Occupational therapists specializing in Lymphedema therapy have the unique training skills and knowledge to address the challenges this population faces, as well as the tools needed to educate patients and their family members on how to manage returning to work, and make any adaptations to their …

Teen Driving And Community Mobility Educational Module For Ot Students, Celeste Johns, Angela Blackwell, Melissa "Missy" Bell Apr 2022

Teen Driving And Community Mobility Educational Module For Ot Students, Celeste Johns, Angela Blackwell, Melissa "Missy" Bell

Spring 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Teens with disabilities require increased support in driving and community mobility (D&CM) due to increased complexity resulting from the combination of typical teen characteristics (physiological changes and developing cognitive skills), and limitations posed by physical, cognitive, or visual impairments (Interactive Autism Network, 2011; Monahan, 2012). Due to lack of training, decreased awareness, low confidence, decreased competence, billing, and productivity concerns OT practice is limited in addressing D&CM (Dickerson et al., 2011). There is a need for more targeted information regarding teen driving and community mobility within OT education to increase competence (knowledge, skills, attitudes), and prepare them to be generalists …

Habituation In Occupational Therapy For People With Alcohol Use Disorder, Sarah Garces, Steven M. Gerardi Apr 2022

Habituation In Occupational Therapy For People With Alcohol Use Disorder, Sarah Garces, Steven M. Gerardi

Spring 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is an ongoing chronic health problem affecting millions of people worldwide. Habituation is a construct used by the occupational therapy (OT) practice model, the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO). Habituation relates to a persons’ roles, habits, and routines, and how these interact to shape occupational participation and performance. Since the habitual use of alcohol is a key component of AUD, an understanding of how habituation is addressed in OT intervention is essential. The OT literature has not been systematically reviewed to determine how habituation is addressed in OT practice in clients with AUD, leaving it difficult …

Mothers Caring For Technology Dependent Neonates, Valerie Boebel Toly, Julia Blanchette, Carol M. Musil, Arwa Al Hamed

Sigma Foundation for Nursing Research Grant Reports

The purpose of this study was to prospectively examine mothers' psychological well-being and needs for information and support as well as their technology-dependent neonates' healthcare utilization (rehospitalization, emergency room visits) during the 3-month transition from the neonatal transitional care unit to home as a basis for designing interventions to address mothers' and their vulnerable infants' specific needs. Studying the transition from hospital to home affords a unique opportunity to examine factors that affect the psychological well-being of these mothers as they take on the caregiving role and to build evidence for interventions to best support these mothers.

Juneau, Alaska’S Successful Response To Covid-19: A Case Study Of Adaptive Leadership In A Complex System, James E. Powell, Robert W. Orttung, Sean Asiqłuq Topkok, Hana Akselrod, Joseph Little, Peggy Wilcox Apr 2022

Juneau, Alaska’S Successful Response To Covid-19: A Case Study Of Adaptive Leadership In A Complex System, James E. Powell, Robert W. Orttung, Sean Asiqłuq Topkok, Hana Akselrod, Joseph Little, Peggy Wilcox

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Juneau, Alaska, kept COVID-19 deaths lower than in other similar jurisdictions. We argue that adaptive leadership—the early decisions and actions of Juneau’s leaders, effective communications, and emergent new collaborative structures—in the context of municipal ownership of key assets enabled Juneau’s success. The result of 61 interviews and follow-up research, this case study contributes a better understanding of which institutional design, communication, and collaborative factors mattered in responding to the pandemic. Adaptive leadership provides a better explanation for Juneau’s success than alternatives that focus on its isolation, home-rule status, and socio-economic structure.

From Metrics To Action: A Framework For Identifying Limiting Factors, Key Causes, And Possible Solutions In Food-Energy-Water Security, Jennifer Schmidt

ISER Articles

Food, energy, and water (FEW) security require adequate quantities and forms of each resource, conditions that are threatened by climate change and other factors. Assessing FEW security is important, and needs to be understood in the context of multiple factors. Existing frameworks make it hard to disentangle the contributors to FEW insecurity and to determine where best to expend efforts on short- and long-term solutions. We identified four consistent components of FEW security (availability, access, preference, quality). This framework provides detailed and nuanced insights into factors that limit or bolster security in each of the three sectors. The integrated framework …

Progressive Lenses And Acute Anisomentropia, Alena Lane Apr 2022

Progressive Lenses And Acute Anisomentropia, Alena Lane

Conference Papers

The aim of the poster is to demonstrate that presbyopic patients with acute anisometropia can continue using progressive lenses. Acute or induced anisometropia occurs when a sudden change in the prescription is introduced. A typical example of this occurs following the cataract operation to one eye. The problem arises when the difference in refractive power of both eyes after the operation is 2.00D and more. The difference in lens power can cause the eyes to see different size images and lead to difficulties in fusing them. Additionally, when an image is viewed off axis through the spectacle lens away from …

Role Of Extracellular Vesicles In Glia-Neuron Intercellular Communication, Shahzad Ahmad, Rohit K Srivastava, Pratibha Singh, Ulhas P. Naik, Amit K Srivastava

