Ethical Decision-Making And Modification Of Service Delivery: Social Workers In Connecticut During Covid, Marie Elana Hollingsworth
Ethical Decision-Making And Modification Of Service Delivery: Social Workers In Connecticut During Covid, Marie Elana Hollingsworth
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Social work professionals often experience demanding and intense situations while facing organizational restructuring during crisis situations. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore the viewpoints of frontline social workers regarding their ethical decision-making processes in response to the mandatory modifications of the service delivery protocol during the COVID-19 pandemic. Enck’s biomedical and ethical decision-making framework grounded the study. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with 10 frontline social workers in Connecticut who had been employed with a social service agency for at least 3 years, but no more than ten. Findings from coding and thematic analysis yielded …

Colorism And The Black Family: Effects Of Colorist Messages Among Black Women, Carolyn Frink
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The problem examined in this study is how colorism affects Black families. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the lived experiences of Black women and the colorist messages they received from family members, how those messages were internalized, and the messages perceived effects. The conceptual framework for this study was based on the colorist-historical trauma framework, and data were obtained through individual interviews with Black women ages 22–70, from various socioeconomic backgrounds and selected through purposeful sampling. A multiple case study approach was used to examine similarities and differences among the participants. A thematic analysis was …
An Exploration Of The Site Supervision During Internship Experience For Clinical Mental Health Counseling Students, William Thomas Zaffiro
An Exploration Of The Site Supervision During Internship Experience For Clinical Mental Health Counseling Students, William Thomas Zaffiro
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The purpose of this interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) study was to understand how CMHC students experience and create meaning of site supervision during internship under the new CACREP (2024) Standards. The bulk of the literature on this topic comes from allied social sciences and little research is available in the clinical mental health discipline. As such, there is a need to better understand this experience from the perspective of CMHC students. The study was grounded in interpretive phenomenology and used the rigorous IPA process to explore students’ lived experiences of supervision. I conducted a study using semi-structured interviews with eight …
Collateral Damage: Parental Incarceration As Family Punishment, Hatim M. Husainy
Collateral Damage: Parental Incarceration As Family Punishment, Hatim M. Husainy
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
The United States stands alone among UN members in refusing to ratify the Convention on the Rights of the Child. That absence reflects a deeper failure: the American legal system continues to allow parental incarceration to inflict punishment on children who have committed no crime. This paper explores how the structure of U.S. mass incarceration—especially within Black and Native American communities—conflicts with both domestic legal ideals and international human rights standards. It calls for legal and policy reform that recognizes families as indivisible social units and restores justice to those most affected by incarceration’s collateral damage.

Moving For Minutes! A Sustainable Self-Care Strategy In An Academic Workplace, Jan Michaelis, Ellen D'Errico
Moving For Minutes! A Sustainable Self-Care Strategy In An Academic Workplace, Jan Michaelis, Ellen D'Errico
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
The “6+1” standards of a healthy work environment in an academic setting, are described by Saunders et al. (2021) and include skilled communication, true collaboration, effective decision-making, appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, authentic leadership, and self-care (the “plus one” standard). However, achieving work-life balance for faculty and staff at the school of nursing, who work long hours, can be challenging, often leading to the neglect of regular exercise, a crucial element of personal health and wellness. To address this issue, a staff member initiated the “Moving for Minutes" program (M4M) in 2009, aimed at encouraging weekly physical activities such as walking, …

