Developing Design Principles For Multimodal Connection: A Case Study Of The Commerce Bridge Corridor In Dallas, Texas, Panisa Thanpaisarnsamut
Developing Design Principles For Multimodal Connection: A Case Study Of The Commerce Bridge Corridor In Dallas, Texas, Panisa Thanpaisarnsamut
Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses
Downtown Dallas has undergone substantial growth, yet major streets and bridge corridors continue to prioritize vehicular movement, resulting in fragmented and uncomfortable pedestrian environments. This condition is especially evident along the Commerce Bridge corridor, where narrow sidewalks, high traffic volumes, and unclear crossings limit safe and accessible movement between Downtown and West Dallas. Although several parks and public spaces lie in close proximity, the lack of continuous and legible routes prevents these areas from functioning as a connected system.
This thesis investigates how the Commerce Bridge corridor can be transformed into a multimodal connection that supports movement, safety, and user …
Examining The Paradoxical Effects Of Benevolent Sexism, Serena Rose Bonomo
Examining The Paradoxical Effects Of Benevolent Sexism, Serena Rose Bonomo
Selected Full-Text Dissertations 2020-
Benevolent sexism can be flattering on the surface, though is based on and perpetuates the same stereotypes as hostile sexism (Glick & Fiske, 1996; 1997). Research has demonstrated benevolent sexism exposure increases body shame in adult women, however this effect remains largely unexplained. The current study investigated the mediating effects of self-objectification (viewing oneself as an object) and system justification beliefs (believing that society is just and fair) to explain the positive relationship between exposure to benevolent sexism and body shame. Using an experimental paradigm, this study exposed a sample of adult women in the United States (N = 152) …
De Novo Review For Asylum At The Circuit Court Level: Comparing A Stringent Standard Of Review For Asylum Seekers In The U.S. To The European Court Of Human Rights’ Standard, Dani Gómez
Human Rights Brief
On March 14, 2022, an immigration judge (IJ) denied the asylum applications of Douglas Humberto Urias-Orellana, Sayra Iliana Gamez-Mejia, and their child, ordering them removed to El Salvador. Urias-Orellana and his family had been placed in removal proceedings with
the Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR) and filed applications for asylum. At the individual merits hearing, the IJ ruled that the threats were “insufficiently menacing” to constitute persecution. The Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) affirmed. On further appeal, the First Circuit denied review, holding that courts may not re-evaluate the conclusions drawn from the factual findings de novo unless “any …
Legacy Phosphorus Dynamics In Subtropical River Sediments: Impacts Of Dredging And Water Column Aeration Status, Lee Potter, John R. White
Legacy Phosphorus Dynamics In Subtropical River Sediments: Impacts Of Dredging And Water Column Aeration Status, Lee Potter, John R. White
Faculty Publications
Excessive loading of phosphorus (P) in coastal systems has been a growing concern for watershed managers due to the link with harmful algal blooms. In particular, legacy P creates a persistent challenge for eutrophication management in a range of aquatic systems, including wetlands, lakes, and estuaries, as a source of indirect, internal P loading. Following reductions in external P loads, internal sediment sources have been known to release bioavailable P back into the water column, undermining nutrient restoration goals. This study investigates the flux dynamics and longevity of sediment legacy P in three subtropical rivers—Amite, Tangipahoa, and Tickfaw—draining into the …

Physics Faculty Publications
Here, we report the X-ray structural analysis of dihydroorotase from Methanococcus jannaschii co-crystallized with dihydroorotate at pH 6.5. The crystals are isomorphous with the crystals of the apoenzyme, with space group P3221 and unit-cell dimensions a = b = 111.4, c = 101.2 Å. The structure was refined to R = 0.169 and Rfree = 0.186 at a resolution of 1.87 Å at room temperature. During crystallization the degradative reaction took place, and the electron density in the active site corresponds to the substrate carbamoyl aspartate. Carbamoyl aspartate interacts with the protein in the active site …

