Purpose

Workplace genetic testing (wGT) is a wellness benefit offered to employees, providing a new access point for genetic testing. Although genetic counseling is not typically required in wGT, genetic counselors (GCs) play a key role in integrating genetic testing into health care and may interact with wGT in industry, laboratory, or clinical settings.

Methods

To ascertain US GCs’ perspectives and experiences with wGT, we administered a web-based survey, targeting GCs most likely to have professional experience with wGT. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize responses.

Results

Of n = 331 participants (mean age = 36, >80% White female), 27.0% …

Density Dependence During Evolutionary Rescue Increases Extinction Risk But Does Not Prevent Adaptation, Laure Olazcuaga, Brett A. Melbourne, Scott W. Nordstrom, Ruth A. Hufbauer Jan 2026

Density Dependence During Evolutionary Rescue Increases Extinction Risk But Does Not Prevent Adaptation, Laure Olazcuaga, Brett A. Melbourne, Scott W. Nordstrom, Ruth A. Hufbauer

Publications, Reports and Presentations

Evolutionary rescue allows populations to adapt and persist despite severe environmental change. While well studied under density-independent conditions, the role of density dependence, including competition, remains unclear. Theoretical models offer conflicting predictions, with density dependence either increasing extinction risk or enhancing adaptation. We empirically tested how density dependence influences evolutionary rescue by exposing experimental populations to a stressful environment for six generations under density-dependent or independent conditions, with populations where either evolution was possible or was prevented by replacing individuals each generation. Density dependence suppressed population size and increased extinction risk, whereas density independence enabled rapid growth, especially in genetically …

Ai-Driven Risk Forecasting For Strengthening The United States Food Supply Chain Resilience: Case Study: A National Ai-Enabled Food Supply Chain Risk Forecasting Framework And A Data Analytics Approach To Predicting Disruptions, Sarah Onyeche Usoro, Itua Austin Omogiate, Rahab Zhewe Felix, David Azikutenyi Galadima

Student Publications

The United States food supply chain is one of the most complex and interconnected systems in the world, spanning agricultural production, processing, transportation, storage, and retail distribution. While this complexity enables efficiency and scale, it also increases vulnerability to disruptions caused by climate change, labor shortages, geopolitical shocks, transportation failures, cyber threats, and public health crises. Conventional risk management methods, often reactive and siloed, have proven inadequate in predicting and mitigating systemic shocks that have become frequent occurrences in today’s world. This article examines how artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics can transform risk forecasting in U.S. food supply chains …

Oregon, Elizabeth Ford

Thin Blue Advantage: Police Exceptionalism and the Two-Tier System of Public Sector Collective Bargaining

In Oregon has historically seen distinctions between the treatment of police and non-police bargaining units but has recently made statutory changes to address some of those issues.

  • Oversight. In 2023, Oregon enacted a change to its public sector collective bargaining statute exempting from bargaining an oversight system enacted by popular vote.
  • Statutory Scope. Oregon’s statute provides a broader scope of bargaining for police in other areas such as safety issues
  • Oversight and Work Transfer Decisions. Before 2023, Oregon’s Employment Relations Board set a more favorable standard for bargaining oversight and work transfers from police bargaining units.
  • Impasse …

Themes were identified using thematic analysis with a directive and deductive approach based on SCT. Focus groups revealed eight major themes across the SCT. Cognitive themes included: (1) improved nutrition literacy, (2) understanding the nutrition-mental health connection, and (3) increased awareness of …

Commission Quorums, Nicholas Bednar, Todd Phillips Jan 2026

Commission Quorums, Nicholas Bednar, Todd Phillips

Articles

Multimember commissions are a central feature of the modern administrative state. Yet a growing number have lost their legal authority to function—not through statutory repeal or defunding, but because they lack a quorum. In many cases, these quorum losses stem from the President’s assertion of a broad removal power, which causes vacancies in the commission’s membership. Quorum losses lead to agency inaction, prevent the executive branch from ensuring faithful execution of the laws, and threaten the constitutional rights of individuals who appear before adjudicatory commissions.

