Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Climate change and water pollution intensify algal blooms in natural lakes and reservoirs, leading to significant water quality challenges. Effectively removing excessive microalgae and algal toxins or micropollutants is essential for improving water quality, preserving aesthetic value, and protecting human health. This study evaluated the use of nanobubble-enabled foam fractionation for the removal of Microcystis aeruginosa and three microcystin congeners (MC-LR, MC-RR, and MC-YR). Foam was generated using air nanobubbles combined with surfactants—cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and chitosan—to enhance foamability and stability. Among the tested surfactants, CTAB exhibited the highest foamability, yielding improved removal performance. When CTAB …

ZNF16 (also known as HZF1 and KOX9) is a multi-C2H2 zinc finger protein first identified via its expression in human T-cells and shown to have a role in blood cell differentiation. ZNF16 was later shown to be ubiquitously expressed in a variety of fetal and adult tissues, suggesting a broader function. In this study, we confirm the ubiquitous expression of ZNF16 in a variety of cancer and non-cancer cell lines and show that ZNF16 depletion reduces cell viability in all cell lines tested. Furthermore, we show that ZNF16 localizes to the nucleolus in a transcription-dependent manner, interacts with the intergenic …

Vibration-Based Fault Diagnosis In Industrial Rotating Machinery, Yaman Pandey Jan 2026

Vibration-Based Fault Diagnosis In Industrial Rotating Machinery, Yaman Pandey

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Unplanned downtime caused by rotating machines results in a significant percentage of the total downtime in manufacturing plants. These downtimes cause significant loss of production time. While preventative maintenance helps minimize lot of these downtimes, it can’t predict the upcoming downtimes and prevent them from occurring. That gave birth to predictive maintenance. While various techniques are used for predictive maintenance, vibration analysis is one of them. In this study, data driven and expert validated diagnosis using vibration analysis for rotary machinery is used. The data is collected from a manufacturing site in Minnesota where 32 rotating assets, including motors and …

Participants’ responses were subsequently used to inform the development of e-learning modules for implementation within a medical school curriculum. Semi-structured focus groups were conducted with stakeholders, including medical students and faculty from a private osteopathic school of medicine. Transcripts of these discussions were analyzed using Colaizzi’s …

Toxic Exposure, Judy Ann Clausen Jan 2026

Toxic Exposure, Judy Ann Clausen

UF Law Faculty Publications

Service members are often exposed to toxins in service. When they file claims for disability compensation, they struggle to link their diseases to toxic exposure while serving. Congress stepped in to ease their burden by creating presumptions, relieving the veterans of the burden of proving a nexus between the exposure and their disease. In 2022, Congress enacted the PACT Act which expanded presumptive service connection for veterans whose service involved exposure to toxic substances. But, for veterans whose conditions do not fall within these presumptions, problems with the Department of Veterans Affairs (“VA”) benefits adjudication system make it difficult to …

Child Exploitation Through Online Sharing: “Sharenting” And The Role Of The Pediatric Provider, Stacey Steinberg, Cameron Rosenthal Jan 2026

Child Exploitation Through Online Sharing: “Sharenting” And The Role Of The Pediatric Provider, Stacey Steinberg, Cameron Rosenthal

UF Law Faculty Publications

The alarming trend of “sharenting” highlights the need for increased vigilance in protecting children from online exploitation. When parents share intimate details about children’s lives on social media, they may inadvertently expose them to danger. Pediatricians are equipped to safeguard children from parental abuse and neglect; however, they are less prepared to protect children from harm caused by parents online.

When parents exploit children on social media, pediatricians face challenges in protecting patients while also following laws that maintain parental autonomy. Using a child welfare framework, this article defines these online harms and proposes strategies for protecting children from exploitative …

Property Law As History, Michael Allan Wolf Jan 2026

Property Law As History, Michael Allan Wolf

UF Law Faculty Publications

Because property law and history are so inextricably intertwined, it has become even more important for law professors to share with students and colleagues the ways in which knowledge of history unlocks difficult concepts, suggests workable solutions to contemporary puzzles, and makes very dry concepts—destructible contingent remainders, running covenants, privity, and the Rule in Dumpor’s Case—much easier to digest.   Sampling from the doctrinal menu of a typical first-year property course--adverse possession, present estates and future interests, landlord-tenant, concurrent interests, servitudes, land transactions, eminent domain, regulatory takings, and zoning--this article identifies two aspects of the law of property as history, using …

This article will begin with a discussion of the underlying reasons for creating these accounts and their enactment as part of the OBBBA. Following that, it will discuss the rules relating to these accounts from both the OBBBA’s statutory language as well as recently published …

Improving Nurse Confidence And Patient Safety Through Timely Nonpharmacologic Delirium Prevention Interventions: A Quality Improvement Project, Claire E. Mccabe Jan 2026

Improving Nurse Confidence And Patient Safety Through Timely Nonpharmacologic Delirium Prevention Interventions: A Quality Improvement Project, Claire E. Mccabe

Master's Theses and Capstones

Abstract

Background

Delirium prevention is an ongoing patient safety priority within a Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) because delirium contributes to preventable patient harm, including unplanned device removal, prolonged mechanical ventilation, falls, increased mortality, and long-term cognitive impairment. Key signs of delirium include fluctuating awareness, severe confusion, disorganized thinking, and difficulty focusing. Although the ABCDEF bundle is established within the local MICU, an implementation gap remained in consistently integrating nonpharmacologic prevention strategies into routine nursing workflows.

