Surgical site infections are a devastating complication of instrumented orthopaedic surgery, particularly in the spine. Bacterial biofilms, once formed on the implant surfaces, exhibit antibiotic tolerance and immune escape, which lead to treatment challenges. Up to 9% of instrumented spine surgeries result in infection, despite the use of systemic antibiotics and local, powdered antibiotics for prophylaxis. The bacteria that survive the initial prophylaxis may be susceptible to a second, high dose of antibiotic prophylaxis prior to establishing at the site. Hence, we designed a local drug delivery system consisting of polylactic acid (PLA) film pockets that can be noninvasively triggered …
The Moral Crisis Of Maternal Mortality In The Us, Jensen F. Ware
The Moral Crisis Of Maternal Mortality In The Us, Jensen F. Ware
Honors Theses
This thesis argues that the US crisis of maternal mortality is not an unavoidable tragedy, but a moral and policy failure. I argue that maternal well‑being is one of the most important indicators of a society’s overall health. When mothers receive the care, respect, and support they need, it reflects the strength of healthcare systems, the culture, and our commitment to future generations. The continued loss of mothers from preventable deaths reveals a system that fails many women and their families, especially Black women, low‑income women, and those in rural communities. First, I introduce the issue of maternal mortality in …
Quality Improvement (Qi) Project Aimed At Reducing 30-Day Hospital Readmissions For Patients With Congestive Heart Failure (Chf) Through Checklist Implementation, Gary Gutierrez
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Abstract
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) remains a leading cause of preventable 30-day hospital readmissions,
especially in outpatient and transitional care settings. This quality improvement (QI) initiative was
launched within a private internal medicine practice in Essex County, New Jersey, to address this issue
by implementing a standardized CHF management checklist. The checklist focused on four key
components: (a) comprehensive medication reconciliation, (b) tailored patient education, (c) timely
follow-up appointments, and (d) improved interdisciplinary communication. By integrating evidence-
based practices into a structured workflow, the QI project aimed to improve care coordination,
empower patients to manage their condition, and reduce preventable …
The Impact Of Social Factors On Vagally Mediated Parasympathetic Activity, Andrew Scot Proctor
The Impact Of Social Factors On Vagally Mediated Parasympathetic Activity, Andrew Scot Proctor
Theses and Dissertations
Loneliness and social disconnection are recognized risk factors for morbidity and mortality, yet the psychophysiological pathways remain contested. This dissertation examines how social factors relate to vagally mediated parasympathetic activity indexed by heart rate variability (HRV) and tests whether conversational interventions with a human or a large-language-model (LLM)-based companion can acutely reduce loneliness and enhance connection. Across two university sites (BYU, UCSD), N=297 participants (18-27 years) were randomized to (a) a reciprocal self-disclosure conversation with a trained human confederate, (b) a parallel, vocalized LLM chatbot conversation, or (c) a non-social, vocal reading control. Resting HRV (RMSSD, SDNN, HF-HRV) was recorded …

Birth defects are associated with increased cancer risk in the general pediatric population, yet their impact on leukemia risk in children with Down syndrome (DS) remains uncertain. We assessed this using data from 26,660 children with DS in the Genetic Overlap Between Anomalies and Cancer in Kids Registry Linkage Study. Among them, 71.9% had at least one major birth defect, predominantly involving the cardiac (64.2%), musculoskeletal (21%), and gastrointestinal systems (6.8%). The cumulative incidence of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) was comparable in children with and without co-occurring defects. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) for ALL and …

Student Publications
Atypical spindle cell/pleomorphic lipomatous tumor (ASPLT) is a recently recognized benign adipocytic neoplasm, distinguished by specific histopathological and immunohistochemical features. Although traditionally classified as a tumor of the limbs and limb girdles, emerging evidence suggests a broader anatomic distribution. A systematic review of the literature was conducted using PubMed to identify ASPLT case reports published within the past decade. Cases were included if they had a confirmed ASPLT diagnosis, while reports describing unrelated neoplasms or limited by language barriers were excluded. Thirteen cases met the inclusion criteria. Data on patient demographics, tumor characteristics, immunohistochemical profiles, and diagnostic methodologies were extracted …

And Then There Were Two: Navigating Library Services Through Institutional Change, Joni Addis
South Carolina Libraries
Based on an SCLA conference presentation, this article reflects on one small academic library’s journey through university-wide rightsizing and the impact it had on library services. The loss of positions necessitated across-the-board changes in the division of responsibilities and library operations. In the current climate of higher education in the United States, library staff at other institutions should prepare now for possible staffing challenges in the future. Practical takeaways learned through navigating institutional change are discussed, along with an action plan for library administrators and leaders.

