Unpacking Domestic Violence Intervention Programs, Lauren Pagan
Unpacking Domestic Violence Intervention Programs, Lauren Pagan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Domestic violence is a public health concern and most existing literature has focused on service delivery for victims, opposed to interventions for perpetrators. The Duluth model is the most common model guiding groups for perpetrators, yet results on its effectiveness have been inconsistent and unclear. Counselors and counselor educators lack the empirical support needed to effectively apply the Duluth model while working with the people who abuse. The purpose of this qualitative, existential–phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of participants in Duluth Model-based, domestic violence intervention programs (DVIPs). Guided by existential–phenomenological theory, this study addressed the research question: …

K-8 School Administrators' Implementation Of Positive Behavior Intervention And Support Systems To Reduce Out-Of-School Suspensions In A Southeastern U.S. School District, Chantell H. Walker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem that was addressed through this study is that the implementation of positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) has not resulted in a consistent reduction in the use of out-of-school suspensions as a disciplinary consequence in K–8 schools in a Southeastern U.S. school district. Grounded in Horner and Sugai’s PBIS, the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore K–8 school administrators’ perceptions of their implementation of PBIS in a Southeastern U.S. school district. For this basic qualitative design, semistructured interviews were conducted with three principals and three assistant principals in the local school district. Thematic analysis using inductive …

Hiv Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Uptake And Continuation Among 15-24-Year-Old Women In Mulago, Uganda, Dithan Kiragga
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Young women in Uganda face disproportionately high HIV risk compared to the general population. While pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) demonstrates proven effectiveness, poor uptake and nonadherence limit its potential impact. This study examined the relationship between perceived HIV susceptibility, PrEP benefits, behavioral risk factors, service delivery models, and PrEP uptake and continuity among young women aged 15–24 in Uganda, guided by the health belief model. Data were ed from surveillance records at Mulago National Referral Hospital’s STI clinic from January 2024 to September 2025. Of N=23,765 young women screened (median age 21 years; 98.9% single or separated; 48.7% with primary education), …

The gut microbiota is crucial to health, yet implementation of microbiota-based therapeutics is limited by the lack of rapid diagnostics. We hypothesize that breath contains gut microbe-derived volatile organic compounds (VOCs) reflecting microbiota composition and metabolism. In healthy children, we found that breath VOC composition (or volatilome), assessed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, correlates with gut microbiome composition and function. By capturing exhaled breath from human-stool-colonized and monocolonized gnotobiotic mice, we profiled breath VOCs and discovered that murine breath is also significantly influenced by the gut microbiome. VOCs from cultured gut microbes were identified in vivo in monocolonized gnotobiotic colonized mice. …

Nitroarene-Mediated Photo-Oxidative Deconstruction And Upcycling Of Unsaturated Rubber Waste, Junpeng Wang, Zefeng Wang, Roberto Obergon, Obed Fernando
University Research
Transforming waste polymers into materials with improved properties offers a compelling strategy for advancing the sustainable use of polymers, echoing the Chinese proverb: “Blue comes from indigo but surpasses it in blueness.” Herein, we report a photo-oxidative deconstruction and upcycling method for unsaturated rubber waste. Under 390 nm LED irradiation at room temperature, in the presence of a nitroarene oxidant, diverse unsaturated polymers─including natural rubber, polybutadiene, nitrile rubber, styrene–butadiene rubber, and even cross-linked nitrile gloves─are selectively converted into carbonyl-terminated oligomers. The aldehyde-functionalized products are cross-linked via dynamic imine chemistry with p-phenylenediamine to yield reprocessable elastomers with markedly improved tensile strength …

The Gene Encoding Ornithine Decarboxylase For Putrescine Biosynthesis Is Essential For The Viability Of Fusobacterium Nucleatum, Shiqi Xu, Bibek G C, Alex Phan, Chenggang Wu
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Fusobacterium nucleatum is a Gram-negative anaerobe associated with periodontitis and colorectal cancer. It secretes putrescine, a polyamine that promotes biofilm formation by oral co-colonizers and enhances the proliferation of cancer cells. However, the physiological importance of putrescine for F. nucleatum itself remains unexplored. Here, we show that putrescine biosynthesis, mediated by the ornithine decarboxylase gene oda, is essential for F. nucleatum viability. Deletion of oda was only possible when a functional copy was provided in trans, and CRISPR interference of oda expression resulted in complete growth defects. The essentiality of oda was conserved across multiple subspecies. Supplementation with …

Cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors (CDK4/6i) combined with endocrine therapy are the standard first-line treatment for hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative (HR+/HER2-) metastatic breast cancer, but resistance inevitably develops. In triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), the efficacy of CDK4/6i remains uncertain. Our study shows that the selective CDK2 inhibitor BLU-222, while effective alone, enhances synergistic activity when combined with CDK4/6i in resistant HR+/HER2- and TNBC models, leading to increased apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. In vivo, combining BLU-222 with palbociclib or ribociclib produced significant antitumor activity across eight resistant models, driving durable tumor regression and prolonged survival. Mechanistically, BLU-222, alone or with palbociclib, upregulated …

