Barriers And Facilitators To The Completion Of Advance Directives In Healthy, Non-Healthcare Employed Adults Aged 45-65, Michael Lawrence Dion
Barriers And Facilitators To The Completion Of Advance Directives In Healthy, Non-Healthcare Employed Adults Aged 45-65, Michael Lawrence Dion
Theses
The Patient Self-Determination Act passed in 1991 requires staff in health care facilities, such as skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, home health services and primary care offices to ask patients about advanced directives. Despite this, actual completions of advance directives in America remain low. To determine the barriers and facilitators to the completion of advance directives in healthy, non-health care employed individuals aged 45-65. It is believed healthy individuals in this age group both desire the advance directive, and have strong opinions regarding their end of life preferences.

Level Of Comfort In Evaluating Older Patients Amongst Medical Students And Emergency Medicine Residents, Lily L. Berrin, Phraewa Thatphet, Anita N. Chary, Surriya C. Ahmad, Don Melady, Shan W. Liu
Journal of Geriatric Emergency Medicine
Introduction
As the population ages, emergency physicians must be better equipped to manage the complex needs of older patients. While geriatric core competencies have been developed for medical students and emergency medicine (EM) residents, little work has been done to evaluate EM trainees’ comfort with these competencies, or their interest in and barriers to learning more about Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM).
Methods
We conducted a cross-sectional study of EM residents and medical students in their clinical years of training with interest in EM. We used an online self-administered survey to evaluate trainees’ self-reported comfort with previously reported geriatric competency domains, …

Biomechanical Evaluation Over Level Ground Walking Of User-Specific Prosthetic Feet Designed Using The Lower Leg Trajectory Error Framework, Victor Prost, W. Brett Johnson, Jenny A. Kent, Matthew J. Major, Amos G. Winter V.
Physical Therapy Faculty Research
The walking pattern and comfort of a person with lower limb amputation are determined by the prosthetic foot’s diverse set of mechanical characteristics. However, most design methodologies are iterative and focus on individual parameters, preventing a holistic design of prosthetic feet for a user’s body size and walking preferences. Here we refined and evaluated the lower leg trajectory error (LLTE) framework, a novel quantitative and predictive design methodology that optimizes the mechanical function of a user’s prosthesis to encourage gait dynamics that match their body size and desired walking pattern. Five people with unilateral below-knee amputation walked over-ground at self-selected …
Reducing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections: Beyond The Bundle, Deana Cirillo
Reducing Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections: Beyond The Bundle, Deana Cirillo
Student Scholarly Projects
Practice Problem: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are preventable but are still the most common healthcare-associated infection (HAI) worldwide, encumbering the health of patients and escalating financial burden on society (CDC, 2021; Shadle, 2021).
PICOT: In adult patients with spinal cord injury, does direct observation of urinary catheter insertion, compared to the standard of care, reduce the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infections, within ten weeks of implementation?
Evidence: Multiple factors contribute to Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs), but hand hygiene is the most important prevention measure to decrease contact transmission (Gould et al., 2017). The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) clinical …

Functions Of Adp-Ribose Transferases In The Maintenance Of Telomere Integrity, Daniela Muoio, Natalie Laspata, Elise Fouquerel
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
The ADP-ribose transferase (ART) family comprises 17 enzymes that catalyze mono- or poly-ADP-ribosylation, a post-translational modification of proteins. Present in all subcellular compartments, ARTs are implicated in a growing number of biological processes including DNA repair, replication, transcription regulation, intra- and extra-cellular signaling, viral infection and cell death. Five members of the family, PARP1, PARP2, PARP3, tankyrase 1 and tankyrase 2 are mainly described for their crucial functions in the maintenance of genome stability. It is well established that the most describedrole of PARP1, 2 and 3 is the repair of DNA lesions while tankyrases 1 and 2 are crucial …

Extending Psychological Reactance Theory To Include Denial Of Threat And Media Sharing Intentions As Freedom Restoration Behavior, Noel H. Mcguire, Hannah Ball
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
This study extends psychological reactance theory by examining denial of a public health threat and resistance toward media sharing as two novel types of freedom restoration. Participants (N = 220) were randomly assigned to watch a video advocating COVID-19 guidelines and completed an online survey assessing corresponding perceptions and behavioral intentions. Results of structural equation modeling supported the two-step model of reactance: greater perceived freedom threat was related to greater reactance, which in turn was linked to lower intentions to comply with COVID-19 guidelines, lower intentions to share the video with one’s online social network, and greater denial of COVID-19 …

