Enfranchising Fluoride: A Case For Democratic Decision-Making In What We Drink, Samuel N. Dick, R. Chase Bailey
Enfranchising Fluoride: A Case For Democratic Decision-Making In What We Drink, Samuel N. Dick, R. Chase Bailey
Wyoming Law Review
For years, the addition of fluoride in drinking water has been hailed as a powerful agent for dental health. But the closer you look, the more cracks appear—making the truth that much harder to swallow.
This Article is the first to look objectively at the benefits and risks of water fluoridation following Food & Water Watch, Inc. v. EPA. Notably, the court there held that fluoride poses an unreasonable risk to human health, marking a striking departure from those who, as recently as 2024, have continued to herald water fluoridation as one of the greatest public health interventions of …

Management Control Systems And Financial Stability In Nonprofit Organizations, Mary Constance Augustine
Management Control Systems And Financial Stability In Nonprofit Organizations, Mary Constance Augustine
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Nonprofit organizations are critical to the United States economy, employing more than 12.8 million and providing vital services beyond what government programs can accomplish. These organizations are facing unparalleled financial challenges as competition for revenue sources increases and competitive pressure to excessively reduce overhead costs increases. Over the last three decades, managerial accounting literature has studied the effect of management control systems on innovative abilities in the commercial sector and recently, scholars have begun to apply these theories and methods to the nonprofit sector. Using Simons’ Levers of Control framework, this study employs a validated survey scale for nonprofit organizations …

In Vitro Dihalobenzene Nephrotoxicity In Isolated Kidney Cells, Jana Ahmed Sherif
In Vitro Dihalobenzene Nephrotoxicity In Isolated Kidney Cells, Jana Ahmed Sherif
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Brominated and chlorinated benzenes are common industrial chemicals linked to kidney injury. This study evaluated the nephrotoxicity of several mono- and dihalogenated derivatives using isolated kidney cells from male Fischer 344 rats. LDH release and trypan blue exclusion were measured after 30- and 60-minute exposures to 0.25–1.0 mM to test compounds. Toxicity increased with increased concentration and longer times. Mixed-halogen bromobenzenes, particularly 1-bromo-4-chlorobenzene, showed one of the highest toxicity levels, while 1,4dichlorobenzene was the most toxic chlorobenzene. Antioxidants (glutathione, ascorbate, and αtocopherol) markedly reduced injury, indicating oxidative mechanisms play a role in toxicity. cytochromes P450 (CYP) inhibitors (piperonyl butoxide and …

Internal Medicine Resident Research
Primary dural lymphoma (PDL) is a rare subtype of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL), accounting for fewer than 1% of cases. It originates from the dura mater with no evidence of parenchymal or systemic involvement and is usually a low-grade marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZL). High-grade variants, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), are extremely uncommon and clinically more aggressive. We describe the case of a 65-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with progressive headaches and right-sided weakness. Brain MRI revealed a right frontoparietal dural-based enhancing lesion with a dural tail, closely mimicking meningioma on imaging. Subtotal resection was performed, …

Missing The Forest For The Trees:The Supreme Court Of Canada’S Formalistic Approach Inthe Iaa Reference A Setback For Environmental And Climate Law In Canada, Nathalie J. Chalifour
The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This article explores whether the Supreme Court of Canada majority’s reasons in the Reference re Impact Assessment Act missed the forest for the trees. By applying a literal interpretation to the definition of “effects within federal jurisdiction” and what the Court called the “interprovincial effects clause” in the legislation, the majority departed from decades of flexible, purposive interpretation of environmental legislation. This article highlights three interrelated critiques of this aspect of the decision. First, it unpacks the way in which the majority’s reasons run contrary to the Supreme Court’s consistent approach to interpreting environmental legislation in previous decisions, inviting readers …

Understanding Parents’ Information Seeking About Adolescents’ Use Of Social Apps Using Theory Of Motivated Information Management, Aimee E. Miller-Ott, Lynne Kelly, Caleb T. Carr
Faculty Publications - Communications
Many parents have concerns about what their adolescent children are doing online, including potential risks of their tweens and teens encountering people who may want to harm them. Some fear they do not know what their children are doing online and may be motivated to seek information to alleviate their uncertainty. This study applied the theory of motivated information management (TMIM) to examine parents’ information management process amid feelings of uncertainty surrounding their adolescent children’s use of social apps. Respondents (N =146) were parents/caregivers of adolescent children recruited using Prolific to complete a survey measuring the components of TMIM …
Examining The Association Between Ddt Exposure And Parkinson’S Disease, Hodges Mccathern
Examining The Association Between Ddt Exposure And Parkinson’S Disease, Hodges Mccathern
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, commonly known as DDT, was an organochlorine pesticide widely used in the mid-20th century. It is highly stable and resistant to degradation, leading to its long-term presence in the environment. This chemical bioaccumulates in ecosystems and in human tissue, particularly adipose tissue, raising concerns about chronic exposure. Emerging research links DDT exposure to adverse neurological outcomes, including increased risk for neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease. Mechanistically, DDT and its metabolites may disrupt dopaminergic neurons, induce oxidative stress, and interfere with mitochondrial function, contributing to neurotoxicity. Understanding the environmental fate of DDT and its bioaccumulative properties is essential for …

