Aging of the blood system impacts systemic health and can be traced to hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). Despite multiple reports on human HSC aging, a unified map detailing their molecular age-related changes is lacking. We developed a consensus map of gene expression in HSCs by integrating seven single-cell datasets. This map reveals previously unappreciated heterogeneity within the HSC population. It also links inflammatory pathway activation (TNF/NFκB, AP-1) and quiescence within a single gene expression program. This program dominates an inflammatory HSC subpopulation that increases with age, highlighting a potential target for further experimental studies and anti-aging interventions.

The co-occurrence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and nanoplastics (NPs) poses a synergistic threat to environmental and human health, yet the molecular mechanisms governing PFAS–NP complexation and membrane interactions remain unclear. Using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the adsorption of neutral polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and anionic perfluorinated compounds (perfluorooctanoic acid, PFOA, and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, PFOS) on polystyrene NPs (3.1 and 6.7 nm) and their interactions with 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) membranes. Polystyrene NPs act as carriers, transporting PFAS molecules to the lipid/water interface, where PFAS attachment modifies NP interfacial behavior. PFAS adsorption on the NP surface is driven by …

Noninvasive Condition Monitoring For Eccentricity Fault Detection In Large Hydro Generators, Atena Tazikeh Lemeski, Di̇dem Tekgün, Ozan Keysan, Kemal Leblebi̇ci̇oğlu, Murat Göl

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Eccentricity faults in electric machines remain a critical concern, as they generate uneven magnetic forces that increase vibration and noise, ultimately raising the risk of premature motor failure. This study proposes a method for the early detection of dynamic eccentricity (DE) faults in hydropower plants through an advanced optimization-based parameter identification technique integrated with finite element analysis (FEA). Finite element modeling (FEM) is first used to analyze an existing salient-pole synchronous generator (SPSG) from a hydroelectric power plant in Türkiye. The effects of DE faults on the SPSG’s magnetic equivalent circuit parameters are then examined under various fault severities. A …

A Deep Learning Model For Accurate Tomato Leaf Disease Identification, Maheen Shahzad, Muhammad Abdullah Javed, Erum Ashraf, Hafiz Ishfaq Ahmad, Sabeen Masood

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Recent advances in machine learning and deep learning have greatly improved how we detect plant diseases, making diagnoses more accurate, faster, and easier to scale. However, many existing solutions depend on large, pretrained models that need powerful hardware, which limits their use in the field, especially in areas with limited resources. To tackle this, we designed a custom lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) built from scratch using 20,000 carefully selected images from the PlantVillage tomato dataset. Our model uses Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) blocks and Swish activation functions to boost performance, reaching an accuracy of 97.7% while using far fewer computing resources …

A Novel Approach To Maximum Weighted Traffic Flow Method For Effective Signal Control, Zülal Hi̇lal Yildiz Budak, Seyi̇t Alperen Çeltek, Aki̇f Durdu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Traffic signal management is a critical challenge due to its environmental, economic, and public health impacts. The maximum weighted flow method (MaxWeightedFlow) was developed to optimize traffic flow at isolated and coordinated urban intersections. This study proposes a new method, the novel MaxWeightedFlow, which includes two key strategies to enhance the classical approach. The first strategy reduces computational burden by estimating vehicle approach times based on instantaneous speeds, improving real-time performance. The second employs regression analysis to optimize the alpha parameter, representing the vehicle waiting coefficient. The proposed approach, the novel MaxWeightedFlow, was evaluated using real-world traffic data from Kilis, …

Peninsula Medical School

Introduction: The Trail Making Test (TMT) is an important test when assessing for cognitive difficulties in people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). However, the pencil-and-paper format can be susceptible to administration and scoring errors and may disproportionately reflect motor impairments rather than cognitive performance. The current study sought to evaluate the reliability and diagnostic accuracy of two novel computerized versions of the TMT: iTMT-Tap and iTMT-Drag. Method: This study used a quasi-experimental diagnostic accuracy design, and included 34 healthy controls, 28 people with Parkinson’s disease with normal cognition (PD-NC), and 31 people with Parkinson’s disease mild cognitive impairment (PD-MCI). Participants were …

Ai Derivation And Exploration Of Antibiotic Class Spaces, Adam Bess, Sean Rowland, Chris Alvin, Supratik Mukhopadhyay

Open Access Fund Publications

Purpose The rapid evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses an urgent global health crisis. A key gap in current antibiotic discovery approaches is the absence of automated chemical synthesis methods designed to systematically generate and evaluate compounds within specific antibiotic classes. We address this gap through fragment-based computational experiments that systematically explore antibiotic chemical spaces.

