Engineering Plga Nanoparticle Size To Modulate Immune Responses After Spinal Cord Injury, Daniel J. Kolpek
Engineering Plga Nanoparticle Size To Modulate Immune Responses After Spinal Cord Injury, Daniel J. Kolpek
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Spinal cord injury is a severe and debilitating condition that often results in lifelong complications, including paralysis. Many of these chronic outcomes are driven by a sustained inflammatory response at the injury site, which limits tissue regeneration and functional recovery. As a result, therapeutic strategies that modulate this immune response have gained significant interest. Polymer based nanoparticle therapies have emerged as a promising approach due to their ability to interact with and influence immune cell behavior. Importantly, the physicochemical properties of nanoparticles can be precisely tuned to optimize these effects. Among these properties, size has been shown to influence key …

The Evolution Of The Whittier State School From Reform To Control, Manuella Zammit
The Evolution Of The Whittier State School From Reform To Control, Manuella Zammit
Whittier City & College Historical Research
This paper examines the transformation of the Whittier State School from its founding in 1891 as a Quaker inspired reform institution into a punitive juvenile detention facility under the California Youth Authority. Through analysis of primary sources including The Sentinel student newspaper, The Journal of Delinquency, psychological studies, and modern reports, this study traces how the school's philosophy shifted across three distinct eras. The first era (1890s to 1912) emphasized moral rescue through vocational training, academic instruction, and structured communal life rooted in Quaker ideals of rehabilitation over punishment. The second era (1912 to 1927) witnessed the rise of …

Exploring The Synergy Between Very Large Transformer And Lstm Models For Effective Medical Captioning From Videos To Text: The Impact Of Captioning In Healthcare, R. V. Aswiga, Moin Ahmed Zahir
Data Science Faculty Publications
In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, the demand for accurate and contextually relevant subtitles for image and video content, particularly in the medical domain, is increasingly critical. Despite the proliferation of visual data across various platforms, existing captioning systems often struggle due to variations in visual settings, complex temporal relationships, and nuanced semantics. Additionally, challenges such as limited datasets, privacy issues, and specialized annotation requirements make medical image captioning particularly difficult. To tackle these challenges, we investigate cutting-edge deep learning methodologies, specifically Transfer Learning and Transformer models, through a comparative analysis. Specifically, we focus on Transfer Learning through the MedVisionCapturer …
Exploring The Impact Of Group Art Therapy On Sense Of Belonging In Early Adolescents: A Mixed Methods Study, Carol Chu
Art Therapy | Master's Theses
During adolescence, peer relationships strongly influence development and emotional well-being. In addition, Adlerian theory emphasizes social interest and the importance of connectedness within the social environment. This mixed methods study explores the impact of a four-session group art therapy intervention in a middle school setting on young adolescents’ sense of belonging. Seven students in the seventh and eighth grade from a public middle school in Sacramento County participated in the study. Quantitative data were collected at two time points in the study, before and after the intervention, using the Sense of Belonging Scale (SBS). All seven participants demonstrated an increase …
Blue Spring (2001):, George Dibble
Blue Spring (2001):, George Dibble
BYU Asian Studies Student Journal
“Congratulations on your graduation,” broadcasts on the upper secondary school’s PA system—the first sound in the film Blue Spring (2001), directed by Toshiaki Toyoda—yet none of the students we follow for the next 83 minutes have anything to graduate for. Like a chick denied egg-shell breakage, stuck in its hard world, the film-focused boys are told to live. But where, and how? Blue Spring exists between the graffiti laden walls of high school where classes are secondary to student politics and fights are as common as words.
Annoyances lead to murders. Money is extorted. Teachers are harassed. The first image …

Tradition Without Text?, Daniel B. Rice
Tradition Without Text?, Daniel B. Rice

This Essay critiques the Supreme Court’s emerging “history and tradition” methodology, as articulated in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, arguing that its reliance on affirmative textual recognition in historical positive law fundamentally misrepresents the nature of American liberty traditions. By insisting that unenumerated rights are constitutionally cognizable only when earlier legal sources explicitly identified them as rights, the Court adopts a truncated evidentiary framework that privileges written enactments while disregarding lived experience, social practice, and the normative assumptions that shaped earlier understandings of permissible state power. The result, the Essay contends, is a mechanized and impoverished account of …
A First Amendment Right To Know, David S. Ardia
A First Amendment Right To Know, David S. Ardia
Faculty Publications
This Article tackles an increasingly important question: Can police round up people on American streets and keep secret the names of those they detain without violating the First Amendment? Alarmingly, the government made this very argument in the summer of 2020 when it sought to break up Black Lives Matter protests occurring in cities across the country. Based in part on a Supreme Court decision from the 1970s involving access to prisons, the government argued that the First Amendment imposes no constraints on government secrecy. If it is true that the government can shield its exercise of police power from …
Teachers’ Perceptions Of Artificial Intelligence And Its Impact On Student Learning, Ranging From Understanding, Originality, Motivation, Problem-Solving, And Resilience, Joseph Whelan
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming education, challenging traditional notions of how learning should be structured in schools. Although research on educational AI remains limited, its influence on student learning is already evident. On a daily basis, educators observe the impact artificial intelligence has on five specific areas of student learning: being, understanding, originality, motivation, problem-solving. and resilience. Using a mixed-methods approach, with descriptive research using surveys with free-response questions, the study aimed to examine how the five student characteristics are affected in the classroom daily through the integration of artificial intelligence into student learning. Teachers participated in a survey …