Social media play a key role in sport marketing—with athletes, teams, and leagues directly engaging with their audiences. While Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have received much attention in the sport marketing and communication literature, research on Reddit is scant. This is particularly noteworthy, as the platform is growing rapidly and promises utility for users with nonmainstream interests to find and engage with each other. This study employs a uses and gratifications approach to investigate how prevalent Reddit use is among fans of the United Football League (UFL), what motivates users to engage with the platform, and whether Reddit use leads …

The Association Between Personal Particulate Matter Exposures And Cognitive Function Among Stroke Patients, Kentucky, Usa, Nana Afua Ankomah Dei
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Stroke, a major cause of long-term disability and cognitive problems in the U.S., significantly affects people’s quality of life. Exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5) may result in systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, which can worsen the cognitive function of post-thrombectomy stroke patients. This project thus assessed the relationship between PM2.5 exposure and its effect on the cognitive function of post-thrombectomy stroke patients. Fifteen stroke patients (9 non-Appalachian and 6 Appalachian) undergone thrombectomy were recruited. Personal PM2.5 exposure was measured using wearable sensors for a week during the study period. Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) scores and covariates …
Missing The Right(S) Point: How Australia’S Social Media Ban Fails Children And The Case For A Holistic Rights-Based Approach To Online Safety, Ying Chen
American University International Law Review
In December 2024, Australia rewrote the rules of growing up. Children under sixteen may learn to drive, open a bank account, and even face criminal charges—yet the Australian Government considers them too young to scroll through Instagram or send a Snapchat. With the enactment of the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024, Australia became the first country to introduce an outright ban on social media access for those under sixteen. This bold legislative move has attracted global attention, with several countries reportedly considering similar measures. Through a critical analysis of Australia’s social media ban, this article provides …

Purpose/Background
Propofol is widely regarded as the standard anesthetic agent for preventing and treating emergence delirium, particularly in pediatric patients. Emergence delirium presents as postoperative agitation that may escalate to self-injurious behavior that can lead to disruption of critical lines or equipment. Since its approval in 1999, dexmedetomidine has gained attention for its sedative and sympatholytic properties, offering potential advantages over propofol. This study compares the postoperative effects of propofol and dexmedetomidine in reducing emergence delirium in pediatric surgical patients.
Methods
A scoping review was conducted using PRISMA guidelines to identify relevant literature published between 2000 and 2025. Databases searched …
Unwanted Medical Treatment Harms Patients: Taxonomy Of Healthcare Consent Infractions, Thaddeus Pope
Unwanted Medical Treatment Harms Patients: Taxonomy Of Healthcare Consent Infractions, Thaddeus Pope
Faculty Scholarship
Patients in the United States are subject to an ever-growing “avalanche” of unwanted medical treatment (UMT). This is ethically, economically, and legally wrong. First, UMT constitutes a serious violation of patient autonomy and self-determination. Second, it is waste (and often fraud or abuse) of scarce healthcare resources. Third, but for rare exceptions, administering UMT contravenes settled legal rules and principles around consent and battery.
This article describe four types of unwanted medical treatment and how the law addresses (or fails to address) them. The four types of UMT are (1) treatment over patient objections, (2) treatment with zero consent, (3) …

Civil And Criminal Justice Remedies For Intimate Partner Violence, Demetrice M. Lopez, Anika Ramos
Hunter Center Publications
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a persistent public health problem that impacts the physical and mental health of millions of people each year. The United States has historically relied on the legal system as the primary means of addressing IPV as a criminal or civil infraction. This chapter begins with a review of the history of IPV in the context of the legal system. It then considers the dynamics of IPV and its influence on the legal response. The chapter then looks at the broader impact of IPV and remedies for survivors in the justice system. Finally, it considers the …

A Formative Assessment Of Traditional Undergraduate Students’ Use Of An Ai Learning Platform In Stem Courses, Dane C. Joseph, Rick Muthiah
Faculty Publications - College of Education
A small to midsized university supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education by partnering with a reputable online learning company to provide students and faculty access to artificial intelligence powered textbook problem sets and chatbots. An in-house formative assessment study was conducted in Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 to understand how traditional undergraduate students engaged with the platform. Quantitative results suggests that the general population did not utilize it as much as initially expected. Qualitative findings imply that students might have preferred alternative platforms like ChatGPT, though this may have had nothing to do with the company itself. Overall, …

