Risk, Resilience, And The Essential Experience Of Being Seen: Helping Actors Move From Self-Care To Deep Freedom With The Alexander Technique, Jennifer Schulz
Risk, Resilience, And The Essential Experience Of Being Seen: Helping Actors Move From Self-Care To Deep Freedom With The Alexander Technique, Jennifer Schulz
Theatre Faculty Publications
In actor training, Alexander Technique (AT) encourages release of tension, ease, efficiency of movement, and greater expressivity. It evokes deep transition into character, and helps the actor avoid injury. While AT often transpires in quiet spaces between an AT teacher and student, it can also be utilized as a practical tool by the director in group experiences, both in the classroom and in rehearsals, in order to restore expansiveness and brighten the creative inner life of the actor for the audience. Its principles are flexible and comprehensive, fostering freedom and play. While a certified AT teacher is required for full …

Purpose: Cardiac surgery continues to transform into areas of sub-specialization and expertise to reduce variability and have superior outcomes. We sought to analyze the impact of surgical sub-specialization and use of protocol and clinical pathways on outcomes with MCS at the time of LVAD implantation.
Methods: A single center retrospective analysis of long term durable MCS patients between 2004-2019 was performed. The analysis was conducted comparing management of patients before (Era 1: 2004-2011) vs. after (Era 2: 2012-2019) based on before and after introduction of MCS sub-specialization. Since 2012, multiple initiatives were introduced namely recruitment of specialized MCS/transplant surgeons, multidisciplinary …
Growing Up Healthy: A Study On Young Adults And Their Readiness To Transition To Independent Healthcare, Annabelle Heddell
Growing Up Healthy: A Study On Young Adults And Their Readiness To Transition To Independent Healthcare, Annabelle Heddell
2022 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents
Healthcare is a lifelong journey that involves changes, decision making, and awareness of health needs and concerns. As children grow up and age out of the pediatric system, transitioning occurs. Healthcare transitioning (HCT) is a process that assists individuals with the different stages of their health journey. Transition readiness is derived from the concept of health care transitioning, which is generally defined as “the process of shifting from pediatric to adultfocused care” (Kelemen et al., 2014, p. 1062). A more in-depth definition describes health care transitioning as the “process of purposeful, planned movement of adolescents with chronic medical conditions from …

Don’T Tilt My Crown: The Impact Of Hair Discrimination On Minorities, Constance Young
2022 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents
Hair discrimination is a significant issue that has not been given adequate attention nor the proper application of legislation to combat it across the United States. It is currently disproportionally impacting minorities, especially minority women, as it is not only emotionally and mentally damaging to them, but it can lead to health issues as well. This research will further analyze what causes some states to endorse anti-hair discrimination policies as opposed to others. I believe there are many common factors amongst states that have passed laws related to this issue, and that these factors are main indicators of why other …
War On Drugs Legislation In The 1980s: Failed Policies That Created Racial Injustice, Shane Smith
War On Drugs Legislation In The 1980s: Failed Policies That Created Racial Injustice, Shane Smith
2022 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents
For 40 years now, the War on Drugs has continued to damage millions of African American lives around the United States. As a result of failed drug control policies, not only have prisons become extremely overcrowded, but millions of people are still facing consequences such as massive poverty, broken family dynamics, violence, and tensions with law enforcement in their communities. Although this has become a contemporary issue, it is even more important to understand the origins of how this came to be. Digging to the source of the mess is the first step to understanding how we, as a society, …

Patterns Of Social Competencies In Children With Adhd, Ashtyn Wilhelm
2022 Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creative Activity - Documents
Language acquisition is a complex process, and many factors can influence language development. Pragmatic language, more specifically, can be described as using language to communicate during social interactions. Social skills, social behaviors, and social cognition are often used to describe the use of pragmatic language in context. Many cognitive skills influence pragmatic language development, including attention.
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a commonly diagnosed disorder among school-age children, is characterized by difficulty attending and frequent impulsivity (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA], n.d.-a). The characteristics associated with ADHD can negatively affect the social skills of a person diagnosed with ADHD. Thus, children diagnosed …

