediated hypertrophic response.
Results: In high-BP youths, transcriptomics analysis identified …

Childhood trauma is a risk factor for bipolar disorder, but the biological mechanisms of this association remain incompletely defined. Gray matter differences observed after trauma exposure overlap with those reported in bipolar disorder, suggesting that the association between childhood trauma and bipolar disorder might be mediated through brain morphology.
Our goal was to determine whether cortical thickness, cortical surface or subcortical volume mediate the association between childhood trauma and bipolar disorder. We leveraged a large multi-site dataset from the ENIGMA Bipolar Disorder Working Group, comprising of 1,031 participants with bipolar disorder and 2,221 controls from 19 international cohorts. To identify …

Background: Traditional East Asian medicine (TM) is widely used in Korea and other East Asian countries. However, the effects of TM treatment on acute ischemic stroke (AIS) outcomes remain unclear, as previous studies lacked a sufficient sample size, a consecutive series design, or a prospective outcome capture approach. We aimed to investigate whether combining TM with conventional Western medicine (CM) treatments (C+TM) leads to better outcomes after AIS, relative to CM treatment alone.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 2157 consecutive patients with AIS from a prospectively collected registry (2011-2021) at our center and compared the CM and C+TM groups in terms …

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a neoplasm of antibody-producing plasma cells and is the second most prevalent hematological malignancy worldwide. Development of drug resistance and disease relapse significantly impede the success of MM treatment, highlighting the critical need to discover novel therapeutic targets. In a custom CRISPR/Cas9 screen targeting 197 DNA damage response-related genes, Protein Arginine N-Methyltransferase 1 (PRMT1) emerged as a top hit, revealing it as a potential therapeutic vulnerability and survival dependency in MM cells. PRMT1, a major Type I PRMT enzyme, catalyzes the asymmetric transfer of methyl groups to arginine residues, influencing gene transcription and protein function through …

During cancer development, mutations promote changes in gene expression that cause transformation. Leukemia associated with aberrant HOXA expression is driven by translocations of nucleoporin genes or KMT2A as well as mutations in NPM1. The mechanistic convergence of these disparate mutations remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that mutant nucleophosmin 1 (NPM1c) forms nuclear condensates in human cell lines, mouse models, and primary patient samples. We show NPM1c phase separation is necessary and sufficient to recruit NUP98 and KMT2A to condensates. Through extensive mutagenesis and pharmacological destabilization of phase separation, we find that NPM1c condensates are necessary for regulating gene expression, promoting …

Drowning is the leading cause of death in children 1–4 years old in the USA. Paediatricians play an important role in giving anticipatory guidance on drowning prevention. This quality improvement initiative aimed to increase the rate of drowning prevention counselling with provision of educational materials to caregivers of children aged 0–10 years during clinical encounters in an outpatient setting.
We refined a previously published Texas state educational programme that included evidence-based counselling strategies across three Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycles, with the addition of preintervention baseline counselling phase during expansion of the programme nationally to 17 and 21 states …

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer share multiple risk factors and are the leading causes of morbidity and death worldwide. This study aims to examine historical and projected trends of the combined CVD-cancer global estimates and their shared risk factors.
Methods: Death and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) associated with CVDs, cancers, and their risk factors were obtained from the GBD (Global Burden of Disease) 2021 study. Historical estimates from 1990 to 2021 and forecast data from 2025 to 2050 were examined across age groups, regions, sociodemographic index, and sex.
Results: In 2021, CVD-cancer resulted in age-standardized DALY rates of 8009 …

Background: Neonates with tetralogy of Fallot and symptomatic cyanosis (sTOF) require early intervention, using a staged or primary repair strategy. Postprocedural mortality risk within this group is considerable. The mode of death and associated factors have been inadequately defined in early childhood mortality following treatment of sTOF. This study aims to describe the timing, cause, and associated risk factors of postprocedural death in infants with sTOF.
Methods: Neonates with sTOF who had an initial intervention from 2005 to 2017 at 9 centers of the Congenital Cardiac Research Collaborative were reviewed. Among nonsurvivors, details regarding timing, cause of death, and last …

Pregnancy requires a supportive uterine environment facilitated by steroid hormone–regulated differentiation of endometrial stromal fibroblasts into decidual cells and tight control of inflammation. Serum response factor (SRF) is a widely expressed transcription factor essential for mesenchymal cell growth and differentiation with noted roles in hormonal regulation of muscle tissues but little characterization in reproductive organs. Here, we reveal that endometrial SRF is dysregulated in human endometriosis and is critical for female reproductive success in mice through regulation of endometrial stromal and epithelial cells. Immunohistochemical analysis identified decreased endometrial SRF expression in infertile endometriosis patient tissues. RNAi-based SRF knockdown in human …

BACKGROUND: Staged palliation of hypoplastic left heart syndrome and variants begins with the Norwood or hybrid procedure. Hybrid palliation is used in a minority of cases and often reserved for high-risk patients. Stented hybrid (SH) comprises bilateral pulmonary artery bands and ductal stenting, and medical hybrid (MH) comprises bilateral pulmonary artery bands and prostaglandins. MH use and outcomes have not been well described. We sought to compare MH, SH, and surgical stage 1 (SS1) using a national database.
METHODS: Patients from the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative database born between 2016 and 2021 were categorized by initial intervention: MH, …
