Who's Got Your Six: A Formative Evaluation Of A Military-Connected Student Cultural Competency Workshop, Wayne N. Taylor
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The University of South Florida (USF) ranks as one of the top 50 public universities in the nation. As of Spring 2022, 14% of the student population identify as military-connected students (MCS). MCS comprises Active Duty, National Guard, Reserve, veteran or military dependents. Many student veterans choose not to embrace their veteran identity due to feeling unaccepted or viewed from a deficit mindset by faculty, staff, and other students. Veteran studies research identifies the significant influence faculty and staff possess when addressing MCS retention and graduation rates (Lim et al., 2018; Vacchi, 2012; Vacchi, 2018). USF’s Office of Veteran Success …

Informal Communication, Sensemaking, And Relational Precarity: Constituting Resilience In Remote Work During Covid, Tanya R.M. Vomacka
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The COVID-19 global pandemic disrupted every corner of the globe, impacting our personal and professional lives with intensity and scope that have yet to be fully comprehended. One such disruption has been to the workplace and organizational culture as businesses, non-governmental agencies, governments, and other organizations worldwide rapidly moved face-to-face operations to remote work. Two years into the pandemic, with vaccines available and the immediate health threat for most healthy individuals waning, businesses still find themselves confronting a changing paradigm as remote work becomes more of a permanent and competitive fixture.
This study explores the impact of remote work on …
High-Risk Traffic Crash Pattern Recognition And Identification Using Econometric Models And Machine Learning Models, Runan Yang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Roadway crashes have become a major cause of human deaths and injuries and caused much economic damage. According to World Health Organization (WHO), about 1.35 million people died in traffic crashes and over 50 million people injured from traffic crashes in the year of 2016 (World Health Organization, 2020). Nationally, in the U.S., the latest decade witnessed an increase of over 10% in traffic fatalities (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 2019). Similarly, in state of Florida, the fatal crashes increased by 4.62% from 2019 to 2020 (Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, 2021). To prevent injuries and …
Origin And Epigenetic Regulation Of Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma, Carly M. Harro
Origin And Epigenetic Regulation Of Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma, Carly M. Harro
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The pathogenesis of Cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL) remains unclear. Using conditional knockout mice, we found that ablation of the genomic organizer Special AT-rich sequence-binding protein-1 (Satb1) caused malignant transformation of mature, skin-homing, Notch-activated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells into progressively fatal lymphoma. Mechanistically, Satb1 restrained Stat5 phosphorylation and the expression of skin-homing chemokine receptors in mature T cells. H3K27 and H3K9 trimethylation occluded the SATB1 promoter in Sézary cells, while inhibition of SUV39H1/2 methyltransferases (unlike EZH2 inhibition), restored protective SATB1 expression and selectively abrogated the growth of primary Sézary cells more effectively than romidepsin. Additionally, using single-cell RNA/TCR sequencing …
Thermochemical Conversion Of Lipid-Extracted Algal Biomass To Value-Added Sustainable Products, Magdalini Tsarpali
Thermochemical Conversion Of Lipid-Extracted Algal Biomass To Value-Added Sustainable Products, Magdalini Tsarpali
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The extensive use of fossil fuels has increased the CO2 emissions, a phenomenon that has increased the demand for renewable energy and resources. Algae, photosynthetic aquatic organisms, have recently caught attention due to their high growth rate and the high CO2 capture ability. Biofuels and bioproducts from algae are considered promising alternatives because of their lower carbon footprint. Lipids are by far the most popular algal product, as they find applications in both fuels, such as biodiesel, and products, such as nutraceuticals and cosmetics. However, after lipid extraction, conversion of the residual algal biomass to value-added products is viewed as …

Safe From “Harm”: The Governance Of Violence By Platforms, Julia R. Decook, Kelley Cotter, Shaheen Kanthawala, Kali Foyle
School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works
A number of issues have emerged related to how platforms moderate and mitigate “harm.” Although platforms have recently developed more explicit policies in regard to what constitutes “hate speech” and “harmful content,” it appears that platforms often use subjective judgments of harm that specifically pertains to spectacular, physical violence—but harm takes on many shapes and complex forms. The politics of defining “harm” and “violence” within these platforms are complex and dynamic, and represent entrenched histories of how control over these definitions extends to people's perceptions of them. Via a critical discourse analysis of policy documents from three major platforms (Facebook, …

Billbugs In Turfgrass (Sphenophorus Spp.), Desiree Wickwar, Ricardo Ramirez
All Current Publications
Billbugs are weevils, a type of beetle, in the genus Sphenophorus. At least 10 billbug species are known pests of turfgrass and can be found in both warm and cool season turfgrasses throughout the United States. Though billbug adults do feed on the leaves of turfgrasses, it is the larvae that cause visible damage. Larvae feed within the stems and on roots of grasses, leading to the development of yellow or brown patches, with the potential to escalate into large patches of dead turfgrass. Billbug management in turfgrass presents a number of unique challenges, but early monitoring and informed integration …

The Views And Movement Of The Earth Liberation Front (Elf) Movement Towards Global Capitalism, Falhan Hakiki, Uswatun Hasanah Nasution
Jurnal Politik
The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) movement was originally part of the Earth First! Movement and uses agitative and collaborative rhetoric in its actions. However, in 1992, the ELF broke away from Earth First! by changing its methods to those of direct action, attacking entities and symbols that represent global capitalism. The ELF’s departure becomes an exciting starting point to analyze the ELF’s view toward global capitalism through qualitative research methods. We used a framework encompassing deep ecology, social movements, and international structures. In the typology of social movements, the ELF movement belongs to the revolutionary deep ecology movement typology, which …

