This paper explores how urban public space design in China responds to the growing demand for solitude, with a particular focus on the unique social and cultural preferences of the one-child generation. Drawing on relational thinking and affordance theory, the study examines how public spaces intentionally designed to promote social interaction are appropriated for solitary use. Through case analyses of public spaces in Shanghai and Yantai, China, the paper reveals the emergence of improvised and serendipitous affordances that reflect changing user behaviours and cultural expectations. Co-located intergenerational active play enables meaningful interaction between generations while supporting young early childhood development and positive aging. Existing literature highlights the potential of tangible embedded and embodied interaction (TEI) in promoting active play and intergenerational interaction. Through a series of co-design workshops involving grandchild-grandparent dyads, fourteen ideas were generated and analysed using behavioural coding. Three themes were identified: ‘Ball games’, ‘Cubbyhouse’, and ‘Build and knock’. Ball games had the highest potential for equal participation, stimulating a range of Fundamental Movement Skill (FMS) and sustaining engagement. In response to the growing emphasis on design-driven innovation, this study explores the evolving mindset behind design industry–academia collaborations in Taiwan—particularly the shift from practice-oriented practices toward more exploratory, future-oriented practices. This study investigates two distinct collaboration models—practice-oriented and foresight-oriented—by analyzing differences in project execution while examining the types and needs of participating students and collaborating organizations. Based on in-depth interviews with 16 stakeholders—including participating students, participating advisors, collaborating organizations, design consultants, and project managers—the study proposes a comparative framework of three dimensions and ten aspects to characterize three collaboration types: practice-oriented, foresight-oriented (near-future), and foresight-oriented (distant-future). This paper presents a study based on three participatory workshops evaluating Nature Postcards from Finland, Japan, and those generated by artificial intelligence. The meaning fulness of place is examined through theories of human–nature connection—specifically restoration, nature-relatedness, and engagement with beauty—alongside the concept of sense of place. Post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) profoundly affects patients' physical health, functional independence, and overall quality of life. However, existing rehabilitation strategies often face challenges in treatment adherence due to insufficient real-time feedback and low patient motivation. To address these limitations, this study designed and evaluated Dysphagia Dynamics, a wearable rehabilitation system integrating surface electro myo graphy (sEMG)-based biofeedback to guide Chin Tuck Against Resistance (CTAR) training. What elements make you feel that this is “home”? This study investigates the multifaceted concept of “home” for people with dementia, extending beyond physical shelter to encompass sensory, emotional, and relational dimensions. Drawing on a qualitative, participatory co-design approach at GRACE Lab— a living lab embedded in a Milan dementia village—we engaged five residents with mild-to-moderate dementia, care staff, and design researchers in semi-structured interviews, observations, storytelling, and one-on-one workshops. Facial movement delivers rich emotional messages. This pictorial explores a novel concept in enhancing expressive facial communication – the Internal Facial Contour (IFC). The IFC device constructs a linear visual language on the face through a collection of face-worn wearables. These wearable augmentations deform in response to facial muscle movement, thereby suggesting emotional states. The shape of the IFC device naturally becomes visually wider and more open when smiling; in contrast, it becomes narrower and more closed when frowning. Menstrual pain affects a significant proportion of individuals worldwide, yet it has long been stigmatized and remains under explored in both design research and industry. Existing technologies primarily focus on symptom tracking or pain relief, overlooking the complex, temporal, and embodied nature of menstrual pain while perpetuating narrow narratives. This study presents Petpal+, an integrated service-design proposal for long-term pet care, developed through exploratory interviews (8 owners, 2 veterinarians) and validation sessions (2 owners, 2 veterinarians). The resulting artefacts include: (1) a mobile app with IoT-enabled devices for home monitoring, (2) a Medical Decision Handbook to guide treatment discussions, and (3) a Clinic Website to centralize care resources. Although smart home products have significant market potential in China, their adoption rate remains relatively low. One contributing factor is the generational differences in consumer purchasing behavior, shaped by distinct socio-cultural backgrounds. This study investigates the consumer behaviors and decision-making processes of Chinese consumers from four generational cohorts—Baby Boomers, Generation X, Generation Y, and Generation Z. This study introduces the "Field Mailbox" and "Dialog Diorama" - two research artifacts designed to facilitate situated dialogues between owners and their everyday objects, exploring the design of personal, reflexive toolkits. Using LLM-based generative AI, the study progressively grants conversational agency to objects within a Research-through-Design approach. We present Squeeze Machine, an experimental interactive experience, aiming for a critical-heritage exhibition at MUNCH museum. Our design process weaved together three research threads: (1) designing embodied interaction for critical heritage, (2) using uncomfortable interaction, and (3) facilitating critical reflection focusing on social beliefs of authority. We conducted interaction tests at a university laboratory (N=16, 8 pairs). Participant responses illustrate that Squeeze Machine could evoke visitors to reflect on their personal experience, increase visitor curiosity about the exhibition and support reflection on curated artefacts. The exploration also brought out some challenges for applying discomfort through control in an exhibition context.

