Cultural Mistrust Framework Of Mental Help-Seeking And Internalized Model Minority Myth, Jin Zhao
Dissertations - ALL
Objective: Cultural mistrust can serve as an intermediary variable indirectly facilitating the association between racial microaggressions and unfavorable mental help-seeking attitudes. This study sought to broaden the cultural mistrust framework’s applicability to Asian and Asian American college students by (1) replicating the framework using a national multi-campus sample and (2) integrating internalized model minority myth (i.e., unrestricted mobility and achievement orientation) via a conditional process approach. Methods: This study used cross-sectional data from a national sample of Asian and Asian American college students (N = 180, Mage = 21.47 [SD=1.84]). Path models estimated indirect and direct associations, as well as …
Computationally Efficient Methods For Calculation Of Light-Matter Interaction In Large Semiconductor Quantum Dots, Chandler Martin
Computationally Efficient Methods For Calculation Of Light-Matter Interaction In Large Semiconductor Quantum Dots, Chandler Martin
Dissertations - ALL
Quantum dots are a class of materials in the nanometer scale that have unique optical and electronic properties due to the quantum confinement effect. Traditional electronic structure computational techniques used for calculating these properties fall to scalability issues as the size of the quantum dot increases, or introduce significant errors into the final result. This makes using computational methods to predict new materials, or verify properties of existing materials, challenging to use for experimental applications of quantum dots. This gap between experiment and computation is due to large basis sets, expensive integrals, and storage and manipulation of tensors that grow …

Background: Neonatal germinal matrix hemorrhage-intraventricular hemorrhage and subsequent post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH) is a leading cause of neurologic morbidity and mortality in preterm infants. Preclinical models of PHH have implicated hemoglobin and iron-mediated cellular injury in the pathogenesis of PHH, but have typically demonstrated a phenotype characterized by mild to moderate ventriculomegaly – the equivalent of which may not even require intervention in the human condition. We sought to establish a preclinical model of severe IVH that recapitulates the severity of the hydrocephalus phenotype requiring neurosurgical intervention and to determine the causal blood degradation product resulting in severe hydrocephalus following preterm …

Revisiting The Quiet Life Hypothesis In The Indonesian Banking Industry, Samuel Sumartoyo, Chaikal Nuryakin
Revisiting The Quiet Life Hypothesis In The Indonesian Banking Industry, Samuel Sumartoyo, Chaikal Nuryakin
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This study explores the Quiet Life Hypothesis (QLH) in different bank groups based on market-dominant and state ownership. The instrumental-variable regression results confirm the quiet life hypothesis at the industry level. At the group level, there is no different tendency to act quiet life between the dominant and non-dominant banks. On the other hand, the State-Owned Banks (SOBs) show a more potent act of quiet life than private banks. While the results for SOB were backed by theory and previous empirical studies, they raised the question of why the private banks conduct such “lazy” behavior.

The Industrial Revolution, along with the rapid increase in population, has significantly contributed to the intensification of environmental challenges, mostly the contamination of aquatic ecosystems by heavy metals. One metal that is dangerous for the environment and human health is copper (Cu). The threshold for Cu(II) allowed in water is 0.2 mg L–1. One method to overcome this metal ion pollution is by biosorption using biological material adsorbents. Matoa shell, utilized as a biosorbent, has demonstrated its ability to effectively bind heavy metal ions through its functional groups, which facilitate the formation of complexes with these ions. Biosorbent …

Low birth weight (LBW) remains a major public health concern in low-resource and rural settings due to its strong association with neonatal morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to identify maternal determinants associated with LBW in a rural hospital in Indonesia. A retrospective cross-sectional review was conducted on 179 singleton deliveries between January 1st and December 31st, 2024, at Alimuddin Umar General Hospital. Maternal age, parity, anemia, preeclampsia, and gestational age at delivery were obtained from medical records and analyzed using bivariate and multivariate methods. Bivariate analysis showed that preterm birth (p < 0.001) and preeclampsia (p < 0.05) were significantly associated with LBW, whereas maternal age, parity, and anemia showed no significant associations. When adjusted for potential confounders in the multivariate analyses, both preeclampsia (p = 0.019; OR = 4.61; 95% CI: 1.29–16.55) and preterm birth (p < 0.001; OR = 14.60; 95% CI: 5.52–38.57) remained independent predictors of LBW. These findings suggest that preeclampsia and preterm birth are the main contributors to LBW in this setting. Strengthening antenatal care, particularly early detection and management of preeclampsia and prevention of preterm birth, may reduce the burden of LBW. Further studies including nutritional, socioeconomic, and antenatal care variables are recommended to identify independent risk factors more comprehensively.

The prevalent use of smartphones has raised significant concerns regarding smartphone addiction among university students. This addiction can lead to a range of psychological problems, which may ultimately affect their academic performance and overall well-being. Engaging in exercise has been linked to improved mental well-being, mainly by regulating endorphin levels, which can help reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have become effective strategies for tackling different psychological challenges. Evidence indicates that mindfulness practices can significantly decrease stress, anxiety, and depression levels. Combining exercise with mindfulness (EM) techniques can boost their overall effectiveness and provide additional mental health …

This clinical trial investigated the effects of adding a Bacillus-based probiotic to the lactation diet of sows (without in-feed antibiotics) on maternal and piglet outcomes. A total of 109 Landrace × Yorkshire sows (parity 1–7) were assigned to either a control group (n = 61) or a treatment group (n = 48) receiving Bacillus subtilis – 541 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens – 516. Piglets in the treatment group also received the probiotics via creep feed from day 3 until weaning. Blood samples were collected within 12 h after farrowing to assess serum immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, and IgM) and malondialdehyde (MDA) …

The objectives of this study were to quantify temporal changes in prostatic volume and serum CPSE concentrations in dogs with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (n = 6) following surgical castration, and to evaluate the potential of CPSE as a biomarker for monitoring prostatic regression. Prostatic volume was determined by transabdominal ultrasonography, and serum CPSE concentrations were measured at baseline (Week 0) and at Weeks 1, 2, and 4 postcastration. The mean (±SE) prostatic volume before castration was 11.4 ± 1.9 cm3 and decreased significantly to 6.3±1.1 cm3 by Week 1 (P < 0.001), representing a reduction to approximately 56% of the baseline value. Smaller progressive declines were observed at subsequent time points up to Week 4 (P > 0.05). In parallel, serum CPSE concentrations dropped …
