Tracing The "Growth Of The Poet's Mind" In The 1850 Version Of The Prelude, Karen F. King Dec 2025

Tracing The "Growth Of The Poet's Mind" In The 1850 Version Of The Prelude, Karen F. King

Masters Theses

This work compares the 1805 and 1850 versions of William Wordsworth's autobiographical epic The Prelude to reveal that the revisions he made evidence his poetic growth. Critical scholarship has long discussed the poet's revisional habits, offering various rationales for his motivation and often dogmatically choosing a preferred version based on those assumptions. This paper first addresses these perspectives, then examines the structural details of Wordsworth's revisions through analysis of significant events in the poet's life that he relates in the epic, his "spots of time". Finally, I discuss the role of imagination as an influencer on the poet's growth. Although …

Sustainability Without Sacrifice: Rethinking Convenient Eating For Young Professionals, Teresa E. Michael Dec 2025

Sustainability Without Sacrifice: Rethinking Convenient Eating For Young Professionals, Teresa E. Michael

Masters Theses

Young professionals want to eat more sustainably– but life gets in the way. Between long hours, limited budgets, and an overwhelming stream of content, sustainable choices often fall apart in favor of convenience. This research explores that gap between values and behavior, asking: How do young adults actually make food decisions, and how can we help those decisions become more sustainable without demanding perfection? To answer that, I grounded my work in a literature review focused on food literacy, convenience culture, digital media, and behavioral psychology. I also conducted three case studies of food-tech companies (Too Good To Go, Misfits …

Archetypes: Angels Of Literary Art; Demons Of Science, Ronald A. Davidson Dec 2025

Archetypes: Angels Of Literary Art; Demons Of Science, Ronald A. Davidson

Masters Theses

This Master of Fine Arts Creative Writing thesis focuses on archetypal literary theory and criticism and their application to Bushido of the Cur, a novella by Ronald A. Davidson. The critical analysis will evaluate the characters in the novella and identify how their roles in the story align with everyday human experiences, suggesting the existence of a literary collective unconscious. The creative manuscript, Bushido of the Cur, exploits the craft of character development to present a storyline that feels authentic, even though it is a work of historical fiction in the western noir genre. The goal of the manuscript is …

Understanding Barriers To High School Teen Self-Expression, Connection & Inclusion., Susana Estes Dec 2025

Understanding Barriers To High School Teen Self-Expression, Connection & Inclusion., Susana Estes

Masters Theses

This thesis investigates the invisible barriers that prevent high school students from expressing their identities, forming meaningful connections, and experiencing a sense of belonging within school environments. Drawing on research in adolescent development, school climate, psychology of belonging, and participatory design, the study identifies structural, emotional, and social factors that contribute to student disconnection. Through a review of key theorists and three case studies, the research reveals that teens need structured opportunities for safe self-expression, visible affirmation of their identities, and accessible spaces for reflective interaction. In response, this thesis presents a research-informed interactive design solution: a two-part installation titled …

The Ultra Dilemma: Understanding The Impact Of Ultra-Processed Food, Cassia Elizabeth Brenning Dec 2025

The Ultra Dilemma: Understanding The Impact Of Ultra-Processed Food, Cassia Elizabeth Brenning

Masters Theses

Ultra-processed food dominates the market, making up an estimated 73% of the national food supply and costing 52% less than healthier, minimally- processed alternatives (Ravandi et al). With such a large supply, there is a great demand to sell these products to consumers. Major food corporations rely on misleading labels, heavy marketing, and industry-funded research to manipulate consumers into buying more of their products. While these products are cheap, quick, convenient, and delicious, they are not components of a healthy diet.

This thesis argues that the best way to tackle the issue of ultra-processed food is by redirecting focus from …

Is Relationship Satisfaction A Personal Trait?, Alyssa Brown Dec 2025

Is Relationship Satisfaction A Personal Trait?, Alyssa Brown

Theses and Dissertations

We explored individual differences in relationship satisfaction. We hypothesized a stable proportion of relationship satisfaction would be explained by individual differences. In Study 1 (N = 1619), individual differences accounted for 41% of the variance in ratings for relationship satisfaction and 22% for ratings of dedication. In Study 2, we attempted to model this unique variance using a Correlated Traits Correlated Methods Confirmatory Factor Analysis approach, then predict it using established traits from previous literature. Although our initial model had to be revised, our final exploratory model suggested individual relationship satisfaction was multifaceted: both dependent upon relationship type and possessing …

Green Synthesis Of And Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Of (2z)-2-[(4-Fluorophenyl)Methylidene]-1-Benzofuran-3-One, Rod Albert C. Olofernes Dec 2025

Green Synthesis Of And Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Of (2z)-2-[(4-Fluorophenyl)Methylidene]-1-Benzofuran-3-One, Rod Albert C. Olofernes

Honors Theses

Antimicrobial resistance is a global health challenge, rendering once-effective antibiotics less potent or entirely ineffective. In response, there is increasing interest in developing antimicrobial agents through environmentally sustainable methods. In this study, a fluorinated aurone derivative, (2Z)-2-[(4-fluorophenyl)methylidene]-1-benzofuran-3-one, was synthesized using a green Knoevenagel condensation approach. Eco-friendly catalysts were employed to minimize environmental impact and avoid hazardous byproducts. Product formation was confirmed to avoid wasting resources. The compound was evaluated for antimicrobial properties using a Kirby-Bauer plate, but did not demonstrate consistent or significant antimicrobial activity, therefore lacking promise as a standalone antibiotic.

