Jnk And Nf-Κb Cell Signaling Pathways In Cardiovascular Disease Present Potential Targets For Curcumin Therapy, Mary Richfield
Jnk And Nf-Κb Cell Signaling Pathways In Cardiovascular Disease Present Potential Targets For Curcumin Therapy, Mary Richfield
Senior Honors Theses
Curcumin (diferuloylmethane) is a compound derived from the rhizomes of Curcumin longa that has been long used for medicinal purposes. Curcumin alleviates the pathology of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, aneurysm, and cardiomyopathy. The mechanism of curcumin therapy is under active research. The NF-κB and JNK pathways are two that curcumin interacts with to block inflammatory processes, apoptosis, and fibrotic tissue remodeling to prevent the pathologies of cardiovascular disease. While curcumin has demonstrated powerful mediation of cardiovascular disease, its bioavailability in body tissues is limited due to the instability and hydrophobicity of its structure. Further work is underway to stabilize …

The Cutaneous Microbiome Of The Eastern Red-Spotted Newt (Notophthalmus Viridescens) And Its Role As Defense Against Fungal Pathogens, Joseph Bierbaum
Senior Honors Theses
Chytridiomycosis is a life-threatening disease which infects amphibian species worldwide. Chytrid fungi Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans have been found to be the primary causes of chytridiomycosis. In past research, it has been found that the skin microbiome of certain amphibian species could have fungal inhibition properties, reducing the effects of the chytrid fungi. In this study, 15 eastern red-spotted newts (Notophthalmus viridescens) were collected, to determine if cutaneous bacteria of the newts secrete antifungal compounds. Pure cultures of each bacterium morphotype were produced from mass culture plates, with 188 morphotypes being isolated. The antifungal properties …
The Role Of Mtorc1 In Autophagy As It Relates To Cancer, Olivia Robinson
The Role Of Mtorc1 In Autophagy As It Relates To Cancer, Olivia Robinson
Senior Honors Theses
The mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1, mTORC1, is composed of several subunit proteins with many cellular responsibilities including participation in a complex cell signaling cascade leading to autophagy, which is the regulated degradation of cell components. mTORC1 is frequently mutated or dysregulated within human cancer. Normally, mTORC1 functions to provide efficient regulation of autophagy according to intracellular levels of growth factors, amino acids, nutrients, oxygen levels, and more that can either inhibit mTORC1 and upregulate autophagy or activate mTORC1 and downregulate autophagy. A better understanding of mTORC1 is imperative to preparing cancer therapy treatments. Various cancerous tissue types require …
Communicating Comfort In Crisis: A Literature Review On Overcoming The Emergency Room Environment To Foster The Nurse-Patient Relationship, Faith G. Davenport
Communicating Comfort In Crisis: A Literature Review On Overcoming The Emergency Room Environment To Foster The Nurse-Patient Relationship, Faith G. Davenport
Senior Honors Theses
The average emergency room patient is not receiving the compassionate nurse-patient communication that patients experience on other hospital floors. Fewer positive nurse-patient interactions prompt patients to state that they feel uncomforted and dissatisfied on hospital exit surveys, inciting hospital management to investigate how to reverse this trend to retain their federal funding. Emergency room nurses cite multiple barriers inherent in their work environment that prevent them from building rapport with their patients, including a layout not conducive to private conversations, strict time constraints, and a fluctuating workload. Working for a prolonged period under these conditions is driving many nurses to …

ACL injuries are a significant risk for athletes across sports. One of the sports that reports the highest rate of ACL injury is wrestling. The mechanism of injury among wrestlers appears to be unique and has limited data compared to other sports. Several nonmodifiable risk factors have been studied for ACL injury, as well as several modifiable risk factors that include BMI, muscular composition, and high-risk movements. The hamstring to quadriceps strength ratio (H:Q) is one aspect of muscular composition that has received little attention in collegiate wrestlers. The purpose of this study was to analyze the H:Q strength ratio …
The Yeast Glucose Sensing Receptor Is Stabilized By Interaction With Casein Kinases, Emma E. Mohler
The Yeast Glucose Sensing Receptor Is Stabilized By Interaction With Casein Kinases, Emma E. Mohler
Senior Honors Theses
Many metabolic diseases are rooted in the inability to process glucose or regulate its uptake. These processes can be explored using yeast as a model. Rgt2 is a glucose sensing receptor in yeast, and it detects glucose concentration outside the cell. This receptor is present on the plasma membrane in high glucose conditions but absent in low glucose. Western blot and a yeast two-hybrid assay were used to investigate the relationship between Rgt2 and the plasma membrane-tethered yeast casein kinases, Yck1 and Yck2. This research demonstrated that in high glucose, Rgt2 is stabilized on the plasma membrane by interaction with …

Impact Of Risk Perception And Risk Tolerance On Investment Portfolio Decisions, Claire Covey
Senior Honors Theses
Average individual investor returns drastically underperform standard investment benchmarks, with common attributing factors including relying on instincts and overconfidence in trading ability. Neural processing, financial risk, risk perception, and risk tolerance literature show how instinctual reactions form and how those reactions affect risk decision-making under the Prospect theory. Examining the effect of neural processing and risk framing on subjective risk perception allows a measurement of the indirect impact on risk tolerance. The stable factors of risk tolerance directly impact investment risk decisions. There are implications of accurately assessing risk tolerance in a client/advisor relationship. Advisor application of a proper risk …

The Pathology And Treatment Of Osteoporosis, Shea Munnikhuysen
The Pathology And Treatment Of Osteoporosis, Shea Munnikhuysen
Senior Honors Theses
Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bone fragility and decreased bone mass. Osteocytes and signaling molecules regulate the function of osteoclasts and osteoblasts. The RANK pathway is a key regulator in osteoclastogenesis. When the osteoclastic function is greater than osteoblastic function, bone integrity decreases. Causes of osteoporosis include hormones, medications, and diet. Treatments for osteoporosis are hormonal, medicinal, and lifestyle changes. More research needs to be done to find more effective medications with fewer negative side effects to improve the overall quality of life for patients. Currently, lab trials are being done on potential new medications to treat osteoporosis.

Before the Perseverance rover landing, the acoustic environment of Mars was unknown. Models predicted that: (1) atmospheric turbulence changes at centimetre scales or smaller at the point where molecular viscosity converts kinetic energy into heat1, (2) the speed of sound varies at the surface with frequency2,3 and (3) high-frequency waves are strongly attenuated with distance in CO2 (refs. 2,3,4). However, theoretical models were uncertain because of a lack of experimental data at low pressure and the difficulty to characterize turbulence or attenuation in a closed environment. Here, using Perseverance microphone recordings, we present the first characterization of the acoustic environment …