Main Areas Of International Activity Of Ukrainian Christian Churches, Yuliia Kondratiuk, Olha Hordiichuk, Iryna Vitiuk, Oleh Sokolovskyi
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The article analyzes the international activities of the main Christian denominations in Ukraine (the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and Protestant denominations) in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian war, which has been ongoing since 2014 and became full-scale in 2022. The war has radically changed the priorities of all denominations: from classical ecumenism and missionary work to mass humanitarian aid, the protection of religious freedom, and countering Russia's use of religion as an instrument of aggression. Despite repression, the destruction of more than 630 religious buildings, and the deaths of dozens of clergy, Ukrainian churches have …
The Impact Of Nurse-Led Distraction Techniques On Pain And Anxiety During Cancer Treatment In Pediatric Oncology Patients: Examining Virtual Reality And Play Therapy, Alexis Abalos
Nursing | Senior Theses
Children undergoing cancer treatment often experience pain and anxiety during cancer treatment, including chemotherapeutic invasive procedures such as frequent port access or peripheral catheterization. Nurse-led distraction techniques, including virtual reality and play therapy, have emerged as promising non-pharmacologic interventions to reduce levels of pain and anxiety in pediatric oncology patients. This thesis analyzes existing data through a close examination of primary and secondary research articles that prove the effectiveness of virtual reality and play therapy on reducing pain, anxiety, and psychosocial distress in pediatric oncology patients receiving cancer treatment. Using the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Symptom Management Theory, …

The Kids Are Alright: A Preliminary Investigation Of The Effectiveness Of A Microaggression Training Series For Adolescents, Brea M. Banks, Bianca Sierra, Khyati Verma, Giselle Rivera
Faculty Publications – Psychology
Microaggressions are identity-based indignities that lead to significant negative consequences for receivers. Although most research has focused on the microaggressive experiences of adults, adolescents experience these transgressions in schools, and they find these experiences offensive. As such, preparing high school students to address microaggressions when they receive or witness them and to respond appropriately when they receive feedback about their microaggressive behaviour is imperative. Using a quasi-experimental design, we conducted a preliminary investigation of the effectiveness of a microintervention training for adolescents at a high school in the Midwestern United States. The intervention was effective in producing improvement in assessed …
“I Have Already Lost My Kids”: Mothering Experiences Of Women In Jail, Bothwell Piason, Dawn Beichner-Thomas
“I Have Already Lost My Kids”: Mothering Experiences Of Women In Jail, Bothwell Piason, Dawn Beichner-Thomas
Faculty Publications - Criminal Justice Sciences
Although women represent a small proportion of the incarcerated population globally, their rate of incarceration in the United States has increased dramatically over the past four decades, outpacing that of men. As carceral trends return to pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels, jail populations continue to rise, with most incarcerated women being mothers of young children. Yet, research on motherhood behind bars has largely focused on prisons rather than jails. This study explores the mothering experiences of women incarcerated in two U.S. Midwestern jails, including both pretrial detainees and sentenced individuals. Using qualitative data from in-depth interviews with jailed mothers, the analysis examines …
Linking Women’S Empowerment And Community Contexts To Intimate Partner Violence: Evidence From Ten West African Countries, Winfred A. Avogo
Linking Women’S Empowerment And Community Contexts To Intimate Partner Violence: Evidence From Ten West African Countries, Winfred A. Avogo
Faculty Publications – Sociology and Anthropology
Abstract Purpose Intimate partner violence (IPV) is experienced by over one-third of women in sub-Saharan Africa, yet evidence on the associations between women’s empowerment, community contexts, and IPV risk remains limited and inconsistent. This study examines the association between individual empowerment and community socioeconomic conditions and different forms of IPV across West Africa, using the Survey-based Women’s Empowerment Index. Method Demographic and Health Survey data (2018–2022) from ten West African countries were pooled, yielding a sample of 38,434 ever-married or cohabiting women who completed the domestic violence module. Multilevel binary logistic regression models estimated associations between empowerment dimensions, community characteristics, …

