Realist Review: A Tool For Interpreting The Impact Of Structural Stigma On Workplace Bullying-Associated Trauma, Laura Dzurec, Jennifer L. Embree, Monica Kennison, Matthew S. Howard Feb 2026

Realist Review: A Tool For Interpreting The Impact Of Structural Stigma On Workplace Bullying-Associated Trauma, Laura Dzurec, Jennifer L. Embree, Monica Kennison, Matthew S. Howard

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Stigma is a mark of disgrace emerging from shared sets of negative attitudes and inaccurate beliefs. To be stigmatized is to be identified as ‘less-than,’ to be ‘disapproved of,’ to be the focus of often-uninformed criticism. Workplace bullying victims, those individuals targeted by bullies in their workplaces and inveigled/taken in by their bully counterparts’ subtly demeaning affronts, simultaneously become victims of stigma (Dzurec et al., 2014). Recent study data (Howard et al., under review) suggest that for victims, bullies’ affronting behaviors may, ultimately, override personal beliefs. Bullies’ stories come to own those victimized, acting surreptitiously and imperceptibly to direct and …

Leveraging Best Practice Initiatives To Develop An Innovative And Proactive Approach To Stress Management, Shannon Cronin Patel, John Hunt, Mary Law

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Background: A 2023 Premiere Inc. survey reported that greater than 40% of US healthcare professionals have experienced at least one episode of workplace violence during the past two years. Confounding issues position healthcare professionals at increased risk for experiencing daily stress inducing situations including but not limited to: staffing related deficiencies, increased incidences of workplace violence, and increased risk for secondary victim incidents that perpetuate wounded healers. Despite increases in stress inducing situations, current stress mitigating interventions remain reactive, antiquated, and fail to meet the emotional needs of healthcare professionals. Current stress and critical incident management models provide reactive support …

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Food insecurity remains a critical public health concern, particularly in rural, low-income communities. In 2023, 13.5% of United States households experienced food insecurity, with rates in Tennessee (15.6%) exceeding the national average. Produce prescription programs have emerged as a strategy to improve food access and promote healthier eating behaviors. This study presents an evaluation of Appalachian Farmacy, a produce prescription program in Northeast Tennessee designed to increase fruit and vegetable consumption among individuals receiving Medicaid, Medicare, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Program evaluation methods included semi-structured interviews for process evaluation and pre- and post-surveys for outcome evaluation. Interviews …

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, partly because many patients are diagnosed at late stages, highlighting the urgent need for effective early detection and intervention strategies. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT)-based screening reduces lung cancer mortality in high-risk populations defined by age and smoking history; however, the uptake of LDCT remains low among eligible individuals. Compounding this issue, modelling studies estimate that nearly half of lung cancers occur in individuals who do not meet eligibility criteria for LDCT-based lung cancer screening under current guidelines. Moreover, LDCT-based screening has inherent limitations, including a high rate of false-positive results …

SUPT16H encodes a subunit of the FACT (FAcilitates Chromatin Transcription) complex, a histone chaperone essential for maintaining chromatin integrity during transcription, replication, and DNA repair. Pathogenic de novo SUPT16H missense variants have previously been linked to neurodevelopmental disorders in eight individuals. Here, we expand the genotypic and phenotypic spectrum by identifying 24 additional individuals harboring ultrarare heterozygous missense or truncating variants, who share overlapping clinical features including intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, hypotonia, and characteristic craniofacial dysmorphism. To elucidate the underlying mechanisms, we generated a supt16h knockout zebrafish model using CRISPR/Cas9. The supt16h loss-of-function (LOF) model recapitulated key patient phenotypes …

Direct Synthesis Of Bicyclo[1.1.1]Pentane (Bcp) Boronates From Carboxylic Acids, Yongchen Wang, Jess C Tang, Gang Wu, Julian G West

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane (BCP) boronic esters are crucial intermediates for accessing BCP-containing drugs with improved pharmacokinetic profiles, yet their synthesis typically relies on pre-formed redox-active esters derived from carboxylic acids. Here we report a general, single-step method for the direct conversion of carboxylic acids into BCP boronic esters. Upon irradiation of carboxylic acids with [1.1.1]propellane and bis(pinacolato)diboron (B2pin2) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), BCP boronates are obtained in good yields, which are further enhanced by the addition of an iron catalyst. Mechanistic studies suggest that photolytic cleavage of a B2pin2–DMSO complex initiates decarboxylation via hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), while iron catalysis enables a …