The U.S. Critical Minerals List: Between A Rock And A Hard Place, Wesley Peebles
The U.S. Critical Minerals List: Between A Rock And A Hard Place, Wesley Peebles
Fordham Environmental Law Review
Critical minerals are minerals found essential to economic and national security and vulnerable to supply chain disruptions. Congress and presidents from both political parties have actively promoted critical mineral production, offering up billions of dollars to secure mineral supply chains. The federal government has invested to increase domestic mineral production, grow global partnerships, and reinvigorate U.S. industry in an attempt to reduce the risk of supply disruptions for these valuable minerals. To identify which minerals are critical to the United States, Congress tasked the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), to evaluate and identify a …
“The Needs Of The Many Outweigh The Needs Of The Few”: A Plan For A New Farm Bill That Promotes The Health And Welfare Of Humans And Nonhuman Animals, And Protects The Planet On Which We Live., John Lieberman
Fordham Environmental Law Review
The Farm Bill was created in 1933, with the passage of the Agricultural Adjustment Act. The Bill was part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, designed to assist farmers struggling with low prices during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl era. Thus the era of the farm subsidy was born. Crafted in a different time, with technology, knowledge, science and an economy that today would be considered obsolete, the basic mechanisms, and financial support, have nevertheless lived on.
The myriad of problems that have arisen since that time within an agriculture industry that has flourished on the taxpayer dime …

Annual Research Symposium
This poster presents a rare case of chondroid syringoma with ossification, representing only the ninth reported instance of bone formation within this adnexal tumor. The report describes a slowly enlarging facial nodule in a 34-year-old male, detailing clinical presentation, surgical excision, and histopathologic findings. Microscopy revealed characteristic epithelial cords and tubules within a myxoid stroma, along with mature lamellar bone formation, confirming the diagnosis. The case expands the known morphologic spectrum of chondroid syringomas and highlights the importance of considering this entity in the differential diagnosis of benign facial masses, particularly when unusual features such as ossification are present.
Health Literacy And A1c: Evaluating Glycemic Control In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Margaret Hickey
Health Literacy And A1c: Evaluating Glycemic Control In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Margaret Hickey
ETD Collection
More than 38 million Americans have diabetes, a chronic illness requiring daily self-management. This challenge is further complicated when patients lack health literacy skills, yet 36% of U.S. adults function at or below basic health literacy. Low health literacy and diabetes contribute to poor health outcomes, disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. This quasi-experimental, descriptive, correlational study examined the impact of health literacy on A1C awareness, glycemic control, and diabetes knowledge in adults with type 2 diabetes, and evaluated a teaching intervention that used visual aids teach-back. Participants with type 2 diabetes (ages 18+, A1C > 7%) were recruited from an outpatient endocrinology …

Staff Education Project Staff Education On Medication Adherence, Blessing Nwoke
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Medication adherence is a critical component of effective psychiatric treatment, yet staff understanding and consistent reinforcement of adherence strategies are often limited in outpatient behavioral health settings. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project implemented a staff education initiative to improve knowledge and awareness of medication adherence using the ESPACOMP Medication Adherence Reporting Guideline (EMERGE) as the foundational framework. The program was conducted in an outpatient psychiatric facility and aimed to align staff knowledge with evidence-based standards for monitoring and supporting adherence. Educational sessions were delivered to clinical staff, incorporating key components of EMERGE to clarify terminology, enhance consistency in …

Transition Beyond The Transaction, Finding Clarity Through Learning: An Autoethnographic Study Of My Search For Purpose And Meaning As A Graduate Student Veteran, Guy Delahoussaye
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The issue at hand for this study is the lack of specifically designed support for graduate student veterans as they transition from military service in search of a job in the civilian workforce. A recent Department of Veteran Affairs study stated that in 2018, nearly 700,000 veterans used veteran educational benefits, with 52% of this group in undergraduate programs and 9% in graduate programs. Both undergraduate and graduate student veterans seek career opportunities, personal growth, improvement of economic status, and professional advancement, but how these groups approach achieving their goals is not the same. When support was available, there was …

Organizational Approach To Collecting, Monitoring, Analyzing Workplace Violence Data And Providing Support To Staff Affected, Brandi C. Bosley, Amanda L. Schweng, Shanan K. Sims
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Significance – Healthcare workers are five times more likely to experience workplace violence than other industries, and 73% all non-fatal workplace violence injuries resulting in missed days of work occur in healthcare settings (OSHA, 2021). WPV costs facilities an estimated $428.5 million nationwide (Van Des Bos et al., 2017). WPV is attributed to burnout, decreased employee morale, increased absenteeism, and increased staff turnover, negatively impacting patient care (Somani et al., 2021).
Background: The organization is a Level 1 Trauma hospital with 573 beds. The Workplace Violence Committee formed in 2018 in response to growing workplace violence incidents. The committee adopted …

