Shattering The Silence: The Path To Maternal Equity In Texas, Karah Renfroe
Shattering The Silence: The Path To Maternal Equity In Texas, Karah Renfroe
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
The Black maternal mortality crisis reflects the persistence of institutionalized racism embedded in the U.S. healthcare system. In Texas, Black women account for just 11% of births yet represent 31% of maternal deaths—a mortality rate more than twice that of their white counterparts. This staggering disparity has persisted, even as statewide initiatives have improved maternal outcomes for non-Black women. This Comment situates the current crisis within a broader historical continuum: from the coerced medical experimentation on enslaved Black women by figures such as J. Marion Sims, through the codified racism of the Jim Crow era, to present-day inequities ingrained in …

Texas Black Maternal Mortality Crisis: A Spotlight On The Texas Legislature’S Alternatives To Abortion Program, Camille Tealer-Misage
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
Texas leads the nation in maternal mortality and morbidity which intersects with high uninsured rates, abortion bans, and legislative policies promoting medical misinformation. Texas’ legislatively codified Alternatives to Abortion Program allocates tens of millions of dollars per year to crisis pregnancy centers and non-profits with the goal of deterring women from seeking abortions. These clinics do not have to hire medical professionals or obtain licensing for the pregnancy-related services provided to clients. Crisis pregnancy centers do not have to provide accurate medical information or social services to the thousands of people who seek care in a state with increasingly limited …

The Evil Historical Twin: How The Requirement Of A Historical Analogy Could Result In Further Discrimination In The Law, Bryanna Mall
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
In 2024, the Supreme Court decided the case of United States v. Rahimi. The Court, unpersuaded by Rahimi’s objection regarding federal law which prohibited an individual subject to a domestic violence restraining order from possessing a firearm, decided the restriction was constitutional. While the holding of this case represents a win for survivors of domestic violence, the legal reasoning plants itself of flimsy concepts of history. The Court utilized a historical analysis test and looked to precedent rooted in social customs, legislation, and court holdings. The first major issue of this test is the dueling interpretation between a historical …

Pavements And The Urban Heat Island Effect: A Network Analysis Of Research Trends And Knowledge Structure, Fouzieh Rouzmehr, Saman Jamshidi
Architecture Faculty Research
The urban heat island (UHI) effect is one of the most pressing challenges associated with rapid urbanization. It arises primarily from the replacement of natural vegetation with impervious surfaces, alterations in surface energy balance, and heat emissions from human activity. Mitigating these drivers has become a global priority, particularly in fast-growing cities. Pavements play a central role in UHI intensification due to their large surface coverage, low albedo, and capacity to retain heat. This study adopts a bibliometric approach to systematically map the knowledge structure and research trends in pavement-related UHI studies. A dataset of 834 publications from Web of …

The morphology of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), characterized by central sheets and peripheral tubules, is controlled by membrane-shaping proteins. However, the role of lipids in ER morphogenesis remains elusive, despite the ER being the major site for lipid synthesis. Here, by examining the role of eighteen phosphatidic acid (PA)-generating enzymes in ER morphology, we identify lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase 2 (AGPAT2) as a critical factor in mouse and human cells. AGPAT2 produces PA in the glycerophospholipid/triacylglycerol biosynthesis pathway, and its mutations cause congenital generalized lipodystrophy. We find that AGPAT2-generated PA drives ER tubulation through gene knockout, 3D structural analysis by FIB-SEM, …

Mutations in the tumor suppressor gene TP53 have been identified in breast cancer-associated fibroblasts and are associated with poor patient prognosis. However, the functional impact of fibroblastic mutant p53 on breast cancer development remains unclear. To investigate this, we compared female mice harboring HER2-driven mammary tumors with a fibroblast-specific Trp53 mutation (NP) to those with wild-type fibroblastic Trp53 (N). NP mice exhibited significantly shorter median tumor-free survival than N mice. RNA sequencing of NP and N tumors and mammary glands revealed numerous differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between tumors and the corresponding glands in both genotypes. Notably, the NP tumors showed …