When Words Flow Like Water: How The Enbridge Line 3 Pipeline Environmental Impact Statement Failed To Prevent Hydrogeologic Harm In Minnesota, Carly Gutzmann
Journal of Earth and Life Science
For the aquifers of Minnesota, the environmental impact statement (EIS) was a promise of protection that never left the page. An environmental impact statement is meant to be an aid in the decision making process in order to ensure that projects consider potential environmental harms that may occur. However, they are often used instead as another regulatory box to check, rather than as active considerations when planning. As such, a project plan can be flawed from the start—if project developers only consider environmental impacts after they have already put considerable time, effort, and funding into their project as-is, they may …
Largemouth Bass Diet Changes Through The Summer In Central Minnesota, Ethan Kunz
Largemouth Bass Diet Changes Through The Summer In Central Minnesota, Ethan Kunz
Journal of Earth and Life Science
Largemouth Bass Micropterus nigricans is one of the most widespread fish species in the world, due in part to human introduction for angling. Largemouth Bass are opportunistic predators that will consume the largest prey they can often find; however, it has been shown that their diet mainly consists of invertebrates such as crayfish, with less focus on other fish species. This research aimed to determine what the Largemouth Bass diets in Central Minnesota consist of, and how they may change from the beginning of summer through the beginning of fall. A total of 174 Largemouth Bass were sampled from late …
Redness As Fact And Sensibility In Mindanao’S Abaca Ikat Cloth, Cherubim Quizon
Redness As Fact And Sensibility In Mindanao’S Abaca Ikat Cloth, Cherubim Quizon
Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work Publications
This paper proposes an approach to the color red as a central consideration in cloth making in the southern Philippines where thread is made from abaca (Musa textilis), a historically and economically significant plant in the banana family. It focuses on red dye derived from the root of the Morinda plant (Morinda citrifolia) and how it is utilized and theorized, both pragmatically and metaphorically, by indigenous women of Mindanao. Drawing on research that relies on ethnographic fieldwork and informed by early 20th century American museum collecting during a time of pacification, this paper frames a phenomenological query using mixed methods …
Citizen Engagement In Budget Simulation: Examining The Effectiveness Of Balancing Act Modules In Aligning Public Priorities And Allocation Choices, Frankline Muthomi
Citizen Engagement In Budget Simulation: Examining The Effectiveness Of Balancing Act Modules In Aligning Public Priorities And Allocation Choices, Frankline Muthomi
Public Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations
This study investigates the extent to which individuals exhibit consistency in their preferences during sequential budget simulation exercises, as well as the factors that shape these preferences. Grounded in behavioral and citizen participation frameworks, the analysis demonstrates that the simultaneous use of priority-setting and budget-balancing modules encourages participants to allocate resources in ways that reflect their previously articulated priorities. While instances of inconsistency remain common, preference consistency is associated with participants’ sustained support for their favored programs, their commitment to ensuring adequate resource allocation, and, to some extent, their willingness to finance these programs. The findings suggest that the integrated …

Patient-Identified Reasons For Premature Termination: A Systematic Review, Jack N. Mizrahi M.S.
Patient-Identified Reasons For Premature Termination: A Systematic Review, Jack N. Mizrahi M.S.
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Premature unilateral termination has been estimated to occur in approximately 20% of patients seeking psychotherapy. Research has identified a variety of factors including patient, therapist and treatment variables that may contribute to psychotherapy dropout. There is currently quite limited research on patients’ perspective of premature termination, with much of our understanding based on therapist’s perspective. Although therapist perspectives are an important source of information regarding premature termination, therapist judgments about patient progress are often inaccurate, and therapists consistently struggle with foreseeing unilateral termination. In addition, therapists have been found to attribute premature termination more to patient factors than their own …
Prodigal Daughters: The Crisis Facing Generation Z Women, Kristin Brouwer
Prodigal Daughters: The Crisis Facing Generation Z Women, Kristin Brouwer
Doctor of Ministry
Why are Generation Z women (born approximately between 1997 and 2012), increasingly leaving organized Christian religion in the United States? This question became personal in my office at a Christian liberal arts college, where national statistics took on the faces and stories of students I teach and mentor. For the first time in American history, young men are now more religious than young women, and nearly four in ten Gen Z women identify as religiously unaffiliated. Yet their departure is not primarily a rejection of God; it is a rejection of distorted representations of God, faith, and church.

The Importance Of Mental Health Education In The Black Church: Exploring Mental Health And Trauma Through A Biblical Lens, Navita Kj Johnson-Belcher
The Importance Of Mental Health Education In The Black Church: Exploring Mental Health And Trauma Through A Biblical Lens, Navita Kj Johnson-Belcher
Doctor of Ministry
The Black church has historically served as a cornerstone for African American spiritual and communal life yet faces significant challenges in addressing mental health needs rooted in generational trauma and systemic oppression. This dissertation explores the crisis of silence surrounding mental health in Black church contexts, where stigma, pastoral limitations, and historical mistrust of institutional systems create barriers to healing. Through examination of biblical perspectives on suffering, church-based mental health programs, and emerging digital ministry models, this study demonstrates that online platforms can effectively integrate trauma-informed care with theological education.
The research presents a digital, trauma-informed, biblically-based, mental health education …
