The Crucible Of Marriage: Faith, Formation, And Spiritual Autonomy In Jane Eyre, Diana Pitsch Jan 2026

The Crucible Of Marriage: Faith, Formation, And Spiritual Autonomy In Jane Eyre, Diana Pitsch

Masters Theses

This thesis treats marriage in Jane Eyre as the crucible of Jane's unique, experiential, and individually crafted faith. It examines marriage as the primary arena in which Jane's faith is shaped, tested, and, ultimately, fulfilled. Situated within Victorian Evangelical culture and restrictive gender ideology, the study examines how Jane’s spirituality is shaped through personal discernment rather than submission to institutional authority. Through close readings of Gateshead, Lowood, and Jane’s encounters with Rochester and St. John Rivers, the thesis demonstrates how Jane’s faith is tested against both passionate attachment and prescribed religious duty. Her refusal of both proposals reveals a developing …

The Mono Basin Project: Remedying Environmental Injustice Through Tribal Beneficial Use Designations, Molly Greene Jan 2026

The Mono Basin Project: Remedying Environmental Injustice Through Tribal Beneficial Use Designations, Molly Greene

UC Law Environmental Journal

Due to a history of violence, dispossession, and racism, Native American tribes in California face structural disadvantages and inequities with respect to water rights. At the same time, tribes lack meaningful legal remedies to gain access to the water resources necessary to maintain their ways of life. One key issue is that California water agencies traditionally did not consider tribal water uses when implementing water quality control laws, leaving such uses unprotected. For years, tribes have urged the State to fill in these gaps in the law by adopting tribal beneficial uses (“TBUs”), which would protect tribal water uses, such …

Recognizing Arab Climate Refugees Under Both International And Regional Law, Fatemah Albader, Rahima Musaliar Jan 2026

Recognizing Arab Climate Refugees Under Both International And Regional Law, Fatemah Albader, Rahima Musaliar

UC Law Environmental Journal

Climate change is increasingly displacing populations worldwide, yet existing international and regional legal frameworks, including the 1951 Refugee Convention and the Arab Charter on Human Rights, fail to recognize climate refugees as a protected category. These legal instruments define refugees narrowly, limiting protection to individuals fleeing persecution on specific grounds such as race, religion, or political opinion. As climate change accelerates environmental degradation, resulting in extreme weather events, desertification, and resource scarcity, millions of people are being forced to migrate, often across international borders, without legal recourse or asylum rights. This Article argues that climate refugees should be afforded the …

The Esg Disclosure Paradox: Gaps In Environmental Justice Criteria, Barbara Ballan Jan 2026

The Esg Disclosure Paradox: Gaps In Environmental Justice Criteria, Barbara Ballan

UC Law Environmental Journal

Environmental Justice (“EJ”) and Environmental Social Governance (“ESG”) are terms used to address the impacts of corporate actions as well as environmental and social regulation on the people and the planet. ESG disclosure is a corporate-driven invention that aims to measure progress towards sustainability and disclose environmental and social criteria while fostering value for businesses. EJ, by contrast, emerged as a social movement that evolved into regulatory frameworks. Governmental agencies and EJ advocates are utilizing EJ mapping tools and metrics to assess inequalities in environmental impacts caused by private and public policy and decision-making. Though these concepts may initially create …

Drug Education: The Gaps In Rural Versus Urban Communities, Madilyn Mages

Honors Capstone Projects

Drug education is often lacking in rural communities due to lack of access and lower quality of education causing an increase in youth using substances and drug overdoses. Looking at previous research, there is a definite gap in rural and urban adult and youth substance use. The research showed that higher levels of education show less risk of substance use issues. Research also looked at new programs and how they worked in urban areas to decrease risky substance use behavior. This is a call for new programs to be created for rural communities due to their differences. This research explores …

The Case For A Moratorium On Deep-Sea Mining: The International Seabed Authority, Indigenous Rights, And Marine Ecosystems In The Eastern Pacific, Afrah A. Qoqandi

UC Law Environmental Journal

The rising interest in deep-sea commercial exploitation has sparked a powerful debate over the environmental and social justice implications of mining the ocean’s depths for valuable minerals. Deep-sea mining targets polymetallic nodules found on the seabed, containing metals critical for green technologies like electric vehicles and solar cells. The Clarion-Clipperton Zone (“CCZ”) in the eastern Pacific is estimated to hold more nickel, manganese, and cobalt than all terrestrial resources combined. As one of the last largely untouched ecosystems, deep-sea mining in the CCZ raises significant concerns about the irreversible harm to its biodiversity and the disruption to Indigenous communities reliant …

Determination Of Sample Size In Vaccine Trials, Meghna Bose Jan 2026

Determination Of Sample Size In Vaccine Trials, Meghna Bose

Doctoral Theses

Sample size determination is an important as well as delicate problem in clinical trials. Often, prior information available before the beginning of the trial is used to estimate the sample size. Hence, it is of importance to quantify the prior information available in terms of an Effective Sample Size (ESS). The problem of finding Effective Sample Size (ESS) in Phase II clinical trials, where toxicity and efficacy are the two components of the treatment response vector, is considered. In particular, one of the components is assumed to be binary, and the other is assumed to be continuous. Theoretical expressions for …

Expansion Of Federal Benefits To Non-Native Adopted Children, Anna-Grace Hockensmith Jan 2026

Expansion Of Federal Benefits To Non-Native Adopted Children, Anna-Grace Hockensmith

American Indian Law Journal

There is palpable tension between tribal sovereignty and federal administrative control in the distribution of federal benefits to members of Tribal Nations. This tension is felt by adopted non-Native children who might struggle to receive federal benefits even though the tribe of their adopted parent(s) has accepted them as a member. This Note explores how adoption of a non-Native child by a tribal member intersects with tribal membership and whether that membership should be enough for the child to receive federal benefits.

The Note discusses four main topics, including: (1) tribal membership, adoption, and current federal enrollment criteria; (2) an …

Bhc Hosts Two Events To Promote Brain Health Across The Community, University Of Dayton. School Of Education And Health Sciences

School of Education and Health Sciences Blog Archive

At its most basic, a collective is a group of individuals who work together toward a common goal. The term usuallyexplains a group that doesn’t have a strict hierarchy (more on that later), but that makes decisions, you guessed it,collectively. So, when the Brain Health Collective (BHC) gets together, that’s exactly what they do. They bring in experts (those with lived experience, professionals, families, and friends of individuals who have experienced brain injuries) who all bring their wisdom, experience, and networks to better serve our community.