Escalated doses of radiotherapy associate with improved local control and overall survival (OS) in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA), but personalization remains limited because conventional size-based CT criteria correlate poorly with outcomes. We hypothesized that quantitative enhancement measurements would better predict clinical outcomes and guide individualized RT optimization. In a retrospective cohort of 154 patients, we analyzed pre- and post-RT CT scans using quantitative European Association for Study of Liver (qEASL) to derive viable tumor volumes, comparing enhancement-based metrics with size-based RECIST and linking them to outcomes via survival and mathematical modeling. Change in enhancement volume was strongly associated with OS after …

The study investigates the sex-specific effects of the pluripotency factor OCT4 deficiency in endothelial cells (ECs) on angiogenesis. OCT4 is known for its role in embryonic stem cells, but we recently found that it plays a protective role in ECs during atherosclerosis. Herein, we utilized cultured mouse aortic ECs (MAECs) and several in vivo models, including skin wounding, melanoma tumor implantation, and hindlimb ischemia, to explore the role of OCT4 in angiogenesis in both male and female mice. Our findings revealed significant sexual dimorphism in wild type mice, along with sex differences in responses to OCT4 deficiency across all three …

INTRODUCTION: Lamotrigine (LTG) and Levetiracetam (LEV) are anti-seizure medications (ASMs) widely used for treatment of women with epilepsy (WWE) of childbearing age due to low teratogenic potential. Physiological changes during gestation results in enhanced clearance. Drug level monitoring and frequent dose adjustments are required to avoid decline in serum levels and compromised seizure control. Postpartum, physiological changes reverse and ASM clearance trends back to pre-pregnancy rate. Rapid metabolic changes make drug level monitoring and dose adjustments challenging. A delay in dose decrement could result in toxicity. The optimal postpartum dose reduction rate hasn't been established.
METHODS: We retrospectively examined medical …

BACKGROUND: Pharmacy deserts, or areas lacking convenient access to pharmacies, can limit access to medications and reduce adherence. In U.S. cities, pharmacy deserts are disproportionately concentrated in racial/ethnic minority and low-income neighborhoods. This study examined the demographics and spatial distribution of pharmacy deserts in St. Louis City, Missouri, and their associations with sociodemographic and healthcare access determinants.
METHODS: Pharmacy deserts were defined as census tract block groups whose centroids were more than 1 mile from a pharmacy, or more than a half mile and located within a tract where at least 20% of households lacked vehicle access. Demographic and socioeconomic …

Peritoneal surface malignancies (PSMs) remain a therapeutic challenge, particularly in patients with unresectable disease who cannot benefit from cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. The Talimogene Laherparepvec for the Treatment of Peritoneal Surface Malignancies (TEMPO) trial (NCT03663712) is the first phase 1, multicenter, open-label study to evaluate intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of talimogene laherparepvec (T-VEC), an FDA-approved oncolytic virus, in this setting. Nineteen patients with unresectable PSMs from appendiceal, ovarian, small bowel, and peritoneal carcinomas were enrolled; 18 received treatment across three escalating dose cohorts (4 × 10-4×10 PFU). The primary endpoint was safety and tolerability, with secondary endpoints assessing viral …

There’S Cardio And There’S Cardio: How Fitness And Sexual Attitudes Relate To Needs For Approval And Loneliness, Isaac Robertson
Honors College Theses
This study looked to collectively investigate the relationships of both fitness/sexual activity attitudes with a need for social approval, while also determining if biological sex could play a role in either of these relationships. Additionally, loneliness and mental well-being were examined with the aforementioned variables. Predominantly white (82.5%) females (75%) data were analyzed after completing an online survey (N = 40). Significant relationships were found between fitness attitudes and a need for social approval in women only (r (28) = -.50, p = .005) and between sexual activity attitudes and a need for social approval in men only (r (8) …
