Statistical Challenges And Simulation Results For Pilot Clinical Trials, Weiliang Cen Nov 2025

Statistical Challenges And Simulation Results For Pilot Clinical Trials, Weiliang Cen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Background: The effect size estimated from a pilot trial is often an inaccurate reflection of the true effect size observed in a large trial, leading to either underestimation or overestimation. Published data suggest that effect sizes from large trials are typically smaller than those reported in their corresponding pilot trials. To address this discrepancy, conservative or discount adjustment methods are widely recommended to modify pilot trial effect sizes when calculating sample sizes, thereby maintaining adequate statistical power. This study aims to assess effect sizes from both pilot and large trials and to evaluate the performance of existing adjustment methods.

Development And Initial Validation Of An Instrument To Measure Teachers’ Socioscientific Issues Instruction Perceptions, Michael Edward Mitchell Nov 2025

Development And Initial Validation Of An Instrument To Measure Teachers’ Socioscientific Issues Instruction Perceptions, Michael Edward Mitchell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Little is known about how high school science teachers perceive Socioscientific Issues (SSI) on a broad scale, including what factors shape their views of a pedagogical shift to adopt SSI. To address this critical gap, I constructed the Teachers’ Socioscientific Issues (SSI) Perceptions Survey (TSPS), the first instrument specifically designed and initially validated to measure teacher perceptions of SSI integration. This study presents the development and validation of the TSPS, offering robust evidence for its reliability, fairness, and construct validity.

Survey development adhered to gold-standard psychometric protocols (Bandalos, 2018; Crocker & Algina, 1986; DeVellis, 2012; McCoach et al., 2013) and …

More Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Research

This study extends current understanding of digital competence by exploring alternative skill sets harnessed by digitally disadvantaged groups that enable their practices to continue. By combining practice theory with the socially extended mind framework, we address the research question: What forms of offline competence support the integration of digital practices among a disadvantaged consumer group, and how do these competences influence the cohesion and continuity of their practices? Through an ethnography of a ‘Street Church’ community, we demonstrate how different forms of offline social interaction (i.e., sequential, synchronised, substitutive) and group culture
function as valuable resources for guiding digital practices, …

Citrobacter Sedlakii As A Rare Cause Of Brain Abscess In A Late-Preterm Omani Infant: Case Report And Literature Review, Mohammed S. Al Reesi, Moza Al Mamari, Sara Magzoub, Yasser Abdulrazek

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Brain abscess in neonates is rare but remains a severe, life-threatening complication of meningitis with significant morbidity and mortality. While Citrobacter koseri and Citrobacter freundii are commonly implicated in brain-abscess formation, Citrobacter sedlakii is an uncommon causative pathogen. To date, only two cases of neonatal brain abscess caused by C. sedlakii have been reported in the literature. Early diagnosis, timely surgical intervention and prompt antibiotic therapy are critical to achieving a favourable outcome. A third case of a C. sedlakii brain abscess in a preterm infant, presenting in 2024 to a tertiary-care hospital in Oman, is reported together with a …

Nanodiamonds (NDs), tetrahedral carbon structures with a size ranging from 1 to 100 nm, have gained growing attention in recent years due to their distinct optical, thermal, and mechanical properties compared to other carbon nanomaterials (e.g., graphene, carbon nanotubes, carbon dots). Combined with a high surface-to-volume ratio and tunable and chemically versatile surfaces, these support broad applications across catalysis, electronics, and life sciences. Moreover, the biocompatible characteristics of NDs enable their controllable interfacial interactions with biological systems, positioning them as excellent candidates for advancing cutting-edge biomedical sciences, particularly through the engineering of efficient material biointerfaces that facilitate optimal interactions with …

The deep sea is a largely unexplored extreme environment supporting a diverse biological community adapted to low temperatures and high pressures. Such environments support microbial life that may be a source of novel antibiotics and other drugs. Whilst this is often the case, many species with bioactive capabilities may be missed with traditional culturing methods. In this study, a total of 16 different concentrations and types of media were employed, to culture 389 bacterial isolates using Dilution to Extinction methods and Actinobacteria Directed Cultivation techniques. This generated 72 (18.6%) isolates with narrow and broad-spectrum activity against ESKAPE pathogens including Escherichia …

On Univariate Process Capability Indices: Some Issues And Applications, Kuntal Bera Nov 2025

On Univariate Process Capability Indices: Some Issues And Applications, Kuntal Bera

Doctoral Theses

Process capability indices (PCIs) are proposed to assess the performance of manufacturing processes. PCIs evaluate the process performance by comparing the manufacturing tolerance with the natural variability of the process. Since process parameters are unknown, therefore, PCIs are estimated based on a random sample. Assessment of performance of a process based on estimated PCI values may be unreliable due to sampling fluctuations. Hence, it is essential to study the statistical properties of the estimators of PCI. Thus far, most of the studies on PCIs have been done under the assumption that the quality characteristic under investigation follows an independent and …

On Perturbed Best Response Learning And Equilibrium Selection In Homogeneous And Bayesian Evolutionary Games, Sayan Mukherjee Nov 2025

On Perturbed Best Response Learning And Equilibrium Selection In Homogeneous And Bayesian Evolutionary Games, Sayan Mukherjee

Doctoral Theses

Evolutionary game theory is a sub-field of game theory concerned with the behavior of large populations of strategically interacting players who recurrently revise their strategies based on the availability of better payoff opportunities. In such games, rather than directly focusing on the equilibrium analysis (as in the case of static/one-shot games), the strategic behavior of the population is modeled via an evolutionary game dynamic (a differential equation on a suitable state space of the population). Consequently, the theory aims to study the asymptotic properties (such as stability, convergence) of these evolutionary dynamics. An important class of evolutionary dynamic studied in …