Methods Our computational methodology consists of three steps: fragmentation of known compounds (eMolFrag), generating new molecular structures by recombining fragments (eSynth), and filtering of candidates based on desired properties (eFilter). eFilter combines structural analysis, pathway information, and protein targets …

Student Disruptions And Teacher Turnover, Kyuhan Choi, Ying Shi, Maria Zhu Jan 2026

Student Disruptions And Teacher Turnover, Kyuhan Choi, Ying Shi, Maria Zhu

Center for Policy Research

This paper examines how exposure to disruptive students affects teacher retention using linked teacher–student administrative records from North Carolina. To address non-random classroom assignment, we instrument for classroom exposure using the school-by-grade share of disruptive students based on prior-year disciplinary infractions. A 10 percentage point increase in the share of disruptive students raises the probability of an early-career teacher leaving the school in the following year by 1.0 percentage points. Notably, working in a school environment with supportive leadership and greater teacher autonomy, particularly around student conduct policies, mitigates the impact of student disruptions.

Extra-Axial Cerebrospinal Fluid Volumes From 6 To 24 Months Of Age Are Associated With Poorer Executive Function At School-Age In Children With And Without Autism, Yichi Zhang, Robert C Mckinstry, Natasha Marrus, John R Pruett Jr., Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Abnormally increased extra-axial cerebrospinal fluid (EA-CSF) volume is present as early as 6 months in infants later diagnosed with autism and is associated with symptom severity at the age of diagnosis, but it is unknown whether early EA-CSF enlargement has long-term impacts on other clinical domains. Executive function (EF) deficits are frequently observed in children with autism and are linked with worse academic outcomes, higher anxiety, and lower adaptive functioning. The current study examines the association between EA-CSF volume at infancy and EF at school age in a longitudinally phenotyped cohort of children with either high (HL) or low …

Fda's New Approval Plan For Covid-19 Vaccines: An Inquiry Of "Benefit" Rather Than The Statutory Scope Of "Safety, Purity, And Potency"?, Henry Yat-Shing Kwan

Journal of Law and Health

This article analyzes the FDA's proposed policy plan issued in May 2025 regarding the approval of Covid-19 boosters for different groups of persons. It offers two constructive recommendations that will help prevent constitutionality challenge on impermissible intrusion of the freedom of health.

The first is to avoid using the confusing term "benefit" but instead focus on the statutory parameters of "safety, purity, and potency." The affected group can make a strong case that their free choice of vaccination should not be deprived, as long as the vaccine qualifies for the statutory thresholds of being safe, pure, and potent. They are …

Probability Cueing In Large-Scale Environmental Search: The Role Of Landmark Cues In Statistical Learning, Shaun Dordoy, Rory Baxter, Alastair Smith

School of Psychology

Efficient environmental search is an important and adaptive everyday skill. A particular feature of theoretical interest is whether large-scale search is informed by the spatial statistics of the environment - probability cueing is a robust effect in two-dimensional visual search tasks, but studies of large-scale search have generated equivocal findings. Here, we examined whether sensitivity to a statistical cue specified within an allocentric reference frame is modulated by the presence and location of environmental landmarks. Participants explored fully immersive virtual environments, wherein they were presented with an array of locations (columns) and required to search them for a hidden target …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Creating genetic sensors for noninvasive visualization of biological activities in optically opaque tissues holds immense potential for basic research and the development of genetic and cell-based therapies. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) stands out among deep tissue imaging methods for its ability to generate high-resolution images without ionizing radiation. However, the adoption of MRI as a mainstream biomolecular technology has been hindered by the lack of adaptable methods to link molecular events with genetically encodable contrast. Here, we introduce modular aquaporin-based protease-activatable probes for enhanced reporting (MAPPER), a platform for the systematic creation of genetic sensors for MRI. To develop MAPPER, …
