Access To Primary Care And Health Care Fragmentation, Sharona Hoffman, Ishani Ganguli Jan 2026

Access To Primary Care And Health Care Fragmentation, Sharona Hoffman, Ishani Ganguli

Faculty Publications

This Article examines the growing crisis of long primary care wait times and the health care fragmentation that is associated with them. Patients who feel ill or are worried about new symptoms must often wait weeks or longer for appointments. In the wake of excessive wait times for primary care physician (PCP) appointments, patients increasingly turn to convenience care models such as urgent care centers, retail clinics, direct-to-consumer telemedicine, and at-home testing. While these alternatives offer prompt attention, they sacrifice other core functions of primary care and may exacerbate poor health outcomes and inequities. The Article argues that long wait …

The Relationship Between Implementation Of Effective Schools Practices, School Performance, And Improvement, Kelly Mchugh Massinople

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Effective schools frameworks describe the evidence-based practices implemented at schools, including those with disproportionately high levels of students living in poverty, that have high levels of student achievement (Edmonds, 1979; Lezotte, 1982; Lezotte & McKee Snyder, 2010; Padilla et al., 2020; Sammons et al., 1995). This study examined the relationship between the implementation of effective schools practices, as described in the research, and school performance and school improvement, as reported in state accountability indicators. The analysis focused on improvement efforts initiated at 21 West Virginia schools identified in the fall of 2022 for Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI) under the …

Secondary Traumatic Stress, Compassion Fatigue, And Resiliency Strategies In Urban Public Schools, Clay Russell Welch Jan 2026

Secondary Traumatic Stress, Compassion Fatigue, And Resiliency Strategies In Urban Public Schools, Clay Russell Welch

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Urban educators frequently support students who have experienced significant trauma, increasing their vulnerability to secondary traumatic stress (STS) and compassion fatigue (CF). Although trauma-informed practices have expanded in public education, limited research has examined how educators develop and sustain resilience strategies as they navigate the emotional demands of their work. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the strategies urban educators use to mitigate STS and CF and to understand how these strategies develop across educators’ professional experiences. The study also examined potential differences in strategies across demographic groups and considered implications for educational leadership.

Seventeen educators from …

Ai In The Workplace: Understanding Role Ambiguity, Employee Motivation, And Learning Engagement, Sheena Leah Metzger

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into organizational processes has altered how work is performed and experienced by employees, yet empirical research examining the human implications of AI-driven change remains limited. This study examined the perceived impact of AI implementation on role ambiguity, employee motivation, and training engagement, and investigated the moderating role of perceived organizational support (POS). Grounded in Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) Theory and Organizational Support Theory (OST), the research examined how employees interpreted and responded to AI-related changes in their work environment.

The results offer valuable insights into a shifting perception of how employees experience technology in …

Microbial Signatures Of Breast Carcinogenesis: Synthesizing Evidence From Breast Tissue Microbiome Studies, Caroline Rodriguez, Revanth Madamsetty, Krishna Dasyam, Navi Gill Dhillon

Bioinformatics

Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide, affecting approximately one in eight women in the United States1. Recent advances in microbiome research have highlighted the microbiome’s essential role in maintaining health and influencing disease progression. Increasing attention has been directed toward understanding how microbial communities contribute to cancer development, particularly through effects on immune function, metabolism, and cellular signaling pathways. While most existing research has examined the gut microbiome and its relationship to breast cancer focusing on the gut–breast axis, microbial translocation, and their contributions to tumor progression, there is a growing need to characterize the breast …

Comparative Genomics Across Ganoderma Species To Identify Secondary Metabolite Clusters With Cytotoxic Properties, Fatima Muhammad, Maya Pasapuleti, Navya Mysore, Emily Abraham, Rajendra P. Pangeni, Braham Dhillon, Navi Gill Dhillon

Bioinformatics

Fungi in the genus Ganoderma have been widely studied in Chinese culture for their medicinal properties and promoting overall health and longevity. Our prior work on eight Ganoderma species showed that they contain Secondary Metabolite Clusters (SMCs) that code for multiple terpenes, betalactones, and ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides (RiPPs). These compounds are well known for their cytotoxic and anticancer potential. Using the bioinformatics platform antiSMASH1, we previously identified and annotated the specific SMCs within these genomes that are predicted to produce such bioactive metabolites. To test the results obtained from the bioinformatics analysis, fungal extracts were prepared from …

Asymptotic Profiles And Disease Prevalence At The Steady State For An Sis Patch Model, Daozhou Gao, Xin Li Jan 2026

Asymptotic Profiles And Disease Prevalence At The Steady State For An Sis Patch Model, Daozhou Gao, Xin Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Infected individuals often display mobility patterns that differ significantly from those of healthy individuals-traveling less frequently, covering shorter distances, visiting fewer destinations, and altering their timing and modes of movement. In this paper, to explore the influence of changes in travel frequency and destination on the spatial spread of infectious diseases, we propose a susceptible-infectious-susceptible patch model in which susceptible and infected populations have different dispersal rates and connectivity matrices. We first establish the threshold dynamics in terms of the basic reproduction number R-0 and show the existence and uniqueness of endemic equilibrium (EE) when R-0>1. Then we examine …

The Lives Of Fritz Haber And Of International Law: Entwined Tales Of Tragedy And Irony, Mark A. Drumbl, C. William Vardy

Scholarly Articles

This article recounts the life of international law through the story of a single individual. This is the narrative of biographical international law. The subject — equally protagonist and antagonist — of this article is Fritz Haber, a German-Jewish scientist born in 1868. Devoted to the Kaiser, Haber was declared a war criminal by the Allies following World War I for having been ‘the father’ of chemical warfare. Haber argued that chemical weapons were more humane than conventional weapons. While under this shadow, Haber also won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1920 for his pioneering work with ammonia …

Enforcing International Humanitarian Law Through The Business Responsibility To Respect Human Rights, Tara Van Ho Jan 2026

Enforcing International Humanitarian Law Through The Business Responsibility To Respect Human Rights, Tara Van Ho

Faculty Articles

Insulation produced by the Danish company Rockwool—or its Russian subsidiary—lines thirty-one Russian Navy warships. Though not a weapon, this material is essential to the vessels’ operation. Did Rockwool have a responsibility under international law to stop the transfer of the insulation to the Russian Navy before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine? This article examines the business responsibilities under the 2011 United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (“UNGPs”). In doing so, the article finds that the business responsibility to respect human rights in the UNGPs provides a strong mechanism for enforcing international humanitarian law (“IHL”). However, it requires …

Correcting The Record: Responding To Some Legal Arguments About The 2026 Billionaire Tax Act, David Gamage, Brian D. Galle, Darien Shanske

If adopted by California voters in November of 2026, the 2026 California Billionaire Tax Act (CBTA) would impose a one-time 5% tax on the net worth of California billionaires, payable in five annual installments of 1% over 5 years (plus a small deferral charge). Critics have raised several arguments suggesting that the Act would not bring in the expected $100 billion in projected revenues because, the critics say, key parts of the Act are unconstitutional and would be subject to legal challenge. In fact, the supposed new legal challenges critics identify are mostly just very old arguments that courts have …