This Article presents an empirical study of quorum rules in multimember commissions. It traces how …

Fair Use In The Supreme Court: A Peek Behind The Scenes, Jonathan Band Jan 2026

Fair Use In The Supreme Court: A Peek Behind The Scenes, Jonathan Band

Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series

Between 1975 and 1994, the Supreme Court considered five cases that involved fair use: Williams & Wilkins v. United States; Sony v. Universal City Studios; Harper & Row v. Nation Enterprises; Stewart v. Abend; and Campbell v. Acuff-Rose. The papers of the Supreme Court Justices that decided these cases show the Court as a profoundly human institution with the Justices often struggling to fashion opinions that could gain the support of a majority. The Justices clearly cared about the copyright merits, but they were also willing to compromise to achieve a certain result. In several …

Shaping Corporate Behavior Through Enforcement: Evidence From The No-Poach Initiative, Lorenzo G. Luisetto Jan 2026

Shaping Corporate Behavior Through Enforcement: Evidence From The No-Poach Initiative, Lorenzo G. Luisetto

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

In recent years, government entities have pursued legal action against restrictive clauses in employment contracts that limit labor mobility and may stifle competition in both labor and product markets. To date, however, little is known about how firms respond to enforcement actions aimed at regulating the relationships they have with their employees. Leveraging a sample of 293 franchisors, in this paper I investigate the spillover effects of the so-called “No-Poach Initiative,” an unprecedent enforcement action launched by the Antitrust Division of the State of Washington Attorney General’s Office in January 2018. This initiative resulted in 237 franchisors (39 of which …

Speaking For The Families: Organizational Socialization Of Military Spouses In Volunteer Leader Positions, Virginia Klaus Jan 2026

Speaking For The Families: Organizational Socialization Of Military Spouses In Volunteer Leader Positions, Virginia Klaus

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Military spouses holding volunteer leadership positions in military unit family readiness groups, provide a link between commanders and families of service members. They act within military organizations as the only official voice of spouses, a stakeholder group recognized as influential in retention rates and force readiness. Despite their importance, military spouses are often portrayed in research as passive members, taking on roles to meet the expectations of their peers and military organizations. That contradicts historical evidence of military spouses as active organizational members who have socialized other spouses, and as family advocates who have challenged military organizational practices and policies. …

Don’T Give The Fae Your Name: Focus Of Attention And Victim Blaming, Entropy Cramer Jan 2026

Don’T Give The Fae Your Name: Focus Of Attention And Victim Blaming, Entropy Cramer

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

Victim-blaming is thought to be a result of the fundamental attributional error, where people over-emphasize internal attributions about the victim. Despite this, there is little literature on manipulating the focus of attention and the result for victim-blaming. People who are high in rape myth acceptance tend to visually focus on the victims longer (Süssenbach et al., 2015). Rempala and Bernieri (2005) found that adding irrelevant information, such as height and weight, to the trial about the victim increased victim-blaming compared to when it was absent. The current study investigated if relevant information about the victim and perpetrator changed the amount …

Attention Or Affect? Evaluating The Discriminant Validity Of Cpt-3 Performance, Gavin F. Price Jan 2026

Attention Or Affect? Evaluating The Discriminant Validity Of Cpt-3 Performance, Gavin F. Price

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

The Conner Continuous Performance Test Third Edition (CPT-3) is a behavior-based measure of attention-related problems commonly used to assess Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Research into the discriminant validity of the CPT-3 remains limited, particularly regarding the influence of internalizing symptoms such as anxiety and depression on performance. The current study examined whether CPT-3 performance was more strongly associated with cognitive indicators of inattention or internalizing symptoms, such as depressive or anxious symptoms. Archival data from 105 adult clients at Murray State University Psychological Center was analyzed. Cognitive inattention was measured using Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI) – Working Memory Index (WMI) discrepancy …

The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine academic growth from the PreACT to the ACT among students attending a rural public high school in Alabama and to investigate whether socioeconomic status (SES) and attendance were associated with differences in that growth. Guided by Opportunity-to-Learn Theory, the study explored whether students demonstrated academic growth during high school and whether SES, attendance, or the interaction between these variables influenced growth outcomes. Archival student-level data were collected from four graduating cohorts. The final sample consisted of 384 students with complete records for PreACT scores, ACT scores, attendance, and socioeconomic status. …

Mapping Coastal Vegetation To Evaluate Salt Marsh Decline From 2016 To 2025 In South Carolina, Usa, Zak Henry Bartholomew Jan 2026

Mapping Coastal Vegetation To Evaluate Salt Marsh Decline From 2016 To 2025 In South Carolina, Usa, Zak Henry Bartholomew

