Feasibility Of Introduced Species Into The Westhampton Lake For Pollution Control, Kathryn Grage Apr 2022

Feasibility Of Introduced Species Into The Westhampton Lake For Pollution Control, Kathryn Grage

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

Westhampton Lake, located at the University of Richmond in Virginia is a man made lake that feeds into the James river. The lake itself suffers from pollution and above average nutrient loads from external sources. There have been efforts to try to reduce some pollution from the lake but this research proposes and explores the viability of introducing species into the lake for the same purpose. Two types of animals proposed for introduction into the lake are common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae). Sterilized common carp are proposed as a short term solution to removal of invasive …

Economic Consequences Of The Wolf Comeback In The Western United States, Dana Hoag, Stewart W. Breck, Kevin Crooks, Becky Niemiec

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Gray wolves were eradicated from most of the United States in the 1940’s but have made a comeback in parts of their historic range over the last two decades. First reintroduced into the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and central Idaho in the mid-1990’s, wolves have subsequently dispersed into at least 7 western states. Coloradoans became the latest state to take interest in bolstering wolf populations, as residents passed a ballot initiative in November 2020 to reintroduce a self-sustaining population of gray wolves by the end of 2023. Conflicts between people in rural areas that might incur costs (such as livestock loss) …

National Trends In Pectus Excavatum Repair: Patient Age, Facility Volume, And Outcomes, Shale J. Mack, Brian M. Till, Charles Huang, Darshak Thosani, Uzma Rahman, Tyler Grenda, Nathaniel R. Evans Iii, Olugbenga Okusanya

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Background: There is limited data on the adult repair of pectus excavatum (PE). Existing literature is largely limited to single institution experiences and suggests that adults undergoing modified Nuss repair may have worse outcomes than pediatric and adolescent patients. Using a representative national database, this analysis is the first to describe trends in demographics, outcomes, charges, and facility volume for adults undergoing modified Nuss procedure.

Methods: Because of a coding change associated with ICD-10, a retrospective cohort analysis using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) for patients 12 or older undergoing modified Nuss repair between 2016-2018 was possible. Pearson's χ2 and …

Baseball Pitching Arm Three-Dimensional Inertial Parameter Calculations From Body Composition Imaging And A Novel Overweight Measure For Youth Pitching Arm Kinetics, Dalton J. Jennings, Scott K. Reaves, Jeffrey Sklar, Colin Brown, John Mcphee, Scott Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch

Biomedical Engineering

Many baseball pitching studies have used inverse dynamics to assess throwing arm kinetics as high and repetitive kinetics are thought to be linked to pitching injuries. However, prior studies have not used participant-specific body segment inertial parameters (BSIPs), which are thought to improve analysis of high-acceleration motions and overweight participants. This study's objectives were to (1) calculate participant-specific BSIPs using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measures, (2) compare inverse dynamic calculations of kinetics determined by DXA-calculated BSIPs (full DXA-driven inverse dynamics) against kinetics using the standard inverse dynamics approach with scaled BSIPs (scaled inverse dynamics), and (3) examine associations between …

Immunomodulatory Effects And Clinical Benefits Of Intravenous Immunoglobulin In Myasthenia Gravis., Marinos C Dalakas, Andreas Meisel

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Introduction Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an antibody-mediated disease that develops in the majority of patients mainly as a result of acetylcholine receptor (AChR) autoantibodies. This process is mediated by a series of immunoregulatory events. Therapeutic targets for MG include suppression of circulating antibodies or antibody production, suppression of complement activation, and immunomodulation of cytokines or T cells. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) has an effect on all of these mechanisms. Areas covered This narrative review explores the broad immunomodulatory effects of IVIg in MG and provides an update on IVIg treatment for MG. Expert opinion IVIg has a range of immunomodulatory effects …

The Role Of The Complement System In Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy: Implications For Complement-Targeted Therapies., Luis A Querol, Hans-Peter Hartung, Richard A Lewis, Pieter A Van Doorn, Timothy R Hammond, Nazem Atassi, Miguel Alonso-Alonso, Marinos Dalakas

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is the most common, heterogeneous, immune-mediated neuropathy, characterized by predominant demyelination of motor and sensory nerves. CIDP follows a relapsing-remitting or a progressive course and causes substantial disability. The pathogenesis of CIDP involves a complex interplay of multiple aberrant immune responses, creating a pro-inflammatory environment, subsequently inflicting damage on the myelin sheath. Though the exact triggers are unclear, diverse immune mechanisms encompassing cellular and humoral pathways are implicated. The complement system appears to play a role in promoting macrophage-mediated demyelination. Complement deposition in sural nerve biopsies, as well as signs of increased complement activation in …

How Do Individuals Justify And Rationalize Their Criminal Behaviors In Online Romance Fraud?, Martin Offei, Francis Andoh-Baidoo, Emmanuel Wusuhon Yanibo Ayaburi, David Asamoah

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Online romance fraud (ORF) is a growing concern with such serious negative consequences as financial loss or suicide to the victim. Majority of empirical studies on online romance fraud using attachment, deception, protection motivation and relation theories focus on the victim. While neutralization offers insights into how individuals justify their deviant behaviors, the results have not been consistent in different contexts. In the ORF context, offenders may not only rely on justifying techniques but also rationalize their actions by denying risk both to the victim and the offender. Thus, drawing from the neutralization and denial of risk theories, we develop …

Dismantling The Dichotomy: Latinx Identity And Assimilation In Early Childhood Education, Rocio J. Olvera

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

An increasing number of children in early childhood education (ECE) are Latinx. Drawing on ethnic identity, culture, and language, this thesis describes the dichotomy between adherences to one’s ethnic identity and assimilation into the dominant societal culture. This paper describes how assimilation harms students and provokes negative implications such as identity loss, confusion, and loss of cultural ties. Dismantling the dichotomy is possible through the power of language, culture, and strengthening teacher-parent relationships.
