Salinity is one of the major abiotic stress factors that threaten crop development and sustainable food production. As a mitigation strategy, several plant growth regulators and osmoprotectants have been applied to ameliorate the negative effects of salinity stress in plants. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate the effect of foliar applications of different concentrations of salicylic acid and proline on the growth, yield, fruit quality, and nutritional composition of cucumber crops grown under saline conditions. The three main irrigation salinity variations included electrical conductivity (EC) of 0.5 dS/m (control), EC 6.0 dS/m, and EC 12.0 dS/m. Foliar spray treatments …

Agenda For Temple Management And Buddhism-Related Businesses: Focusing On Monk Temp Services And Large Ossuaries, Hisato Nakamura
Agenda For Temple Management And Buddhism-Related Businesses: Focusing On Monk Temp Services And Large Ossuaries, Hisato Nakamura
Japanese Society and Culture
In a previous article, the author examined the revitalization of Japanese temples, which are in a critical economic condition, from the perspective of management strategy. With the exception of prominent nationwide temples and tourist temples in metropolitan areas, temples are in a state of decline owing to a weakening Buddhist culture in metropolitan areas and low population density, among other causes. This paper, too, examines the rise of Buddhism-related businesses, focusing on the now-common tombstone dealers and funeral parlours. Then, the status quo of monk temp services, which have a close relationship with funeral parlours and its brokers, is considered, …
The “Community-Based Integrated Care System” And Discourse Ethics – From The Viewpoint Of Autonomy And Solidarity –, Koichi Asakura
The “Community-Based Integrated Care System” And Discourse Ethics – From The Viewpoint Of Autonomy And Solidarity –, Koichi Asakura
Japanese Society and Culture
Since the establishment of the Long-term Care Insurance System in 2000, the promotion of the Community-based Integrated Care System has been promoted. The policy of the Long-term Care Insurance System sets in-home care services before reducing the economic burden in this country. However, this idea is not used in the latest report. The policy that individuals requiring care and terminal stage patients be sent into a large-scale accommodation in a depopulated area and live there until they die, is not adopted because of the belief or philosophy of the foundation of respect for dignity. In this study, I discuss the …

A Virtual Reality: Preserving The Right To Appear "In Person" Before An Administrative Separation Board, Jeffrey Janaro, Christopher Clifton
A Virtual Reality: Preserving The Right To Appear "In Person" Before An Administrative Separation Board, Jeffrey Janaro, Christopher Clifton
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, courts and government agencies utilized
video teleconference (“VTC”) technology to conduct trials and hearings in
limited settings. However, as the pandemic progressed, a number of these
adjudicative bodies began to rely more heavily on VTC, and at least one military
service sanctioned the use of VTC to conduct administrative separation
proceedings. The administrative separation process is routinely used as an
employment action to separate military members from an armed service. Due
to its speed and efficiency, military commanders often elect to use the administrative
separation process over the more rigorous court-martial procedure
to effect good …

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
Inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) is an ancient biopolymer that is well preserved throughout evolution and present in all studied organisms. In mammals, it shows a high co-localization with mitochondria, and it has been demonstrated to be involved in the homeostasis of key processes within the organelle, including mitochondrial bioenergetics. However, the exact extent of the effects of polyP on the regulation of cellular bioenergetics, as well as the mechanisms explaining these effects, still remain poorly understood. Here, using HEK293 mammalian cells under Wild-type (Wt) and MitoPPX (cells enzymatically depleted of mitochondrial polyP) conditions, we show that depletion of polyP within mitochondria …

Remote sighted assistance (RSA) is an emerging navigational aid for people with visual impairments (PVI). Using scenario-based design to illustrate our ideas, we developed a prototype showcasing potential applications for computer vision to support RSA interactions. We reviewed the prototype demonstrating real-world navigation scenarios with an RSA expert, and then iteratively refined the prototype based on feedback. We reviewed the refined prototype with 12 RSA professionals to evaluate the desirability and feasibility of the prototyped computer vision concepts. The RSA expert and professionals were engaged by, and reacted insightfully and constructively to the proposed design ideas. We discuss what we …