Liver X Receptor Α (Lxrα) Regulates 5Β-Reductase (Akr1d1) Expression In Avian Embryos: Implications For Yolk Steroid Metabolism, Ryan T. Paitz, Sara E. Waters, Delaney K. Reynolds, Emily M. Drew, Emily P. Harders
Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences
Steroid-mediated maternal effects are well-studied as a source of phenotypic variation. In bird eggs, the yolk contains various steroids that can influence embryonic development. However, one complicating factor in understanding how yolk steroids affect development is that the embryo metabolizes yolk steroids to regulate exposure. The 5β-reduction of steroids by the enzyme 5β-reductase (AKR1D1) has been identified as a pathway through which yolk progesterone, testosterone, and corticosterone are all metabolized early in avian development. We set out to characterize the mechanism through which AKR1D1 expression is regulated in chickens (Gallus gallus) during embryonic development. We found …

Adolescents’ Experiences With Romantic Activities: A Typology Approach And Associations With Well-Being, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Gabrielle C. Kline
Faculty Publications - Family and Consumer Sciences
The purpose of this study was to provide adolescent researchers and those who work with adolescents in applied contexts with a picture of contemporary adolescents’ romantic involvement. Data were from 354 adolescents (15 to 18 years-old), living in the United States. We conducted a latent profile analysis of nine romantic activities, identifying three patterns of romantic involvement: romantic explorers; abstainers; and digitally and dyadically experienced. Romantic explorers (41.5% of sample) primarily participated in low intensity, exploratory activities such as crushes, socializing, and talking. Abstainers (44.1% of sample) had not participated in most of the romantic activities. The digitally and dyadically …
Advancing Screening For Intimate Partner Violence In Pregnant Individuals Throughout The Perinatal Period To Prevent Adverse Pregnancy And Maternal Outcomes, Emilia R. Valdez
Advancing Screening For Intimate Partner Violence In Pregnant Individuals Throughout The Perinatal Period To Prevent Adverse Pregnancy And Maternal Outcomes, Emilia R. Valdez
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background: Intimate Partner Violence experienced by pregnant individuals contributes to adverse pregnancy outcomes and maternal health. A mother’s exposure to Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) can affect their ability to carry a healthy pregnancy to term (38 – 40 weeks gestational age) and places them at risk for comorbidities including; Preterm birth, Intrauterine Growth Restriction, Low Birth Weight/ Small for Gestational Age, Premature Rupture of Membranes and Miscarriage. The incidence of IPV screening is not accessible to all pregnant individuals due to healthcare providers lack of education, time constraints in the workplace, bias and discomfort towards IPV. The implementation of IPV …

How Instructor Engagement Shapes Nursing Students’ Perceptions And Specialty Preference, Marissa M. Sigel
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background: As nursing students approach graduation, choosing a specialty becomes a key decision. Although clinical rotations offer exposure to different practice areas, the role of the clinical instructor is equally influential. Instructor engagement extends beyond teaching skills and may shape how students perceive clinical environments. Objective: This study examines how clinical instructor engagement influences senior nursing students’ specialty preferences. Method: A longitudinal cohort design will be used with pre-licensure BSN students at a small private university in Northern California. Students will complete the same survey twice during their program, and paired t-tests will be used to assess changes in specialty …
The Supreme Court And Public Law In 2023, Kate Glover Berger
The Supreme Court And Public Law In 2023, Kate Glover Berger
The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This article discusses the Supreme Court of Canada’s public law judgments in 2023. It was the basis for the opening address at the 27th Annual Osgoode Hall Law School Constitutional Cases Conference. In the Conference’s tradition, this annual review is divided into two parts. The first part (Part II of the article, following Part I: Introduction) presents institutional and quantitative data about the Court’s work in 2023. It focuses on the composition of the Court, the historically low number of judgments released in 2023, rates of agreement and dissent, and the dominance of public law on the Court’s docket in …
Safety Valves In Charter Analysis:A Quick Fix Rather Than A Structural Solution, Jamie Chai Yun Liew
Safety Valves In Charter Analysis:A Quick Fix Rather Than A Structural Solution, Jamie Chai Yun Liew
The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
A safety valve is a flap, lid or device that acts as a fail-safe. For those unfortunate to have experienced backflow into your home, a safety valve installed in a sewer line permits wastewater to exit while blocking unwanted backflow. It is a reliable and indispensable tool in this context. The legal world has adopted this term in constitutional analyses. This paper examines whether legal safety valves do provide relief. First, the paper provides an overview of how safety valves have been installed in the Supreme Court of Canada’s legal analyses. Then the paper provides a sober discussion of how …

