This research report intends to provide insight into the unexpected rise of Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) issuance between 2010 and 2021. As SPAC investments feature greater degrees of uncertainty, risk, and “moral hazard” than Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) but essentially accomplish the same result, it is hypothesized that since prior research suggests a positive correlation between increased investor confidence and IPO issuance, a similar, yet stronger correlation also exists between increased confidence and SPAC volume. Although little prior research has been conducted investigating the role of confidence in SPAC issuance, as SPAC investing requires great trust and confidence in …

Clinical Trial Participation: Blockchain Matters, Adwitya M. Singh
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
Low clinical trial participation rates continue to negatively impact the execution of applied research for the development of novel biopharmaceutical drugs and treatments. The dominant explanation for this trend can be attributed to a combination of practical and psychosocial factors considered by prospective trial participants. Previous research has shown such factors to include logistical inaccessibility, trial randomization, distrust of medical establishments, and most notably the use of placebo/control groups. However, the existing literature has not yet considered the potential effects of the application of blockchain technology within trials as a means of influencing the level of patient trust in trials. …

COVID-19 safety protocols over the past two years moved nearly the entirety of communication online and created a single channel through which individuals could interact with their network: social media. In 2018, Huang, Cheng, Huang, and Teng used relational cohesion theory and five-factor personality theory to develop a framework to predict the personality types that develop strong social networks, finding that openness and agreeableness were positively related to factors of relational cohesion (Huang et al., 2018). I extended their research into the space of COVID-19 network experiences given the reliance on social media, with a lens towards online vs. in-person …

"Intangible Asset Valuation: Can Metrics Relating To Intangible Assets Help Explain Stock Returns In The Technology Industry? ", Hannah Underwood
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
This study investigates the relationship between intangible assets and stock prices within the technology sector, addressing a critical gap in financial accounting standards and investment decision-making. Despite the growing predominance of intangible assets, which comprise 90% of S&P 500 assets, current accounting practices under IAS 38 lead to substantial challenges in valuing such assets. This results in significant discrepancies between a company's book and market values, which can mislead investors about the true financial health of a company. The research explores whether the perception of a company's intangible assets, through metrics such as Customer Lifetime Value (CIV), Environmental, Social, and …

"Pyramid Schemes Or Profitable Investments? Analyzing The Stocks Of Multi-Level Marketing Companies", Katy Delahunt
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
Multi-level marketing (MLM) companies, also known as network marketing companies, represent a controversial yet financially significant sector within the direct sales industry. Despite being associated with dubious profit structures where a majority of participants either lose money or earn minimal profits, MLMs legally operate on a model that relies heavily on recruitment rather than traditional product sales. This structure has drawn scrutiny and repeated investigations by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), highlighting that most involved in MLMs make little to no money. Despite these challenges, MLMs are a $35 billion industry, with companies like Herbalife demonstrating significant market valuations. This …

"Comparing Carbon Trading: Cap And Trade Programs At 3 Scales ", Colin Murphy
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
There exists a number of Cap and Trade programs surrounding carbon emissions. An overview of their components and rationale is given in the Introduction. Examining three programs at various scales through the lenses of performance metrics and design characteristics, the Analysis section seeks to represent and contextualize the three Emissions Trading Schemes (ETSs). Through this analysis, I am able to better understand how each policy came to be developed, how differences in design affect the performance and subsequent changes to the program, and how scale may play a role in the existence of these programs.

"Paw Patrol" has significantly influenced the landscape of consumer products since its inception by Keith Chapman, who developed the concept post the 2008 economic downturn. Beyond just a children's television show, it exemplifies the profound impact of strategic character creation and aggressive licensing models on merchandise sales, which surpassed $1 billion in 2018. This study investigates the broader phenomenon of character licensing, which accounted for 43.8% of all global retail sales of licensed merchandise in 2019, showing a marked increase from the previous year. Despite the economic success of such licensing, research on consumer behavior related to character-based products remains …
The Effects Of Loneliness On Collaboration, Israt Zaman Ali
The Effects Of Loneliness On Collaboration, Israt Zaman Ali
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
This study examines the multifaceted impacts of loneliness on workplace dynamics, particularly within youth populations in the Gen-Z and millennial cohorts. Amidst the rising prevalence of loneliness, often compared to the severity of smoking 15 cigarettes a day, this research focuses on how loneliness affects aspects of work life such as performance, group commitment, locus of control, and fear of appearing incompetent. Utilizing correlational and regression analyses through SPSS, findings indicate that while loneliness does not significantly correlate with overall performance, it negatively influences group commitment and intrinsic locus of control, and positively affects extrinsic locus of control and fear …
An Examination Of The Impacts Of Beaver Dam Mimicry Structures On Groundwater Surface-Water Interactions In Lower Mountain Riparian Systems, Mercedes D. Salazar
An Examination Of The Impacts Of Beaver Dam Mimicry Structures On Groundwater Surface-Water Interactions In Lower Mountain Riparian Systems, Mercedes D. Salazar
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Beaver dam analogs (BDAs) are a low cost, low disturbance stream restoration technique that may improve surface-water/groundwater interactions and wetland connectivity. BDAs are intended to imitate the effects of natural beaver dams by slowing stream velocity, promoting infiltration, increasing dry-season streamflow, aggrading the streambed, and capturing organic matter and other nutrients. This study was conducted to evaluate the degree to which these objectives were being met at a study site on Perkins Gulch, southwest Montana, USA. The Perkins Gulch study area can be summarized by four gauging sites that separate three reaches along the creek. By detailing background processes and …

