OBJECTIVE: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is the most common and lethal gastrointestinal disease affecting preterm infants. NEC develops suddenly and is characterized by gut barrier destruction, an inflammatory response, intestinal necrosis and multi-system organ failure. There is currently no method for early NEC detection, and the pathogenesis of NEC remains unclear.
DESIGN: To further understand the molecular mechanisms that support NEC, we used solution phase hybridization and next-generation DNA sequencing of bisulfite converted DNA to perform targeted genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation at high read depth.
RESULTS: We found that ileal samples from surgical NEC infants (n = 5) exist in …

Philosophical Hermeneutics As An Interpretive Framework In The Analysis Of Colin Kaepernick’S Nfl Protest, E. Anthony Muhammad, Cynthia Thomas
Curriculum, Foundations & Reading: Faculty Publications
One of the more polarizing issues that captivated society in recent years was the controversy surrounding National Football League (NFL) athletes kneeling during the playing of the National Anthem. Initiated by NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick as a display of protest against police brutality, kneeling during the anthem sparked a firestorm of controversy and a national debate. In this study the controversy and the two men behind it will be analyzed through the lens of Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics. Specifically, this study will highlight how Colin Kaepernick and Army veteran Nate Boyer experienced a fusion of horizons that produced the kneeling …

Role Of Drosophila In Human Disease Research 2.0, Masamitsu Yamaguchi, Shinya Yamamoto
Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications
The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is a highly tractable animal model to study various human diseases [1]. Many biological pathways are highly conserved between humans and flies, and nearly 85% of human disease-causing genes have homologs in Drosophila. Drosophila has a relatively short life span and produces a large number of progenies, allowing researchers to perform rapid experiments that can easily be reproduced, allowing reliable statistical analyses of biological data. In addition, there are fewer ethical concerns when using Drosophila for biomedical research compared to mammalian models. Importantly, sophisticated genetic experiments can be designed to answer complicated …

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has excellent control rates compared to nonvirally associated OPSCC. Multiple trials are actively testing whether de-escalation of treatment intensity for these patients can maintain oncologic equipoise while reducing treatment-related toxicity. We have developed OP-TIL, a biomarker that characterizes the spatial interplay between tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and surrounding cells in histology images. Herein, we sought to test whether OP-TIL can segregate stage I HPV-associated OPSCC patients into low-risk and high-risk groups and aid in patient selection for de-escalation clinical trials.
METHODS: Association between OP-TIL and patient outcome was explored on whole slide …

Grit Had A Positive Impact On Moderate-To-High Intensity Physical Activity During The Covid-19 Health Crisis, Kyle Pellerin, Thomas Parrillo, Grant Morgan, Joel Martin, Shane V. Caswell, Nelson Cortes, Ali Boolani, Andreas Stamatis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Recently, moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) has attracted additional scientific interest (e.g., ACSM recommendations) not only thanks to a) the physical and psychological benefits that can be experienced by the general population following just a single bout, but also b) since high levels of MVPA seem to mitigate the mortality risk associated with high levels of sedentary behavior, such as sitting. Non-pharmaceutical interventions against the COVID-19 (e.g., stay-at-home orders) have altered people’s lifestyles (e.g., physical activity, sitting time). Grit, a higher-order personality trait based on two lower-order components (i.e., perseverance and consistency), is highly predictive of both success and performance. …

Predicting In-Season Performance From Pre-Season Power And Gait Metrics In Collegiate Basketball: Preliminary Evidence, Jasmine Piper, Bill Siddiq, Hiroki Matsuo, Grant Morgan, Ali Boolani, Andreas Stamatis
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Power training affects gait patterns. Power training also affects basketball performance. The Efficiency index (EFF) is the most used in-season basketball performance metric in the US. Strength and conditioning coaches measure power output via specific jumping tests. Could the pre-season relationship between power and gait provide additional information in foreseeing performance before the basketball season starts? PURPOSE: To a) confirm that pre-season standing broad jump (SBJ) scores correlate with post-season EFF and b) explore if pre-season SBJ scores and pre-season gait metrics (Jumping Point Gap Broad Jump, Stride, and Speed) are correlated. METHODS: Participants (n=17) were recruited from …

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP NENs) are rare cancers consisting of neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) and neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), which have been increasing in incidence in recent years. Few cell lines and pre-clinical models exist for studying GEP NECs and NETs, limiting the ability to discover novel imaging and treatment modalities. To address this gap, we isolated tumor cells from cryopreserved patient GEP NECs and NETs and injected them into the flanks of immunocompromised mice to establish patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models. Two of six mice developed tumors (NEC913 and NEC1452). Over 80% of NEC913 and NEC1452 tumor cells stained positive for Ki67. …

Department of Psychiatry
Background: Suicide is a public health problem that gets little attention in Bangladesh especially in prevention aspects. Recent studies revealed that a significant portion of risk factors is closely related to family events. However, potential prevention strategies considering the family structure and involving family dynamics of Bangladesh have not been discussed.
Objectives: We aim to highlight areas of family vulnerability and resilience when the threat of suicide is present, as well as the potential roles of family in suicide prevention in Bangladesh.
Methods: We conducted a thorough narrative and focused literature search and synthesized evidence based on available articles discussing …

Beyond Profitable Shifts To Green Energies, Towards Energy Sustainability, Farboud Khatami, Erfan Goharian
Faculty Publications
The traditional carbon-based approach towards sustainability has long caused the concepts of green and sustainable energies to be used interchangeably. Recent studies have tried to advance this archaic view by considering more aspects of sustainability. However, almost all major studies have been concerned with only the economic and environmental aspects of electricity generation, whereas the concept of sustainability is beyond these two criteria. In this paper, we seek to provide a methodology for a more comprehensive definition of electricity generation sustainability based on the lessons learned from previous studies and additional metrics suggested by them. The main characteristics of select …

Nicu Nurses’ Varying Levels Of And Experiences With Moral Distress While Caring For Infants With Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Sarah Battaglia
Honors Scholar Theses
Background: Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is both a physical and psychological dependence on opioids. When a woman with OUD becomes pregnant, Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) can occur in her child. NAS occurs when the infant shows manifestations of withdrawal, due to the exposure to opioids in the womb being abruptly discontinued once born. Nurses that care for mothers with OUD and their infants with NAS report varying degrees of moral distress related to preexisting stigmas, a lack of education on the chronic disease of addiction, and the multitude of ethical dilemmas experienced while caring for this vulnerable population of mothers …