Always Elsewhere: Constitutional Rights In Ccr, Audrey Macklin, Josh Blum
The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
The Canada-United States Safe Third Country Agreement (“STCA”) requires refugee claimants travelling overland to seek protection in the first country of arrival as between Canada and the United States. The Federal Court determined that the United States’ detention practices did not comply with minimum human rights standards, such that Canada breached section 7 obligations to the applicant refugee claimants by deflecting them back to the United States. The Federal Court of Appeal overturned the decision, and the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed the appeal. The authors review the CCR judgment and present it as a cautionary tale about how a …
A Necessary Realignment:Section 7 Engagement In Canadian Council For Refugees, Jacqueline Swaisland, Alison Imrie
A Necessary Realignment:Section 7 Engagement In Canadian Council For Refugees, Jacqueline Swaisland, Alison Imrie
The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This paper explains how the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in Canadian Council for Refugees repudiates decades of section 7 jurisprudence in the immigration law context and mandates that it be realigned with the section 7 jurisprudence outside of it. The paper sets out how Courts in the immigration context continue to apply decades-old jurisprudence which unilaterally declared that section 7 cannot be engaged by a person’s removal from Canada. It also explains how the Courts incorporated a remoteness barrier into the causation analysis which further prevented section 7 scrutiny of government action in the immigration context in all but …
Murray-Hall V. Québec (Attorney General):Reconciling The Criminal Law Power With Cooperative Federalism, Yashoda Ranganathan, Hera Evans
Murray-Hall V. Québec (Attorney General):Reconciling The Criminal Law Power With Cooperative Federalism, Yashoda Ranganathan, Hera Evans
The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
Murray-Hall v. Québec (Attorney General) provides needed certainty and coherence regarding the scope of the criminal law power. Murray-Hall reconciles the criminal law power with the principle of cooperative federalism which favours giving effect to legislation of the provinces and federal government enacted within their respective (potentially overlapping) areas of legislative competence. An expansive interpretation of the criminal law power could upset the balance between federal and provincial powers articulated in section 91 and section 92 of the Constitution Act, 1867. Murray-Hall articulates three principles that limit the scope of the criminal law power, helping to reconcile the criminal law …
Prescribing Plenary Powers:The Evolution And Intersection Of Criminal Andhealth Jurisdiction In Canadian Federalism, Benjamin Perryman
Prescribing Plenary Powers:The Evolution And Intersection Of Criminal Andhealth Jurisdiction In Canadian Federalism, Benjamin Perryman
The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
Using the Supreme Court of Canada’s recent decision in Murray-Hall v. Québec (Attorney General) as a focal point, this paper tracks the evolution and intersection of the federal criminal law power and the provincial health law power in Canadian federalism cases. Part II of the paper examines existing methods used to prescribe plenary powers, including interpretative narrowing (formalism), expansion of concurrent federalism (double aspect), and purpose review (colourability). The paper shows that the Supreme Court of Canada has applied these prescriptions to the federal criminal law power but rarely to the provincial health law power. Part III looks around the …
The Legality Of Incorporating Provincial Law Into A Criminal Offence, Colton Fehr
The Legality Of Incorporating Provincial Law Into A Criminal Offence, Colton Fehr
The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
The drafters of the 1867 Constitution Act were unmoved by the argument that the substantive criminal law ought to be crafted by each individual province as a means to preserve regional values. They instead assigned the criminal law power to the federal government to better promote legal stability and clarity when the state attempts to deprive a citizen of their liberty. A recently rejuvenated practice of incorporating provincial offences within the definition of criminal offences unfortunately ignores the rationale underlying this division of authority. Identifying this inconsistency would have proven useful in Murray-Hall v. Québec (Attorney General) as a more …
Understanding Public Support For Courts In Canada, Erin Crandall, Andrea Lawlor
Understanding Public Support For Courts In Canada, Erin Crandall, Andrea Lawlor
The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
Do Canadian citizens support their courts, and what factors influence that support? While it is well recognized that public confidence in the judicial branch is crucial for its effective functioning, how to measure and analyze this confidence is debated. This article explores how social scientists conceptualize and study trust and perceptions of legitimacy in courts. Using data from the Canada Election Studies spanning 2008 to 2021 and an original survey conducted in 2023, this article provides an overview of the current state of trust in Canadian courts, the known correlates of confidence, and recommendations for maintaining public support. We find …
From Margarine To Cannabis:The Ongoing Evolution Of The Criminal Law Power, Asha Kaushal, Robert Danay
From Margarine To Cannabis:The Ongoing Evolution Of The Criminal Law Power, Asha Kaushal, Robert Danay
The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This paper examines the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in Murray-Hall v. Quebéc (Attorney General), upholding Québec’s restrictions on personal cultivation and possession of cannabis despite federal legalization. This decision is contextualized within a broader empirical analysis of the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence on the criminal law power under section 91(27) of the Constitution Act, 1867. By systematically reviewing Supreme Court cases from the Margarine Reference to Murray-Hall, the authors identify two trends: (1) increasing judicial deference to provincial legislative jurisdiction in criminal law matters since the enactment of the Charter, and (2) a continued judicial willingness to limit federal jurisdiction …

