Analysis Of Pull-Out Tests For Resin-Grouted Rib Bolts, Khaled Mohamed, Yuting Xue, Dogukan Guner, Alper Kirmaci, Taghi Sherizadeh
Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Resin-grouted rib bolts serve as a crucial means of stabilizing spalling of coal ribs in underground coal mines. A comprehensive investigation into their efficacy was undertaken by a collaborative effort between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST). This study involved pull-out tests of rib bolts in multiple locations, including six coal mines and the NIOSH research mine. A total of seventy-three (73) pull-out tests were conducted for rib bolts installed at different rotation speeds and a wide range of anchorage lengths, ranging from a short encapsulation length of 0.305 …

Fifty Terms Or More: Researching Curriculum Materials Centers, Caitlin Stewart
Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library
Curriculum materials centers (CMCs), or specialized, localized collections of P-12 educational resources to support teacher preparation programs in higher education, are referred to by fifty unique terms in the Directory of Materials Centers and Collection 8th edition. Education Source (Ebsco) and Education Research Index (ProQuest) were searched with all distinct terms as keywords. The number of search results in the controlled search environment were logged, and all search results returned were coded as highly, somewhat, or not definitionally relevant to the established definition of a CMC. Recommendations are given for how to best search for highly relevant CMC literature, …

Bracing The Wobbly “Three-Legged Stool” By Increasing Homeownership Opportunities For Low- And Middle-Income Workers, Regina T. Jefferson
Bracing The Wobbly “Three-Legged Stool” By Increasing Homeownership Opportunities For Low- And Middle-Income Workers, Regina T. Jefferson
Scholarly Articles
Traditionally, the primary sources of retirement income were personal savings, the private retirement system, and Social Security. These three sources have been described metaphorically as the “three-legged stool” of retirement security. In this framework, each leg was viewed as a separate and distinct source of income that provided support throughout a worker’s retirement. Each source presented different and varying degrees of risks that were pooled collectively among the individual, the employer, and the government. Each source also functioned independently of the other two. Thus, the traditional framework of retirement income was thought to be ideal because it balanced and diversified …

Black youth may be even more vulnerable than other youth to admitting to crimes they did not commit in the context of police interrogations. In support, analysis of data from the National Registry of Exonerations indicates that 65% of people who were wrongfully convicted on the basis of false confessions they gave when under 18 years old are Black, whereas only 14% of the U.S. population is Black. In this chapter, I seek to understand the overrepresentation of Black youth in samples of juvenile false confessors by examining the cultural stereotype about Black criminality in relation to both investigators and …

The Indonesian Capital Market Review
The issuance of sukuk has been steadily increasing over time, underscoring its growing significance and the need for further scholarly examination. As a global leader in the Islamic finance industry and a prominent issuer of sukuk, Malaysia serves as a critical case study for understanding this phenomenon. It is essential to investigate various factors and their impact on the growth of sukuk. The study analyzes the relationship between sukuk growth and factors such as interest rate, liquidity (M1), and Shariah law using monthly data from April 2011 to December 2020 obtained from Thomson Reuters Eikon. The study employs the ARDL …

A multitude of environmental factors correlate to negative outcomes on maternal and fetal health such as low birth weight. While studies reveal that housing quality, air pollution, and stress contribute to negative birth outcomes, it is unclear which housing factors have the greatest impact and how rural, suburban, and urban settings in the U.S. differ. The objective of this study was to delve into how environmental factors such as housing quality and community type impact low birth weight in Ohio. This study used publicly available data from County Health Rankings and Roadmaps to examine how different housing conditions correlate to …

Although medical advancements have improved the outcomes for infants born with low birth weight (LBW), these interventions are very expensive and low birth weight still was attributed to 16.1% of infant deaths in the United States in 20201. By understanding the factors that influence the incidence of low birth weight in the United States, preventative measures can be implemented to reduce the need for costly interventions and enhance infant health outcomes. In this study, we focused on 38 counties in Ohio that had either 75% or greater rural regions or 30% or less rural regions. Additionally, we focused on four …

Competencies, Knowledge, And Skills Of Effective School Nutrition Program Directors, Kymberle Gordon Phd, Jane Peterson Phd Rdn
Institute of Child Nutrition, Applied Research Division
Abstract
School nutrition program directors play a vital leadership role in ensuring school meal programs operate efficiently, effectively, and in compliance with federal, state, and local requirements. Competencies, knowledge, and skills (CKS) frameworks support these professionals by defining performance expectations, guiding professional development, and strengthening leadership capacity. The most recent CKS resource for school nutrition program directors was published in 2010, and substantial changes in regulatory requirements, operational complexity, workforce conditions, and leadership expectations have created a need for revision.
This study aimed to identify and validate the competencies, knowledge, and skills required for effective school nutrition program directors in …

When Climate Change Forces Flight: Legal Duties In The Age Of Retreat, Mark P. Nevitt
When Climate Change Forces Flight: Legal Duties In The Age Of Retreat, Mark P. Nevitt
Faculty Articles
In the face of climate-driven disasters, government officials and individuals alike must decide whether to invest in climate-exposed areas or retreat. This Article analyzes emerging legal and policy issues associated with both climate retreat (when the government relocates people and infrastructure away from climate-exposed areas) and abandonment (when individuals leave climate-exposed areas, following natural disasters or otherwise). I argue that government-driven climate retreat must consider four overlapping legal duties, raising novel questions in an era of climate destabilization. First, does the government have an affirmative duty to rescue its citizens, and is this duty transformed by the government’s role in …
How Ip Ends, David Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski
How Ip Ends, David Fagundes, Aaron Perzanowski

