Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) has rapidly emerged with the capability to generate different forms of content, including text, images, videos, and other modalities, which can achieve a quality similar to content created by humans. As a result, AIGC is now widely applied across various domains such as digital marketing, education, and public health, and has shown promising results by enhancing content creation efficiency and improving information delivery. However, there are few studies that explore the latest progress and emerging challenges of AIGC across different domains. To bridge this gap, this paper brings together 16 scholars from multiple disciplines to …

The Use Of Less-Lethal Force By Law Enforcement: A Legal Analysis Of Civil Liability Cases In The Use Of Bean Bags And Rubber Bullets In Policing, Kenneth Lomenzo, Joshua Rosenbaum, Nathan Cronin, Mason Meyers, Akramul Hasan

Journal of Criminal Justice and Law

The use of less-lethal weapons such as bean bag rounds and rubber bullets has become a prominent and controversial mark of contemporary policing. Although these munitions are designed to incapacitate without resorting to deadly force, their deployment has resulted in serious injuries, fatalities, and a growing body of litigation. This article examines how federal appellate courts have addressed such cases through a systematic legal content analysis of 16 decisions issued between 1999 and 2025. Each case involved a claim under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 alleging excessive force in violation of the Fourth Amendment. The analysis considers judicial reasoning, liability outcomes, …

Regional Sustainability Gap Index (Rsgi): A White Paper, Rob Ogburn, Bill Provaznik, Keke Wu Nov 2025

Regional Sustainability Gap Index (Rsgi): A White Paper, Rob Ogburn, Bill Provaznik, Keke Wu

Business & Community Services

The Regional Sustainability Gap Index (RSGI) is a new measure designed to assess whether a region is on a sustainable economic path for its residents. The index combines two components: Mi, which measures the current wage gap between a county and the most economically active county in the state, and Ri, which measures each county’s wage-growth trajectory relative to that same frontier county. Together, Mi and Ri reveal not only a region’s present wage altitude but also the direction in which that wage horizon is moving. In Washington State, Mi reflects the distance between a county’s median wages and King …

Towards A Generalized And Optimized Apriori Approach, Artem Abdikov

Master's Theses

Apriori is a machine learning algorithm developed in 1994 by R. Agrawal and R. Srikant for association rule mining purposes. This family of algorithms takes transactional data and analyzes relationships between variables in large datasets. The typical output of such algorithms is a prediction that if users choose item X, it is highly likely that they will also choose item Y. Apriori is known to be a robust algorithm and is used by many large companies in order to analyze user tendencies and even make recommendations. Although Apriori is a powerful algorithm, its original implementation is known to have limitations, …

Examining Predictors Of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Participation Among Breast Cancer Patients: Insights From The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Maxine Rose Duncan, Maxine Rose Duncan

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

The current study explored the factors influencing female breast cancer patients’ intentions to attend mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programs in Texas, utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as the guiding framework. MBSR is a widely recognized stress management intervention shown to improve psychological well-being, yet its adoption among this population remains limited. The current study specifically examined the relationships between attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control in predicting intentions to participate. A quantitative, cross-sectional survey design was employed, with 60 participants recruited via social media and support groups (see Appendix A). Data were collected using a validated TPB-based …

Impact Of Community Factors On Naloxone Overdose Reduction In Ohio, Theophilus Oduro Frimpong

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The opioid crisis in Ohio, driven by fentanyl, persists due to inequitable access to naloxone despite its proven effectiveness. This study examined how socioeconomic status (SES), race/ethnicity, population density, and hospital availability per capita predicted naloxone overdose reversals (dependent variable) in Ohio. Social-ecological theory guided this quantitative historical correlational analysis of Ohio’s Project DAWN index data (N = 5,280). Inclusion criteria included individuals ages 18 to 65 with naloxone-related overdose reversals (dependent), naloxone distribution (moderator), and community factors (independent). Multiple linear regression results showed that SES (p >.50), race/ethnicity (% White, p = .588; % Black, p = .495; % …

Field Validation Of Multiple Species Distribution Models Shows Variation In Performance For Predicting Aedes Albopictus Distributions At The Invasion Edge, Anna V. Shattuck, Brandon D. Hollingsworth Ph.D., Jared Skrotzki, Scott R. Campbell, Christopher L. Romano, Courtney C. Murdock Nov 2025

Field Validation Of Multiple Species Distribution Models Shows Variation In Performance For Predicting Aedes Albopictus Distributions At The Invasion Edge, Anna V. Shattuck, Brandon D. Hollingsworth Ph.D., Jared Skrotzki, Scott R. Campbell, Christopher L. Romano, Courtney C. Murdock

Faculty Publications

Background

Climate and land use changes have resulted in range expansion of many species. In this shifting disease landscape, it is important to leverage tools that can predict the distributions of invading vectors to target surveillance and control efforts and identify at-risk populations. Species distribution models (SDMs) are used to predict ranges of invasive species; however, invasive species often violate assumptions of equilibrium and niche conservatism. Moreover, these studies are rarely validated using independent data.