Background: Massive transfusion protocols are established in-hospital practices for managing haemorrhagic shock, yet critical bleeding accounts for up to 40% of trauma deaths, with half occurring before hospital arrival. This has driven interest in prehospital transfusion, a concept originating in military settings where early blood product administration during prolonged evacuations demonstrated significant survival benefits. Despite compelling military evidence showing improved 24-h and 30-day survival with prehospital transfusion, civilian adoption faces substantial challenges. Global interest in this domain is increasing, particularly in regions with trauma populations remote from immediate access to major trauma centres.
Main body: Current prehospital transfusion strategies have …

Measures from affinity-proteomics platforms often correlate poorly, challenging interpretation of protein associations with genetic variants and phenotypes. Here, we examine 2157 proteins measured on both SomaScan 7k and Olink Explore 3072 across 1930 participants with genetic similarity to European, African, East Asian, and Admixed American ancestry references. Inter-platform correlation coefficients for these 2157 proteins follow a bimodal distribution (median r = 0.30). We evaluate protein measure associations with genetic variants, and find approximately 25-30% of the signals on each platform are likely driven by protein-altering variants. We highlight 80 proteins that correlate differently across ancestry groups likely in part due …

Kidney toxicity remains a major dose-limiting complication of radiation therapy and platinum-based chemotherapy, yet the molecular determinants of renal susceptibility and resilience to these genotoxic treatments are incompletely understood. Podocytes are particularly vulnerable to such insults, and emerging evidence implicates lipid dysregulation in podocyte injury. This study investigated the role of sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase acid-like 3B (SMPDL3B), a podocyte-enriched lipid-modulating enzyme, in radiation- and cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Using a doxycycline-inducible, podocyte-specific SMPDL3B transgenic mouse model, renal injury was assessed following focal kidney irradiation, cisplatin administration, or their combination through functional assays, histopathology, ultrastructural analysis, immunofluorescence, and targeted lipidomics. Combined radiation and cisplatin …

Age is a major risk factor for lung disease. We characterized the changing cellular, transcriptional, and genomic landscape of human lung aging using single-cell RNA sequencing. We find that lung aging is cell-type dyssynchronous, with alveolar epithelial and endothelial cells exhibiting the greatest transcriptional changes. Among alveolar epithelial cells, aging is associated with a decreased relative proportion of surfactant-expressing SPChigh AT2 cells. Among alveolar capillary cells, we observed loss of differentiation and capillary function. Analysis of somatic mutations called from single-cell data revealed an increase with aging, with alveolar epithelial and endothelial cell types exhibiting greater mutation burdens. Transcriptional entropy …

Long-Term Changes In Relative Humidity And Soil Wetness: Implications On Agriculture And Environmental Sustainability In Western Himalaya, Ashwani Ashwani, Pankaj Kumar
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Long-term climate changes in humidity and soil wetness in the cold deserts of the Western Himalaya are still not well researched. Understanding the long-term trends of relative humidity (RH) and soil moisture is crucial in high-altitude, cold desert regions for effective agricultural management and environmental sustainability. The study was conducted in a part of the western Himalaya, which is an ecologically fragile zone with a highly sensitive agricultural region that is vulnerable to climatic variations. A comprehensive study was conducted to evaluate the spatiotemporal variability of RH and soil wetness by means four techniques: Mann-Kendall, Modified Mann-Kendall, Sen’s slope estimator, …

Autoimmune metaplastic gastritis (AMAG) is a form of autoimmune gastritis that is characterized by the immune system’s attack on gastric parietal cells, leading to chronic inflammation. Gastric neuroendocrine tumors (GNETs) are rare neoplasms that can develop in the gastrointestinal tract in the presence of AMAG. This case presents a 69-year-old female who presented with dyspepsia, and on subsequent endoscopic evaluation, she was found to have AMAG in the context of elevated levels of serum chromogranin A (CgA) and gastrin, suggestive of a GNET. Despite an extensive diagnostic workup, including imaging, colonoscopy, small bowel follow-through, capsule study, and oncology workup, no …

Reverse Micelles Produce Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles As More Efficient Gene Delivery Carriers Than Regular Micelles, Vuk Uskoković
Reverse Micelles Produce Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles As More Efficient Gene Delivery Carriers Than Regular Micelles, Vuk Uskoković
Administration and Staff Articles and Research
Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is an effective inorganic gene delivery carrier due to its ability to transport genetic cargo across cell membranes, protect it from proteolysis, and enable escape from late endosomes via pH-controlled dissolution. However, its transfection efficiency remains lower than that of viral agents, prompting studies of hybrids with cationic molecules or phases to enhance the gene delivery performance. This study reports on the synthesis of HAp in regular and reverse micellar regions of a ternary microemulsion system composed of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), 1-hexanol and water. Spectroscopic characterization revealed that CTAB headgroups adopted more ordered supramolecular conformations in reverse micelles …

Holistic Wellness Frameworks In Higher Education: A Systematic Review Of Impact On Student Well-Being And Academic Outcomes, Charles Rettig
Pacific Journal of Health
Objective: To examine the impact of holistic wellness frameworks on undergraduate students’ well-being, academic performance (GPA), and graduation rates, and to understand student perceptions and engagement factors with programs in higher education.
Background: Undergraduate students face increasing issues like mental health challenges, sleep deprivation, and inadequate physical activity, which significantly impede academic potential and well-being. Although the military’s H2F framework successfully enhances readiness across five integrated pillars, a systematic exploration of a similarly crafted civilian program’s direct influence on student outcomes in higher education remains largely unaddressed.
Methods: A structured electronic search following PRISMA 2020 guidelines across PubMed, GoogleScholar, PacificScholar, …