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Accelerating sea-level rise and storm surge events pose a substantial threat to salt marsh ecosystems, which provide critical ecosystem services. Classification and mapping of coastal vegetation through remote sensing can identify marsh dieback events and provide spatial context for patterns of marsh vulnerability. We used a multi-sensor approach that incorporated LiDAR data, multispectral imagery, and field-derived cover estimates to classify Spartina alterniflora (smooth cordgrass) dominated marsh types on Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island (MCRDPI), a sea island in South Carolina, USA. In summer 2025, surveys were conducted within marsh classes to collect training and validation data. We used random …

Do Magnesium Ions Have Similar Effects As Calcium Ions On Resting Membrane Potential?, Anthony Hana, Youngwoo Kim, Joy Bidros, Katie Neglia, Robin L. Cooper Jan 2026

Do Magnesium Ions Have Similar Effects As Calcium Ions On Resting Membrane Potential?, Anthony Hana, Youngwoo Kim, Joy Bidros, Katie Neglia, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

Maintaining a membrane electrical potential of biological cells is a dynamic process, as some cells have a continually changing potential, like pacemaker cells, while other cells may function with large or small changes in the membrane potential. Additionally, some cells may change their electrical potential when stimulated or inhibited by electrical signals, chemical compounds, or both—either simultaneously or episodically. The persistent leak of K+ through two-pore-domain potassium channels (K2P) and of Na+ through Na+ leak channels (NALCNs) and the action of pumps and exchangers are primarily responsible for maintaining a resting potential. Ca2+ ions are known …

Exogenous Estradiol Does Not Regulate Daily Metabolic Rhythms Underlying Diet-Induced Obesity In Male Mice, W. Brad Osborne, Oliver Vöcking, Victoria Alvord, Oluwabukola Omotola, Yuriko Katsumata, Julie S. Pendergast Jan 2026

Exogenous Estradiol Does Not Regulate Daily Metabolic Rhythms Underlying Diet-Induced Obesity In Male Mice, W. Brad Osborne, Oliver Vöcking, Victoria Alvord, Oluwabukola Omotola, Yuriko Katsumata, Julie S. Pendergast

Biology Faculty Publications

Male mice fed high-fat diet become obese, but female mice are resistant to diet-induced weight gain. We previously found that circulating estradiol in females protects their daily rhythms from disruption by high-fat feeding to prevent diet-induced obesity. The goal of this study was to determine the effects of estradiol on daily metabolic rhythms in male mice. Male C57BL/6J mice were treated with estradiol and fed high-fat diet for 2 weeks. We measured the effects of high-fat diet feeding on daily rhythms of eating behavior and locomotor activity, and on the phases, or timing, of circadian rhythms in central and peripheral …

Drinking Microstructure Analysis Of Direct Controls Of Water Intake In Male And Female Rats, Bo W. Sortman, Emalie L. Mullane, Kennedy L. Lamb, Andrea A. Edwards, Ann-Marie Torregrossa, Derek Daniels, Jessica Santollo

Biology Faculty Publications

Measures of rodent drinking (lick) patterns are used to test how various manipulations affect fluid intake. Decades of research indicate that manipulating the satiating potency of a stimulus affects the number of licking bursts whereas manipulating the hedonic value of the solution affects the size of the licking bursts or rate of licking. This type of analysis has been largely applied to manipulations that modulate drinking that is already occurring (i.e., indirect controls or modulators of intake), but there is a dearth of studies with detailed measures of licking due to stimuli that are primary drivers of intake which happen …

Expressing Experiences Of Being Gender Non-Conforming In The “Ladies” Restroom Through Autoethnography-Based Research Poetics, Ellen D.B. Riggle Jan 2026

Expressing Experiences Of Being Gender Non-Conforming In The “Ladies” Restroom Through Autoethnography-Based Research Poetics, Ellen D.B. Riggle

Gender and Women's Studies Faculty Publications

Three research poems are created as an autoethnographic response to feedback on a research article on the author’s experiences as a gender non-conforming person in women’s public restrooms. The feedback loop includes the sharing of lived experiences by others and theoretical (why?) discussions in the context of the gendered policing and politicalization of women’s restrooms. The first found poem includes words, phrases, and descriptions of images used to label spaces designated as women’s restrooms. The second prose poem recounts the author's experiences through a reframing of risk to women’s health, understanding the cultural context of male entitlement and White supremacy, …