Methods

The purpose of this quality improvement project was to improve nurse confidence, awareness of workflow opportunities, and implementation of evidence-based delirium prevention interventions …

The Seasonal Succession Of Plankton Communities In The Broads Of Lake Winnipesaukee. The Importance Of Continued Monitoring In The Wake Of The Invasion Of Bythotrephes Longimanus., Jessica Urlage

UNH URC Open (2026 and after)

This research contributes to our understanding of how plankton communities shift over seasonal cycles and how invasive species can influence freshwater plankton dynamics and overall lake ecosystem function. As the first year that the Lake Winnipesaukee Alliance conducted plankton monitoring in the “Broads,” this work also provides an important baseline for future long-term monitoring efforts.

Seasonal succession generally followed expected patterns, indicating good water quality consistent with a low-productivity system. However, the absence of Daphnia and other cladocerans after mid-June raises concern and may be linked to the invasive spiny water flea. This is significant because Daphnia are key grazers …

In this research, I seek to analyze the reproductive policies set forth by the Donald J. Trump Administration in the year of 2025. In this analysis, I ask, what role stratified reproduction plays in the framing of the natalist policies by the news media. Secondly, I ask the following questions: 1) What reproductive health issues were centralized in the print news coverage of the 2025 Trump Administration? 2) Does the mainstream news media identify how President Trump’s policies differentially benefit and marginalize individuals in a manner that privileges some mothers over others? To answer these questions, I conducted a qualitative …

The Relationship Of State/Trait Anxiety And Performance In High School Athletics, Jason Dzierwa Jan 2026

The Relationship Of State/Trait Anxiety And Performance In High School Athletics, Jason Dzierwa

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

The relationship between anxiety and sport performance has been investigated since the early 1900s when Yerkes & Dodson coined Yerkes-Dodson Law, which stated that there was an inverted “U” shape between arousal and performance (Gill et al., 2025, p. 158). Although this research was originally conducted using an animal model, it was eventually applied to human contexts, including athletic performance. According to this law, athletes must have a moderate level of arousal in order to perform at their best, while having too little or too much arousal will negatively influence athletic performance. Because anxiety often includes physiological (i.e., somatic) and …

The Importance And Development Of Team Record Keeping Practices: The Development Of Record Keeping Practices For Bowling Green Men's Rugby, Fitzpatrick Metzger

Master of Education in Applied Human Development Graduate Projects

If you participated in team sports, do you know the history of the teams you played for? It is fair to assume that athletes who play at the top collegiate level have greater knowledge of the team’s history for which they play. These high-level collegiate teams have the funding and resources necessary to document their team’s history properly. Club and Varsity sports indeed have separate budgets and resources available. Throughout the sports industry, it is well known that each university provides its athletic department with differing annual budgets, which are dependent on many different factors. Based on the Proposed Fiscal …

Brace For Impact: Castleman, Bruen, Rahimi, And The Collision Course Of Domestic Violence And Gun Violence Jurisprudence, Gill, Colleen Jan 2026

Brace For Impact: Castleman, Bruen, Rahimi, And The Collision Course Of Domestic Violence And Gun Violence Jurisprudence, Gill, Colleen

Santa Clara Law Review

In June 2022, the Supreme Court articulated a new standard of judicial review for Second Amendment cases in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen. Though the Court claimed that Bruen’s “history and tradition” standard was consistent with previous Second Amendment analyses, lower courts struggled to apply it. Two years later, the Court revisited Bruen for the first time in United States v. Rahimi. However, Rahimi came with a unique set of facts – at its core, it was a case about domestic violence restraining orders.

This Note uses Rahimi to showcase the limits of the history …

Analyzing The Impact Of Sunscreen Pollutants On The Development Of Lytechinus Variegatus, Christina M. Lillenas, Chesney J. Anderson, Ann M. Buchmann

Nebraska Academy of Sciences: Programs and Proceedings

Lytechinus variegatus or the variegated sea urchin is found in shallow, tropical waters. Lytechinus variegatus can be found in sandy reef beds, and sea grass, covered in algae and debris to protect itself from the UV rays and predators. Sea urchins play a crucial role in coral reef ecosystems. Sea urchins follow an omnivore diet, feeding on algae and phytoplankton. In coral reef ecosystems, sea urchins eat unwanted algae, allowing coral reefs to continue growing and thriving. Without the presence of sea urchins in coral reef communities, algae can negatively affect the growth and success of coral reefs. Sunscreen serves …