Methods

We use long-term surveillance data for Aedes albopictus, a highly invasive mosquito capable of transmitting several arboviruses, at its range edge to evaluate a …

Venetoclax-based doublets with azacitidine or low dose cytarabine are the standard of care for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in older patients or those unfit for intensive chemotherapy. However, some patients do not attain complete remission, and over time, most patients relapse. Frontline triplet therapy incorporating a targeted therapy (FLT3, IDH or menin inhibitor) is an emerging treatment concept under investigation for this population. Initial triplet regimens have yielded encouraging composite complete remission and measurable residual disease negativity rates, enabling the transition to allogeneic stem cell transplantation for eligible patients. While effective, triplets are associated with myelosuppression and …

Indigenous Invisibility: Gaps In Education About Indigenous Peoples Among Environmental Decision-Makers, Brittany D. Hunt, Ryan E. Emanuel, David E. Wilkins, Shelly H. Wilkins Nov 2025

Indigenous Invisibility: Gaps In Education About Indigenous Peoples Among Environmental Decision-Makers, Brittany D. Hunt, Ryan E. Emanuel, David E. Wilkins, Shelly H. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Millions of Indigenous people belong to hundreds of Tribal nations and self-determined communities throughout the United States. Many of these groups continue to steward lands and waters that have shaped their distinct cultural and political identities since time immemorial. Increasingly, environmental professionals acknowledge the need to respect, understand, and defer to Indigenous knowledge about Earth's stewardship, but substantial barriers prevent full realization of these goals. One deep-seated barrier is a widespread deficiency in basic education about Indigenous peoples. Education on Indigenous peoples in schools is often fraught with two problems: erasure and stereotypes. Thus, students who pursue environmental careers often …

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Glioblastoma is an aggressive central nervous system tumor characterized by diffuse infiltration. Despite substantial advances in oncology, survival outcomes have shown little improvement over the past three decades. Radiotherapy remains a cornerstone of treatment; however, it faces several challenges, including considerable inter-observer variability in clinical target volume delineation, dose constraints associated with adjacent organs at risk, and the persistently poor prognosis of affected patients. Recent advances in artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning, have shown promise in automating radiation therapy mapping to improve consistency, accuracy, and efficiency. This narrative review explores current auto segmentation frameworks, dose mapping, and biologically informed radiotherapy …

Connectedness Of Uncertainty, Volatility, And Stock Market Performance, Szczepan Urjasz

Journal of Banking and Financial Economics

This study examines the dynamic connectedness and spillover effects among various financial and economic indicators, including uncertainty indices, market volatility, and stock market indices, from 3 June 2008, to 30 December 2024. This interconnectedness implies that shocks originating in one market or asset class can rapidly transmit to others, underscoring the potential for systemic risk and financial contagion. The US emerges as a significant net transmitter of influence within the global financial system, with the VIX playing a crucial role in influencing global financial conditions. Major European equity markets also transmit influence, while the Geopolitical Risk Index (GRI) and the …

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Most patients present at advanced stages, and the effectiveness of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and immune checkpoint inhibitors is constrained by limited patient response. A subset of HCC shows elevated expression of the promoter 2 ("P2")-driven hepatocyte nuclear factor 4 alpha (HNF4α) isoform, which directly transcriptionally represses the circadian brain and muscle ARNT-like protein 1 (BMAL1) transcription factor. This subtype of HCC is robustly inhibited by the plant-based flavonoid nobiletin (NOB), a circadian-fortifying compound. Using patient-matched human HCC and serum, we show that BMAL1-deficient HCC shows exaggerated carnitine palmitoyl transferase …

Background: Previous studies have reported excellent disease control and survival in patients with well-lateralized, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC)-7 T1-2N2b tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The reduced treatment volume is associated with lower rates of physician-assessed toxicity. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) have been proposed as a similarly reliable measure, but the body of literature is limited for unilaterally treated patients. Our goal was to review PROs of such patients who had reduced treatment volumes.