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Cross talk between glia and neurons is crucial for a variety of biological functions, ranging from nervous system development, axonal conduction, synaptic transmission, neural circuit maturation, to homeostasis maintenance. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), which were initially described as cellular debris and were devoid of biological function, are now recognized as key components in cell-cell communication and play a critical role in glia-neuron communication. EVs transport the proteins, lipids, and nucleic acid cargo in intercellular communication, which alters target cells structurally and functionally. A better understanding of the roles of EVs in glia-neuron communication, both in physiological and pathological conditions, can aid …

Integrated Nonmarital Property Rights, E. Gary Spitko Apr 2022

Integrated Nonmarital Property Rights, E. Gary Spitko

Faculty Publications

Nonmarital cohabitation has become a mainstream family structure in the United States. Yet, despite the increasing prevalence of nonmarital cohabitants, American family property law generally fails to support nonmarital couples. This inequality under the law disproportionately disadvantages persons of color, those with relatively less education, and couples with relatively fewer economic resources. This Article considers the post-Obergefell need for law reform to better support nonmarital families, examines the principles that should ground nonmarital property rights reform, and proposes a novel approach to nonmarital property rights that integrates the law of dissolution with the law of succession, unifies the law governing …

Simple But Not Easy: An Examination Of The Test-Retest Reliability Of The Perceived Stress Scale (Pss-10) And Exploration Of A Meditation App For Stress Management With High School Students, Eileen Kaskons

Counseling and Psychology Dissertations

Stress can have a negative effect on overall well-being, trigger physical disease, and contribute to mental health disorders. The 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) is frequently used in research. However, there are limited studies on the test-retest reliability of the PSS-10 with adults, and no studies could be identified that tested this issue with adolescents. Meditation apps are often recommended for stress reduction, but they have not been widely studied for use in high school. This study investigated the test-retest reliability of the PSS-10 and examined the feasibility of using a meditation app with high school students. First, a comprehensive …

Naps: A New Approach To Decrease Patient Adverse Outcomes, Ayesha Lakhani Apr 2022

Naps: A New Approach To Decrease Patient Adverse Outcomes, Ayesha Lakhani

MSN Capstone Projects

Hospitals have been short staffed, especially during the pandemic. Due to this many staff members have been overworked causing them to become stressed, exhausted, and not alert which is resulting in adverse patient outcomes (Aiken et al., 2004). One of the solutions suggested so far is nap. Nap is a low-cost solution which can help reduce the adverse outcomes of working and help promote positive patient outcomes. This benchmark study is a guide to institute naps and will provide a detailed step-by-step instruction to anyone to ensure a successful implementation of the project.

Study objective Facemask use is associated with reduced transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Most surveys assessing perceptions and practices of mask use miss the most vulnerable racial, ethnic, and socio-economic populations. These same populations have suffered disproportionate impacts from the pandemic. The purpose of this study was to assess beliefs, access, and practices of mask wearing across 15 urban emergency department (ED) populations. Methods This was a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study of ED patients from December 2020 to March 2021 at 15 geographically diverse, safety net EDs across the US. The primary outcome was frequency of mask use outside the …

Sexual Profiling & Blaqueer Furtivity: Blaqueers On The Run, T. Anansi Wilson Apr 2022

Sexual Profiling & Blaqueer Furtivity: Blaqueers On The Run, T. Anansi Wilson

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

This article has taken some time to recollect. I have been struggling to find the grammar to communicate a phenomenon that is both central to BlaQueer life and beyond BlaQueer living. This difficulty, the silences, the gaps, the nonsensical and agrammatical nature of this phenomena—that of BlaQueer furtivity, the strict scrutiny of Black life and sexual profiling—are central features not only of this project but of the legal, extralegal and social logics and powers that mark, make and remake BlaQueer folks as always, already furtive, subject to strict scrutiny and necessarily sexual profiling. I have been struggling with whether to …

Naltrexone Alters Cardiovascular Function Following Acute Forced Swimming In Mice, Candace R. Longoria, Quadratullah Qadiri, Evan L. Matthews, Sara C. Campbell, John J. Guers

Department of Exercise Science and Physical Education Scholarship and Creative Works

Purpose Naltrexone (NTX) is an opioid antagonist that can reverse the physiological effects of opioid receptors when bound. Opioid receptors have been found to play a role in cardiovascular (CV) function, and thus, binding of NTX may alter CV activity at rest and in response to acute and chronic exercise (EX). We hypothesized that opioid receptor blockade will alter the typical CV responses following acute EX. Methods We assessed the effects of opioid receptor blockade on CV function via echocardiography in mice following an acute bout of forced swimming (FSw), a model of rodent EX. We administered opioid receptor antagonist, …

Wellness Promotion Through Leisure Activity Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Gabriela Morrell-Zucker Apr 2022

Wellness Promotion Through Leisure Activity Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Gabriela Morrell-Zucker

Spring 2022 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

The purpose of this capstone project is to analyze the outcomes of an occupation-based wellness program which aims to address the problem of a lack of wellness promotion programs for community-dwelling older adults. Through structured programming older-adults demonstrated increased participation in leisure activities contributing to positive health and wellness. As the older adult population continues to grow, there is a need to engage community-dwelling older adult populations in wellness promotion through leisure activities. For this purpose, a quantitative approach examines the outcomes of program development from older adults' perspectives through a the CHAMPS Older Adult Physical Activity Questionnaire.
