Prediction Of Human Transcriptional Biomarkers For Severe Infection With Sars-Cov-2, Jeffrey Clancy, Brett Pickett
Annual Research Symposium
Defining the human host factors associated with severe vs mild COVID-19 cases in infected individuals has become of increasing interest. Mining large numbers of public gene expression datasets is an effective way to identify genes that contribute to a given phenotype. Combining RNA-sequencing data with the associated clinical metadata describing disease severity can enable earlier identification of those patients who are at higher risk of developing severe COVID-19 disease. We consequently identified 356 public RNA-seq human transcriptome samples from the Gene Expression Omnibus database that had disease severity metadata. We then subjected these samples to a robust RNA-seq data processing …

Peripheral MStim provided protection against chronic EtOH withdrawal symptoms and dependence-induced insensitivity of ventral tegmental area (VTA) GABA neurons to ethanol reintroduction. Behavioral indices of withdrawal were substantively ameliorated with concurrent MStim treatment. These findings suggest the need to explore the specific role of mechanoreceptor-based therapies in the treatment of substance abuse.

HIPAA Infringements Correlate Linearly with Number of Social Media Users.
Social media use has made information sharing much easier – including protected health information. Interestingly, as social media has become more popular over the years, HIPAA violations have also become more common.
The calculated R and P values suggest a strong correlation exists between social media use and HIPAA complaints.

Potential Cost Savings With Implementation Of Systemwide Rasburicase Protocol, Parker Gundersen, Adalyn Lee
Potential Cost Savings With Implementation Of Systemwide Rasburicase Protocol, Parker Gundersen, Adalyn Lee
Annual Research Symposium
Purpose: Tumor Lysis Syndrome is a condition that takes place when apoptosis in cancer cells occurs within a short time period. This condition can lead to organ dysfunction and even death. Rasburicase is used to treat high uric acid levels in patients that are experiencing tumor lysis syndrome and is expensive. Dosing and frequency of rasburicase varies across health care institutions. This project evaluated if adherence to a systemwide rasburicase protocol could help reduce drug waste and reduce costs across a healthcare system.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective data analysis reviewing rasburicase doses administered across Intermountain Healthcare over the course …

The Professional Profile Of A Leisure Time Animator In Tourism And Recreation Services, Magdalena Rokicka-Hebel, Julia Ziolkowska, Aleksandra Patyna
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Leisure time animation services are a common feature of packages provided by tour operators and hotels. In Poland this type of service is still treated as novelty. The purpose of this study is to identify the important elements of the professional profile of a leisure time animator in order to support the introduction of these services in Poland. Material/Methods: Research based on a diagnostic survey method was used. 100 tourists and 100 animators participated in the survey. Two separate on-line questionnaires were prepared for each group of respondents. Results: The results of the survey show that the expectations of …

Diversified Health-Related Nordic Walking Training Programs And Physical Fitness Of Elderly Women, Monika Wiech, Krzysztof Prusik, Zbigniew Ossowski, Katarzyna Prusik, Jakub Kortas, Hanna Slomska, Lukasz Bielawa
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Aging of societies results in the growing number of disabled individuals, although the development of medicine and increasing awareness induce such changes as the modification of eating habits and lifestyle, which help to preserved independence for a longer period of time. Due to this, proposals of effective training programs to maintain physical fitness at a level enabling the efficient functioning in everyday life are sought. Material/Methods: The study group consisted of 60 women aged 60–74 years, participating in 6-month Nordic walking training. The respondents were divided into two groups: GE1, realizing endurance training with strengthening and flexibility exercises and …

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: The aim of the study was to determine the speed and failures of perception and attention among female students of the University of the Third Age (U3A) and their links with physical fitness and mood. Material/Methods: The study involved 114 women aged between 50 and 88 years old (M = 68.17) participating in U3A lectures at the University of Physical Education in Warsaw. Perception ability was investigated using Ciechanowicz and Stańczak’s Attention and Perception Test. Physical fitness was assessed with the Fullerton Fitness Test and the Romberg manoeuvre to evaluate the ability to maintain balance. The participants were also …

Healthy Aging: Quality Of Life And Health Behaviours In Students Of The University Of The Third Age – A Preliminary Study, Justyna Krzepota, Dorota Sadowska, Beata Florkiewicz
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: Previous studies have revealed high prevalence of students exhibiting unhealthy behaviour, such as insufficient physical activity during their transitional phase from school to university. Research shows that students’ health is worse compared to non-student pears. However, health and its determinants in specific subgroups, such as students –future teachers, have remained largely unexplored. In contemporary society, teachers are expected to fulfil the role of health educators regardless of the subject they teach in school. So they may maintain good health potential and develop healthy lifestyle themselves. The present study aims to estimate the health status of first-year students at the …

Influence Of Sport Activity On Satisfaction With Life And Sense Of Coherence Among Physically Disabled People, Artur Ziolkowski, Igor Zubrzycki, Aleksandra Blachnio, Pawel Drobnik, Barbara Zatanska, Waldemar Moska
Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity
Background: The study discusses the differences in the levels of satisfaction with life (SWL) and a sense of coherence (SOC) in disabled sedentary people, disabled persons performing leisure sports and competitive disabled athletes. Material/Methods: The data were analyzed using analysis of covariance, Pearson-correlation and a linear regression. Results: The results indicate that sport elicits an insignificant increase in SWL and SOC. SOC correlates with SWL in sedentary disabled and competitive disabled athletes. In disabled persons performing leisure sports, the level of physical activity must be tuned in order to elicit a congruent increase in SWL and SOC. Conclusions: Continued research …