Voices Of Indonesian Manufacturing Workers In Rotating Shift Systems, Henny Permatasari, Junaiti Sahar, Muchtarrudin Mansyur, Astrid Widayati Hardjono
Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia
The factors associated with changes in work patterns and working hours due to rotating shifts have an effect on the increased risk of health problems in workers. Manufacturing industry workers, specifically those on rotating shift sched- ules, are at a high risk of various health problems, such as cardiovascular diseases, circadian rhythm problems, social life problems, and stress. These health problems may be worsened by poor lifestyle habits, such as smoking, unhealthy diet, and infrequent physical activity. This research aimed to explore the experience of 12 manufacturing workers on rotating shift schedules in Greater Jakarta, Indonesia. Through a phenomenological approach, …

Sarcoidosis-associated pulmonary hypertension (SAPH) is an important complication of advanced sarcoidosis. Over the past few years, there have been several studies dealing with screening, diagnosis and treatment of SAPH. This includes the results of two large SAPH-specific registries. A task force was established by the World Association of Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatous disease (WASOG) to summarise the current level of knowledge in the area and provide guidance for the management of patients. A group of sarcoidosis and pulmonary hypertension experts participated in this task force. The committee developed a consensus regarding initial screening including who should undergo more specific testing …

Mitochondria-Associated Myosin 19 Processively Transports Mitochondria On Actin Tracks In Living Cells, Osamu Sato, Tsuyoshi Sakai, Young-Yeon Choo, Reiko Ikebe, Tomonobu M. Watanabe, Mitsuo Ikebe
Cellular and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Mitochondria are fundamentally important in cell function, and their malfunction can cause the development of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neuronal disorders. Myosin 19 (Myo19) shows discrete localization with mitochondria and is thought to play an important role in mitochondrial dynamics and function; however, the function of Myo19 in mitochondrial dynamics at the cellular and molecular levels is poorly understood. Critical missing information is whether Myo19 is a processive motor that is suitable for transportation of mitochondria. Here, we show for the first time that single Myo19 molecules processively move on actin filaments and can transport mitochondria in cells. We demonstrate …

Leadership Matters: Supporting The Mental Health Needs Of Black And Latina/O Students In A Post Covid-19 World, Larry Walker, Michelle Sullivan, Nicola Stewart-Walker
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
Communities throughout the United States were devastated by the COVID-19 virus. For instance, the mortality rates are higher within Black and Latina/o communities compared to the overall United States population. The pandemic represents another problem that will contribute to anxiety disorders and depression among Black and Latina/o students. How we combat these issues is important. During the 2020-2021 school year millions of students returned to schools and some struggled to adjust because of the traumatic experiences associated with COVID-19. Students will need the support of administrators, teachers, and mental health practitioners. For this reason, this review of literature examined the …

Promoting Therapist’S Use Of Iadls: Establishing A Pet Care Protocol With Stallworth Inpatient Rehab, Christa Schmieder
OTD Capstone Projects
Inpatient rehabilitation at Stallworth has shown a need for a comprehensive overview of pet care as an IADL along with resources to assist in guiding patients in determining the appropriate steps to ensure their pet is well taken care of. This need was found through surveying the therapy team as well as shadowing therapists and connecting with patients. This project was centered around creating tools such as an IADL kit with instructions for therapists to use with patients, a resource bank containing adaptation recommendations and pet care service apps, a resource explaining how to certify animal as service animal, emotional …
Accessibility Of Mental Health Services Within The American Deaf Community, Hali E. Hartman
Accessibility Of Mental Health Services Within The American Deaf Community, Hali E. Hartman
Student Works
The prolonged state of silence in which members of the American Deaf community dwell daily may be causing them to experience elevated levels of adverse mental health effects (Gryglewicz et al., 2017). To increase the accessibility of mental health services for suffering deaf individuals, anti-discrimination laws have been enacted throughout history (“Americans With Disabilities Act,” 2022; Horton et al., 2012; Schniedewind et al., 2020; Vernon, 2006). Despite such strides, more should be done to improve existing resources. Increasing the number of deaf professionals working in mental healthcare settings and educating hearing providers on the language and culture of the Deaf …

