Variation In Student Perceptions Of Higher Education Course Quality And Difficulty As A Result Of Widespread Implementation Of Online Education During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Joseph Cavanaugh, Stephen J. Jacquemin, Christine Junker

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic affected higher education in a myriad of ways. One of the most notable effects however was the rapid and sudden transition of nearly all courses at most institutions to an online environment. And while there are a growing number of courses offered online already, this transition to nearly 100% remote education presented numerous challenges for instructors and students of face-to-face and hybrid style courses. Since student perceptions are closely tied to recruitment and retention, it is important to know if there are differences in student perceptions present in the way different courses are …

Barriers Identified By Nursing Leaders In Supporting Nursing Research, Marietta Sperry Apr 2022

Barriers Identified By Nursing Leaders In Supporting Nursing Research, Marietta Sperry

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Background/Intro:

Nursing leaders at acute care hospitals often lack knowledge of how best to support nurses who wish to engage in nursing research and evidence-based practice. Inclusion of the nurses who have direct bedside contact with patients is integral in improving patient outcomes.

Problem Description-Patient facing nurses have cited a lack of leadership support in conducting research. A lack of research knowledge by nursing leaders has also previously been identified. I determined to learn other barriers nursing leaders would identify and if a brief module on basics of nursing research might mitigate these barriers.

Purpose/aims:

To determine what …

From Utilitarianism To Fordism: How Americans Brought The Panopticon Home, Katherine Hoppe Apr 2022

From Utilitarianism To Fordism: How Americans Brought The Panopticon Home, Katherine Hoppe

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

The COVID-19 pandemic forced many not considered essential employees into their homes. Many employers worried about employee accountability, leveraged surveillance techniques to maximize employee performance and ensure productivity. These technologies include screen monitoring software, video recordings of employees within their homes, monitoring of social media, and typing efficiency. While employees continue to work outside of the office, private employers will increasingly monitor employees in spaces traditionally considered private—including the home. As private and public life spheres continue to overlap, privacy for workers may erode. What kinds of surveillance have employees experienced in their homes since the Covid-19 lockdown orders? Moreover, …

The Rural Education Leadership Experience Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic: Perspectives Of School Principals And Staff, Brennan J. Kent Apr 2022

The Rural Education Leadership Experience Amid The Covid-19 Pandemic: Perspectives Of School Principals And Staff, Brennan J. Kent

Education Doctorate Dissertations

Rural school principals faced many challenges through the disruptions of the Covid-19 Pandemic, including their ability to deliver consistent, high-quality education to rural learners. These principals had to quickly learn and adapt to new practices that could permanently transform the school principalship for the future. Principals’ duties multiplied overnight with focusing on the additional needs of students and staff. Although the field of education has been majorly disrupted through past events such as the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, which caused school principals’ priorities to change instantaneously, with decisions often being made on a reactionary basis to ever-changing circumstances. …

Unsettled Law: Social-Movement Conflict, Stare Decisis, And Roe V. Wade, Mary Ziegler Apr 2022

Unsettled Law: Social-Movement Conflict, Stare Decisis, And Roe V. Wade, Mary Ziegler

Connecticut Law Review

With President Donald Trump’s third Supreme Court nomination, the reexamination of Roe v. Wade has become a probability. An increasingly conservative Court will almost certainly not embrace the idea of abortion rights. Instead, the fate of abortion rights will likely turn on the meaning of stare decisis, a doctrine requiring the Court to pay some deference to its past decisions. Stare decisis has recently played a starring role in abortion jurisprudence. In his controlling concurrence in June Medical Services L.L.C. v. Russo, Chief Justice Roberts invoked stare decisis while gutting the substantive rule written into the precedent to which he …

Risk And Rights In Transatlantic Data Transfers: Eu Privacy Law, U.S. Surveillance, And The Search For Common Ground, Ira Rubinstein, Peter Margulies Apr 2022

Risk And Rights In Transatlantic Data Transfers: Eu Privacy Law, U.S. Surveillance, And The Search For Common Ground, Ira Rubinstein, Peter Margulies

Connecticut Law Review

Privacy advocates rightly view the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) decision in Data Protection Commissioner v. Facebook Ireland Ltd. and Maximilian Schrems (Schrems II) as a landmark. But, one stakeholder’s landmark is another’s headache. The CJEU’s decision invalidated the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield agreement governing transatlantic transfers of personal data. Citing U.S. surveillance, the CJEU found that data transfers lacked adequate privacy protections under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The Schrems II decision thus clouded the future of data transfers that help drive the global economy. This Article offers a hybrid approach to safeguard privacy rights …

Analysis Of Clinical Outcomes And Cost-Effectiveness Of Neuromuscular Blocking Drug Reversal In Patients With Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Samantha Kinglsey, Aaron "Mitch" Corn