Despite the success of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy for cancer, resistance and relapse are frequent. Combination therapies are expected to enhance response rates and overcome this resistance. Herein, we report that combining PRMT7 inhibition with ICI therapy induces a strong anti-tumor T cell immunity and restrains tumor growth in vivo by increasing immune cell infiltration. PRMT7-deficient B16.F10 melanoma exhibits increased expression of genes in the interferon pathway, antigen presentation, and chemokine signaling. PRMT7 deficiency or inhibition with SGC3027 in B16.F10 melanoma results in reduced DNMT expression, loss of DNA methylation in the regulatory regions of endogenous retroviral elements (ERVs) …

A critical mediator of evolution is natural selection, which operates by the divergent reproductive success of individuals and results in conformity of an organism with its environment. Reproductive function has evolved to support germline transmission. In mammalian ovaries, this requires healthy, active gonad function, and follicle development. However, healthy follicles do not contribute to germline transmission in a dead animal. Therefore, support of the health and survival of the organism, in addition to fertility, must be considered as an integral part of reproductive function. Reproductive and chronological aging both impose a burden on health and increase disease rates. Tremors are …

Judicial Impartiality In The Judicial Council Act 2019: Challenges And Opportunities, Brian M. Barry Dr
Articles
The Judicial Council is tasked with promoting and maintaining high standards of judicial conduct. The Judicial Council Act 2019 identifies judicial impartiality as a principle of judicial conduct that Irish judges are required to uphold and exemplify. Despite its ubiquity, judicial impartiality is perhaps under-explained and under-examined.
This article considers the nature and scope of judicial impartiality in contemporary Irish judging. It argues that the Judicial Council ought to take a proactive, multi-faceted approach to promote and maintain judicial impartiality, to address contemporary challenges that the Irish judiciary face including increasingly sophisticated empirical research into judicial performance, the proliferation of …

Development Of Enhanced Algae Strains And Sustainable Cultivation Processes For Production Of Algal Lipids For Biofuels And Bioproducts, Enlin Lo
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The establishment of an algae industry is crucial for addressing global biofuel and bioproduct demand that meets the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) worldwide. Photosynthetic microalgae are excellent sources for food, fiber, fuel, feed, and fertilizer, which are the 5Fs of the SDG. However, at present, algae-based materials are not cost-competitive or sufficiently sustainable. Improved productivity, lower cultivation cost, and reduced use of resources are required to transition from lab to industry, necessitating the development of superior strains that have high productivity and can tolerate environmental stress, such as temperature and salinity, so they can be cultivated at large scale outdoors …
Defining The Role Of Oxidized Mitochondrial Dna In Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Grace Anne Ward
Defining The Role Of Oxidized Mitochondrial Dna In Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Grace Anne Ward
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) are heterogeneous bone marrow (BM) failure malignancies characterized by constitutive innate immune activation, NLRP3 inflammasome (IFM) driven pyroptotic cell death, and the induction of interferon-stimulated genes (ISG). MDS often diagnostically resembles other hematologic disorders, as such, additional tools are needed for the discrimination from overlapping disorders. We observed that oxidized mitochondrial DNA (ox-mtDNA) is released upon cytolysis. We hypothesize that levels of ox-mtDNA are high in MDS, allowing us to use it as a diagnostic biomarker; and that cell free ox-mtDNA is contributing to feedforward BM failure.
ROC/AUC analysis demonstrated that ox-mtDNA is a sensitive and specific …

Individual Differences In Response To Hostile And Benevolent Sexism In A Stem Interview Context: The Moderating Role Of Behavioral Activation, Elizabeth Kiebel
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Women continue to face sexism in workplace contexts, especially those that are male dominated, such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Yet, women often fail to confront the sexism they experience, despite confrontation being an effective way to cope with and prevent future harassment (Fitzgerald et al., 1995; Magley, 2002). To date, no one has assessed the potential moderating role of personality differences related to approach motivation on women’s confrontation of sexism. In this study, women were exposed to either a hostilely sexist or benevolently sexist question during a mock job interview that was purportedly being conducted as part …

Small Heat Shock Protein 22 Preserves Neuronal Function In A Murine Model Of Tauopathy, Santiago Rodriguez Ospina
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Proteinopathies is a family of diseases associated with the pathological aggregation of protein. There are a multitude of proteinopathies, like tauopathy and synucleinopathy that contribute to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Creutzfeldt-Jakob, Pick’s disease, Frontotemporal dementia, and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Currently, one focus of research in the field is mitigating aggregation-prone proteins contributing to disease state. One method of targeting aggregation is the use of chaperones. Chaperones are molecular machinery that help maintain homeostasis in the cells, through various roles and mechanisms, one of those methods is to regulate protein aggregation. Chaperones can achieve this by affecting protein-protein interactions, …
