Water Remunicipalization: Insights And Policy Implications From Atlanta, Georgia Case Study, David L. Fretz
Water Remunicipalization: Insights And Policy Implications From Atlanta, Georgia Case Study, David L. Fretz
Student Theses 2015-Present
This paper investigates the ways in which water remunicipalization and the natural right to clean drinking water has affected the livelihood of the population of Atlanta, Georgia. Looking at the failures of water privatization efforts across the globe within the context of the ecosystem resources that water provides, I show in chapter 1 that the privatization of water is antithetical to the core goals of water supply, and an increasingly pressing issue as climate change produces increasing water scarcity. In chapter 2, I analyze the efforts of utility privatization in general through the lens of political science, both in motivations, …

Applying The Circumplex Model To The Examination Of Job Stress, Emily Jade Andrulonis
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study investigated job stress as a dynamic phenomenon and the possibility of job stress spin. The concept of spin is typically associated with affect and examined using the Circumplex Model of Affect. In an effort to better assess job stress, the circumplex model was adapted to reflect the dynamic nature of job stress. One preexisting data set is utilized in this study. In the sample, burnout was collected once using the Oldenberg 15-item Burnout Inventory; experiences of job stress were also collected once using the Stanton measure of work stress. Two items, pumped and excited, were added in the …

Comparing Effectiveness Of Antecedent, Consequence, And Combined Strategies On Teacher Treatment Integrity, Catherine E. Hines
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Classroom management strategies are used to create effective learning environments by reducing problem behavior. When classroom management strategies are not being implemented correctly it can create negative outcomes for teachers and students. By providing antecedent and/or consequence-based procedures treatment integrity can be improved. The purpose of this review was to examine literature on the effectiveness of antecedent, consequence, and combined procedures on teacher treatment integrity of classroom management strategies. Results indicate a significant increase on teacher adherence to classroom management interventions when a treatment integrity procedure is implemented as well. Limitations and future directions are discussed.

"How People Form Judgments Of Low-Income Individuals’ Spending On Basic Versus Higher-Order Needs ", Zheng Qi Di
"How People Form Judgments Of Low-Income Individuals’ Spending On Basic Versus Higher-Order Needs ", Zheng Qi Di
Gabelli School of Business Honors Thesis Collection
This study investigates the impact of financial power on consumer behavior, specifically examining how low-income individuals' expenditure on higher-order psychological needs influences perceptions of their financial rationality and affects support for governmental aid. Drawing from Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which posits that human needs escalate from basic physiological to higher psychological levels such as belonging and self-esteem, this research explores societal judgments towards low-income individuals who allocate financial resources towards non-essential goods. Despite the intuitive understanding that fulfilling higher-order needs enhances well-being, there exists a prevalent belief that low-income individuals should prioritize basic needs. This study reveals that such expenditures …

The Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) concept is the first National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth mission to develop and implement systematic integration of science application needs at the architecture study stage. Prior NASA mission concept and planning activities presumed that science measurement needs would encompasss application measurement needs and so did not explicitly evaluate and include applications at this stage. However, the effort presented here identified, documented and integrated application needs that would not have been included by considering research science needs only. First, a low latency of no greater than 24 hr was identified as the optimal …

The objective of this study was to characterize femur morphology in healthy infants and young children. Anterior-posterior (AP) radiographs of the femur from children age 0-3 years with no history of bone disease were obtained from two children's hospitals and one medical examiner's office. Femur morphological measures (bone length, minimum diaphysis diameter, growth plate width, and femur radius of curvature) and sectional structural measures were determined. Measures were described and compared based on subject age and mass. Relationships between measures and age and mass were evaluated. The 169 AP femur radiographs were obtained from 99 children (59.6% males, median age …

Article 12.4 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) states, "No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of the right to enter his own country." Citizens clearly enjoy Article 12.4 rights, but this article demonstrates that this right reaches beyond the citizenry. Using customary methods of treaty interpretation, including reference to the ICCPR's preparatory works and the jurisprudence of the Human Rights Committee, this article demonstrates that Article 12.4 also forbids States from deporting long-term resident noncitizens both documented and undocumented - except under the rarest circumstances. As a result, the ICCPR right to remain in one's own …