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Non-depolarizing neuromuscular blockers are used during many surgical procedures to induce muscle relaxation for tracheal intubation and improve surgical conditions for surgeons. The use of these medications requires an agent to be given to fully reverse the effects of the neuromuscular blocking drug. Historically, neostigmine has widely been used as the primary reversal agent. However, sugammadex, a recently FDA approved drug, is also available for the reversal of common neuromuscular blocking drugs, rocuronium and vecuronium. In the literature, sugammadex is widely regarded as a clinically superior reversal agent. But its use is commonly limited to emergent situations due to the …

Effective Hospice Chaplain Ministry, Dawn M. Linder Apr 2022

Effective Hospice Chaplain Ministry, Dawn M. Linder

Doctor of Ministry

This project is a book which examines how Christian hospice chaplains can maintain and utilize their Christian identity and minister effectively to non-Christian/non-religious patients and their families without evangelizing them. It was determined that narrative, or story, is an essential part of each person's life, especially as a person looks back on their life while approaching death. A person's life goals change as death becomes imminent, and with change comes grief. Hospice chaplains can companion the patient as they navigate this unfamiliar territory and help them recognize new goals. Chaplains can help patients look back on their lives to see …

The Theological Structure For Forming Christian Vocational Spirituality: A Practical Method For The Whole Of The Christian Life, Yong Sub Sim

Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses

The Christian church works for reconciliation between God and his creatures through Jesus Christ. For this, the church calls people and helps them hear, understand, recognize and receive the Spirit of God through Jesus. This dissertation explains this process as walking with, working with and following Jesus.

This dissertation builds a theological structure for forming “Christian vocational spirituality” as the whole of the Christian life reconciled with the Spirit of God through Jesus Christ. This theological structure guides the process through which a human being becomes a true Christian being, and a Christian being becomes a true human being reconciled …

The Contemporary American Juvenile Justice System: Revisiting Parens Patriae, Katarzyna Celinska, Amina Cheboubi Apr 2022

The Contemporary American Juvenile Justice System: Revisiting Parens Patriae, Katarzyna Celinska, Amina Cheboubi

Publications and Research

The American juvenile justice system has undergone significant transformations since its inception in the late 19th century. In this paper, the authors seek to analyze the historical context of and subsequent reforms to the juvenile system and process in order to determine whether they remain true to their origins of the legal doctrine of parens patriae. Specifically, the authors contrast rehabilitative notions of parens patriae with the “tough on crime” perspective that developed in the 1990s in response to rising crime rates. This debate is illustrated by landmark Supreme Court cases, waivers to the adult system, increases in the use …

The Analysis And Remediation Of Excess Fluoride In Drinking Water In Isle Of Wight County, Va, Kaleigh Beale Apr 2022

The Analysis And Remediation Of Excess Fluoride In Drinking Water In Isle Of Wight County, Va, Kaleigh Beale

Longwood Senior Theses

Excess fluoride in drinking water can cause fluorosis or brown and yellow staining of the enamel of teeth. In extreme cases, severe damage to teeth and bone structure can develop. In 1993, the World Health Organization set a limit of 1.5 ppm as acceptable for drinking water; however, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, recent water quality reports detected levels of fluoride as high as 4 ppm. The purpose of this study was to investigate several detection and remediation methods of fluoride in drinking water. Detection methods included an ion selective electrode (ISE), dye-based colorimetric methods, and an at-home testing …

Cultivating Meaningful Consultation And Collaboration: Tribal Environmental Protection In Michigan, Zachary Reed Apr 2022

Cultivating Meaningful Consultation And Collaboration: Tribal Environmental Protection In Michigan, Zachary Reed

Masters Theses

In the year 2022, there are 12 federally reaffirmed Native American tribes in Michigan. These tribes all maintain natural resource departments to manage tribal environments. Indigenous groups have a rich history of protection and understanding of the natural world. This connection to land and water has been systematically challenged through patterns of colonialism. Through policy making, revitalization efforts and environmental ethics, the State of Michigan has been improved by tribal natural resource departments. But, while the United States and the State of Michigan recognizes tribal sovereignty, meaningful tribal consultation is inadequate. Through collaborative interviews, historical sources, and contemporary evidence, this …

The Effect Of Gallate Esters On T Cell Immunity, Brianna Cervantes Apr 2022

The Effect Of Gallate Esters On T Cell Immunity, Brianna Cervantes

Longwood Senior Theses

Parabens are used to prevent bacterial growth and are commonly found in cosmetics and personal care products. The structure of parabens is similar to estrogen and can cause increased estrogen activity which unfortunately has been linked to breast cancer. Parabens are endocrine disrupting compounds, which means they disrupt many hormone-regulated systems and could contribute to immune dysfunctions, reproductive disorders, birth defects, or developmental and behavioral disorders. One example of an effect on the immune system is that estrogen regulates CD4 T cell differentiation during pregnancy to induce anti-inflammatory Th2 and Treg phenotypes and reduce the differentiation of inflammatory Th1 and …
