A Framework To Support The Progressive Implementation Of Integrated Team-Based Care For The Management Of Copd: A Collective Case Study., Shannon L. Sibbald, Vaidehi Misra, Madelyn Dasilva, Christopher Licskai

Health Studies Publications

BACKGROUND: In Canada, there is widespread agreement about the need for integrated models of team-based care. However, there is less agreement on how to support the scale-up and spread of successful models, and there is limited empirical evidence to support this process in chronic disease management. We studied the supporting and mitigating factors required to successfully implement and scale-up an integrated model of team-based care in primary care.

METHODS: We conducted a collective case study using multiple methods of data collection including interviews, document analysis, living documents, and a focus group. Our study explored a team-based model of care for …

Using Personality Traits To Predict Boundary Management Strategies, Corey A. Adams

ETD Archive

This research attempted to answer the question if it possible to predict an individual’s boundary management strategies by using their personality traits. Participants (N = 99) were recruited on the website LinkedIn to answer a survey that included questions about their personality traits, their workplace culture around boundary management, the type of boundary management strategy they preferred to use, and the strategies they used. The traits Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, and Agreeableness were found to be significant personality traits to use when predicting preferred boundary management strategies with a moderately strong relationship to preferring Segmentation boundary management strategies. Contrary to …

Narrowing The Digital Divide: Instructional Practices Promoting Growth Mindset To Address Students’ Digital Literacy Needs In A Secondary School Learning Environment, Alyssa A. Krisanda

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study was: (1) to explore the ways in which high school teachers use instructional practices that promote a growth mindset among their students, (2) how those practices are used to improve digital literacy, and (3) how these practices evolved during the transition from face-to-face instruction to remote instruction. This study aimed to explore not only how teachers are using instructional strategies to promote growth mindset, but how those strategies are helping to address students‘ digital literacy needs with the intent to narrow the digital divide. For this study, the case-selection variant of …

The Role Of G-Protein Coupled Receptor 75 In Pulmonary Hypertension, Catherine D'Addario Mar 2022

The Role Of G-Protein Coupled Receptor 75 In Pulmonary Hypertension, Catherine D'Addario

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) is a cardiopulmonary disease estimated to affect between 20 million to 70 million individuals globally, with poor prognosis and inadequate treatment. Recent studies show the orphan G Protein Coupled Receptor 75 (GPR75) is upregulated in the pulmonary vessels of PH patients, especially in females. Therefore, we hypothesized that Gpr75 knock down (Gpr75-/-) mice will be protected from developing PH. To test our hypothesis, we challenged isolated intra-lobar pulmonary artery (IPA) from wild-type (WT; N=40) and Gpr75-/- (N=19) mice with hypoxia to examine their hypoxic vasoconstrictive (HPV) response, which is a physiological response of …

Entity-Driven Fact-Aware Abstractive Summarization Of Biomedical Literature, Amanuel Alambo, Tanvi Banerjee, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Michael Raymer Mar 2022

Entity-Driven Fact-Aware Abstractive Summarization Of Biomedical Literature, Amanuel Alambo, Tanvi Banerjee, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Michael Raymer

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

As part of the large number of scientific articles being published every year, the publication rate of biomedical literature has been increasing. Consequently, there has been considerable effort to harness and summarize the massive amount of biomedical research articles. While transformer-based encoder-decoder models in a vanilla source document-to-summary setting have been extensively studied for abstractive summarization in different domains, their major limitations continue to be entity hallucination (a phenomenon where generated summaries constitute entities not related to or present in source article(s)) and factual inconsistency. This problem is exacerbated in a biomedical setting where named entities and their semantics (which …

Unhoused And Unhireable? Examining Employment Biases In Service Contexts Related To Perceived Warmth And Competence Of People Experiencing Houselessness, Larry R. Martinez, Nicholas A. Smith, Megan J. Snoeyink, Breffni M. Noone, Alex Shockley Mar 2022

Unhoused And Unhireable? Examining Employment Biases In Service Contexts Related To Perceived Warmth And Competence Of People Experiencing Houselessness, Larry R. Martinez, Nicholas A. Smith, Megan J. Snoeyink, Breffni M. Noone, Alex Shockley

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Lack of safe and stable housing is a pernicious and growing social concern, and stereotypes about individuals experiencing houselessness are generally quite negative. Little scholarly work has examined housing insecurity and its associated stereotypes in employment contexts. The purpose of the current research was to examine, in the context of the hospitality industry, whether housing status influences hiring managers' perceptions of hireability (Study 1) and customers' evaluations of an organization and its employees (Study 2) using the stereotype content model. Across two experimental studies, we assessed participant attitudes toward individuals experiencing houselessness. In Study 1, we instructed 148 hotel managers …

Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review As A Forum Of Fighting For Borderline Recommendations? Lessons Learned From The Ground, Kazuo Fukuda Mar 2022

Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review As A Forum Of Fighting For Borderline Recommendations? Lessons Learned From The Ground, Kazuo Fukuda

