Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: The management of head and neck cancer relies on multidisciplinary expertise; however, access to tumor boards remains variable. Large language models (LLMs) may support guideline-based decision-making, although performance in complex oncologic scenarios is not well defined.
METHODS: Fourteen synthetic cases based on real tumor board encounters were evaluated. Five blinded comparator arms produced recommendations: a human expert, Non-RAG-GPT-4, Non-RAG-GPT-5, RAG-GPT-4, and RAG-GPT-5. Eight head and neck oncologic surgeons scored each recommendation for appropriateness, clarity, specificity, and feasibility using 5-point Likert scales. Paired permutation testing and inter-rater reliability were assessed.
RESULTS: LLM outputs showed close alignment with expert recommendations. RAG-based …

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is an immunoregulatory and neurotrophic glycoprotein of potential clinical utility in the neonate at risk for cerebral injury. However, hCG has not been demonstrated to affect the pro-degenerative actions of inflammation in neonatal brain injury. Here we utilize a neonatal mouse model of mild hypoxia-ischemia (HI) combined with intraperitoneal administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to evaluate the neuroprotective actions of hCG in the setting of systemic inflammation. Intraperitoneal treatment with hCG significantly decreased tissue loss and cystic degeneration in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex of term-equivalent neonatal mice exposed to LPS and HI. Noting that parvalbumin immunoreactive …

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a challenging malignancy to treat, but emerging evidence suggests that specific subtypes may respond more favorably to certain therapies. BRCA-mutated PDAC represents a distinct subtype that is particularly sensitive to DNA-damaging therapies. The current standard of care for advanced BRCA-mutated PDAC involves induction platinum-based chemotherapy followed by maintenance therapy with a poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor (PARPi). However, the randomized phase III POLO trial, upon which this standard is based, did not demonstrate an improved overall survival in patients who received olaparib compared to those who received placebo, highlighting the need for new therapeutic approaches. Additionally, …

Higher-Order Moment Risk Spillovers Between The Carbon And Energy Markets Under Climate Policy Uncertainty, Qiang Ji
Double Helix Methodology
Against the backdrop of increasing climate policy uncertainty, preventing cross-market risk contagion in the energy transition is crucial to ensuring energy security and effective risk management. First, this study uses the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity-skewness-kurtosis (GARCHSK) model to measure the higher-order moment risk of the carbon and energy markets. Then, based on the quantile spillover index model, the higher-order moment risk spillover effects and their time-varying characteristics in different risk states are characterized. Furthermore, the climate policy uncertainty index (CPU) is incorporated into the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity-mixed data sampling (GARCH-MIDAS) model to analyze its impact on higher-order moment risk …

The Linkage Of Emissions Trading System And Green Electricity Certificate Brings Economic Benefits In China, An Zeng, Hanchu Liu
Double Helix Methodology
Market-based instruments are becoming increasingly prevalent as crucial components of energy transition policy packages worldwide. Given the interdependence of these instruments, linkage mechanisms have become a priority for policymakers. However, existing literature primarily focuses on the impacts of individual trading systems, with limited attention paid to linkage trading mechanism. To fill this gap, this study proposes an improved centralized resource allocation data envelopment analysis model to simulate the linkage trading of the emissions trading system (ETS) and the green electricity certificate (GEC) scheme in China. A counterfactual scenario simulation is conducted using historical data from 2016 to 2020. The results …

Purpose – This study examines how strategic communication shapes public trust and financial literacy in Hajj fund governance, addressing scarce comparative evidence between fund-based and state-administered models. It contrasts Indonesia’s Hajj Financial Management Agency (BPKH) with Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) to identify which communication elements strengthen pilgrims’ confidence.
Design/methodology/approach – A mixed-methods design combines content analysis of institutional communications with a survey of 320 prospective pilgrims (160 Indonesia; 160 Turkey). The Strategic Hajj Communication Model (SHCM) is developed with four pillars—Digital Outreach, Religious Narrative, Financial Education, and Digital Engagement—and linked to Public Trust (PT), Financial Literacy (FL), and …

International Journal of Islamic Economics and Business Sustainability
Purpose – This study assesses the financial and social (maslahah) efficiency of Indonesia’s Hajj Fund Management Agency (BPKH) over 2018–2024, examining how effectively pilgrimage funds generate returns and public-benefit distributions consistent with Islamic finance principles and BPKH’s mandate.
Design/methodology/approach – An input-oriented Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model under Variable Returns to Scale (VRS) evaluates the transformation of inputs—total managed funds and operational expenditures—into outputs: investment income, benefit disbursements to pilgrims, and allocations to social welfare programs. Data come from BPKH audited annual reports (2018–2024). Robustness is assessed using Bootstrap DEA and Stochastic Frontier Analysis (SFA) to test stability and cross-method …

International Journal of Islamic Economics and Business Sustainability
Purpose - This study investigates the moderating role of democracy in shaping environmental sustainability, measured by CO₂ emissions, across 35 developing member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Design/methodology/approach - A dual-model econometric framework is employed, combining the System Generalized Method of Moments (SYS-GMM) to address endogeneity and dynamic panel bias with the Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model to capture both short-run dynamics and long-run equilibrium. This approach enables a nuanced analysis of how democracy conditions the effects of GDP per capita, agricultural productivity, and renewable energy on emissions.
Findings - The results reveal a complex and …