This article focuses on the important role law school deans play as protectors of innovation and faculty scholarship. Like all lawyers, deans have a duty as public citizens for justice and for legal reform when such reform is necessary for the public good. In this time of challenges, including the climate crisis and political upheaval, all lawyers must be sustainability lawyers and all must question the components of legal rules that potentially undermine our safety and democracy. Moving from a discussion of the duty of deans to the duty of lawyers generally, the article calls on lawyer leaders to address …
Symptom Cluster Profiles Following Traumatic Orthopaedic Injuries, Stephen Thomas Breazeale
Symptom Cluster Profiles Following Traumatic Orthopaedic Injuries, Stephen Thomas Breazeale
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
Traumatic orthopaedic injuries (TOIs), musculoskeletal injuries that result from physical trauma, affect millions of Americans, and cost more than cancer, diabetes, or heart disease annually. Post-injury symptoms of anxiety, depression, pain, sleep disturbance, and stressor-related disorders are common and associated with negative long-term outcomes. Individuals rarely experience a single symptom, but often experience them in clusters of 2 or more co-occurring symptoms. Symptom clusters can be phenotypically characterized by symptom cluster profiles that describe the common ways a group experiences a set of symptoms. Symptom cluster profiles may share biological underpinnings, yet research examining biological underpinnings of symptom cluster profiles …
Development Of A Rating Scale For The Measurement Of Adult Social Skills, Jessica Cuitareo
Development Of A Rating Scale For The Measurement Of Adult Social Skills, Jessica Cuitareo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Social skills are a person’s ability to adapt to the environment appropriately utilizing verbal and nonverbal communication (Matson et al., 2007). In accordance with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – fifth edition (DSM-5), individuals diagnosed with Autism demonstrate social skills deficits (APA, 2013). Such deficits may impact an individual negatively in developing and maintaining relationships, as well as occupational skills. However, assessments for adults are few and far between, as assessment has primarily focused on children. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to create and pilot a measure of adult social skills, with the intention of …

The Impact Of Burnout On Career Commitment Among Physicians, Clergy, And Law Enforcement During The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Quantitative Study, Christopher L. Clem
PhD in Organizational Leadership
The long-term effects of the COVID-19 crisis among helping professionals such as physicians, law enforcement officers, and clergy remain unknown. The strain and enormous stress encountered by these professionals are profound and concerning (Benham et al., 2020; Greene et al., 2020; Stogner et al., 2020). In this study, the researcher explored the effects of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) on career commitment among helping professionals including physicians, law enforcement officers, and clergy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, the findings provided insight on the general causes and effects of burnout including possible solutions to counter its effects. Additionally, the …

A Damaged Reputation: Nuclear Depictions In Entertainment Media, Alexander Cannon
Chemistry & Biochemistry Student Scholarship
This paper, originally written for Dr. Adamus Liotta in an honors chemistry class, explores the possibility of a significant influence over public common sense found in the depictions of entertainment media. Through careful analysis and interpretation of Godzilla, The Simpsons, Fallout, and Call of Duty, this paper finds a synergy throughout this diverse range of audience, medium and historical origin, which culminates in an effect much greater than the sum of its parts. This effect frames nuclear science, of any kind, in a hyperbolically catastrophic and horrific light, reinforcing an excessively cautious, pessimistic public perspective on nuclear technology …

In-Kitchen Aerosol Exposure In Twelve Cities Across The Globe, Ahemd El-Gendy, Prashant Kumar, Sarkawt Hama, Rana Alaa Abbass
Faculty Journal Articles
Poor ventilation and polluting cooking fuels in low-income homes cause high exposure, yet relevant global studies are limited. We assessed exposure to in-kitchen particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) employing similar instrumentation in 60 low-income homes across 12 cities: Dhaka (Bangladesh); Chennai (India); Nanjing (China); Medellín (Colombia); São Paulo (Brazil); Cairo (Egypt); Sulaymaniyah (Iraq); Addis Ababa (Ethiopia); Akure (Nigeria); Blantyre (Malawi); Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania) and Nairobi (Kenya). Exposure profiles of kitchen occupants showed that fuel, kitchen volume, cooking type and ventilation were the most prominent factors affecting in-kitchen exposure. Different cuisines resulted in varying cooking durations and disproportional exposures. Occupants in Dhaka, …

Using Covid Technology To Trace Forced Labor In The Cotton Industry, Jennifer Mikhaylov
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review (CICLR) Blog
China is both the world’s largest producer and importer of cotton. Until 2020, China was also the largest source of garment imports into the United States. Most of China’s cotton is produced in the Xinjiang region of China. However, human rights organizations and officials of the United States have declared that many of the cotton field factories in that region have been using forced labor from Uyghurs imprisoned in the region’s internment camps. On December 23, 2021, President Joe Biden signed into law the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which barred products made from forced labor in China's Xinjiang region …