Educator Retention And Director Practices In Early Childhood Education Settings, Katherine Williams
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Early childhood education (ECE) educators leave their profession at a rate 14% higher than K-12 educators, resulting in multisystemic issues that affect children, families, staff, and the ECE industry. Research has shown a connection between leadership practices and ECE educator turnover intentions; however, there is limited research on the relationship between the servant-leadership (SL) practices of ECE directors and ECE educators’ turnover intentions. Grounded in Greenleaf’s theory of servant-leadership, the purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the relationship between ECE director SL practices and its seven dimensions, measured using the SL scale, and ECE educator turnover intentions, measured …

Hospitals and healthcare facilities in the United States continue to face persistent shortages of ancillary imaging technologists, creating significant challenges for hospital administrators. The purpose of this integrative review was to identify effective strategies for recruiting and retaining imaging staff in hospitals. The review question concerned what best practices and strategies healthcare administrators can use to improve the recruitment and retention of ancillary imaging staff. The theoretical frameworks for this research, strategic human resource development and Maslow’s theory of human motivation, provided a lens for understanding organizational enhancement and employee engagement, respectively. Following the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, …
Review Of Treating Callous-Unemotional Traits In Children, Jalyn Dubois
Review Of Treating Callous-Unemotional Traits In Children, Jalyn Dubois
Undergraduate Research (Journal)
Psychopathy is a complex disorder characterized by callousness, empathy deficits, and a lack of guilt. While psychopathy cannot be diagnosed until adulthood, these callous-unemotional (CU) traits emerge during early childhood. Interventions aimed at reducing these traits at an early age are generally more effective than treating adults. Literature regarding these child interventions is muddled, inconsistent, and highly limited by methodological challenges. This review synthesizes this conflicting body of research in an attempt to determine best practices. Traditional parent management training (PMT) evidenced mixed results, improving when modified to emphasize the use of positive reinforcement and parental warmth. Treatment gains were …
Relationship Between Transportation Availability And Obstetric Access In Predicting United States Maternal Death Rates, Veronica N. Trueblood
Relationship Between Transportation Availability And Obstetric Access In Predicting United States Maternal Death Rates, Veronica N. Trueblood
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Maternal mortality remains a significant challenge in the United States with substantial variation across counties reflecting differences in health care delivery systems and access to obstetric services. Fragmented obstetric care networks, hospital closures, and geographic barriers to care contribute to delays in prenatal and emergency obstetric services, increasing the risk of preventable maternal deaths. Guided by the social determinants of health (SDOH) framework, this quantitative cross-sectional health services study examined relationships between transportation availability, obstetric care access, and county-level maternal mortality in the United States. A national scope was required to achieve an adequate analytic sample size, as maternal mortality …

This study evaluates the fiscal and academic consequences of New York City’s hold harmless policy during COVID-19, which aimed to stabilize school expenditures amid unexpected enrollment declines by restoring schools’ funding up to initial levels. We examine how school racial composition predicts whether or when schools receive hold harmless “treatment” and assess the impact of hold harmless on financial resources, staffing, and student outcomes, exploring heterogeneity by timing of policy announcement. Although schools with higher White student shares were no more likely than those with higher Hispanic or Black shares to receive hold harmless funds, schools with higher Black shares …

The Bangkok Rules and The Basic Principles for The Treatment of Prisoners are a specific outline of protections and rights for individuals( Bangkok specifically about women) within prisons adopted by the United Nations compromising states. While The United States is a leader in the United Nations and adopted this set of rules, their failures of commitment are extremely apparent. Every year, thousands of prison rapes occur behind bars in New York alone by the very guards meant to protect them. In Finland, another United Nations member, however, has virtually no record of sexual abuse within their prisons. In investigation of …