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

Highly acclaimed as a key innovation of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) was created in 2006 as a cooperative, peer-review mechanism to shift away from the highly politicized Commission on Human Rights. Despite the significance and hope attached to the UPR, it has been conspicuously under-examined in the U.S. legal scholarship. And most relevant literature elsewhere has avoided directly addressing the fundamental question of exactly what the UPR’s added value is to the global human rights regime in terms of its direct contribution to improving human rights situations on the ground. This is mainly …

Brief Strategy Training In Aging: Near Transfer Effects And Mediation Of Gains By Improved Self‐Regulation, Carla M. Strickland‐Hughes, Robin L. West Mar 2022

Brief Strategy Training In Aging: Near Transfer Effects And Mediation Of Gains By Improved Self‐Regulation, Carla M. Strickland‐Hughes, Robin L. West

Pacific Faculty Work

A common approach to cognitive intervention for adults is memory strategy training, but limited work of this type has examined intervention effects in relation to self‐regulation (e.g., strategy usage, memory beliefs) and few have established near transfer (training‐related performance gain on untrained tasks related to the target task). The present research, Everyday Memory Clinic— Revised (EMC‐R), examined whether relatively brief face‐name association training, offering elements focused on self‐regulation, can improve name recall, enhance memory self‐regulation, and lead to near transfer. Participants were 122 healthy, well‐educated middle‐aged and older adults (51–90 years old) randomly assigned to a strategy training program (SO), …

Osteoarthritis And Cartilage Insult: Elucidation Of Molecular Interplay And Attempted Interventions, Brandon James Rose Mar 2022

Osteoarthritis And Cartilage Insult: Elucidation Of Molecular Interplay And Attempted Interventions, Brandon James Rose

Theses and Dissertations

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common and incapacitating joint disease beginning with breakdown of articular cartilage and extending into subchondral bone. At present, the processes through which the disease occurs are poorly understood, and interventions are limited to pain relief and eventual joint replacement. OA is commonly associated with obesity and corresponding pathologies, and as OA is demonstrably not a product of passive erosion of cartilage over time or under increased loads there must needs be some other mechanistic link between the two conditions. We hypothesize that the production of ceramides, a hallmark of the insulin resistance syndrome underlying many obesity-related …

Bipse: A Biomarker-Based Phase I/Ii Design For Immunotherapy Trials With Progression-Free Survival Endpoint, Beibei Guo, Yong Zang

Faculty Publications

A Bayesian biomarker-based phase I/II design (BIPSE) is presented for immunotherapy trials with a progression-free survival (PFS) endpoint. The objective is to identify the subgroup-specific optimal dose, defined as the dose with the best risk-benefit tradeoff in each biomarker subgroup. We jointly model the immune response, toxicity outcome, and PFS with information borrowing across subgroups. A plateau model is used to describe the marginal distribution of the immune response. Conditional on the immune response, we model toxicity using probit regression and model PFS using the mixture cure rate model. During the trial, based on the accumulating data, we continuously update …

The Healthcare Legacy Of The Mission Civilisatrice In Unincorporated U.S. Territories, Sam F. Halabi Mar 2022

The Healthcare Legacy Of The Mission Civilisatrice In Unincorporated U.S. Territories, Sam F. Halabi

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

Individual and population health in unincorporated U.S. territories – American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands – lag terribly behind those in the 50 U.S. states and D.C. The populations in the territories – with drastically higher rates of poverty – suffer and die from chronic conditions like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease at far higher rates; must find facilities and doctors thousands of miles away for even moderately complex cases; and perpetually struggle to make access to basic services available. While scholars have long pointed to the disparate treatment of these populations …

Research Nurses' Attitudes And Practices Regarding Communication Of Risks And Benefits During The Research Informed Consent Process, Lidia Lika Nusbaum Mar 2022

Research Nurses' Attitudes And Practices Regarding Communication Of Risks And Benefits During The Research Informed Consent Process, Lidia Lika Nusbaum

Dissertations

Many studies show that research participants frequently do not fully comprehend information regarding risks and benefits (R&B) associated with clinical trials even though this is a fundamental component of the research informed consent (IC) process, required by ethical and regulatory guidelines. Research nurses often take an active role in obtaining IC while explaining study details and verifying potential participants' understanding. Although there are published recommended strategies to enhance the IC communication process, particularly for R&B communication, there is a paucity of research focused on research nurses' perspectives about the process. This study addresses this gap in the literature and provides …

Using An Appreciative Inquiry Summit To Improve Support For First Year Experience Community College Instructors, Elise G. Zornow

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This evaluation study had three main aims: 1) to examine how an Appreciative Inquiry (AI) Summit can be used to promote First Year Experience (FYE) instructors’ sense of autonomy, competence, and relatedness within the context of the FYE program at a community college; 2) to examine how an AI Summit might guide FYE program development; and 3) to examine how and in what ways an AI Summit might influence FYE instructors’ intent to act on the recommendations that result from this approach to program development. Instructors teaching the FYE course at a community college in the Southeastern United States were …