Methods: We reviewed PROs of patients with AJCC-7 T1-2N2b disease treated with ipsilateral radiation therapy (RT), with or without surgery or chemotherapy before RT. PROs were …

Coordinated Transfer Of Dna Between Pol Θ And Pol Δ Resets Microhomology Choice During Double-Strand Break Repair, Yuzhen Li, Mark Returan, Adele T Guerin, April M Averill, Dorcas Oladapo, Sylvie Doublié, Richard D Wood Nov 2025

Coordinated Transfer Of Dna Between Pol Θ And Pol Δ Resets Microhomology Choice During Double-Strand Break Repair, Yuzhen Li, Mark Returan, Adele T Guerin, April M Averill, Dorcas Oladapo, Sylvie Doublié, Richard D Wood

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

DNA polymerase theta (Pol θ)-mediated end joining (TMEJ) initiates DNA double-strand break repair by using short homologies (microhomologies) between single-stranded DNA tails. This repair process is particularly important in cancer cells defective in homologous recombination. The exonuclease function of DNA polymerase delta (Pol δ) has been identified as an essential component for TMEJ, functioning to remove unpaired bases flanking a microhomology (MH). It is not known if the exonuclease removes all unpaired bases at once and how this removal might affect subsequent MH selection. Here, we reconstituted a functional TMEJ repair process using purified human Pol θ and Pol δ. …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Montelukast sodium (MS) is a leukotriene receptor antagonist and used clinically as an antiasthma agent. MS has been hypothesized to have adverse effects in insects. To test this hypothesis, MS was added to the artificial diet of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster Meigen (Diptera: Drosophilidae) at different concentrations (1200, 1600, 2000, and 2400 mg/L) under laboratory conditions. The effects of MS on the survival rate and development time of D. melanogaster, as well as its effects on malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (CYP450) enzyme activity in adults were investigated. The genotoxic effect of MS in whole adults was …

Ultraviolet filters (UVFs) are constituents of skincare products that protect skin against UV ray damage, such as suntan, sunburn, and skin tumors. Due to their ability to biotransform, UVFs are considered emerging pollutants. Benzophenone-2 (BP-2), with a yellowish crystalline appearance, is one of the widely used UVFs in skincare products. It enters the aquatic environment by washing off the skin during swimming and recreational activities and becomes hazardous to aquatic life due to its lipophilicity and bioaccumulative potential. This study was designed to evaluate the acute and chronic toxicity of BP-2 for the freshwater fish Labeo rohita. For acute toxicity, …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In recent decades, significant changes have occurred in the composition of zooplankton, especially in the Ponto-Caspian Basin. An important component of zooplankton in this region is cladocerans of the genus Cercopagis. However, the introduction of invasive species means that many species of this genus have probably become extinct. Because their disappearance molecular study of these organisms is no longer possible. Therefore, a comparative analysis of morphological variability has become more important. We studied the morphological variability of all 12 currently known species of the genus. Samples from the Caspian, Azov, Black, and Baltic Seas were analyzed. The number of species …

This paper addresses the critical challenge of fraud detection in medical insurance claims-a pervasive issue causing significant financial losses in healthcare-using Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). Given the intricate nature of healthcare data, traditional fraud detection methods do not inherently capture the complex relationships and patterns among different entities. We explore the potential of GNNs to effectively identify fraudulent claims by modeling the interactions among various entities-such as patients, healthcare providers, diagnoses, and services-as a heterogeneous graph. We employ two state-of-the-art heterogeneous GNN architectures, HINormer (Heterogeneous Information Network Transformer) and HybridGNN, along with a modified homogeneous GNN, RE-GraphSAGE (GraphSAGE Graph Sample …

Iron metabolism drives key erythropoietic processes, including hemoglobinization, survival, and proliferation. Here, we developed in vivo methods to interrogate how iron regulates erythropoiesis and report that mitochondrial iron transport via mitoferrin-1 (MFRN1) is essential for erythroid cell cycle progression. mfrn1 embryos had severely decreased erythroid cell number caused by cell cycle arrest at G2/M. They had enlarged nuclei, suggesting a mitotic defect. Iron supplementation rescued the cell cycle defect, implicating mitochondrial iron deficiency as its cause. In contrast, fpn1 mutants, anemic from systemic iron deficiency, had less severe decreases in erythroid mitochondrial iron than mfrn1 mutants and no proliferative defects. …