This study explores how generative AI (GAI) and humans interpret emotional meanings through color in cinematic visuals. Drawing from film color theory, we designed a set of mood palettes and applied them to keyframes generated by GAI. Using qualitative questionnaires, we compared emotional interpretations from human participants and GPT-4o. Results revealed overlapping but diverging perceptions: humans relied on narrative context and memory, while AI leaned on statistical associations. These findings highlight GAI’s limited emotional grounding and suggest opportunities to enhance visual storytelling tools through hybrid color-emotion frameworks. This study presents Scent Camera, an interactive olfactory device designed to facilitate emotional regulation among young individuals experiencing stress. It investigates the potential of scent in triggering emotional memory and modulating mood through a multisensory interaction that bridges visual and olfactory perception. This study explores the use of generative artificial intelligence (Generative AI) in virtual sportscasting for grassroots baseball in Taiwan. It focuses on how AI-generated tone and real-time game data influence audience immersion, emotional engagement, and trust. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining surveys and Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA), with participants being parents from a youth baseball team in Hsinchu. They viewed three types of commentary: neutral, supportive, and supportive with data, and rated perceived excitement and style. This study explores five core healing design factors in the spatial environment of elderly rehabilitation clinics and ranks their importance through expert interviews and surveys of senior users. This study aims to reduce the burden of administrative procedures related to death and inheritance by focusing on entry items in ending notes and identifying related challenges in terms of understanding and information sharing. Thirty-four ending notes were analyzed, and their entry items were organized into 25 categories. Using Hayashi’s Quantification Theory Type III and cluster analysis, the notes were classified into three groups to clarify their characteristics. Prolonged static postures during dental procedures, such as implant surgeries, often lead to significant physical fatigue, especially in the lumbar region of dental professionals. To address this issue, a dental operating stool (OS) with an adjustable seat tilt was developed and evaluated. This study aimed to identify the optimal seat tilt angle to reduce physical strain and improve work efficiency. Experiments were conducted at four seat tilt angles: 0°, 3°, 5°, and 7°. This study examined how different narrative perspectives in chatbot dialogues shape users’ identity perceptions and willingness to continue interaction. 86 participants interacted with a LINE BOT framed in first-, second-, or third-person voice during an 8-day academic task. Findings showed that the 1st- person perspective fostered more personalized identity projections—such as mentor, peer, or self— and encouraged longer engagement duration. The 3rd-person perspective, while emotionally distant, yielded the highest willingness to continue use, suggesting broader acceptability. In healthcare design, increasing attention has been given to the well-being of people with visual impairments. How inclusive game design can support their social interaction and mental well-being remains under explored in healthcare design. This study aims to explore how visually impaired and sighted individuals create co-experience through a board game. We designed a 3×3 soft-surface tactile board prototype that combines membranes deformation and vibration feedback, to provide a relatively equal gaming platform for players with different visual abilities.