UB Journal for Humanities
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are increasingly used in various fields, including the translation of signs within linguistic landscapes. This field-based study investigates the performance of AI tools, namely, Google Gemini and DeepSeek, in translating culture-specific terms (CSTs). To this end, Arabic monolingual signs at tourist sites in Aseer region in Saudi Arabia were documented and a comparative content analysis approach was employed to evaluate the accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and contextual relevance of the AI-generated translations. These translations were then compared to human translations using the same criteria designed for independent human evaluation. The findings indicated that Gemini consistently outperformed DeepSeek …
Filling In The Gaps: How The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Can Enhance Protections For H-1b Visa Holders, Mahi Patel
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
H-1B Specialty Occupations Visas allow numerous foreign nationals to obtain a pathway for entry into the United States through their hard-earned efforts and specialized skills. After meeting stringent requirements and completing complex processes, holders of H-1B visas may begin working in America. Unfortunately, when these individuals come to the land of opportunity, they encounter a harsh reality of employment: the incessant discriminatory abuse of H-1B visa holders by their employers. H-1B employees endure severe working conditions, long hours, unattainable deadlines, wage disparities, and racial biases as they navigate an unknown nation. Employers tend to exploit H-1B workers because these visa …

Disclosures, Disclaimers, And Disinformation Advertising, Areeb Asif
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
Every regular internet user in the United States has been exposed to fake news at some point. Most of them, if not all, would agree that this problem needs a solution. Nevertheless, even as fake news has taken on unforeseen prominence in recent years, very little concrete action has been taken to curb its impact on American society. Some scholars have chalked this up to the Supreme Court’s expansive conception of the First Amendment, which makes it incredibly challenging to regulate political speech. Others posit that the problem is Section 230, which allows platforms to profit from fake news without …
Acute Effects Of Multi-Joint Eccentric Exercise On Lower-Extremity Muscle Activation Measured During Land And Water Walking, Brayden Worley, Brennan J. Thompson, Jon Carey, Talin Louder
Acute Effects Of Multi-Joint Eccentric Exercise On Lower-Extremity Muscle Activation Measured During Land And Water Walking, Brayden Worley, Brennan J. Thompson, Jon Carey, Talin Louder
Kinesiology and Health Science Student Research
Falls are a leading cause of injury and loss of independence in older adults, often linked to deficits in lower-limb muscle function and gait mechanics. Eccentric exercise can improve muscular resilience, while aquatic walking offers a safe, supportive environment to retrain gait; however, little is known about how these modalities interact at the neuromuscular level. This study compared lower-limb muscle activation during gait on land and in water, before and after an acute bout of eccentric exercise, in healthy young adults. Surface electromyography was collected from the tibialis anterior (TA), gastrocnemius medialis (GM), vastus lateralis (VL), and biceps femoris (BF) …

Personal Healthcare Networks: Integrative Review Of Patient-Centered Social Network Analysis Studies, Tyler Gaedecke, Sarah Harkins, Walter Bockting, Kasey Jackman
Biennial Convention (CONV)
Background: Social network analysis is an interdisciplinary social science methodology used to investigate relationships between individuals, communities, and systems. In health research, it has often been used to research interpersonal dynamics on healthcare teams. However, it is infrequently applied to the patient perspective of those teams. One kind of social network analysis, the “personal” network, collects data based on one’s own perception of their connections and relationships. This methodology may be useful to gain the patient’s perspective on accessing healthcare services.
Purpose: To describe and evaluate empirical research using social network approaches to capture the patient perspective about healthcare teams’ …

The Chemistry of Color: A Comparative Analysis of Natural and Synthetic Dyes in Textile Application examines how color functions at the intersection of chemistry, culture, and environmental responsibility. This project traces the evolution of dyeing from ancient natural pigment traditions, rooted in ecological knowledge, agricultural practices, and cultural identity, to the industrial rise of synthetic dyes, whose laboratory precision enabled unprecedented consistency, brightness, and global textile expansion. Through experimental swatch analysis, the study compares the behavior of natural dyes derived from plants and food sources with modern fiber-reactive and synthetic dye classes on a range of fibers including cotton, bamboo …
Tonight’S Top Story: Analyzing English And Spanish-Language National And Local Newscasts For Content Differences, Esteban N. Serrano
Tonight’S Top Story: Analyzing English And Spanish-Language National And Local Newscasts For Content Differences, Esteban N. Serrano
Honors Program Theses and Research Projects
Spanish-language media alongside its equivalent English-language counterpart, assumingly operate with reporting facts truthfully. However, no studies have compared the accuracy of equitable reporting between English and Spanish-language news, particularly television newscasts. Limited existing research claims that differences, such as the structure of news stories and their placement in a broadcast, may skew a narrative for those who prefer to absorb Spanish-language news in comparison to those who absorb English-language news. In this study, through use of mixed methods, U.S. market’s English and Spanish broadcast news-affiliated stations are examined to draw conclusions on whether or not there are differences in news …
