Somatic KRAS (KRASG12V) mutation in endothelial cells (EC) induces brain arteriovenous malformation (bAVM) that could lead to vascular instability and ultimately bleeding. However, the causes of bAVM instability remain unclear. Here we demonstrate that KRASG12V expressing cultured ECs (KRAS-G12V-EC) have increased expression of pro-inflammatory mediators and reduced expression of blood-brain-barrier (BBB) junction constituents. The conditioned medium from KRAS-G12V-EC can activate BV2-microglia (BV2-MG) and conditioned media from this primed BV2-MG can compromise the expression of EC-junction constituents when added to wild-type ECs. In an in vitro BBB model, KRAS-G12V-EC form a dysfunctional EC barrier that is further disrupted, leading to lower …

Transformative Technology And Shortening The Statute Of Limitations Applicable To Taxpayers, Jay A. Soled, Leslie Book Feb 2026

Transformative Technology And Shortening The Statute Of Limitations Applicable To Taxpayers, Jay A. Soled, Leslie Book

Faculty Publications

When it comes to submitting tax returns and paying taxes, most taxpayers understand the nature of their civic duties and do so dutifully, if not willingly. However, many taxpayers fail to grasp why the IRS has such an elongated time period—namely, three years— to audit their tax returns and propose an assessment. Indeed, when the IRS exercises its oversight authority, records may no longer be available, and memories may be dulled.

Since the original institution of the three-year tax assessment limitations period nearly a century ago, tremendous technological strides have been made. Indeed, over ninety percent of income tax returns …

Farmers in the North Central United States are at risk of having soybean yield robbed due to infection by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, the causal agent of Sclerotinia stem rot (SSR). While certain management strategies, such as wide row spacings, lower plant populations, and resistant varieties, can reduce SSR development, there is often a negative yield impact associated with these strategies. Conversely, chemical management strategies do not have an associated yield drag, and therefore, they have been the primary tool for suppressing SSR development. Independent chemical programs were evaluated across eight states from 2017 to 2024, resulting in 32 site-years (n = …

Emotional Intelligence And Problem-Solving Correlations And Impact On Employability: A Case Study From The Uae, Ganka Ivanova, Rakan Alhrhasheh

All Works

In this study, we aim to address questions about how UAE Leadership Development Plans and Employability connect with current students in UAE classrooms by evaluating the correlation between the employability of UAE university students and their emotional intelligence (EI) and problem-solving skills. Moreover, we cover what must be considered in the curricula of UAE Universities to prepare future leaders to lead the workforce. To that end, we employed an employability test developed by AQR International UK and collected data from 310 undergraduate students aged 17 to 55. Both EI and problem-solving skills were strongly positively correlated with employability (p < .001). Even though male participants scored higher than female participants for EI and problem-solving skills, analysis of variance revealed nonsignificant gender differences (p > .05 …

More Hours, More Work: Head Start Expansions Boost Maternal Employment, Chloe R. Gibbs, Esra Kose, Maria Rosales Rueda

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Women’s employment remains highly sensitive to childcare constraints, making childcare availability a critical lever for supporting mothers’ labor force attachment. We study the effects of expanded full-day programming in Head Start, using the 2016 federal funding initiative that targeted grantees with low full-day enrollment. Linking administrative program data, geo-coded center locations, and household data on employment, we estimate a difference-in-differences design by comparing mothers of young children in treated and untreated areas. The policy increased full-day enrollment by 19 percent and raised single mothers’ employment (1.9%), hours (2.5%), and earnings (6.5%). Results show that extending program duration meaningfully improves maternal …

Forensic human identification relies on length-based differences in short tandem repeats (STRs) across autosomal and Y chromosomes, which require separate reactions and provide limited resolution. While next-generation sequencing offers greater discriminatory power, most platforms are expensive and restricted to traditional lab settings. Nanopore sequencing has the potential to change this with the real-time, portable MinION sequencer. However, forensic-specific tools that generate STR profiles compatible with established length-based databases are lacking. To address this, we developed STRspy2.0, which simultaneously profiles autosomal and Y-STRs using nanopore reads. STRspy2.0 produced accurate profiles for 54 multiplexed control libraries and 41 mock casework samples (blood, …

Modeling Spasticity: A Systematic Review, Gaby Gonzalez Chan, Jonathan Marsden, Alexander Besinis, Pablo Borja, Hilary Gunn Feb 2026

Modeling Spasticity: A Systematic Review, Gaby Gonzalez Chan, Jonathan Marsden, Alexander Besinis, Pablo Borja, Hilary Gunn

School of Health Professions

Spasticity, a type of hypertonia characterized by a velocity-dependent increase in muscle tone, is associated with damage to the brain and/or spinal cord in different neurological conditions. However, secondary non-neurological factors, such as soft tissue changes, can complicate the assessment and differentiation of the underlying causes. Accurate assessment is crucial for effective treatment planning, with clinicians relying on passive movement to grade the ‘feel’ of the spastic limb. This review aims to identify and evaluate the feasibility of spasticity models or simulations for clinical teaching. Models based on human spastic limbs were examined, with no restrictions on specific conditions or …

We present the case of a 65-year-old man with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) who developed therapy-related myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) following chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy with idecabtagene vicleucel (ide-cel). The patient, initially diagnosed in 2019, underwent multiple lines of therapy, including high-dose melphalan with autologous stem cell transplantation, before receiving ide-cel for progressive disease. Despite initial remission, a day 100 bone marrow biopsy revealed MDS with a 7q deletion, a cytogenetic abnormality not present on prior marrow evaluations. While CAR-T therapy has revolutionized RRMM treatment, long-term complications such as therapy-related hematologic malignancy remain under-recognized.

The temporal relationship between CAR-T …

Dismantling Racism In The Classroom: Recommendations For White Male Counselor Educators, Jason L. Vannest, Rebecca J. Vannest, Lorise D. Grey

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

In response to the historical tradition of Eurocentrism and Whiteness in counseling programs in the United States, the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) have challenged their members to confront implicit bias, become allies with Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), and commit to challenging racism and implicit bias. Despite these robust calls to disrupt racism and implicit bias, counselor educators - specifically White male counselor educators (WMCEs) - may wonder how to effectively take action due to their own racial identity. Several factors may contribute to WMCEs' reticence to deconstruct racism and …