Making Forests, Making Communities: An Ethnography Of Reforestation In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Megan Brown
Making Forests, Making Communities: An Ethnography Of Reforestation In Monteverde, Costa Rica, Megan Brown
Anthropology Theses and Dissertations
Reforestation is not just planting trees in the ground. More than net increase in forest cover, reforestation is a complex political endeavor undertaken by both humans and non-humans and a popular climate change mitigation tactic. However, little research has examined the dynamics between selection of specific reforestation strategies, health, and community resilience, particularly with attention to entanglements between the lives of both human and non-human forest dwellers. This ethnographic work, based on six months of in-person fieldwork and six months of digital ethnography, examines reforestation and forest relations in Costa Rica’s Monte Verde zone, a region which experienced widespread deforestation, …

Restory Your Church, Mark Youngman
Restory Your Church, Mark Youngman
Doctor of Ministry
This project provides a framework for churches at a turning point or near closure to “ReStory” and consider legacy options for their future including a restart, repurpose, or reallocation of resources. This is the key insight of this project: Churches that tell their past and present stories are well positioned to stay connected to a future vision that meets the needs of the community through creative and innovative means.
I am a pastor in the Tennessee Western Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church. In this context, I have witnessed the closure of dozens of churches in both urban and …
Implementing An Evidence-Based Fall Prevention Plan To Address Unintentional Hospital Falls On A Medical/Surgical Unit, David Haskell
Implementing An Evidence-Based Fall Prevention Plan To Address Unintentional Hospital Falls On A Medical/Surgical Unit, David Haskell
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Falling in the hospital setting is a leading cause of death and disability for patients. For many health care organizations, patient fall prevention strategies have become a priority focus to improve patient outcomes and associated costs.
Project Design: The project was designed to implement a quality improvement project on an adult medical/surgical unit, providing educational activities to nursing staff, and applying a standardized fall prevention plan of care “toolkit” for fall prevention interventions.
Results: Audits completed on 863 patient admits to a 36-bed Medical/Surgical unit during the three-month timeframe, showed the implementation of the project resulted in the creation …
Monstrous Women In The Monstrous Wonderland: An Exploration Of Abjection And Trauma In The Silent Hill Franchise, Brooklyn Miller
Monstrous Women In The Monstrous Wonderland: An Exploration Of Abjection And Trauma In The Silent Hill Franchise, Brooklyn Miller
Honors 499 Theses and Creative Projects
Literary scholars have recently expanded their focus to include emerging media such as video games as literary texts. In particular, these scholars study how video games create an immersive experience with active agency for players. However, there has been little study of horror video games in this rapidly growing line of inquiry. Accordingly, this paper presents a feminist, trauma-informed reading on the horror video game Silent Hill (1999), with further consideration of the subsequent American film adaptation Silent Hill (2006). This exploration outlines the ways by which trauma organizes an active experience for players. In doing so, this examination applies …

