Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
The spread of SARS-COVID 19 infection has resulted in accelerated efforts at the development and dissemination of vaccines throughout the globe. These vaccines have different mechanisms of action and their efficacy and side effects are being monitored. There have been rare reports in the literature of thyroid dysfunction after COVID-19 vaccine administration. Sub-acute thyroiditis is one such complication that can arise as a rare side-effect of vaccination. This has also been reported as a symptom of COVID-19 infection. Clinical features include fever, neck pain, palpitations, and weight loss. We report sub-acute thyroiditis in a 50-year-old male who presented with symptoms …

Background Recent literature shows that reduced staffing over the weekends in hospitals may compromise patient care with acute conditions like acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Objective Our study evaluated differences in the outcomes between patients presenting with non-ST segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) on weekends versus those coming on weekdays. Methods A single-center retrospective study was performed on NSTE-ACS patients. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22 to calculate an independent sample t-test value for significance between the two groups. Results The mean DTB time for patients admitted over the weekend was significantly higher than those admitted over weekdays (p=0.000). …

The Geographical (And Almost) Non-Geographical Advantages On Access To Water Resources, Clemir Abbeg Coproski
The Geographical (And Almost) Non-Geographical Advantages On Access To Water Resources, Clemir Abbeg Coproski
INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference
Although water scarcity doesn’t sound like a 21st century problem, more than 1.2 million people die every year directly related to the lack of access to safe water. Malnutrition, lack of sanitation, and other diseases can bump those numbers even higher. An interesting question that very few might ask is: what are the causes for the lack of access to water? There are several answers to those questions, and some of them are related to geography and some of them are not, or maybe both.

Symposium: Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, & The Constitution: The Precarity Of Justice Kennedy's Queer Canon, Kyle C. Velte
ConLawNOW
This essay gives a brief overview of the legal and normative of impact of Justice Kennedy’s Queer Canon, a series of four LGBTQ cases written by Justice Kennedy over nearly two decades. The pro-LGBTQ outcomes in the Queer Canon cases made Justice Kennedy a hero to many LGBTQ people. It then explores Justice Kennedy’s fifth, and final, LGBTQ opinion, Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. That case, which held that a traditional Christian baker would prevail on his First Amendment Free Exercise challenge to a state public accommodations law, was not the finale hoped for by the LGBTQ …

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolic products of fungi. They are poisonous, carcinogenic, and mutagenic in nature and pose a serious health threat to both humans and animals, causing severe illnesses and even death. Rapid, simple and low-cost methods of detection of mycotoxins are of immense importance and in great demand in the food and beverage industry, as well as in agriculture and environmental monitoring, and, for this purpose, lateral flow immunochromatographic strips (ICSTs) have been widely used in food safety and environmental monitoring. The literature to date describing the development of ICSTs for the detection of different types of mycotoxins using …
I Wish You Were Here: An Autoethnographic Study On A Story Of Grief And The Role Of Psychological Capital, Christina Albright
I Wish You Were Here: An Autoethnographic Study On A Story Of Grief And The Role Of Psychological Capital, Christina Albright
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
We have all experienced grief. The death of a person or pet, the death of a relationship or end of a job, and even disappointments carry with them experiences of grief. Whenever someone or something dies, we try to make meaning of the situation to find some closure and move toward a new normal. Meaning making occurs as we tell our stories, share our experiences, and sort through memories. Qualitative research is much the same. In qualitative research one might hear, see, or experience a story, then sort through the details, looking for ways to explain and bring meaning and …

UNL Student Research Days Posters, Graduate
Interstitial cystitis or bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic and debilitating pain disorder of the bladder and urinary tract with poorly understood etiology. Symptomatic criteria to aid in the diagnosis of IC/BPS includes bladder pain, an increase in urinary urgency or Hunner’s ulcers on the bladder wall.
Our study revealed differences in the profiles of small urinary peptides for IC/BPS patients compared to age-matched controls which is consistent with increased protease activity in IC/BPS. Our study also enabled the direct measurement of APF peptide abundance in IC/BPS and control urine. Our results indicate that the full-length APF peptide was …

The Academic Work-Life Balance Of Entry-Level Athletic Training Students And Its Implications, Grant Pheil
School of Health and Human Performance Theses
Athletic training students (ATS) have been documented to experience stressors and perceive burnout up to this point in their assimilation into the profession. This is understood through recent work-life balance (WLB) and burnout research within the student population, stemming off research recommendations surrounding the professional setting. However, following current educational shifts and worldwide events, prior research is limited surrounding specific graduate level ATS WLB, stressors, coping responses, and comparisons across ATS demographics. The purpose of this study is to identify this balance in graduate level students and highlight stressors or management techniques that will benefit future students pursuing athletic training …

Asymmetric Synthesis Of 𝜸-Borylated Amines Via Rhodium-Catalyzed Hydroboration Of Allylamine Derivatives, Rukshani Wickrama Arachchi, Shekhar Kc, Arun Suneja, James Takacs
UNL Student Research Days Posters, Graduate
The Takacs group has explored different dimensions of Catalytic Asymmetric Hydroboration (CAHB) reaction mainly focusing on variety of amide, oxime ether and phosphonate directing groups. Inspired by the results obtained with BINOL- and TADDOL- derived chiral catalysts along with pinacolborane, we explored the potential of acyclic N-acyl allylamines as substrates for direct-hydroboration to prepare chiral amine derivatives bearing g-boronic ester functionality, yields up to 90% with 98:2 enantioselectivity. The major enantiomer obtained is independent of starting alkene geometry, revealing that rhodium-catalyzed cis/trans-alkene isomerization occurs prior to hydroboration. In this poster, we will discuss the generation of active catalysts …