Real and personal property may last forever, but intellectual property (IP) ends. Despite the doctrinal complexity and practical significance of the mechanisms that terminate IP rights, scholarship has scarcely focused on them, and none has analyzed these doctrines as a unified field. As a result, the discourse about the ways IP ends remains impoverished, with courts, legislatures, and commentators offering imprecise and inconsistent formulations that obscure the rationales for these doctrines. This Article offers the first comprehensive taxonomy of IP’s terminal mechanisms, providing much-needed conceptual and definitional coherence. It then reveals the underappreciated policy leverage these mechanisms can deliver and …

Do We Really Want Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justices Practicing Law? A Public Policy Critique To U.S. Supreme Court Term Limits, Michael J. Broyde, Hayden H. Hall
Faculty Articles
In its 2021 final report, the Presidential Commission on Judicial Reform discussed the merits of implementing term limits for Supreme Court justices. The Commission began by acknowledging that eighteen-year, non-renewable terms have considerable bipartisan support, including the support of both Conservative and Progressive scholars at the National Constitution Center, whose proposals for improving the Constitution included term limits for justices. They continued by weighing the pros and cons of implementing term limits via constitutional amendment or statute, addressing, in turn, the specifics of what these limits might look like—whether a twelve or eighteen-year term is preferable, how a transition from …

Novel Socially Assistive Robot For Alzheimer's And Dementia Home Care; Lived Experiences Of Families, Audrey V. Downs
Honors Theses and Capstones
Informal caregivers for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) typically experience high levels of subjective caregiver burden due to strenuous role demands, notably the need to provide frequent reminders and 24/7 monitoring to address care recipient cognitive decline. The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of informal caregivers using a novel Socially Assistive Robot (SAR) to care for individuals with ADRD in a home setting and evaluate SAR impact on caregiver subjective burden. SARs are autonomous, interactive devices that can provide timed reminders and monitor home environments, potentially alleviating some caregiver role demands and …

True Threats, Public Safety, And Free Speech: An Empirical Analysis Of Counterman's Consequences, Jordan Birnholtz, Matthew B. Kugler
True Threats, Public Safety, And Free Speech: An Empirical Analysis Of Counterman's Consequences, Jordan Birnholtz, Matthew B. Kugler
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
Many scholars expected the Supreme Court’s Counterman decision to significantly reshape true threat law, undermining public safety while expanding protections for caustic political speech. Counterman required that a speaker consciously disregard a substantial risk that their communications would be viewed as threatening violence to give rise to liability. This created a concern that it would be difficult to convict harassers and stalkers who were, or claimed to be, delusional, and thus unaware of their speech’s likely impact. Scholars also feared the invalidation of some stalking and harassment statutes and increased difficulty in obtaining protective orders, which play a major role …
An Upside Of Originalism? Jury Size, Meghan J. Ryan
An Upside Of Originalism? Jury Size, Meghan J. Ryan
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
Originalists have taken over the Supreme Court, and many commentators are up in arms. This historical approach to constitutional interpretation can entrench historical biases, result in what many view as unjust decisions, and even cloak politically motivated opinions. But entirely rejecting a historical approach to constitutional interpretation overlooks what can be an upside of originalism: Because of our country’s unique history of being founded by British rebels, some practices from the time of the Founding—such as recognizing a strong jury right—advantage criminal defendants. Thus, employing a historical approach such as originalism in assessing the scope of constitutional protections can actually …
Uncharted Waters: Addressing The Shortcomings Of Criminal Liability Under The Clean Water Act By Charging Water Polluters With Assault, Abigail English
Uncharted Waters: Addressing The Shortcomings Of Criminal Liability Under The Clean Water Act By Charging Water Polluters With Assault, Abigail English
Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology
Water pollution incidents pose both acute and long-term risks to human health, yet the Clean Water Act (CWA) ineffectively holds water polluters accountable. By defining criminal violations in terms of technical breaches of the statute, the CWA’s criminal provisions are vulnerable to narrow judicial interpretations, leaving many environmental crimes unpunished. Furthermore, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rarely pursues criminal charges under the CWA, relying instead on civil fines, which fail to impose meaningful consequences. This underinclusiveness and under-utilization allows many polluters to evade serious penalties. Even when pollution incidents are covered by the CWA and the EPA pursues prosecution, the …

This initiative aimed to explore dietetic students’ experiences of using a GenAI simulated patient consultation as a revision aid to support communication skill development.
Methods: This evaluation involved second-year BSc Human Nutrition and Dietetics students undertaking the Professional Practice and Communications module. Following six face-to-face communication workshops, students completed a GenAI simulated consultation involving a 56-year-old male recently diagnosed with …
The Relationship Between U.S. Presidents And Governors From Opposing Political Parties: Policy Implementation And Crisis Management, Adam Richey
Honors College Theses
This thesis studies the impact of partisan divisions between U.S. presidents and state governors in regard to policy implementation and crisis management of the American federal system. While previous research has mainly addressed congressional polarization, executive relationships across different levels of government have received comparatively less scholarly focus. Particularism theory argues that electoral incentives shape executive behavior, and this study finds that political alignment significantly affects cooperation, coordination, and responsiveness during times of crises. Focusing on qualitative comparative case study methods, the analysis examines Hurricane Katrina (2005) and the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021). The results show that partisan division most often …