Sparking A Movement: A Coordinated, Bottom-Up Approach To Increase Voluntary Pro Bono Service And Mend The Justice Gap, David W. Lannetti, Jennifer L. Eaton
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
For decades, the legal profession has tried and tried again to increase pro
bono representation and reduce the ill effects of the Justice Gap. A common
and increasing theme has been a top-down approach focused on laudable
platitudes, jurisdictional reporting policies, and aspirational guidelines to
inspire attorneys to voluntarily serve low-income Americans. These efforts
have enjoyed very little success, however, and with the Justice Gap only getting
worse, a new solution is needed. This Article shifts the focus away from
these top-down methods and mandates, which lack accountability and incentives,
to a bottom-up approach that offers a more viable solution …

Unshackled: Stories Of Redemption Among Serious Youth Offenders, Julie E. Mcconnell
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
In a series of decisions concerning child defendants, the United States Supreme
Court has embraced the understanding, based on adolescent brain
development, that the legal system must recognize children are different than
adults concerning criminal culpability and sentencing. That recognition, culminating
in Miller v. Alabama and Montgomery v. Louisiana, led to the opportunity
for thousands of individuals across the country, initially sentenced
to death-in-prison sentences when they were minors, to gain a meaningful
opportunity for release. These cases permanently banned mandatory life sentences
for children. In Virginia, the legislature now allows reconsideration
of these cases through hearings before the parole …

Unionizing In The Chambers Of Government, Louis Cholden-Brown
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
As overall union membership stagnates nationwide due to the contraction
of traditionally unionized industries, labor organizations have made historic
inroads into new, highly volatile employment sectors, including digital media,
tech, political campaigns, and the gig economy. One such sector that
has seen new life is state and local legislative employees. Excluded from coverage
by the National Labor Relations Act, legislative employees have been
subject to disparate labor rights, job protections, and terms and conditions
of employment across and within states. While efforts to secure collective
bargaining rights for this sector have occurred over the past twenty-five
years, the simultaneous yet …
Public Charge Grounds For Inadmissibility: Impact On Noncitizen Health Insurance Coverage, Madeline M. Culbreth
Public Charge Grounds For Inadmissibility: Impact On Noncitizen Health Insurance Coverage, Madeline M. Culbreth
Richmond Public Interest Law Review
The public charge rule is an ongoing barrier to health insurance for lawfully
present immigrants and ought to be removed. Healthcare coverage for
immigrants is a critical aspect of the country’s health care scheme. Recent
changes to the United States’ immigration policy are contributing to growing
fears among immigrant families about participating in Medicaid and CHIP.
The most effective solution is to permanently alter the Immigration and Nationality
Act. Congress should expressly exclude health insurance from being
considered in the public charge grounds for inadmissibility.

In 2021 over the span of a few months, amateurism, the foundation of the
National Collegiate Athletic Association was challenged and redefined. Following
the passage of “name, image, and likeness” laws at the state level
and an unfavorable Supreme Court ruling, the NCAA’s structure has been
forced to evolve. These changes have opened up possibilities for college athletes
to monetize their playing in a model that is not based on viewership or
revenue sharing. Serious equity gaps between men’s and women’s sports
continue to exist, predicated on which sports generate the most money. While
not a holistic solution, name, image …

This article utilizes an intersectional approach to examine the causes and
realities of the dismal state of pregnancy-related healthcare in the United
States, highlighting the disparate impact on Black pregnant people. The
enslavementand brutalization of Black women in the U.S. demonstrates how
American society systematically devalues Black health, especially reproductive
health. The impacts of this horrific history persist today, resulting in the
American healthcare system utterly failing Black mothers and pregnant people
of all gender identities. This article surveys this history and presents policy

Microbial symbionts play a significant role in plant health and stress tolerance. However, few studies exist that address rare species of core-microbiome function during abiotic stress. In the current study, we compared the microbiome composition of succulent dwarf shrub halophyte Zygophyllum qatarensis Hadidi across desert populations. The results showed that rhizospheric and endosphere microbiome greatly varied due to soil texture (sandy and gravel). No specific bacterial amplicon sequence variants were observed in the core-microbiome of bulk soil and rhizosphere, however, bacterial genus Alcaligenes and fungal genus Acidea were abundantly distributed across root and shoot endospheres. We also analyzed major nutrients …