Gradual reduction of cerebral blood flow occurs with aging, and it is a major cause of vascular dementia, a group of dementias with a cerebrovascular component. Interestingly, patients who have suffered a vascular insult may develop retinopathy, which may occur as an early symptom of vascular dementia. Several rodent models using young animals have been generated to mimic retinopathy caused by cerebral hypoperfusion; however, given that aging is an important factor in developing vascular dementia and hypoperfusion retinopathy, we propose to use aged (17-month-old) mice in a model of cerebral hypoperfusion. In this model, we implant two metallic micro-coils (0.16 …

The Impact Of Integrating Social Benefit Requirements For Urban Green Infrastructure And Place Identity Attributes To Enhance The Sense Of Place - Case Study Of Central Park, Madinaty, New Cairo City, Egypt, Ibrahim Magdi Mohammed, Rehab Abdelfatah Abdel Aziz Mahmoud

Mansoura Engineering Journal

This research develops an integrated model that links the social benefit requirements of Urban Green Infrastructure (UGI) with the non-physical attributes of Place Identity (PI) to enhance the Sense of Place (SOP) in contemporary urban environments. The need for this integration arises from limitations in current planning frameworks, which often prioritize ecological performance while overlooking cultural, perceptual, and behavioral dimensions that shape user attachment and belonging. The study adopts an inductive and synthesis-based approach to identify key UGI indicators across environmental, social, economic, and spatial dimensions, alongside PI attributes related to places’ legibility, uniqueness, publicness and territoriality, place’s identification. To …

Assessing The Geomechanical Modelling Of Underground Reservoir For Co₂ Storage Trapping Mechanisms, Bonavian Hasiholan, Mohammed Ali Farea, Elhassan Mostafa Abdallah, Sami Abdelrahman M. Yagoub, Yasir Mukhtar

Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Simulation with Applications

Effective carbon dioxide (CO₂) storage is essential for mitigating climate change amid increasing global greenhouse gas emissions. This study investigates the influence of geomechanics on CO₂ storage performance within carbon capture and storage (CCS), focusing on structural, residual, and solubility trapping mechanisms using a fully coupled modeling framework. Two numerical models, with and without geomechanical effects, are developed to evaluate impacts on reservoir behavior, CO₂ migration, and trapping efficiency. Each mechanism is analyzed separately and within an integrated framework to assess their combined contributions. Results indicate that geomechanical coupling increases reservoir pressure, reduces CO₂ flow velocity, enhances migration control, and …

Quality Improvement Project: Integrating Modified Early Warning Score (Mews) Criteria Into A Local Community College's Nursing Curriculum, Breanna C. Bell

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

There is an international priority for early recognition of patient deterioration with adequate responses to facilitate patient safety. The modified early warning score (MEWS) tool is commonly used to identify and respond to acute patient deterioration, so it is effective to educate nursing students on its use to influence their future practice. However, there is a lack of a curriculum to integrate MEWS criteria for associate degree in nursing (ADN) students at a local community college. This quality improvement project aimed to enhance ADN faculty’s self-efficacy and ability to integrate MEWS criteria into the didactic curriculum at a community college …

Selenium-Thioredoxin Axis Contributes To Ferroptosis Resistance In Pancreatic Cancer Cells, Arslan Amer, Micah Olamide Idowu, Aqsa Ahsan, Alyssa A. Abbas, Tahiyat Alothaim, Xiaohu Tang

Michigan Tech Publications

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) shows substantial heterogeneity in cysteine dependence and ferroptosis sensitivity. We identify two PDAC subtypes distinguished by EMT status: mesenchymal-like cells are highly cysteine-dependent and rapidly undergo ferroptosis upon cystine deprivation or system xc− inhibition, whereas epithelial-type cells are ferroptosis-resistant. Selenium supplementation protects cells from erastin-induced ferroptosis, and this protection persists even when intracellular glutathione (GSH) is depleted, supporting an additional GPX4-independent protective mechanism. Sepp1 knockdown does not alter sensitivity, indicating that selenium’s protective effect is independent of Sepp1. Instead, epithelial-type cells rely on both cytosolic and mitochondrial thioredoxin reductases (TrxR1 and TrxR2) to maintain ferroptosis …