Equality Rights And The Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, Sharryn J. Aiken, Colin Grey
The Supreme Court Law Review, Third Series: Osgoode's Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
Under the Canada-United States Safe Third Country Agreement (“STCA”), Canadian immigration officials return refugee protection claimants arriving from the United States to have their claims determined in that country, and vice versa. This paper tries to tease out the equality rights arguments under section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms likely to be advanced in an ongoing constitutional challenge to the STCA and its implementing regulations. The paper briefly explores why equality rights challenges have often been given short shrift in cases involving “migration control”. We argue such cursory treatment is inappropriate in the challenge to the …
The Relationship Between Registered Nurse Burnout, Organizational Engagement, And Quality Outcomes In Acute Care Hospitals, James E. Parsons
The Relationship Between Registered Nurse Burnout, Organizational Engagement, And Quality Outcomes In Acute Care Hospitals, James E. Parsons
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Registered Nurse (RN) burnout remains a significant challenge in acute care hospitals, with far-reaching consequences for staff well-being, organizational performance, and patient care outcomes. Characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment, burnout among RNs contributes to decreased job satisfaction, increased turnover, and compromised care quality. Despite extensive research on burnout, few studies have integrated theoretical frameworks such as the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) with large-scale, nationally representative data to empirically test how burnout influences organizational engagement and healthcare quality outcomes.
This quantitative, non-experimental study examined relationships among RN burnout, organizational engagement, and patient care …

Genetic Determinants Associated With Persistence Of Listeria Species And Background Microflora From A Dairy Processing Environment, Vaishali Poswal, Sanjeev Anand, Jose L. Gonzalez-Hernandez, Brian Kraus
Dairy Science and Food Science Faculty Publications: 2022 to Present
Listeria monocytogenes is a persistent foodborne pathogen capable of surviving in food processing environments, often in association with diverse environmental microflora. This study examines genomic determinants of persistence, specifically stress adaptation and biofilm-associated traits, in environmental Listeria species and other environmental microflora from a dairy processing facility by analyzing whole-genome sequences of 6 environmental Listeria isolates, 4 ATCC reference strains, and 22 air and floor swab cultures, annotated using the RAST platform. Subsystem analysis revealed that Listeria isolates carried a defined set of genes linked to biofilm formation, antimicrobial resistance, and stress response, though in lower abundance than environmental cultures. …