It is currently understood that the characteristic loss of the repressive histone mark H3K27me3 in PFA ependymoma and diffuse midline glioma (DMG) are caused by complementary mechanisms mediated by EZHIP and the oncohistone H3K27M, respectively. To support the complementarity of these mechanisms, rare H3K27M-negative DMGs express EZHIP. Interestingly, EZHIP is one of the few genes recurrently mutated in PFA. The significance of EZHIP mutations in PFA, and whether EZHIP has wider functions in addition to repression of H3K27me3 deposition, are not known. Here, we investigated the mutational landscape of EZHIP in pediatric brain tumors. We found that EZHIP mutations occur …

Paintings Analysis Using Copilot Ai: The Case Of Winston Churchill And Art In His Life, Yuri Zagvazdin

Learning and Educational Center Virtual Teaching and Learning Conference

The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate a method for analyzing artistic style and its potential evolution using the Copilot AI platform. As a case study, I explore the paintings of Winston Churchill (1874–1965), the British Prime Minister, who was also a passionate and prolific painter. Although Churchill began painting in his forties, he produced over 500 works, with his final piece completed in 1962.

Churchill frequently painted scenes from Southern France and Morocco—locations he returned to repeatedly throughout his artistic life. Remarkably, he continued painting even after suffering multiple cerebrovascular accidents. Stroke-induced brain damage is typically detrimental to …

Reckoning With Antisemitism In History And Tradition, Nathaniel Shaw Hay, Isaac Barnes May Nov 2025

Reckoning With Antisemitism In History And Tradition, Nathaniel Shaw Hay, Isaac Barnes May

Pepperdine Law Review

“History and tradition” has become a watchword of modern constitutional interpretation, shaping Supreme Court jurisprudence and framing ongoing debates over the meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment. Yet this interpretive framework remains under-theorized in one critical respect: how should it grapple with the prejudices embedded in the very traditions it invokes? This Article examines that question through the lens of anti-Jewish discrimination in Anglo-American law, using this history as a case study to examine both the perils and promise of relying on history as a source of constitutional authority. For centuries, the common law excluded Jews from full civic participation in …

Comparing The Soil Properties Assessment Between Annual Crops And Grassland Systems, Rahika Gatla, Shreeya Adhikari, Sai Amurtha Varshini Karnati

Scholars Week

Soil properties are fundamental to sustainable agricultural productivity, influencing crop yield and soil health. This study examined the effects of perennial grassland systems compared to annual maize–soybean (Zea mays–Glycine max) cropping on selected soil properties. Grassland systems such as Kentucky bluegrass and Miscanthus provide continuous cover that enhances soil structure, water retention, while annual systems often involve greater soil disturbance and higher fertilizer use. A total of 48 soil samples (24 disturbed and 24 undisturbed, six replications per crop) were collected on September 13th, 2025 from Grenada and Calloway silt loam soils at Pullen Farm, Murray, KY. Soil chemical properties, …

Screening Of Potential Plant Growth‐Promoting Rhizobacteria (Pgpr)-Assisted Phytoremediation To Mitigate Lead Toxicity In Uae Soils, Zeinab A. Mohamed

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Plant growth-promoting actinobacteria can enhance plant resilience to heavy metal contamination. This study evaluated the effects of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase (ACCD)-producing rhizosphere-competent (RC) and non-rhizosphere-competent (NRC) actinobacterial strains on corn growth and lead (Pb) tolerance. A greenhouse experiment was conducted under Pb stress [1000 mg/kg soil as Pb(NO₃)₂] to compare the two isolates. Inoculated plants performed better than uninoculated controls, particularly in non-contaminated soils. Under Pb stress, the isolates #22 (NRC) and #30 (RC) significantly enhanced plant height, dry weight, and chlorophyll content, with RC isolate #30 exhibiting the most pronounced effects. Identified as Streptomyces mirabilis UAE2, isolate #30 reduced electrolyte …

Analysis Of An Effective Training Curriculum: Solutions Toincrease Participants' Interest In Training Teachingmaterials, Maulidya Husnul Khatimah, Yoto Yoto

Jurnal Pendidikan Sains

This research is important because it analyzes the curriculum as a primary tool for generating and maintaining participant interest. Curricula that are irrelevant, monotonous, or misaligned with participant needs are often the main causes of low motivation and participation. Furthermore, this research encourages the exploration and implementation of more innovative teaching methods and materials in training curricula. External pressure in the form of demands or instructions, rather than internal motivation, drives most training activities. This can reduce engagement and learning effectiveness. To overcome this, training institutions need to design programs that are relevant, flexible, and able to encourage participants' intrinsic …

Beyond Unemployment: An Investigation Of Social Policies To Empower Workers In A Changing World Of Work, Lukas Lehner Nov 2025

Beyond Unemployment: An Investigation Of Social Policies To Empower Workers In A Changing World Of Work, Lukas Lehner

Dissertation Awards

This dissertation analyzes social policies aimed at supporting unemployed workers, scrutinizing consequences of such policies on facilitating access to training, employment, and in improving wages, health, and well-being amidst a changing world of work. Central to the research are two field experiments at scale (chapters 2 and 3), designed in collaboration with implementation partners, uniquely leveraging high-quality administrative records and extensive survey data collected over three years. Chapter two tests the idea of guaranteed employment in a natural context by carefully evaluating a job guarantee scheme, which highlights the psychosocial value of employment. Social programs of this kind often suffer …