Young voters' low level of political knowledge, which impacts political participation, is still a phenomenon today. The influence of political knowledge on young voters' behavior is still being debated, and there is little empirical evidence, especially regarding political knowledge and voting behavior enhanced through specific educational programs. Therefore, an effective education program is needed to increase political knowledge and the desire of young voters to participate in general elections. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of educational programs in increasing political knowledge and shaping voting behavior among young voters in South Kalimantan Local Elections (Pilkada). We used a quasi-experimental …

In principle, World Trade Organization (WTO) prohibit each member states to make policy, both tarrif and non tarrif, which potentially disturb international trade. Nevertheless, there are exceptions that can be used by the state as a basis for justification to hold trade policy which consider contratry to WTO law. One of them is to protect public morality. The Halal Product Assurance Act (UUJPH) stipulate obligation of halal certification for food products that enter, circulate and trade in Indonesia. This act is considered as a protective and discriminatory policy. This research founds that although some provisions in UUJPH are discriminatory and …

Health is an important basis for the continuity of human life. Every human being has the right to have access to safe, quality, and affordable health services. However, in reality health services in Indonesia still have several obstacles, for examples the lack of health care for remote areas which is hindered by distance and time. Especially during the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a solution is needed to serve public health without violating the regulations that enforce Large-Scale Social Restrictions (PSBB) to prevent the spread of the virus. For this reason, one of the efforts that can be carried …

The right to reproductive health is a part of the human rights regime that must be guaranteed by states. Provisions of women’s right to reproductive health in Indonesia are found separately in various legal instruments. However, the regulations are not comprehensive, vague, and gender-biased. Using human rights and feminist perspective, this article analyses the issues relating to women’s right to reproductive health in statutes and other legal instruments, as well as formulates a concept of revision of the law of women’s right to reproductive health. This article concludes that regulations regarding women’s right to reproductive health contain provisions that are …

Acute Thrombosis Of Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery During Anaphylactic Reaction To Contrast Dye, John Cox, Cali Clark, Zachary Anderson
Student Publications
Anaphylaxis is a systemic inflammatory response to an antigen and can result in hemodynamic compromise. While uncommon, it remains an important differential diagnosis in the setting of intraprocedural hypotension. Acute thrombosis has been associated with anaphylaxis and should be suspected based on clinical symptoms. We describe a clinical case of intraprocedural anaphylaxis secondary to intravenous contrast dye leading to hypotension and acute thrombosis of the left anterior descending coronary artery.

Consensus, Convergence, And Covid-19: The Ethical Role Of Religious Reasons In Leaders’ Response To Covid-19, Marilie Coetsee
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Focusing on current efforts to persuade the public to comply with COVID-19 best practices, this essay examines what role appeals to religious reasons should (or should not) play in leaders’ attempts to secure followers’ acceptance of group policies in contexts of religious and moral pluralism. While appeals to followers’ religious commitments can be helpful in promoting desirable public health outcomes, they also raise moral concerns when made in the contexts of secular institutions with religiously diverse participants. In these contexts, leaders who appeal to religious reasons as bases of justification for imposing COVID policies may seem to fail to show …

Comparing Survival And Cause-Specific Mortality Of Different Translocation Release Methods For Desert Bighorn Sheep, Taylor S. Daily, Carlos E. Gonzalez, Louis A. Harveson, Warren C. Conway, Froylan Hernandez
Western North American Naturalist
Historically, desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis mexicana) were prevalent throughout the Trans-Pecos region of Texas. However, they were extirpated by the 1960s due to unregulated hunting, habitat loss, predation, and disease transmission from livestock. Restoration efforts have been successfully conducted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to increase population numbers of resident (i.e., animals that currently populate a region of interest) desert bighorn sheep at Black Gap Wildlife Management Area (BGWMA) through the use of translocations. Because there is a lack of knowledge on alternative release methods for large mammal translocations, our goals were to monitor cause-specific …

An Improvement Of Resource Consumption In Wireless Sensor Network (Wsn) Using Compressive Sensing.Pdf, Maizatul Akmal Ibrahim, Norkhushaini Awang
Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) refers to a group of spatially dispersed and dedicated sensors designed to monitor and record the physical conditions of the environment and organise the data collected at a central location. One of the problems in wireless sensor network (WSN) is the low computational resources available which is the limited battery life of sensor nodes. Hence, one of the ways to prolong the lifetime is to implement Low energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH). The Compressive Sensing (CS) algorithm has been implemented to the network through Cluster Head (CH) to further the lifetime longevity. CS is a technique …

This paper will provide an overview of suicide prevalence among South Asian Americans who constitute nearly one-third of Asian Americans and 1.7 percent of the United States population. South Asians, late 20th century immigrants, are a numerally small percentage of the population in the United States. As a distinct ethnic population despite significant diversity within, South Asians encounter unique challenges with myriad sub-cultures and struggles that make them vulnerable and underrepresented in policy and service utilization in mental health and health care due to various barriers. These conditions create vulnerability among first and subsequent generations as they go through social …

Differential Function And Maturation Of Human Stem Cell-Derived Islets After Transplantation, Kristina G Maxwell, Michelle H Kim, Sarah E Gale, Jeffrey R Millman
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Insulin-producing stem cell-derived islets (SC-islets) provide a virtually unlimited cell source for diabetes cell replacement therapy. While SC-islets are less functional when first differentiated in vitro compared to isolated cadaveric islets, transplantation into mice has been shown to increase their maturation. To understand the effects of transplantation on maturation and function of SC-islets, we examined the effects of cell dose, transplantation strategy, and diabetic state in immunocompromised mice. Transplantation of 2 and 5, but not 0.75 million SC-islet cells underneath the kidney capsule successfully reversed diabetes in mice with pre-existing diabetes. SQ and intramuscular injections failed to reverse diabetes at …