Hope As Affect: Engaging With Crisis And Collapse Through Collaborative Performance Making, Bronte Frances
Theses : Honours
The project is interested in how hope can operate as an affective, embodied force within collaborative performance-making processes. In this specific context it was to see how, where and why the concept of hope was possible in the collaborative making of a new and original full length theatre work that was addressing themes of crisis and collapse. Invoking key theorists – Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone (2022), Donna Haraway (2016), Kathleen Stewart (2007), Jonathan Lear (2006), and Rebecca Solnit (2016) – the research investigated how hope can be consistently enacted. Centred on investigating hope as affect experienced in the present …

21st Century Perspective On The Changing Pattern Of Nerve Injuries From Gunshot Wounds In The U.S., Thomas A. Decoster
21st Century Perspective On The Changing Pattern Of Nerve Injuries From Gunshot Wounds In The U.S., Thomas A. Decoster
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Gunshot wounds (GSWs) with nerve injuries in the 21st century differ significantly from those reported in the 20th century. The vast majority are now low-velocity civilian injuries, in contrast to high-velocity military injuries previously reported. The rate of nerve injury in civilian GSWs is approximately 5%, compared with the 30% reported in military cohorts. However, the most common pattern of nerve injury in the current civilian population is neurotmesis and partial neurotmesis, in contrast to the majority axonotmesis of the military cohorts. In the 20th century, treatment generally consisted of watchful waiting for signs of spontaneous recovery over three months …

Peripheral Nerve Repair And Reconstruction: Current Techniques, Adjuncts, And Emerging Therapies, Niklaus Skipp, Lana Dokic, Christina Wassef, Jazzlyn Gonzalez, Ana Love, Heather Mercer, Deana Mercer
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Peripheral nerve injuries require reconstruction when direct, tension-free repair is not possible. A range of reconstructive strategies are used to restore continuity and promote axonal regeneration, including graft-based reconstruction, nerve transfers, conduit-based repair, supercharged end-to-side augmentation, and emerging regenerative therapies. Autologous interfascicular nerve grafts and vascularized grafts remain established techniques, whereas processed nerve allografts provide a donor-sparing alternative. Nerve transfers are increasingly used for proximal injuries with long regeneration distances, and conduits are an option for gaps shorter than 5 mm. Nerve-wrapping techniques are used to reduce perineural scarring and preserve gliding in complex or revision cases. Emerging adjunctive therapies, …
The Effect Of Institutional Reputation On Clerkship Grades, Jerry Speight Grimes
The Effect Of Institutional Reputation On Clerkship Grades, Jerry Speight Grimes
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Background: Clinical rotation scores have been reported to predict resident performance. However, the reporting of clerkship grades varies widely across institutions. The authors explored the correlation of an institution’s reputation and the percentage of students receiving honors. Methods: During the review of applicants for orthopaedic residency, the percentage of students receiving the highest grade in the surgery and internal medicine clerkships was recorded for each institution. The authors then compared published institutional rankings with the proportion of students awarded honors in these clerkships. Results: One hundred nineteen institutions were reviewed. There was poor correlation between the institutional rankings by U.S. …

Analysis Of Patient Factors That Predict Early Restoration Of Neutral Dorsiflexion After Achilles Tendon Rupture, W. Chad Elliott, Alvin Ouseph, Alexander Abraham, Jerry Speight Grimes
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Background: Achilles Tendon Rupture (ATR) is a common musculoskeletal injury with an increasing incidence in the United States. Early functional rehabilitation is a key component of improving patient outcomes, and restoration of range of motion is a common threshold for progression to strengthening. Neutral ankle dorsiflexion represents an important early milestone in ATR recovery. This study aimed to assess which patient factors were associated with achieving this early rehabilitation milestone. Methods: A retrospective review was performed on 70 patients who sustained ATR and were treated at an academic center. Demographics, baseline characteristics, and common ATR risk factors were collected. The …

Insertion Of An Internal Joint Stabilizer Through A Posterolateral Approach For The Management Of Complex Elbow Instability, Miguel A. Pirela-Cruz, Nikalus Skipp, Ana Love, Deana Mercer, Jazzlyn Gonzalez
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Background: Complex elbow fracture-dislocations represent a substantial surgical challenge. Achieving adequate stability while permitting early postoperative motion is essential to prevent stiffness. The internal joint stabilizer (IJS) has emerged as an alternative to hinged external fixation, providing internal dynamic stabilization with improved patient tolerance and reduced risk of soft-tissue complications. Although the IJS is commonly inserted through a lateral approach, injuries involving multiple anatomical structures may necessitate broader exposure. Purpose: To describe the surgical technique for IJS insertion through a posterolateral approach (PLA) for complex elbow injuries involving multiple anatomical structures. Methods: The PLA provides extensile exposure to the posterior, …