Right Of Self, Mitchell F. Crusto
Washington and Lee Law Review
The exercise of free will against tyranny is the single principle that defines the American spirit, our history, and our culture. From the American Revolution through the Civil War, the two World Wars, the Civil Rights Movement, and up to today, Americans have embraced the fundamental rights of the individual against wrongful governmental intrusion. This is reflected in our foundational principles, including the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights to the United States Constitution, the Reconstruction Amendments, the Nineteenth Amendment, and, more recently, in the Supreme Court’s recognition of fundamental individual rights within the Constitution’s penumbras. However, there is no …

The Future Of Testamentary Capacity, Reid Kress Weisbord, David Horton
Washington and Lee Law Review
Recently, the #FreeBritney saga cast a harsh spotlight on state guardianship systems. Yet despite their serious flaws, guardianship regimes have benefited from waves of reform. Indeed, since the 1970s, most jurisdictions have taken steps to protect the autonomy of people with cognitive, intellectual, or developmental disabilities (CIDD). Likewise, lawmakers are currently experimenting with supported decision-making (SDM): an alternative to guardianship designed to help individuals with CIDD make their own choices. These changes are no panacea, but they have modernized a field that once summarily denied “idiots” and “lunatics” power over their affairs.
However, in a related context, the legal system’s …

California And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Statutory Employee Classification Scheme, Richard H. Gilliland Iii
Washington and Lee Law Review
The battle over worker classification between state governments, on the one hand, and gig economy companies, on the other, has raged since at least the first time someone ordered an Uber. Nowhere has this battle played out more prominently in recent years than in California. In 2019, the state legislature passed AB 5, a bill which adopted a stringent independent contractor standard and effectively classified all gig economy workers as employees of the companies whose apps they use to find work. AB 5’s ripple effects were enormous—the significant popularity of gig economy apps among consumers launched what might have been …

Where Deaths Are Increasing The Fastest In The U.S., Richey Piiparinen
All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications
The findings show that Ohio and Cuyahoga County perform poorly when it comes to mortality rate. Ohio had the 9th highest mortality rate in the nation in 2021. Ohio also had the 8th highest increase in mortality rate from 2019 to 2021. For large counties, Cuyahoga County had the 3rd highest mortality rate in 2021. A few avenues are explored as to why.

Stuck In The Net: Promoting Global Shark And Ray Populations Through National Sustainability Import Laws, Kelsey Peden
Stuck In The Net: Promoting Global Shark And Ray Populations Through National Sustainability Import Laws, Kelsey Peden
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Shark and ray populations are crucial to a healthy oceanic ecosystem, but regulation of harm is difficult to manage for these highly migratory species. The massive decline of shark and ray populations has triggered an international response, including collaborative protections against the overharvest and sale of endangered groups. However, recent studies show that protections must extend past direct harvest because an estimated thirty to fifty percent of population kills occur through “accidental by-catch” in the fishing process. The United States has attempted to fill some of the missing protections for sharks in national waters, as well as to implement bans …

Incidental Take Under The Migratory Bird Treaty Act And How To Share The Skies, Erika Bosack
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
This Note will focus on one piece of legislation that can protect birds from wind turbines: the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 (“MBTA” or “the Act”). The MBTA makes it illegal to hunt, kill, capture, import, export, sell, buy, pursue, possess, transport, or take a bird on the list of protected species, which covers hundreds of types of birds as well as their nests and eggs. The law forbids these acts in any manner, by any means, and at any time. The text itself does not explicitly state whether intentional and unintentional acts should both carry liability, which has …