An Examination Of The Antecedents And Outcomes Of Diversity Initiative Fatigue, Kennedy London Hammonds
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of my study is to examine the relationship between attitudes toward Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), cynicism towards organizational change, diversity initiative fatigue, and unit diversity climate. It was hypothesized that negative attitudes toward BIPOC will be associated with cynicism toward organizational change and diversity initiative fatigue will mediate that relationship. It was also hypothesized that unit diversity climate will moderate the relationship between negative attitudes toward BIPOC and diversity initiative fatigue and moderate the relationship between negative attitudes toward BIPOC and cynicism toward organizational change. To examine these relationships, a survey was distributed to WKU …
Fundraising For Idaho Foster Kids, Jodi M. Campbell
Fundraising For Idaho Foster Kids, Jodi M. Campbell
IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects
Idaho has an increasing number of children in the foster care system that are not able to be assigned to homes. The system is struggling for resources to provide basic necessities to these children. During my capstone project I created a fundraising event to raise funds to help support the children in the Treasure Valley. I created an online platform as well as an in person event selling my chocolate covered items from my personal business to raise these funds. My efforts were a success in raising $250 to help give these children some items that they need.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction To Decrease Burnout In Emergency Nurses: A Quality Improvement Project At An Academic Medical Center, Desireé M. Mccue
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction To Decrease Burnout In Emergency Nurses: A Quality Improvement Project At An Academic Medical Center, Desireé M. Mccue
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Nursing burnout, categorized by increased emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DE), or decreased personal achievement (PA), is rising in the United States. Emergency Department (ED) nurses at an academic medical center in the western United States experience burnout related to workplace violence and trauma exposure exacerbated by a global pandemic. Burnout can lead to adverse health impacts for nurses, increased institutional costs, and adverse patient outcomes.
Improving mindfulness or awareness of the present can reduce burnout in ED nurses. A mindfulness pilot project was conducted with staff nurses (n=20) and nurse leaders (n=4) in the ED. Participants attended Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction …
Deploying A Validated Postnatal Depression Screening Tool & Guideline To Improve Evidence Based Screening For Postpartum Depression In Ambulatory Care, Debbie Ketchum
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Problem Description: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health problem that is potentially disabling and can be life-threatening. It is one of the most common diagnoses for maternal morbidity and mortality, affecting one in ten women in the United States. Currently, there is no universal process for the identification of PPD within the ambulatory clinics in this regional health system caring for obstetrical patients. A quality improvement project was developed and implemented with a pilot group in the ambulatory setting.
Rationale: Without a standard process for screening, patients and their newborns may be at increased risk for detrimental consequences …
Considerations For Establishing Silvopastures On Wooded Sites, Brett Chedzoy, Ashley Conway, John Fike, Kate Macfarland
Considerations For Establishing Silvopastures On Wooded Sites, Brett Chedzoy, Ashley Conway, John Fike, Kate Macfarland
Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)
Like other conservation and production practices, silvopasture management is not the right fit for every site or every land manager. High quality woodlands with high native species diversity are generally not a good starting point for silvopasture establishment. However, silvopasture provides an opportunity for active forest management on other sites that have been neglected or poorly managed with undesirable species composition, invasive species concerns, and other challenges. In some situations, silvopasture management can be used to aid in ecosystem restoration or fuels mitigation. The land manager and others in the silvopasture team should consider natural resource issues highlighted in this …
Gender Responsive Reentry: Supporting Mothers And Their Children, Michaela Bruder, Ally Malueg, Neve Patterson, Courtney Schallock
Gender Responsive Reentry: Supporting Mothers And Their Children, Michaela Bruder, Ally Malueg, Neve Patterson, Courtney Schallock
Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
The unique needs and experiences of women with children are not reflected in Minnesota’s state reentry approach or federal reentry approach. The number of women in the correctional system has been steadily rising, which means more women, many of them mothers, are returning to their families and communities without the programming and supports needed to successfully resume their roles as parent and provider. Minnesota must invest in a gender-responsive reentry approach tailored specifically to the needs of women with children.
Intercultural Communication Competence And Empathy Among Physician Assistant Students: The Role Of International Experiences, Rachel Lerch
Intercultural Communication Competence And Empathy Among Physician Assistant Students: The Role Of International Experiences, Rachel Lerch
Honors Projects in Science and Technology
Having cultural competency and empathy towards others has become increasingly important, especially within the medical field. Experiential learning, such as study abroad has been shown to help increase intercultural communication competence (ICC) and empathy amongst students, which is important once those students enter the workforce. It is especially important for health care providers, such as Physician Assistants, to have high levels of ICC and empathy since they are in contact with patients from various cultures and need to have clear and comfortable communication with those patients. The purpose of this study is to confirm the relationship between ICC and empathy …

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, have reached record high rates in the United States. Sexually transmitted infections disproportionately affect reproductive-aged males and females 15–44 years of age, who account for 65% and 42% of the total reported C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae cases, respectively. These infections are the most common treatable sexually transmitted infections in the United States. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to decrease the rates of recurrence of STIs in males and females older than 17 years at a private family practice clinic in Carrollton, Texas, in the Dallas metropolitan …
Silver Alloy-Coated Urinary Catheters: Preventing Urinary Tract Infection, Assumpta I. Iwe
Silver Alloy-Coated Urinary Catheters: Preventing Urinary Tract Infection, Assumpta I. Iwe
Cohort X
Background: A urinary tract infection (UTI) involves any part of the urinary system, including the urethra, ureter, kidney, and bladder. Urinary tract infections are the most common healthcare-associated infection reported to National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). A UTI is also the second most frequent infection in long-term care (LTAC) facilities, making it the most common cause of bacterial infection or sepsis and hospitalization. Patients with urinary catheters are at an increased risk of infection, and standard catheters reduce the body’s natural ability to cleanse the urinary tract of microorganisms. Bacteria can colonize into biofilms that attach themselves to the catheter …