Exploring The Interaction Between Cranial Nerves V And Vii In Chronic Eyelid Myokymia: A Case Report, Karina Miramontes, Adam Walsh, Tomas Tafoya
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Eyelid myokymia involves involuntary contractions of the orbicularis oculi muscle and is commonly associated with stress, fatigue, and craniocervical factors. Emerging evidence suggests that altered trigeminocervical interactions and craniomandibular muscle tension may contribute to symptom persistence; however, the condition remains underrecognized in physical therapy. This report describes a 65-year-old woman with chronic benign eyelid myokymia and cervical pain who completed 12 physical therapy sessions that included suboccipital functional dry needling, temporomandibular soft-tissue mobilization (STM), and cervical stabilization exercises. A reduction in eyelid myokymia was first observed at the fifth visit, coinciding with the initiation of temporomandibular STM. These findings suggest …

Prosthetic Knee Joint Infection Caused By Gemella Morbillorum, Nataly Echevarria-Castro, Shaleen Duhra, Leonor Echevarria
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
Gemella morbillorum is a gram-positive coccus found in the gastrointestinal tract, and is an uncommon cause of human infections, including prosthetic joint infections (PJI). Reported risk factors include immunosuppression, recent gastrointestinal procedures, and poor dental hygiene. This report describes a case of knee PJI caused by G. morbillorum, likely due to hematogenous seeding following a colonoscopy three months earlier. The patient is a 70-year-old man with well-controlled diabetes mellitus who had undergone total knee arthroplasty three years prior. He presented with three weeks of left knee swelling. Synovial fluid culture revealed G. morbillorum. The patient was treated with debridement, antibiotics, …

Arthroscopic Management Of A Loose Body In The Pisotriquetral Joint: A Case Report, Giovanni Chioda, Tomas Holy, Nicholas Newcomb, Nathan Morrell
Western Journal of Orthopaedics
The pisotriquetral joint is the smallest of the four joints comprising the wrist and is a source of ulnar-sided wrist pain. This condyloid joint connects the pisiform to the triquetrum and is supported by several surrounding ligaments. A variety of pathologies may affect the pisotriquetral joint, including the presence of loose bodies. Because of its small size and the inherent difficulty of visualization, the pisotriquetral joint is often overlooked as an independent joint. Techniques for arthroscopic visualization and loose-body removal have previously been described using the 6R and 4-5 portals. In the following case report, the authors describe successful visualization …

Compassion In Crisis: A Study Of Compassion Fatigue Among Nurses Working In The Emergency Department At A Western Australian Metropolitan Tertiary Hospital, Sonu Susamma Sam
Theses
Compassion fatigue (CF) is defined as the emotional depletion caused by ongoing involvement in caring for another individuals experiencing trauma or hardship, pain, distress, and critical incidents. It is characterised by a decline in emotional capacity, reduced ability to empathise, and feelings of helplessness, that could potentially lead to burnout and secondary traumatic stress. While CF affects many healthcare providers including physicians, social service professionals, mental health practitioners, but nursing staff are particularly vulnerable due to their close and continuous engagement with patients.
Compassion fatigue has been extensively examined in oncology, palliative care, and intensive care, where exposure to patient …

Cobalt's Climate Paradox: Global Ambitions For A Greener Future Rely On Blood-Stained Hands, Ashleigh Wootton
Cobalt's Climate Paradox: Global Ambitions For A Greener Future Rely On Blood-Stained Hands, Ashleigh Wootton
Natural Resources Journal
The global effort to mitigate climate change increasingly relies on widespread electrification, with lithium-ion batteries at its core and the key minerals required for their production concentrated in countries uniquely vulnerable to exploitation. Lithium-ion battery production relies heavily on cobalt, a critical mineral primarily sourced from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which supplies approximately 70 percent of the world’s cobalt. As demand for cobalt is projected to rise sharply, the DRC has become indispensable to the global clean energy transition. Cobalt extraction in the DRC is closely linked to severe human rights abuses, including forced labor, child labor, …

Facial Expression With Type Of Eye Opening Associates With Multi-Organ Failure: An Observational Prospective Icu Cohort Study, Talal Ibrahim Mostafa Hagag
Journal of Medicine in Scientific Research
Title Facial expression with the type of eye opening associates with multi-organ failure: an Observational prospective ICU cohort study Background Accurate prognostication in the intensive care unit (ICU) remains a challenging task. Conventional severity scores such as the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) quantify physiological derangement but overlook real-time neurological and affective responsiveness. Behavioral indicators—particularly facial expressivity and eye-opening response—may reflect cortical and brainstem integrity, offering a simple, non-invasive adjunct for bedside mortality prediction. Methods In this single-center, prospective observational study, 210 adult patients in the ICU were assessed within 24 hours of admission. Two blinded …