Social Media: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Kyung-Ah Judy Chang Dec 2025

Social Media: The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly, Kyung-Ah Judy Chang

ETD Collection

As social media use is increasingly prevalent, many studies have examined the effects of social media breaks. However, little is known about the factors that make it difficult for people to stay off social media during a break. The present study aimed to better understand the psychological effects of a one-week social media break and the factors associated with lapses, or “cheating” by going back onto social media, during the break. Forty-two participants completed baseline questionnaires and daily surveys assessing psychological states, including loneliness, fear of missing out (FOMO), positive and negative affect, boredom, craving, and mental health symptoms. Participants …

Investing In Youths And Their Families: A Proposal For Grant Funding To Expand Mental Health Services At A Community-Based Center, Eliana M. Lopez

ETD Collection

Mental health services across the United States remain inequitably distributed, leaving under-resourced communities with limited access to essential services (Breslau et al., 2022). These disparities persist even in large metropolitan areas like New York City (NYC), with the Bronx, one of the city’s most historically marginalized and under-resourced borough, being especially vulnerable to disparities in mental health care (Breslau et al., 2022). The Family Advocacy Program (FAP), a community-based center part of the Department of Pediatrics at Jacobi Medical Center (JMC), is presently in need of additional financial resources to further expand their services to meet the rising mental health …

Flawed Design And Selection Bias In Critical Care Randomized Controlled Trials (Rcts): The Patient Safety Risk Of The "Rct Mimic"., Lawrence A Lynn

Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles

Over three decades, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for critical care syndromes such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), sepsis, and community acquired pneumonia (CAP) have repeatedly produced non-reproducible results, at times leading to high-impact reversals of global protocols when later studies revealed harm. These trials enroll patients using expert-derived threshold sets intended to define the syndrome. This analytic review presents the first historical and formal methodological review and mathematical analysis of such RCT using causal symbolic modeling (cSM), directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), and do-calculus. The review includes landmark publications, task-force threshold sets, and case examples, including the 2025 REMAP-CAP corticosteroid …

Free Will, Responsibility, And The Corporation: A Critique Of Corporate Criminal Liability, Declan C. Lawson

William & Mary Law Review Online

Part I of this Note will provide background on the relationship between free will and criminal liability and discuss the extant theories underpinning corporate criminal liability. Part II will examine the shortcomings of those theories. Part III will argue for a free will-based approach for apportioning blame for corporate criminal conduct. Such an approach is both theoretically and practically justified.

This abstract was taken from the author's introduction.

Comparison Of Cost, Accessibility, Speed, And Efficiency Of Modern Microbial Detection Methods For Wastewater Surveillance And Their Potential Benefits In Low-Resource Settings, Gloria Rodriguez, Davida Smyth Dec 2025

Comparison Of Cost, Accessibility, Speed, And Efficiency Of Modern Microbial Detection Methods For Wastewater Surveillance And Their Potential Benefits In Low-Resource Settings, Gloria Rodriguez, Davida Smyth

Masters Theses (Archived)

During the COVID-19 pandemic, wastewater surveillance helped predict the emergence of several waves of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, sometimes before clinical detection, alerting public health authorities to investigate. As human fecal material can contain the nucleic acids of both DNA- and RNA-based pathogens, new methods isolating total nucleic acid (TNA) can be used to detect a wider variety of pathogens and genetic targets. Wastewater Surveillance is faster, cost effective and scalable. This study compared three commercially available TNA extraction kits: Promega Rapid Capture Beads (Rapid), Maxwell RSC Enviro Total Nucleic Acid (Vacuum), and Nanotrap® Microbiome A and B Enviro Water Protocol …

The Impact Of Restorative Justice On Student Behavior, Marisol Gonzalez Dec 2025

The Impact Of Restorative Justice On Student Behavior, Marisol Gonzalez

Masters Theses (Archived)

This thesis critically examines the effects of Restorative Justice practices on student behavior within a predominantly Latinx charter school context. The research aims to identify the specific behaviors affected by the implementation of Restorative Justice frameworks. Utilizing a mixed-methods methodology, the study triangulates qualitative data from comprehensive staff interviews with quantitative analyses of incident referral records. The findings indicate a substantial enhancement in students’ sense of responsibility and emotional intelligence, and overall suspension rates decreased. These outcomes underscore the need for sustained professional development and institutional support to enhance the efficacy and sustainability of Restorative Justice initiatives in educational settings.

Qualitative analysis reinforces these findings through five intersecting themes: personal growth, representation, engagement and opportunities, empowerment, and challenges. Guided by Critical Race Theory, LatCrit, and Chicanx Studies, the research demonstrates that ethnic studies courses …

The Growing Teacher Shortage, Heather L. Chessher Dec 2025

The Growing Teacher Shortage, Heather L. Chessher

Masters Theses (Archived)

Even before the global pandemic, but especially after COVID-19, the teacher retention numbers have been on the decline and the number of teachers who express teacher burnout has steadily risen. Teachers continue to face behavioral issues, work overload, and high student achievement expectations. Teaching is a stressful, intensive, and complex job that requires teachers to facilitate and support students’ personal growth and enable school performance (Johnson et al., 2014). Years of overload and high occupational stress often send teachers to early retirement and sometimes into different professional fields. Through a qualitative case study approach, this research explores the reasons some …
